Evelyn (Emily Blunt) braves the unknown in “A Quiet Place Part II.”
If there is one film that will get people back in the theaters, it is without a doubt A QUIET PLACE II. Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family (Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe) must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path. The film opens in theaters May 28.
On Tuesday, Emily Blunt and Howard Stern discussed A QUIET PLACE as well as A QUIET PLACE PART II, but the biggest takeaway from the interview was the rumor about FANTASTIC FOUR casting.
Word on the street was they’d been cast to portray the superhero group’s romantically entwined characters: Sue Storm, a.k.a. the Invisible Woman, and Reed Richards, a.k.a. the ultra-stretchy Mr. Fantastic.
“That is fan-casting. No one has received a phone call,” Blunt told Howard. “That’s just people saying, ‘Wouldn’t that be great?’”
Considering A QUIET PLACE PART II features a world ravaged by an unexpected and difficult to understand menace, Howard thought his guest’s new film was perfect for the COVID-19 era.
“It’s sort of eerie how much the themes resonate with people much more now,” Emily agreed. “The world expands [in “Part II.”] The family’s home has been decimated, so they have to venture out, and it’s like which neighborhood will extend their hand to you? Who wants to help you and touch you and look out for you?”
The movie premiered in New York City last March just as the pandemic grabbed ahold of the world. As the public health situation worsened, Krasinski decided to pull the film from theaters just before its wide release. Now, over a year later, “A Quiet Place Part II” finally has its chance to shine.
“I feel like I’ve been sitting on my hands for a year, waiting for people to see it with my knees juggling. I just want people to see it so badly,” Emily said. “I never tell people to see my films, ever—this one is such an inspired sequel and I’m really proud of it.”
Before it went to Scarlett Johansson, Emily Blunt passed on the role of Black Widow. She explains the contract issue that forced the decision while talking with Howard Stern.
Lastly, the two discussed where the long-awaited sequel for EDGE OF TOMORROW stands along with Blunt’s thoughts on the original movie and working with Tom Cruise.
He never directed a feature film. He never had a screenplay produced. Yes, he dabbled in front of the camera, but he usually played himself or would appear for a few seconds in a “cameo” role. Frequently he would be given an executive producer credit, which we would see many times over the last couple of decades. And yet, Stan Lee was a major force behind four of the twenty biggest domestic box office hit motion pictures of all time. This warranted the following report from today’s Hollywood Reporter, which began:
Stan Lee, the legendary writer, editor, and publisher of Marvel Comics whose fantabulous but flawed creations made him a real-life superhero to comic book lovers everywhere has died. He was 95.
Lee, who began in the business in 1939 and created or co-created Black Panther, Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Mighty Thor, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, Daredevil and Ant-Man, among countless other characters, died early Monday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, a family representative told The Hollywood Reporter.
So, why are we both mourning and celebrating the life and legacy of Stanley Martin Lieber (his birth name) on this site today? That’s because he’s added so much fun to the movie experience with his creations and cameos. His 95 plus years was an incredible adventure, almost as amazing as anything he imagined (and helped publish).
Born on December 22 in 1922, Stan was in the right place, and had the right relatives, at the beginning of the golden age of comic books. Thanks in part to his uncle and cousin, he landed an assistant position at Martin Goodman’s Timely (Marvel much later) Comics in 1939. Soon he fulfilled his ambition to be a writer, penning the one-page prose story, “Captain America Foils the Traitor’s Revenge” in Captain America Comics #3 in 1941. Stan became an interim editor until he entered the Army in 1943, eventually earning the classification as “playwright” for his work on training films and instruction manuals. Postwar he returned to Timely as editor and oversaw the books’ transition to Westerns, funny animals, teen humor, combat, and, changing the company name to Atlas Comics, science fiction featuring all manner of giant monsters like “Gloom”.
