Interview : THE BELKO EXPERIMENT – VR ESCAPE ROOM With David Yarovesky

screenshotfinal1

Have you ever found yourself suddenly enveloped in a nightmare? You must be dreaming, right? Either that, or you’re in an immersive VR escape room, trying to save your own life while a friend fucks with you from the sidelines! That was the fun, panicked predicament I found myself in when I headed to The Microsoft Lounge to play THE BELKO EXPERIMENT – VR ESCAPE ROOM EXPERIENCE created by my talented friend, David Yarovesky.

The game, co-created by Dan Clifton, is an interactive puzzle which puts you in the middle of The Belko Experiment. You have fifteen minutes to solve the clues in order to save your own life. It’s designed for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift headsets through the Steam Platform, so you have a bit of a choice. Did I mention that it is FREE? As someone who has experience with both headsets, I was glad to experience this world with the Vive! Within seconds of putting the headset on, you’re completely unaware of the outside world, leaving you to focus on the game. I will refrain from the majority of details, since I don’t want to spoil things for you. Instead I will tell you a bit about my experience.

_CAM9630

One of the first things I noticed was a familiar voice when I put the headset on. Comedian Steve Agee is your guide throughout the game. The best way to explain this is if Jiminy Cricket and Milton from Office Space had a baby, and that baby was just dropped in the center of BATTLE ROYALE… Yarovesky created a perfect balance of fun and fear that leads players through the game.

Taking all personal feelings out of this, because I am friends with Yarovesky, and quite a few people involved with the film, I found this to be a ton of fun! You are locked in your office, and have fifteen minutes to search for clues in order for you live. As the clock ticks down, the voice of your co-worker (Agee) is reminding you, with growing intensity, that you’re about to die. There are a ton of different places to search, and you can’t be afraid to think outside the box. As I played, I found my anxiety level increasing slightly, while finding joy in every puzzle solved or clue found. The game is designed to keep you moving. I found myself on the floor, running back and forth, opening drawers, moving boxes, and reaching all over the place in search of clues. Who doesn’t love that?

Because I was playing in the Vive, which is extremely clear, and easy to get lost in, there was one little surprise in particular that scared me half to death! I’m the type of person who can walk into a haunted house by myself, but this… nope. I squealed like a little girl. Despite knowing completely that I was in a video game, that it was not real, and in no way could it hurt me, I panicked! Don’t worry, you can watch me freak out over the “surprise” below.

Warning: I SWEAR A LOT!

After playing the game, I sat down with Yarovesky for a little chit-chat. Check that out here:

One of the first things that I noticed, and it’s something that I noticed when I played ‘Lollipop Chainsaw,’ is that it completely changes your experience when you recognize a voice or two, or know people in it. You heard me as I yelled “Steve! Be nice!” How has your experience been working with friends?

YAROVESKY: It’s great! Working with James [Gunn] is always great. I think James and I like to work together. Working with Steve [Agee] is great. He’s a close friend of mine. It’s nice to have that shorthand, and comfort where you can go “Yo, that wasn’t right. Do it again.” You just know each other so well, so it’s more like hanging out, and it’s less intense. There’s so much in this industry that’s intense and tough, and you have to think hard to navigate choppy waters. When you work with your friends, it’s simple.

I’ve seen a lot of your projects… from music videos, to even writing and directing THE HIVE. We’ve played VR games a million times, but we’ve never actually talked about you going in and creating a game or world. How do you even start something like this?

YAROVESKY : Sure! It’s funny how it happened. Let me break it down…

Break it down for me…

YAROVESKY: I’ll break it down for you, ok? Everyone out there is looking for directors to shoot 360, and you know that I’m a big advocate of VR. I love VR. A lot of these companies don’t understand VR, and all they know is that they want to do “whatever that is.” The simplest way in is 360 video. The problem with that is that 360 is not the future of VR. It’s just not. It’s not interactive enough. So, every time I meet with these companies I tell them “I’m not interested in shooting a 360 video, but I would love to make a game that is fully interactive… a room scale experience that is designed and created by me, that I can kind of control.” I don’t need to go into all of the specifics the ideas, but I wanted to make something totally immersive, and totally interactive. Meeting after meeting, they would go “No thanks. We’re just going to make a 360 video.’ and that’s fine. That’s what they want to do, but Blumhouse Tilt was awesome enough to hear my pitch, and kind of forced me to put my money where my mouth was! I had pitched it a lot, but I hadn’t really ever made a game before, ever. I partnered with Paper Crane Games, I partnered with Top Right Corner, and a ton of people who worked on the film in terms of sound and music… and we cranked out this really cool, unique experience.

This is, with the exception of the surprise because you’re an asshole [laughs]… intense. It’s crazy how much pressure you feel as the clock ticks down, yet Steve adds humor to the game. How did you find the balance between pressure and fun?

