CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD – Review

And what’s a wonderful movie vacation spot for this big four-day (yeah, I’m counting Valentine’s) weekend? Well, if you and the little tykes aren’t “heading South” to join that lil’ bear and the Browns in Peru, then you may want to book a return trip to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) at the multiplex. It has been a while, more than six months since that monumental match-up of DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE, which was the only MCU flick of 2024 (we don’t count the Sony Spidey spin-offs). Being a longtime “Marvel buff” (still wear my M.M.M.S. button to the new flicks), folks ask me about my favorite of the “franchises”. Not counting the big “team’ series, the Avengers, I’d say it’s been the exploits of the “star-spangled man with a plan”, and not because he’s my favorite comics hero. The trio of Steve Rogers epics maintains a high level of quality, not missing a step from the first one from director Joe Johnson to the Russo Brothers helming the last two. But now the reigns have been handed over to a new filmmaker and more importantly that shield is now in the gloved hands of a new “sentinnel of liberty” for the fourth installment, CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD.


The story’s prologue takes place only a few months ago, during the last days of the presidential campaign of former General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford). Fast forward to now as new President Ross, who had hunted down “masked vigilantes”, sends one of those “heroes” out to join a Special Forces squad down in Mexico to rescue some hostages held by the terror group the Serpent Society, and retrieve a mysterious cylinder AKA “the package”. And who’s leading the charge but the new Captain America Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) aided by his new Falcon, Air Force ace Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez). The mission is successful although head Serpent Sidewinder (Giancarlo Esposito) escapes without revealing the name of the “buyer” for the “Package’ who had arranged the meet-up spot in a Mexican church. Sam catches up with Joaquin, who sustained some damage from the battle. He may need some more training, so the duo heads to Baltimore to meet up with Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly), a Korean War vet who was wrongly incarcerated and experimented on with a new Super Soldier formula. Sam invites Isaiah to join them in DC for a big international summit held by Ross. But as he begins his speech concerning the harvesting of a lifeless gigantic alien creature in the Indian Ocean, dubbed the Celestial Island Initiative, Isaiah, in a trance-like state, whips out a gun and fires on the Prez as several other agents, also ‘zoned-out”, blast away. After a brief chase the now lucid Isaiah has no recollection of his attack. Is he one of several mind-controlled “sleeper agents”? Does this connect to the Serpents and their “buyer”? And just what are those pills that Ross secretly gulps down in times of stress? Is there a fiendish mastermind pulling the strings somewhere in the shadows? This may be the ultimate test to prove that Sam is truly worthy of that Vibranium red-white-and-blue shield…

Well, Mackie is certainly worthy of the lead title role in this new chapter in Cap’s big-screen saga. He brings a swaggering confidence and energy in the many action sequences, especially in the big hostage rescue early in the first act. But as things calm down a bit Mackie shows us Sam’s vulnerability, struggling with bouts of self-doubt and feeling the burden of his new very public role (and being a role model). He never loses that easygoing aura of coolness, tossing off some great asides. And then there’s his “boss of bosses” screen icon Ford who dives right into the role first played by the late great William Hurt. Happily, we get a flashback of him in full military regalia complete with a bushy mustache. His version of Ross is different as he tries to change from a braying “brass-buster” to a statesman who is learning to trust those “enhanced heroes” now that he’s in the Oval Office. But Ford shows us his weariness and inner sadness due to his estrangement from his adored daughter Betty. Ramirez is an endearing wise guy so eager to prove himself by soaring into the fray, Torres. At the opposite extreme is the worn-down but not out, cynical Isaiah given dignity and gravitas by Lumbly. Esposito is a silky smooth criminal as the sneering “master of mayhem” Sidewinder. An interesting new screen addition to the MCU is the intense and compelling Shira Haas as Ruth, the petite powerhouse that’s in charge of protecting Ross. Oh, and there’s the return of an actor from the earlier days of the MCU . Tim Blake Nelson is back (from 2008’s THE INCREDIBLE HULK) as the brilliant but sinister Samuel Sterns, though he’s not the only familiar face (hey, I’m no spoiler).