Stan serves in WWII
Proving that “everything old is new again”, the superheroes returned in the late 50’s (though Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman never left) when rival National Periodicals scored a hit with the revamped Flash and the Justice League. Stan’s boss Goodman told him to come up with a “super team”. Lee had become frustrated with his job and thought about pursuing a new life as a “real” writer. Luckily his wife Joan suggested that he try writing a superhero book that he would find interesting. Thanks to her prodding, and the stunning art by co-creator Jack Kirby, the Fantastic Four was a 1961 smash. As Atlas became Marvel, the new heroes arrived at a furious pace: Dr. Strange, the Incredible Hulk, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Mighty Avengers, Daredevil, and the company’s solo superstar and mascot, the Amazing Spider-Man. Stan also decided to give the artists full credits on the opening splash page, even bestowing alliterative “nicknames” like “dashing” Don Heck and “sturdy” Steve Ditko. He soon had his own editorial column, “Stan’s Soapbox” in all the books, adding to the informal, friendly vibe of Marvel Comics. College students picked up on this and the irreverent attitudes of the book where all the heroes had real-life problems or hang-ups (Spidey had trouble paying his rent, Iron Man had a bad ticker, etc.). Stan himself was in demand as a speaker at campuses all around the country, turning him into a promoting “pied piper” for the comics industry.
Stan and wife Joan in the early days of their marriage
But Stan yearned for his heroes to make the jump to other media. There were network Saturday morning cartoons and the syndicated limited animated (being very generous here) package of “The Marvel Superheroes”. He eventually moved from Marvel’s NYC HQ to LA in order to get the properties into live-action TV shows and feature films. CBS had a hit show with “The Incredible Hulk” starring Bill Bixby, but Spidey, Dr. Strange, and Captain America tanked. However, Stan became more of a household name as the narrator of the Saturday morning cartoon, “Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends”. Finally, Marvel was in the movies with 1986’s HOWARD THE DUCK, but that was a legendary flop. The next decade was littered with false starts and unreleased movies. In 1998, BLADE struck box office gold, followed two years later by the X-MEN, and topped in 2002 by SPIDER-MAN. For many of those films, Stan would pop up on screen for a quick wink at the camera, as with THE FANTASTIC FOUR, HULK, and DAREDEVIL.
In 2016, finally together on screen in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE
Then something happened that Stan probably never dreamed of. Marvel started producing big-budget films based on their own heroes and properties. Not only was Stan promoting the movies on TV and via interviews, but he would also have a cameo in each film. Originally Stan said he’d just show up in films based on characters he created, but over the last ten years his cameos have become part of the Marvel Studios format and design, something that fans look forward to as much as the opening “comic pages flip” of the company logo and the post and mid-credits bonus scenes (with a long list of other writers and artists Stan has collaborated with). Perhaps some of the filmmakers considered him a “good luck charm”. Here’s a montage of his “walk-ons” so far:
So far? But he’s gone to the Comicon in the sky, you say. Well, last year or so, James Gunn shot his scenes for the next few films that would be inserted later. Though IMDB won’t confirm, I’ll bet we’ll see his mischievous grin in CAPTAIN MARVEL, the Infinity Wars finale, and maybe SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME over the next year. Plus there are the two X-Men flicks. Well, I can tell you that sharp-eyed viewers will spot a silent cameo in RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET in just 9 days. Oh, and “the man” did get some major honors. In 2008 he received the National Medal of the Arts from President George W Bush, followed in 2011 by his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Wow, how lucky can one planet be? We were treated to nearly a century of Stan Lee. And his gifts will continue in inspire and entertain forever. That is some kind of legacy. What more can I add, except…

A young cast of up-and-coming talent tries their best to save the world, while also attempting to save this struggling film property. Spoiler alert: they only save one of the two. Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell are all talented actors who often breathe life into roles. And yet they even seem bored in 20th Century Fox’s third attempt at depicting “Marvel’s first family.”
The most recent adaptation of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s superhero team wants to be a lot of things. Distancing itself from the last filmic failure, this new FANTASTIC FOUR is part character drama, part sci-fi exploration, part coming-of-age story, and part superhero origin film, all painted in a dark and muddy pallet and featuring some of the worst CGI you will see in a theater this year. It has some good ideas bubbling under the surface, but there’s a major clash in tone between some of these ideas. It tries to be a dark and serious film with the super-powered characters being treated more like monsters than heroes, and yet it also includes goofy comic-book style dialogue that feels hokey in a film made in this style. A lame Saturday morning cartoon score is obnoxiously bombastic and glaringly out of place, and only adds to the odd combo of conflicting ideas. I appreciate that this newest comic-book adaptation tries to set itself apart by telling a new version of the story and structuring itself around character development instead of action scenes. But, in the end, a film just doesn’t work when the script is at complete odds with the direction of the film.