YAROVESKY: I think that was just in-game balancing and tweaking. I think that you approach it like a director, in that same way where you look at how much audio people can take, and balance it. How much abuse people can take before they just shut down… I warn people that it’s a fifteen minute panic attack, and when they get in there, they don’t believe me. Then, in the last three minutes they are soaked in sweat and they are freaking out. It’s so funny to see how people completely buckle under the pressure of that ticking clock… to see people stop thinking at all, and start doing things that are completely nonsensical.

If you had to enter THE BELKO EXPERIMENT with all of or friends involved in the film… throw James [Gunn] in there, and Greg [McLean] in there too…

YAROVESKY: Oh, I’d kill them first!

… who would survive, and who wouldn’t?

YAROVESKY: Me. I’d survive. First of all, I’d kill James.

Just like Mafia [the party game]…

YAROVESKY: People listen to James. He’s got a voice that people follow. He’s that alpha dog in the room, so you’ve gotta kill him immediately. You’ve gotta kill Greg…

We should just throw [Michael] Rosenbaum in too.

YAROVESKY: Rosenbaum’s gotta go. Those are all the people who you have to kill first. Anyone who is loud, that can command a group of people… I would kill them first.

What about [Michael] Rooker?

YAROVESKY: Rooker, I would recruit on my side. I’d slash his throat last…

Wouldn’t you be afraid that he’d turn on you first? Let’s face it, he can be unpredictable? [laughs]

YAROVESKY: Rooker’s the real threat! I’d be the most scared of Rooker. [Stephen] Blackehart’s threatening… I don’t know. I’m enjoying this fantasy. I’d like to think that… do I have to keep people? [laughs]

You have to keep one or two people?

YAROVESKY: I’d definitely keep James…

You said you would kill him first!

YAROVESKY: Well, if I got to keep someone. I’d just keep James. James and I, we could run it.

James Gunn And Michael Rooker Talk THE BELKO EXPERIMENT: First Mind-Boggling Trailer Debuts

1212121

Last night, We Are Movie Geeks attended the Belko Industries Holiday Party and it did not disappoint! The event was held to unveil the new red-band trailer for THE BELKO EXPERIMENT, the upcoming “kill-or-be-killed” dark comedy/thriller from writer/producer James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy).

Directed by Greg McLean (creator of the Wolf Creek franchise), THE BELKO EXPERIMENT is a terrifying, provocative and at times hilarious thrill-ride that literally provokes the question; what does it take to survive at work?

In attendance were Gunn, director McLean (via FaceTime), executive producer Peter Safran, cast members Tony Goldwyn (via taped video intro), John C. McGinley, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Adria Arjona, James Earl, David Del Rio, Owain Yeoman, David Dastmacian, and Gail Bean.

I had a chat with star Michael Rooker (aka “Yondu” from Guardians of the Galaxy). “Jimmy (Gunn) always calls me when he needs an a-hole…but in this film, maintenance workers Bud (Rooker) and Lonny (David Dastmalchian) have a very sweet relationship, trying to keep each other safe.”

As seen in the trailer, office workers at an American company in Bogota, Colombia are physically and psychologically threatened by an ominous voice over a loud speaker, telling them they must kill one another or risk being killed themselves (this same voice impressively came on last night as the lights abruptly went out and the trailer was shown on a big screen to the enthusiastic crowd in attendance).

Said Rooker, “I read the script and was just blown away at how good it was.” The film shot on location in Bogota for 6 weeks, with Rooker there for 2 weeks shooting his scenes. “It’s a wild place, and we had a great time filming.”

And when I got a moment to talk to writer Gunn, he was happy that I had the chance to see the film and was very interested in what we thought, saying “I am also a movie geek!” and is a regular reader of our site.

BELKO 363A9562.cr2

I’m really rooting for the success of this film because it really is a brilliant thriller. At the screening I attended, almost a year ago, my back never touched the back of the seat, as I was on the edge of a full blown anxiety attack throughout most of the movie!

THE BELKO EXPERIMENT opens in theaters March 17, 2017.

WOLF CREEK 2 – The Review

WolfCreek2_Phillipe Klaus as Rutger and Shannon Ashlyn as Katarina_hitch hiking

I feel its time to update the standard rules for what not to do in a horror film. Along with not going into the dark basement to check out the mysterious sound and not having per-marital teenage sex in a tent or cabin, we should now officially add not to hitchhike whilst secluded in a remote, unfamiliar land. Going all the way back to THE HITCHER (1986) and overseas to HOSTEL (2005), the ground work has been set for Mick Taylor to put the proverbial nail in the coffin of making this officially a new rule.

