John Williams: Maestro Of The Movies At The Hollywood Bowl This Weekend August 22-24

“Look at all of you…it really is magical, isn’t it?” – John Williams

Beginning in 1981, John Williams has become an annual fixture at the Bowl—a nearly unbroken run of summers (sometimes with the LA Phil, sometimes with the Pops) where enormous crowds gather under the stars, in this scenic amphitheater just off the 101 freeway, to listen to his popular themes. Audiences swarm the place to hear Williams conduct his own music, consistently selling out the nearly 18,000-seat venue—even across three nights, “John Williams nights” have become a favorite staple of summertime in Los Angeles, a yearly tradition for local families and out-of-town fans.

https://www.hollywoodbowl.com/events/performances/3645/2025-08-22/maestro-of-the-movies-celebrating-the-music-of-john-williams

In the last fifteen years it has become a ritual for audience members to bring glowing toy lightsabers and wave them in time to selections from Star Wars; last summer Williams got in on the act himself with a “duel” onstage with his co-conductor, LA Phil music director Gustavo Dudamel (a friend and unabashed Williams fanboy).

In the past few years, with the popularity of ComicCon and cosplay, fans have begun showing up in costumes of their favorite characters from the movies that Williams has scored.

The electric energy in every audience – of all ages is the kind of thing one would expect to see at a rock concert. Without fail, year after year, the Bowl fills to capacity with families and individuals who feel a profound emotional connection to the music of this unflashy, aging maestro, and they roar their love for the man and his music.

John Williams, now 93, may or may not have conducted his last concert at the Hollywood Bowl. He may or may not be there this weekend for the 3-night run –  but make no mistake, get the orchestra on stage, with a Williams ICONIC set list, and the fans come in droves. For those lucky enough over the years to have seen Williams himself conducting, it is a magical experience. Even famed director and frequent Williams collaborator and boss, Steven Spielberg has gotten in on the action, one year being on stage at the Bowl to introduce film clips from some of the most famous films the two have done together.

A cherished Bowl tradition, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and conductor David Newman salute one of Hollywood’s living legends with three performances of John Williams: Maestro of the Movies this weekend, August 22-24. Featuring some of the biggest hits and beloved classics of the silver screen, this all-Williams program also includes a spectacular selection of film clips—from Star Wars and Indiana Jones to Superman and Dear Basketball (in its entirety!)—on the Bowl’s big screens. So, fire up your lightsabers… and may the Force be with you!

John Williams: Maestro Of The Movies At THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL

“Look at all of you…it really is magical, isn’t it?” – John Williams

This past weekend, fans were treated to 3 nights of some of the most iconic music in Hollywood movie history, conducted by “the maestro” himself, John Williams. Williams, still going strong at 91, appeared on stage, like a spritely Jedi master…with hundreds of light sabers lighting up the Hollywood Bowl in his honor. We’re guessing this is something he has gotten used to, considering that Saturday night marked an impressive 100th performance at the Bowl for Williams, a run that began in 1977.

The first half of the performance with the LA Philharmonic, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, was a selection of well-known scores curated by John Williams, as pieces that are special to him, including Hooray for Hollywood, The Cowboys, and Vertigo. Dudamel then launched into some memorable pieces composed by Williams such as Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (“Duel of the Fates”), Amistad, and finally the main theme from Superman, that was perfectly accompanied by a video montage of Williams’ career.

The second half of the show was clearly what the crowd was waiting for, and with light sabers in hand, they were ready! Amazingly, but not surprisingly, Williams walks out on stage with little fanfare. No announcement, no introduction (as if one were needed… lol). He simply does what he does, and clearly loves. He walks to the podium, and after a short bow, taps the baton, acknowledges the orchestra, and away we go!

I’m sure, after having composed over 150 movie scores, it’s not easy to pick just a few. And to be fair, outside of Star Wars, Williams tries to not play the same thing time after time when he performs yearly at the Bowl. This year’s lineup included selections from the Indiana Jones franchise, both new (“Helena’s Theme”) and familiar (“Raiders March”). Fan favorite Jurassic Park also made the cut this time, as well as an unbelievable performance of Schindler’s List, by Williams long-time Hollywood bowl Concertmaster and first chair violin virtuoso, Bing Wang. It’s absolutely incredible to see live, if you get the chance.

From there, it was off to a galaxy far, far away, which is clearly what the fans came for – selections from Star Wars, including “Asteroid Field,” “Princess Leia’s Theme,” and “Throne Room and Finale.” It was during this last selection that Williams and Dudamel participated in a hilariously epic light saber battle. And the crowd ate it up, cheering and begging for more.

During the encore, Williams delivered an emotional finale, with E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Empire Strikes Back (“Yoda’s Theme) and “The Imperial March” aka, Darth Vader’s Theme. All this, and it took THREE curtain calls by Williams to get the crowd out of there. The “Maestro” indeed.

Originally released to supplement and not compete with the 2-LP Motion Picture Soundtrack, this 1-LP release skillfully combines a “Symphonic Suite” that John Williams created for concert performance with new arrangements of other cues from the film score. The Empire Strikes Back has become not only one of Williams’ most iconic scores, but one of the most iconic film scores of all time. The LP comes in a gatefold jacket with the original iconic Star Wars paintings by William Stout, images of John Williams, and notes from author Ray Bradbury, composer and critic Christopher Palmer, and from the maestro himself.

“The Suite, which I had specially written and adapted for concert performance […] had been skillfully augmented with other music from the film to form a unified whole. A great orchestra and Gerhardt’s opulent sound and dramatic phrasing combine to make a fine addition to a rapidly growing list of great recordings of film music.” – John Williams

If adventure has a name…it must be Indiana Jones! Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Solo: A Star Wars Story) will star alongside Harrison Ford, who is returning to the role of the legendary hero archaeologist, for the fifth installment of the iconic franchise.

In addition, the inimitable John Williams will return to score the film, continuing a musical journey which began 40 years ago with Raiders of the Lost Ark. Williams’ unforgettable Indy soundtracks, packed with all the epic thrills, suspense, romance and excitement that fans have come to expect from an Indiana Jones movie, have become as beloved and familiar as the adventurer-hero’s signature hat and whip.

“I’m thrilled to be starting a new adventure, collaborating with a dream team of all-time great filmmakers,” said the film’s director James Mangold (Cop Land, Girl, Interrupted, Walk the Line, The Wolverine and Logan). “Steven, Harrison, Kathy, Frank, and John are all artistic heroes of mine. When you add Phoebe, a dazzling actor, brilliant creative voice and the chemistry she will undoubtedly bring to our set, I can’t help but feel as lucky as Indiana Jones himself.”

Kathleen Kennedy, Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel will serve as producers. Indy swings into theaters July 29, 2022.