We’re first introduced to the characters of Reed Richards and Ben Grimm as little boys. Richards is building a device in his parent’s garage that can transfer particles to an unknown location. Flash forward 7 years and Richards (Miles Teller) and Grimm (Jamie Bell) have now made an updated version for their school’s science fair. Even though the teachers dismiss this invention, a doctor who works for an acclaimed institute and his adoptive daughter Sue Storm (Kate Mara) happen to be walking through the fair – because these types of coincidences happen all the time – and offer Richards the opportunity to build a larger device in their facility. Of course we then meet Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan) and Victor Doom (Toby Kebbell) during the building process because this is the Fantastic Four after all. But in this version of the group gaining their powers, the device Richards builds transports them to another dimension; to a planet that is covered in rock formations and neon green goo. Note to self: if you ever get transported to another dimension, don’t touch the neon green goo.
It’s in this middle half after they all get transformed where the film started to pique my interest. An overly drawn out opening feels exactly that, and the final act retreats into the standard heroics we have seen before. The only scenes that really come together take place in the second act. There’s a little bit of a David Cronenberg body horror element once the team arrives back to Earth from the other dimension. We see them disfigured and scared. A genuine sense of fear as to what they are now and what they are capable of is effectively shown. Seeing Reed Richards elongated in an unnatural state and strapped down to a medical table is quite an alarming image. The same can be said when we see Johnny Storm burnt and unconscious, still smoldering from being ignited in flames. These images are frightening and provide a unique alternative look to how super powers are typically shown.
It is moments like this where you can see what Josh Trank was trying to do with the film. Much like his previous film CHRONICLE, he seems to want to show the superheroes as more like outsiders or monsters. It’s a novel idea and it’s closer in tone to what Bryan Singer has done with the X-Men series. But I suspect that too many cooks in the kitchen ruined the original concept. I imagine Trank had an idea, but the result of two other writers and studio heads kept pulling the film into a more sellable product. The dialogue and characterizations go one direction while the visuals and concept go another. It’s like seeing Reed Richards stretched out so thin trying to grasp at polar opposite ideas. Since Josh Trank is no superhero, this task is too much for him to handle.
Considering FANTASTIC FOUR tries to be soooo different and to be soooo many things, it’s sort of shocking how dull it winds up feeling. None of the characterizations, ideas, and themes ever stick. So much is lazily setup, but then never developed enough to make the audience truly care. As these super-team films repeatedly teach us, you can’t save the world unless everyone works together as a team. With FANTASTIC FOUR, there is nothing that works in unison to save it from imminent doom.
Overall rating: 2 out of 5

Oscar-nominated composer Marco Beltrami creates a stirring, evocative score for Twentieth Century Fox’s contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, FANTASTIC FOUR.
Beltrami co-scored the film with iconic minimalist composer Philip Glass.
FANTASTIC FOUR opens in theaters nationwide on August 7, 2015.
The soundtrack is terrific and is available digitally now; on CD August 14, 2015 from Sony Classical.
Directed by Josh Trank, and screenwriters Jeremy Slater and Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: First Class,” X-Men; Days of Future Past”, “Sherlock Holmes”), FANTASTIC FOUR is a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s first, and longest-running superhero team. Based on the Marvel comic written by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the film follows four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe that alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.
The film stars Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Kate Mara as Susan Storm, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm, and Toby Kebbell as Victor von Doom.
The Fantastic Four score developed from the inquisitiveness of the film’s young protagonists. Beltrami explains, “What we were trying to achieve musically was the spirit of curiosity and innocence. We were inspired by the film’s scientific exploration from the point of view of these young characters, and how their curiosity develops into a position of power.”
To capture the transformation of the film’s characters, particularly that of villain Victor Domashev (Toby Kebbell), Beltrami wanted the music to transform as well. This was accomplished by taking the Fantastic Four theme, then “detuning” the orchestra and processing the instruments for a mutated sound.
Beltrami, who previously scored superhero films Wolverine and Hellboy, was excited by the prospect of exploring new musical territory with his FANTASTIC FOURcollaborators. “It was inspiring working with Josh Trank. He was making something different from the normal superhero movie and sparked a lot of ideas,” explained Beltrami.
On working with Philip Glass, “Philip is a brilliant composer. It was a great creative experience to be able to bounce ideas back and forth with him. I’m looking forward to collaborating with him again.”
