TOP GUN: MAVERICK – Review

This holiday weekend’s big (and I mean big) release could set some records at the box office, while already setting one big milestone. It’s a sequel (not a reboot as many websites say) that has had the longest “gestating” time between its original flick. While most “franchise tentpoles” have usually two or three years between entries, here we have a whopping 36 years since the same actor, playing the same character, took to the skies. I’d venture to say that most of this weekend’s audiences weren’t alive when the first one was blasting through the multiplexes (often in malls back in the day). Oh, and that’s not counting its many pandemic delays and rescheduled openings in the last two years. Yes, 80s film fans have had a long wait to return to the “danger zone” in TOP GUN: MAVERICK. So buckle in…

Oh, this flick does begin with that familiar pop tune as the paramount mountain (and a military prologue “card”) fades away to reveal…Navy flier Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) enjoying some breakfast in an airplane hangar (I’m guessing this is his home). Soon he’s on the road to a nearby testing station. But there’s a “hitch” in his plans. His old pal “Hondo” (Bashir Salahuddin) tells him that one of the Navy “bigwigs” is on his way to shut down the tests on the new fighter jet. Well, he can’t ground him if he’s up in the clouds, so Maverick hurriedly prepares for the big test flight. And that “big gun”, Radm Cain (Ed Harris) arrives at the gate just as the jet leaves the runway. Of course, Pete pushes the craft too hard and is brought into Cain’s office, for at least a dressing down or perhaps he’ll get “the boot”. But to nearly everyone’s surprise, Cain informs Pete that an old friend “in high places” has ordered that he return to his old San Diego training center to instruct a group of new fighters prepping for a dangerous mission. When Pete arrives he is greeted by his hard-nosed superior Adm ‘Cyclone’ Simpson (Jon Hamm) who outlines the big mission (destroying the new Uranium processing plant of a “rogue nation”) and pretty much rattles off the “riot act”. Later Pete heads off to a familiar nearby “watering hole” and is surprised to see that it’s now run by an old “flame”, Penny (Jennifer Connelly). He also observes the fliers he will train including one that he’s got a big connection with, Lt. “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller) whose father Goose was Pete’s best pal prior to his death in a mission together. Can the two put their past aside in order to complete “the job” as the deadline rapidly approaches? And can Pete pass along his skills to insure their safe return?

Cruise slips back into the role that catapulted him into big screen superstardom as though he’s slipping on a (slightly worn) bomber jacket (and a pair of sharp Aviators). Though he’s been defying gravity (and time) for the last couple of decades in the MI series, he hasn’t really connected in most other efforts, leaving his fans to dream of him soaring into the stratosphere once more. Well, wishes are now granted as he brings the same stern intensity paired with an affable charm, but now with a touch of patriarchal pride as he takes these jet-crazy kids under his still-muscular wings. But we see the regret etched into his face, as this ‘ace’ ponders the “flight path not taken”. Connelly’s Penny is part of that, as she fights that ole’ attraction while trying to assert her independence, even while hiding the rekindled “flame” from her wise-beyond-her-years teen daughter. What a pleasure to see Connelly’s intelligence, and dazzling smile almost as bright as Tom’s) back on the big screen. The other part of Pete’s not-so-golden past is represented by Teller as Rooster, who struggles to put aside his anger with Maverick while striving to be his own man and fly out of his pop’s long impressive shadow. Teller conveys Rooster’s sadness and his furious anger over Pete’s attempt to “protect him”. Hamm is a terrific sparring partner for Cruise as the CO that will try and tame “the Maverick” ( and we suspect how that’ll go). The splaying the young pilots are quite endearing especially Monica Barbaro as the main female flyer, the “Phoenix”, her skilled by somewhat “dweeby” partner “Bob” (“Just Bob”) played by Lewis Pullman (Bill’s son) and the charming bad boy “Hangman” given a rascally smirk by Glen Powell (and full of surprises). Speaking of, the most pleasant one (and I’m not spoiling things) is the return of Val Kilmer as ‘Iceman’, Pete’s rival from the first flick, who’s now a retired admiral. The brief reunion of the two is the real heart of this story (which may inspire an allergy outbreak of sniffles through the theatre).

