ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Movie Moving Forward

In news that is sure to excite more than a few friends of mine, actor Will Arnett confirmed to Coming Soon.net that a movie based on the short-lived series ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT would be going in front of cameras before the end of the year.

That’s the plan.  Once Jason Bateman gets out of rehab.  I think that we’re going to start shooting. Oh, was I not supposed to…? Please don’t air that.

Arnett was out promoting his upcoming film WHEN IN ROME when the subject of a film following the continuing adventures of the dysfunctional Bluth family came up.  He did say that a script from show creator Michael Hurwitz had not been complete.  Development on the project has been a stop-and-start affair for quite some time with 100% of the cast never fully committing.  It looks like that time is over, and we will be getting our ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT movie in theaters before long.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Script Being Written

An ‘Arrested Development’ feature film adaptation has been in development for so long, it’s become newsworthy when any indication of progression on the project comes out.   Oh, look!   Mitchell Hurwitz typed up a scene!   OMG, James Vallely added a comma!

So, excuse any lack of enthusiasm that comes out when I read The Hollywood Reporter saying Hurwitz and Vallely, the creator and co-executive producer, respectively, have begun work on the screenplay.   While production is likely to begin in the Spring, don’t hold your breath, as most of the show’s main cast (ie Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Will Arnett, etc.) have seen their stock grow since the show’s debut in 2003.   Nonetheless, the two are working on the screenplay, and Ron Howard’s Imagine Pictures is set to produce alongside Fox Searchlight.

Hurwitz and Vallely have stated time and again that a feature film adaptation of the show would not happen unless all, main cast members were on board.   A few have held out for awhile, but it looks like everyone is back on board the film that will show the continuing adventures of the Bluth clan.

Hurwitz is set to direct the film.

Jason Bateman Talks ‘Hancock 2’ and ‘Arrested Development’

He says one is happening, and regarding the other, he’s shocked to even hear reports about it.  Heather over at Coming Soon had an opportunity to sit down with Jason Bateman, and the subjects of two, potential, upcoming films came up, ‘Hancock 2’ and ‘Arrested Development.’

Here is what Bateman had to say about ‘Hancock 2’:

No one has contacted me or anybody that represents me to ask if we were interested. I don’t know anything about it. It’s surprising to me that Variety would write that story because they’re usually pretty well vetted before they report something and that was completely false. I haven’t heard anything about it. The whole thing about me being on board could not be farther from the truth. I would love to be a part of the film, but I haven’t heard anything about it.

In all fairness to Variety and the people behind ‘Hancock 2,’ I don’t remember Bateman’s name getting thrown about at all in context with that film.  That’s not to say that he won’t come on board sometime down the line.  With Peter Berg working on ‘Dune’ and ‘Battleship,’ who knows when work on ‘Hancock 2’ will officially start?

Bateman also talked up the long-awaited ‘Arrested Development’ film:

It’s still being written and my guess is that is will be shot some time next year.  I have a feeling that Mitch [Hurwitz] is halfway done writing it. We’ll probably shoot it middle of next year and then for however long things take to get cut and marketed, so maybe the first part of 2011 I would imagine. That’s just a guess.

Again, I hate to dispute or call into question anything Bateman is talking about, but an ‘Arrested Development’ movie has been “next year” ever since the show went off the air in 2006.  But, while an official announcement may be long away, fans of the show can rest easy knowing that the people behind it are still all about a feature film version if and when that day comes.

Michael Cera Finally Wants to be ‘Arrested’

A big screen version of ‘Arrested Development’ has been talked about ever since the TV series was cancelled in 2006.   Everyone seemed to be on board.   Everyone, that is, except for Michael Cera.   Well, fans of the show can finally rejoice.

Inside sources close to the production say Cera has finally agreed to do the feature film project.

According to insiders, the movie may go as early as the end of the year, if they can put it together in time. Michael Hurwitz is writing and directing the script, and Fox Searchlight is the studio.

As far as any other information goes, it seems the producers are keeping tight lips.   Ron Howard spoke with Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet before this past Sunday’s Oscars, when he had this to say about the project:

“It’s looking very much like we’re going to make [the movie], but we’ve now been asked to stop offering any details. It’s cloaked in a little mystery, but it’s looking good.”

‘Arrested Development’ The Movie

Just so you know, Kristin Dos Santos of E! News reports that Mitch Hurwitz and Ron Howard, the creative heads of TV’s Arrested Development are beginning talks to get the big-screen treatment of the show started. Jason Bateman confirms being approached by the show heads to take on the project:

“I can confirm that a round of sniffing has started,” Bateman says. “Any talk is targeting a post-strike situation, of course. I think, as always, that it’s a question of whether the people with the money are willing to give our leader, Mitch Hurwitz, what he deserves for his participation. And I can speak for the cast when I say our fingers are crossed.”

In an XM Radio interview, Arrested Development co-star Jefferey Tambor also mentioned being approached by Ron Howard to take up his role again as patriarch Donald Bluth. So, while Fox may have dropped the ball on one of the best series it’s ever had, at least fans have something to look forward too. Speaking of Fox, here’s some choice words from David Cross on the subject:
