SYNOPSIS

For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base. For reasons unknown, the space-traveling smartass decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town—a rented RV containing Earthlings Graeme Willy (Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Frost). Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mother ship. As two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes.

There’s only one problem: even the best laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them.

THE CHANGE-UP Red Band Trailer

In this new red-band trailer, Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman star in THE CHANGE-UP, from director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers), writers Jon Lucas & Scott Moore (The Hangover) and producer Neal Moritz (Fast & Furious, Click).Time to send the kids out of the room, because this trailer for the R-rated comedy takes the traditional body-switching movie, ties it up tightly and throws it off a cliff.

Synopsis:

Growing up together, Mitch (Reynolds) and Dave (Bateman) were inseparable best friends, but as the years have passed they’ve slowly drifted apart. While Dave is an overworked lawyer, husband and father of three, Mitch has remained a single, quasi-employed man-child who has never met a responsibility he liked. To Mitch, Dave has it all: beautiful wife Jamie (Leslie Mann), kids who adore him and a high-paying job at a prestigious law firm. To Dave, living Mitch’s stress free life without obligation or consequence would be a dream come true.

Following a drunken night out together, Mitch and Dave’s worlds are turned upside down when they wake up in each other’s bodies and proceed to freak the &*#@ out.

Despite the freedom from their normal routines and habits, the guys soon discover that each other’s lives are nowhere near as rosy as they once seemed. Further complicating matters are Dave’s sexy legal associate, Sabrina (Olivia Wilde), and Mitch’s estranged father (Alan Arkin). With time not on their side, Mitch and Dave comically struggle to avoid completely destroying each other’s lives before they can find away to get their old ones back.

From Universal Pictures, THE CHANGE-UP will be in theaters on August 11, 2011.

Your Weekly Source for the Newest Releases to Blu-Ray

What could be better than a young Nicole Kidman in classics 80’s era flickdom? Well, lots… but, we’re talking apples and oranges here. BMX BANDITS is only one of the schlocky titles to go Blu this week, the other is Roger Corman’s SHARKTOPUS, a modern schlockterpiece that was spawned from the recent giant mutant killer animal revival on DVD and the SyFy Channel. If you sit on the serious/schlock fence, perhaps you’ll appreciate the emergence of the HARRY POTTER franchise finally conjuring itself onto Blu. If your tastes are a bit more refined, I would suggest one of Criterion’s new Blu titles: Louis Malle’s AU REVOIR LES ENFANTS — set during WWII, about a French boarding school run by priests and a friendship that could risk the entire school’s safety; or, Edward Yang’s YI YI — a story about a family and their efforts to understand the meaning of life. Finally, I highly recomend the recently released 2010 Academy Award-winning THE FIGHTER starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg as the real-life boxing brothers Dickey and Micky Ward.

Review: THE SWITCH

It’s your typical story. Boy meets girl, boy doesn’t make a move on girl, boy hijacks girls pregnancy…

Wally (Jason Bateman) and Kassie (Jennifer Aniston) are best friends. It’s clear that Wally has feelings for Kassie, but he keeps it quiet for fear of losing her. He even keeps quiet when she decides to have a baby using a sperm donor and then moves out of his life. But not before messing with her pregnancy. See, alcohol + suppressed feelings = Wally switching Kassie’s donor sperm with his at the “baby making” party. (Please tell me there are not REALLY parties for artificial insemination!)

Seven years after becoming pregnant  Kassie and her son Sebastian (Thomas Robinson) move back to New York, and back into the lives of Wally. Despite the obvious similarities between Wally and Sebastian, Kassie has never questioned the paternity of Sebastian. Did I mention that Sebastian is a hypochondriac who loves WebMD, shelter animals, and collecting picture frames? It gets really messy when Kassie meets up with who she thinks is the donor, Roland (Patrick Wilson), and they form a relationship. Now, Wally must chose between staying quiet or confessing everything to Kassie and Sebastian.

The story itself in THE SWITCH is relatively original. I kind of got the impression that it is an adults version of JUNO. It’s not very probable for these circumstances to happen, unless you have a fertility/baby making party where you are going to be inseminated with fresh “seed”. That is one of the weirdest parties that I have ever seen. The thing that makes the most sense about the party is that Juliette Lewis’s character Debbie hosts it. The film was very funny, but was weighed down occasionally by unnecessary parts that seemed to drag on. There were a couple of times that I got bored. Still, the funny parts balanced it out a bit.

Jason Bateman was superb as Wally. His sense of humor and delivery fell right in line with his character. He did a great job of portraying his character as likeable, rather than creepy. I mean, he switched sperm… that is pretty darn creepy. Still, the best part of the film for me was Thomas Robinson. He was so adorable and funny! I love weird, smart little kids. They are way more interesting to watch in movies than the pretty, popular little girl that wants to be a cheerleader. Heck, even in real life I encourage children to be smart and strange! Go nuts kids!

Jennifer Aniston was ok as Kassie. I like her as an actor, but I just see her playing “Rachel” in every role. It’s not that I can’t get over her FRIENDS role, I just wish she would show us a different character every now and again.

This movie is funny and smart… but I think they could have picked up the pace in parts.

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Win Passes to See THE SWITCH

Ok, WAMG-ers,  (pronounced WHAM-GEE-ers. I think it’s Icelandic.)…

How would you like to switch your baby… I mean, how would you like the the chance to win passes to an advance screening of Miramax Films THE SWITCH starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman? The screening is scheduled for next Tuesday, August 17th, 7pm at the Great Escape Gravois Bluffs.

Official Rules:

1. You must be in the St. Louis Area on the day of the screening.

2. Because this movie has to do with a baby… tell us the funniest name for a baby that you can think of.

3. You will then be chosen at random (through our grueling sorting process… Trust me, you don’t want to know!) to win passes. HOORAY!

Synopsis:

From directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck, THE SWITCH stars Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman in an offbeat comedy about Kassie, a smart, fun-loving single woman who, despite her slightly neurotic best friend Wallys’ objections, decides its time to have a baby even if it means doing it by herself with a little help from a charming sperm donor (Patrick Wilson). But, unbeknownst to her, Kassies’ plans go awry because of a last-minute switch that isn’t discovered until seven years later when Wally finally gets acquainted with Kassies’ precocious though slightly neurotic son. THE SWITCH is based on the short story Baster by Jeffrey Eugenides

Rated PG-13 for mature thematic content, sexual material including dialogue, some nudity, drug use and language, THE SWITCH will be in theaters on August 20, 2010. Become a fan on Facebook and follow it on Twitter.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Movie Moving Forward

In news that is sure to excite more than a few friends of mine, actor Will Arnett confirmed to Coming Soon.net that a movie based on the short-lived series ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT would be going in front of cameras before the end of the year.

That’s the plan.  Once Jason Bateman gets out of rehab.  I think that we’re going to start shooting. Oh, was I not supposed to…? Please don’t air that.

Arnett was out promoting his upcoming film WHEN IN ROME when the subject of a film following the continuing adventures of the dysfunctional Bluth family came up.  He did say that a script from show creator Michael Hurwitz had not been complete.  Development on the project has been a stop-and-start affair for quite some time with 100% of the cast never fully committing.  It looks like that time is over, and we will be getting our ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT movie in theaters before long.
