MAD MAX 4 Could Have Aeon Flux and Charles Bronson?

Not quite sure if this is the “maximum force of the future” the first MAD MAX’s tagline was telling us about, but it sure is an eye-opening.  According to E Online!, George Miller has his gaze on a couple of actors to fill the lead roles in his long-gestating MAD MAX 4.  For the female lead, he’s looking at Charlize Theron.  For the role of “Mad” Max Rockatansky, he’s set his sights on Tom Hardy.

Now, before you start flinging monkey feces at this piece of news, realize first and foremost that this is Miller’s appetite may be making checks that, for all we know, his hide can’t cash.  MAD MAX 4 is a long way off, it has been for many years.  This time next year, with no new news coming our way, we could be hearing about two, new lead role possibilities.  According to the article at E Online, Miller is keeping details about the film under wraps.  One could easily read into that that he doesn’t even have these details stamped down.

Not knowing what the female lead role is, I can’t comment on whether Theron would make a good choice or not.  Hardy, on the other hand, is making a name for himself as a badass all over the festival circuit with BRONSON, and, while I’m sure he would physically be perfect for the part, I’m still not sold on the idea of this movie as a whole anyway.  I was intrigued a year or two ago when it was going to be an animated feature.  That may have sparked some interest, most notably because it could mean Mel Gibson might have been back to voice the role.

At this stage of the game, Miller needs to reassess the notion that Gibson is too old for the part, and, instead of casting younger actors to further the adventures of Mad Max, make Max older and show us that world.  I want to see what an aged Mad Max has to contend with in his day-to-day life.  At this point, if you’re casting anyone other than Gibson in the lead role, you might as well be calling it something completely different.

Renner Could be ‘Max Max 4’

After watching ‘The Hurt Locker’ a second time, it seems star Jeremy Renner is poised for the A-list.  After bumping into him at CineVegas, he certainly has the entourage to prove it.  Well, that move up to super stardom looks to take its next step, as Renner is attempting to fill the role left open by Mel Gibson.

In a recent interview, Renner says he is screen testing and meeting wiht George Miller about starring in ‘Mad Max 4.’  In fact, Renner says he is “fighting” to do the film.  Renner also said this would be next Summer, so ‘Mad Max 4’ might be coming our way sometime in 2011.

The next installment in the ‘Mad Max’ franchise, which, when last we heard, was still titled ‘Mad Max 4: Fury Road,’ has gone through several iterations under director Miller.  Earlier this year, it was announced the film would be done using 3D stereoscopic anime.  No word has come down to the contrary, and what we see when it finally comes out could be a digitized version of Renner.

3D Anime ‘Mad Max’ is Coming

Getting a fourth ‘Mad Max’ film off the ground seems like it’s about as hard as flying the Spruce Goose.   It just doesn’t seem like it’s meant to happen.   Don’t tell director George Miller that, though.   He sat down with MTV this week, and divulged some information about ‘Mad Max 4’ being done as an R-rated stereoscopic anime flick for theatrical release.   Sounds pretty badass.

“I see myself as someone who is very curious about storytelling and all its various media,† Miller said. “I’ve always loved anime, in particular the Japanese sensibility. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.†

The story will lift plot points from the script the director was going to go with when he last tried to get the film made back in 2003.   That project fell off the financial deep end after the Iraq war broke out, thank you, W!

As for Mel Gibson reprising the role, don’t expect him to return.

“We’ll probably go a different route,† Miller told MTV about Gibson potentially voicing the lead role.

As for the animation, Miller, who also directed 2006’s ‘Happy Feet’, says he doesn’t want to mimic the Japanese-style animation but rather to adapt it for Western audiences.   “The anime is an opportunity for me to shift a little bit about what anime is doing because anime is ripe for an adjustment or sea change,† he explained. “It’s coming in games and I believe it’s the same in anime. There’s going to be a hybrid anime where it shifts more towards Western sensibilities. [Japanese filmmaker Akira] Kurosawa was able to bridge that gap between the Japanese sensibilities and the West and make those definitive films.†

Miller also says that a video game tie-in is also in the cards.

What do you think?   Would ‘Mad Max’ have a nice resurrection as an anime feature?   Are you excited that they are doing a fourth ‘Mad Max’ film rather than try to reboot the series?   Who do you think would be a nice fill-in for Gibson’s voice on the project?   Let us know by commenting below!