That new name on the director’s chair belongs to Julius Onah, who last gave us the smart thriller LUCE back in 2019. He’s adapted well to the MCU, giving a sizzling snap to the frenetic battles, putting us in the thick of the chaos while conveying the bone-crunching panic and the need for rapid strategies (Sam has to deal with any surprises in the blink of an eye). Plus he supplies an added layer of suspense even in some dialogue-heavy exchange in those dark meeting rooms and offices (and a bunker). Later Onah expands his scope as the conflict heads to the very open high seas with Sam and Joaquin in full TOP GUN mode. And Onah is to be commended for bringing the story in at just two hours sparing us the frequent super-hero cinematic ‘bloat”, though five or six minutes could have been trimmed. That editing might have helped with the big villain reveal since the makeup choices and motivations feel a bit forced despite the team of five screenwriters. Still, I wasn’t expecting the “deep dives” as they retrieved elements of that second MCU flick in 2008 while taking its “McGuffin” from the lambasted ETERNALS. Much of that will be forgiven as a comics fan favorite, the very savage rampaging Red Hulk roars into action to provide a ferocious finale fight (since Bruce Banner’s Hulk is now tamed, it’s great to see that destructive snarling giant again in a different hue). Despite its missteps, this is probably the best of the post-ENDGAME pre-D&W (aside from the Sony Spideys) MCU offering, though not as strong and steady as the Steve Rogers trilogy, so Marvel-maniacs should get a great action rush with Mackie as Sam Wilson in CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD.

A high point of the day was when Anthony Mackie, who plays Captain America, took to the skies aboard a HC-130J Combat King II aircraft and tandem jumped with a group of pararescuemen from the 58th Rescue Squadron from almost 13000 ft.

The character of Sam Wilson, played by Mackie in the film, served in the Air Force’s 58th Rescue Squadron, making this moment all the more special. It’s going to be exciting for audiences to see Sam Wilson as Captain America for the first time!

Over the weekend, at the first-ever Brazil D23 fan event, Marvel Studios debuted a brand-new trailer and poster for CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD, which opens in theaters on February 14, 2025.

Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson/Captain America, and Danny Ramirez, who portrays Joaquin Torres/Falcon, were on hand to greet fans before the new trailer was shown to the excited Brazil D23 crowd.

Anthony Mackie Wields the Shield In CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD In First Trailer

Today, Marvel Studios shared the teaser trailer and poster for “Captain America: Brave New World,” featuring Anthony Mackie as Captain America.

The Falcon, played by Mackie in previous MCU films, officially took on the mantle of Captain America in the finale of “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” on Disney+ in 2021.

After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford in his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.

Did ya see who’s also in the teaser? MAXXXINE – Review

Director Ti West and actor Mia Goth are back with a third film in the X horror series. MAXXXINE is a sequel to 2022’s X, while the second in the series, PEARL (also 2022), was a prequel. The first film, X, was a surprise hit at SXSW with audiences and critics, a kind of fun, tongue-in-cheek homage to both horror and porno films of the late 1970s and early 1980s, where the owner of a strip joint and his pals set out in make a porno film titled “The Farmers’ Daughters” at a rural house they have rented from an elderly couple, but without telling the old folks what kind of film they are making. Mia Goth plays in dual roles as one of the actresses in the porno, Maxine, and the elderly farm wife, Pearl. Following the traditions of horror films of that earlier era, their sexual misbehavior is punished by murder and mayhem.

MAXXINE is set in 1985 Hollywood, when the Night Stalker serial killer was roaming the streets. Mia Goth again plays Maxine, the sole survivor of the Texas massacre in the first movie, who is now working in the Hollywood adult film industry under the name Maxine Minx, while concealing her violent past. Maxine is ambitious to make the leap to mainstream movies via horror films, and gets her chance in an audition for “The Puritan II,” a sequel to a horror hit directed by Elizabeth Bender (Elizabeth Debicki).

The film opens with black-and-white home movie footage of Maxine as a child performing on stage while hear her unseen preacher daddy (Simon Prast), who encourages her ambitions to be the “star” of the church, which sets up a backstory for ambitious Maxine. Maxine’s ambitions to step up to stardom via horror is backed by her agent/lawyer Teddy Knight (Giancarlo Esposito). But her closest friend and confidant is Leon (musician Moses Sumney), a clerk at the X-rated video store under her upstairs apartment. Ambitious and hardworking Maxine has a second job, as a live performer at a peep show, and declines two co-workers’ separate invitations to join them at a party at a fancy house near the Hollywood sign. As the Nightstalker takes more victims and police detectives (Bobby Cannavale and Michelle Monaghan) investigate the murders, a mysterious man, wearing black leather gloves, pays to see Maxine at the peep show but reacts with anger at what he sees. Shortly after, a sleazy Southern private detective, Labat (Kevin Bacon), contacts Maxine with a threat to reveal her past if she doesn’t accept his mysterious employer’s invitation to the house under the Hollywood sign.

MAXXXINE is absolutely packed with movie references and shots of icon Hollywood locations, including famous backlot sets, which is actually the biggest thrill in this horror-homage thriller.