Taking over the directing reigns from the late Tony Scott is Joseph Kosinski (TRON: LEGACY), who finds the perfect balance between character interactions and edge-of-your-seat action sequences. It’s been reported that all the actors actually went up in the jets, with several actually working the controls, making for some breathtaking backdrops (no “green screen” or CGI, apart from some missiles), and letting us experience the grueling “G-force’ effects on the cast’s faces (we can really see them start to blackout). So, if you get the chance to watch this in Imax, well, go for it! And the story benefits from the sweet, yet mature courtship of Penny and Pete (there’s a hint of a spark between Phoenix and Rooster, too). And there’s a bit of “fan service” as one scene echoes the big “beefcake” beach sports from the original. Now some of it is more than a bit far-fetched as the big “mission” almost plays like a rehash of the “Death Star” trench run in another big movie series. Credulity is pushed further to the edge when the “dogfights” are grounded in the big climax. Plus the producers go out of their way to never identify the enemy as the pilots from the “rogue nation” are completely covered in black (naturally) when seen in their respective cockpits (which happen to have English labels). Oh, but why nitpick. This is that very rare sequel that easily surpassed the original (I barely made it through in one viewing in 86′), earning its advance “rep’ as a popcorn-fueled entertainment machine. As the song from the first flick crooned (wished they had a spot for it this time), TOP GUN: MAVERICK will “Take Your Breath Away”. Multiplex-mission accomplished!

David Bowie in LABYRINTH Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

“I wish the goblins would come and take you away! Right now! “

labyrinth

LABYRINTH screens midnights this weekend (August 30th and 31st) at The Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ Midnight Series. Nothing like a crummy day of babysitting your little brother to make you wish him away to the Goblin King! What’s that, you didn’t mean to? Well…time is of the essence…you have 13 hours in which to solve the labyrinth, before your baby brother becomes a goblin!

labyrinth-3

LABYRINTH, the charming 1986 fantasy helmed by the late Jim Henson is lovely to see and a joy to experience. Taking its visual cues from Henson’s THE DARK CRYSTAL and its story from a mix of Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz, this is a classic story about growing up without relinquishing your childlike wonder. Jennifer Connolly leads a cast of 5 humans, 1 Dog and more puppets than you can shake a stick at. In the role of Sarah Connolly does a splendid performance of an introverted yet willful teenager put through the challenge of surviving her own imagination. But what everyone remembers about LABYRINTH is the Goblin King himself, played by David Bowie, probably one of the few people on the planet who could pull off ’80s hairstyles.

labyrinth-1-e1399700244727

If you’re a Bowie fan and have not seen this movie, what on earth are you waiting for!?

Like THE DARK CRYSTAL, the visual design for this film was handled by illustrator Brian Froud, and like that film does a wonderful job of creating a strange, eerie, and beautiful fantasy world. Sarah’s principal companions–a cowardly dwarf, a gentle Bigfoot-like creature and a quixotic canine—are most appealing. Bowie turns in the best performance of the humans, creating an antagonist who is less of a classic villain and more of a trickster, both charming and unsettling.

Light and sweet, LABYRINTH will not be for every taste, but for those whose appetites run to fantasy it’s worth seeing again. And what better way to watch LABYRINTH than on the big screen at The Tivoli Theater (6350 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63130) at midnight!?!

ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL – Review

Although there are some fun sequences and genuine wonder to behold, director Robert Rodriguez‘ ALITA BATTLE ANGEL is mostly familiar, noisy, visual mayhem with a thin plot and even thinner characters.