We first met good ol’ Mick Taylor, played by John Jarratt, back in 2005 with WOLF CREEK, a film that introduced audiences to an altogether new kind of serial killer. Allegedly inspired by true events — therefore making the film all that much more terrifying — WOLF CREEK unleashed one of the most refreshingly entertaining horror movie villains in years. Devilishly cunning and sadistic, yet playful and humorous, Mick Taylor is a slasher that brings some of what made Freddy Krueger a household name to a monster based in reality.

In true horror franchise fashion, WOLF CREEK leaves the audience with an open ending, ambiguously leaving the fate of Mick Taylor uncertain. As should only be expected, WOLF CREEK 2 opens more or less where the previous film left off. For those familiar with the first film, this continuity is upheld by a comment from a police officer insinuating Mick’s truck looks like it was driven off a cliff. If this doesn’t make sense to you, that tells me you need to rush out and rent WOLF CREEK. Honestly, you won’t regret the $3 or $4 investment.

Director and co-writer Greg McLean, also known for killer ‘gator flick ROGUE (2007), knows how to make genre fans happy, bringing back one of the first truly popular horror villains in recent memory since the heyday on the mid-late 80s. McLean’s direction along with Jarratt’s sense of humor and uncanny ability to charm or frighten the audience on the turn of a dime, makes for quite an unnerving ride through the Australian outback. One moment Mick’s friendly and funny, in a backwoods redneck sort of way, and the next thing you know he’s deadly serious, straight-faced and ready to snap. Armed with two trust weapons of choice, a large hunting knife and a scoped hunting rifle, Mick once again sets out for tourist season in the hot, dry Australian desert.

WolfCreek2_John Jarratt as Mick Taylor 10

WOLF CREEK 2, for those who may be concerned, is not the same film rehashed purely for box office profits. No, this second installment does have a decidedly different feel, where its necessary. What remains the same is Mick’s twisted take on being a civilized enforcer of decent human character, and of course his trademark laugh. Once again, you’ll know what I mean the moment you hear that chuckle. For a deviant murderer, Mick is surprisingly patient and courteous, that is until you cross him or offend his sense of civilized behavior. However, one of the things that has changed with WOLF CREEK 2 is Mick’s level of patient and tolerance. Can we really blame him, though? After all that those ungrateful tourists did to him and his property in the first film, how could a man not be a tad short-fused?

With this subtle but apparent shift in Mick’s mood, WOLF CREEK 2 does lose just a touch of the charm we experienced in the first film. As much as we love Mick for who he is, the added bitterness to his character and urgency to his need to fulfill his violent nature does detract a touch from the thrill. Then again, what charm is lost here is made up for by Mick’s increased ingenuity in torturing and terrorizing his victims. Part of Mick’s appeal is that he’s smarter than the average hillbilly persona he conveys, making him all the more dangerous. WOLF CREEK 2 focuses more on the cat and mouse aspect of Mick’s relationship with his victim, the thrill of the chase, so to speak, whereas the first film spent more time introducing us to what makes Mick tick.

WOLF CREEK 2 still maintains that wonderfully demented sense of humor, but draws back on the laughter a bit from the first film. Mick just seems a level or two more serious about his work now, which means bad things for the hitchhiking foreign couple who have the misfortune of meeting Mick. Where so many slasher films focus on body counts and creatively excessive gore — not that there’s anything inherently wrong with that — WOLF CREEK 2 pays more attention to the details, the subtle nuances of deceiving, terrorizing, capturing and torturing one’s victims. Where’s the fun in simply killing your victims the first chance you get?

WOLF CREEK 2 is currently available through Video On Demand and will open in U.S. theaters on May 16th, 2014.

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Stars

Some Notable Names on PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2’s Director’s List

It’s nice to see that Paramount isn’t jacking around with getting the fastest, cheapest, most uninteresting follow-up to PARANORMAL ACTIVITY out there.  Paramount could have given PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 to any number of fresh out of music video/commercial land directors who can make it on the cheap.  Instead, they are going with some notable names with a serious auteur at the top of that list.

According to the LA Times, Paramount has SCARFACE and THE UNTOUCHABLES director Brian De Palma on their list of potential directors.  When you think about it, though, De Palma is a wise choice on so many levels.  While his 2007 REDACTED wasn’t exactly a barn burner when it came to critical or financial success, it definitely proved the director has something to say in that area of film making.  The transition to something like PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 (assuming it follows the same “found footage” style of film making) might not be all that out of left field when looking at De Palma.

Other directors on Paramount’s list are SESSION 9 and THE MACHINIST director Brad Anderson and WOLF CREEK director Greg McLean, both of whom could bring an interesting style to the project.

I like this list of potential directors.  Even if none of them end up directing PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2, it shows Paramount is looking to hand the next installment in what is likely to be an ongoing franchise to someone who won’t just tow the studio line.  They are looking to give it to a director who has a visual style, who has something to say.  The same could not be said for other studios when dealing with other, potential, horror franchises.  Platinum Dunes might want to take a note.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 is set for release on October 22nd.