As you can guess from the cast, the third film in the series has a bigger budget and hence a more star-studded cast, including Kevin Bacon, Bobby Cannavale, Michelle Monaghan and Giancarlo Esposito.

Like the first film, MAXXXINE is less an actual scary horror movie than an homage to horror movies, and to soft porn videos and drive-in fare of the early 1980s era. The Hollywood setting means the filmmakers could include wonderful location shots, such as the set for PSYCHO, and both visual and dialog references to a host of classic thrillers, including CHINATOWN, often with a dark humor twist, such as one with a Buster Keaton impersonator.

Mia Goth again does the good job she did the the first two films, and adding the stars to the cast are a bonus. A particular standout is Kevin Bacon, as the oily New Orleans private detective bedeviling Maxine, in a sleazy version of Jack Nicholson’s character in CHINTOWN (complete with bandaged nose) crossed with a number of gangster film baddies, until he gets his comeuppance via Giancarlo Esposito’s “Better Call Saul”-ish agent/lawyer.

In fact, the too-few moments like that and the many other movie references, along with the chance to see behind to facades of some famous film sets, such as going inside through the doors of the mansion on the hill behind the Bates Motel, are the major thrills in MAXXXINE. Otherwise, the movie is not very suspenseful or scary, and it has less tongue-in-cheek humor or Hammer Film fake bloodiness than the first one (although cheesy Hammer Film effects do get a mention). Of course, there is some gore and violence, but much less than you might expect, and the tension and thrills are sparse, as are the dark humor moments. It’s not the first time an indie film has been diminished by a bigger budget, of course, but audiences expecting the same horror-homage entertainment as the first one are likely to feel let down. However, fans of Old Hollywood and classic thrillers will get some treats in the movie’s tour of backlots and back streets circa 1985.

MAXXXINE opens Friday, July 5, in theaters.

ABIGAIL – Review

An old saying goes that “You can’t keep a good man down”. Well, despite the meager box office returns for last year’s big Dracula flicks, RENFIELD, and THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER, this weekend’s new monster movie believes that “You can’t keep a good vampire down”. Really, they just keep popping up, just check out those Christopher Lee Hammer Film classics (seriously, they’re loads of frightful fun). Ha, “down for the Count”…and enough of the “groaners”. Although this new flick’s working title was “Dracula’s Daughter”, this chiller isn’t officially connected to the Bram Stoker creation. For one thing, it’s set in today’s world, so a speedy beaten van replaces the horse-drawn carriages. Oh, and it’s got elements of a crime thriller. This tale concerns a “snatch and grab” crew who get more than they bargained for when their target is ABIGAIL.

The film’s opening moments introduce us to the title character (Alisha Weir), a preteen lass indulging in her passion for dance as she performs “Swan Lake” in an empty theatre. Ah, it turns out that someone else aside from the family driver is waiting for her to head home. Six black-clad adults in an old commercial van follow her towncar through the night, past the city, and into her gated mansion. As one of the crew hacks into the estate’s security system, a trio swiftly moves in. Young Abigail believes she’s safe in her bedroom, until the invaders burst in, and one injects her with a powerful tranquilizer. She’s placed in a large duffel bag, and the trio sprints back to the van just as another vehicle with Abigail’s father shows up. The van speeds away, far out into the country, and pulls up to another gated mansion, although this one has seen better days. They’re greeted in the library by the mastermind who has put them together for the “job”, the suave Lambert (Giancarlo Esposito). He explains that they will hide out there with Abigail for 24 hours until the ransom is met (plenty of food and drink are provided along with beds). He insists that they don’t reveal their own names, deciding to bestow “code monikers”. The surly leader is “Frank” (Dan Stevens). The slightly baked driver is “Dean” (Angus Cloud). “Sammy” (Kathryn Newton) is the loopy punk-rock “hacker”. The boozy “muscle” is “Peter” (Kevin Durand). “Rickles” (as in the the insult comic king, ya’ hockey puck) is an ex-military sniper (William Catlett). And the “druggist” who put Abigail to sleep is “Joey” (Melissa Barrera), who will be the one to check on her, though Joey will be masked. Lambert departs, as most of the gang hits the bar. Joey forms a bond with the now fully awake Abigail, though the the little girl makes an odd icy threat while putting out a creepy “vibe”. This alarms Frank who visits their prey and is more rattled when she reveals the identity of her powerful papa. He tells the crew they need to split just as steel plates slide over the windows and barred gates appear over the doors with a loud “clang”. Could the kidnapping have been an elaborate “set-up” to trap them? Then panic engulfs the criminals as something lurking in the shadows begins to strike…