ALITA BATTLE ANGEL takes place in 2563, 300 years after The Fall, a future where society is split into two halves: those who enjoy the sweet life of Zalem, a bountiful floating city in the sky, and the street-dwellers below in Iron City, who exist suspiciously like those in the world of last year’s READY PLAYER ONE, scraping and hustling to make ends meet. Christoph Waltz stars as Dr. Dyson Ido, a scientist who repairs cybernetic human appendages, which appear to be in big demand in the future. He’s introduced scavenging a junkyard for parts, where he digs up the head and torso of a young cyborg girl who, while badly damaged, is still alive. After Ido repairs her, she has no memory of who she is or where she came from. He names her after his late daughter Alita, and it’s soon clear she was once some sort of accomplished cyber-warrior. Everyone desires to reside in Zalem, but unless you’re well-connected, the only way to get there is by becoming champion at the popular roller-derby-esque sport known as Motorball, which is a lot like Rollerball if James Caan’s head had been grafted onto Optimus Prime. Alita soon begins exploring the world, gets a hunky boyfriend (Keean Johnson), and falls into the clutches of Dr. Ido’s ex-wife Chiren (Jennifer Connelly) and Vector (Mahershala Ali), the leaders of Iron City, who want to use her latent skills for their own nefarious purposes.

Perhaps the genesis story for ALITA BATTLE ANGEL was fresh and groundbreaking when it first appeared in Yukito Kishiro’s graphic novel back in 1990. In the decades since, filmmakers have presented similar themes, concepts and imagery, a lot of which are now so commonplace in these big-budget, CGI-focused extravaganzas that there’s not much new here that separates this film from the dystopian sci-fi crowd. The many CGI robot battles are clearly the focus of ALITA BATTLE ANGEL, and while they’re technically impressive (especially in eye-popping IMAX and 3D), visual snazziness alone isn’t enough to carry the film. The constant use of androids in back alleys striking battle poses grows quickly tiresome. Rodriguez has always been ambitious with his visuals, working wonders with medium-size budgets, yet while ALITA BATTLE ANGEL purportedly cost close to $200 million, the director’s style seems less inventive here than with his cheaper films.

A motion-captured Rosa Salazar as Alita is outstanding, delivering just enough charm and humanity to make Alita a fully-realized CGI character. Veteran actor Christoph Waltz has fun with his role as the caring scientist/creator, though he seems to be retreading previous performances. While I did enjoy Jeff Fahey in a small role as a cyberdog-loving cowboy bounty hunter, the villains, especially a sneering Ed Skrein as head creep Zapan, are mundane, with little dimension or character arc. This is especially problematic since the film is a heroine’s journey and we truly want to see her vanquish more worthy adversaries. Jackie Earle Haley and Jai Courtney (or their heads at least) are underused as robot noggins. There’s a lot to look at in ALITA BATTLE ANGEL, and its young target audience may be entertained, but it’s just not a fresh enough film to sway anyone who has grown tired of this genre.

First Look: James Cameron’s And Robert Rodriguez’s ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL

Visionary filmmakers James Cameron (AVATAR) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY) create a groundbreaking new heroine in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, an action-packed story of hope, love and empowerment.

20th Century Fox has debuted an amazing first trailer for ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL starring Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson.

An ambitious film from the studio, ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL will be in theaters everywhere on July 20, 2018 in 3D & IMAX.

In May 2006, Variety reported that Cameron had spent the past ten months developing technology to produce the film and it looks like he suceeded with the melding of live action and a CGI rendered character. From this first look, the main character in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL is reminiscent of 2001’s FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN.

Set several centuries in the future, the abandoned Alita (Rosa Salazar) is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic. When Alita awakens she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of the world she finds herself in. Everything is new to Alita, every experience a first. As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield Alita from her mysterious past while her street-smart new friend, Hugo (Keean Johnson), offers instead to help trigger her memories.

A growing affection develops between the two until deadly forces come after Alita and threaten her newfound relationships. It is then that Alita discovers she has extraordinary fighting abilities that could be used to save the friends and family she’s grown to love. Determined to uncover the truth behind her origin, Alita sets out on a journey that will lead her to take on the injustices of this dark, corrupt world, and discover that one young woman can change the world in which she lives.

Directed by Robert Rodriguez, with a screenplay by James Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis and Robert Rodriguez and based on the Graphic Novel (“Manga”) Series: “Gunnm” By Yukito Kishiro, the film produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, who’ve worked previously together on TITANIC and AVATAR. They are producing the upcoming 2020 American epic science fiction film AVATAR 2.