Though she’s not the title character, the story’s main focus is the conflicted, tragic ex-combat medic played by the soulful Barrera. We find out some of her motives in taking the “one last crime gig”, which are also the reason Joey forms an intense almost immediate bond with Abigail. Barrera’s both tender and very tough as she clashes with her cohorts when they try to “lean on the kid”. Speaking of, the ads have let the “cat” (or is it bat) out of the “bag” on the “tiny dancer” (the crew’s codename for her). Weir switches from sweet innocence to murderous menace at the flutter of her tutu. Her dance moves turn “death stalk” remind us of the pre-murder “mamba” of “last year’s demon doll” M3GAN. And somehow Weir conveys that longing well after she reveals her true form. Much like Stevens who is the all too human monster in the story, a bullying blowhard who’s always looking out for “#1”.He’s engaging even as he sounds as though he stepped out of a late 40s noir crime caper. Stevens appears to be having almost as much fun as Newton whose Sammy almost becomes the audience surrogate as she is quick to bolt when things go too weird. Her funky free spirit lightens things considerably. Newton gets almost as many laughs as Durand’s Peter, the confused lunkhead who’s not used to responding with his brain rather than his fists, which are usually clutching a bottle. Catlett is more of a mystery as the tightly-wound triggerman, while Esposito is a terrific sarcastic snob as the effete master planner Lambert. However, the film’s real breakout star may tragically be Cloud as the hustling streetwise getaway man, who passed shortly after wrapping his role.

After jumpstarting the SCREAM franchise with the last two entries, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett try to put a new spin on the old bloodsucker on the loose in a haunted house genre but mixing in a criminal team much like those bickering, but still cool RESERVOIR DOGS, and assorted other “heist” flicks. And it does indeed inject some fresh blood into the genre, while also exploring the idea of an immortal killing machine trapped forever in a child’s body that was a big part of NEAR DARK and INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE. Plus the filmmakers surprise us with the amount of humor generously sprinkled in (something that many newer terror tales lack). The gang can’t quite accept the supernatural, then try to recall the “rules” from pop culture (how to kill them, powers, etc.). And this movie’s take on the classic monster is interesting, especially in the look of the vamps, eschewing the twin fangs and opting for a row of jagged choppers that shred throats. Unfortunately, this becomes part of the problem with the flick, as the settings and characters are constantly drenched in the sticky crimson fluid. I kept thinking about the actors rushing to the showers after they wrapped for what must have been a looong day. This indulgence adds to the unneeded length of the film, as characters engage in double and triple-crosses when not tossing each other in the walls and antique furnishings (we get that vampires are strong…move on). And the action doesn’t even adhere to the “new rules” they have for the undead. Perhaps the plot is spinning its wheels to establish the time passage from the wee hours to dawn and back to dusk again. It’s a shame since there are lots of original flourishes on vamp lore, though the finale result isn’t nearly as engaging and graceful as the dance moves of that bloody ballerina ABIGAIL.

Writer-director Ti West (The House of the Devil) followed-up to his hit slasher movie X, with PEARL in 2022. Revisiting the unforgettable character Pearl, the film was about the obsessive old voyeur who relentlessly stalked Mia Goth’s Maxine Minx character across the Texas farm that Pearl never managed to escape. Played in the first film by Mia Goth in a dual role, Maxine/ Pearl explored the dualities and longings of two very different women—a young porn actress in 1979 dreaming of stardom and an octogenarian born at the turn of the last century who yearns for youthful attention.

Pearl remained an indelibly strong, empathetic, even winsome character. Viewed in tandem with X, West’s second installment in the franchise made a poignant statement on aging, regret, and the passage of time. (review)

THE MANDALORIAN Reveals Cool Character Posters For October 30 Season 2 Premiere

Today, Disney+ shared brand-new character artwork from the highly anticipated second season of Lucasfilm’s critically acclaimed series, “The Mandalorian.”

The Mandalorian and the Child continue their journey, facing enemies and rallying allies as they make their way through a dangerous galaxy in the tumultuous era after the collapse of the Galactic Empire. 

“The Mandalorian” stars Pedro Pascal, with guest stars Gina Carano, Carl Weathers and Giancarlo Esposito.

Directors for the new season include Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rick Famuyiwa, Carl Weathers, Peyton Reed and Robert Rodriguez. Showrunner Jon Favreau serves as executive producer along with Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson, with Karen Gilchrist serving as co-executive producer.

The new season premieres Friday, October 30, streaming only on Disney+.