Marco Beltrami’s musical palette as a composer spans all film genres. He has two Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score: 3:10 to Yuma, starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, and Best Picture-winner The Hurt Locker, starring Jeremy Renner. He also scored Snowpiercer, starring Chris Evans; The Giver, starring Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges; The Drop, starring Tom Hardy; World War Z, starring Brad Pitt; and AMC’s spy thriller Turn.
Marco Beltrami’s upcoming projects include Hitman: Agent 47, Gods of Egypt, and The Englishman.
Three of Philip Glass’s previous film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards: “Kundun” (1997), “The Hours” (2002) and “Notes On A Scandal” (2006). In 1999, he won the Golden Globe for his soundtrack to “The Truman Show”.

Another San Diego Comic-Con International has come and gone. This year was a great year for films, friends, and fun! Check out my Top 10 cinematic moments from this years con. Also, be sure to share your favorite moments from this year. I’d love to hear from you! Now, let’s get started!
10. BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE
Let me start off by saying that I have not been looking forward to this film. I’m not stoked on the new batsuit, and disagree with their casting of Lex Luthor, simply because I feel as though the character should be older. Having said that, this is the best trailer that I have seem thus far, and I really hope that they prove me wrong. Check out the all new trailer that debuted in Hall H and let me know what you think!
Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.
9. FANTASTIC FOUR
The FANTASTIC FOUR trailer was also released in Hall H, during the Fox panel on Saturday evening. In it, we see Dr. Doom’s powers and a young Reed Richards building a teleportation device in the garage. I’m a big fan of origin stories, so I’m curious to see the transformations of the characters. Plus, Miles Teller is an incredible performer. I’m excited to see what he can bring to a superhero.

8. WARCRAFT
From Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures comes WARCRAFT, an epic adventure of world-colliding conflict based on Blizzard Entertainment’s global phenomenon. This movie has been in production for years, but this is the first time that they showed an eager Hall H crowd any clips of the film. Unfortunately, I cannot show you those because they have yet to be released. It was really neat too, because they opened up all of the curtains, so we were surrounded by video screens. You wouldn’t get the same effect from a YouTube clip. I can, however, show you these badass character posters that they showed us. Hopefully, they will release a trailer soon!
The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.
So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something.
7. THE HIVE
Nerdiest Presents : THE HIVE had a pretty good run at Comic-Con this year. I sat down with Director David Yarovesky and stars Gabriel Basso, Gabrielle Walsh, Jacob Zachar and Steve Agee to talk about their film, and pick on each other a bit. Check it out here.
They also released the first trailer for the film. You should watch it. You might recognize someone’s name… [Cough… Cough… Me… Cough]
When Camp Yellow Jacket has fallen into chaos, teen counselor Adam wakes up in a boarded up cabin with no memory of who or where he is. His only clue as to what’s happening is the notes he’s scrawled for himself on the walls and the disturbing physical transformation he must overcome. The only memories he has aren’t his own, yet those memories may be the key to Adam’s survival.
6. SUICIDE SQUAD
See what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero in this first trailer, directly from Comic-Con 2015, for director David Ayer’s SUICIDE SQUAD. Not only did the cast take a break from filming in Toronto, but they blew Hall H away with this surprise teaser. People could not stop talking about Jared Leto as The Joker. In fact, the SUICIDE SQUAD trailer got way more buzz than BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE.
The action adventure brings DC Comics’ super villain team to the big screen and stars two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith as Deadshot; Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn; Oscar winner Jared Leto as the Joker; Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg; Jai Courtney as Boomerang; and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.
5. THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2’s Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Willow Shields, Director Francis Lawrence, and Producer Nina Jacobson held a Press Conference after their Hall H panel at the Hilton Bayfront, and WAMG was there. Check out the press conference in its entirety below as Jennifer talks reality TV, Malibu, and playing such a strong character. Video is below… because, come on… there’s no other way to capture the essence of J-Law’s awesomeness!
With the nation of Panem in a full-scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow [Donald Sutherland] in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale [Liam Hemsworth], Finnick [Sam Claflin] and Peeta [Josh Hutcherson] – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to liberate the citizens of Panem, and stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.
4. VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN
The award for funniest panel, by far, goes to VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN. James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe kept attendees in stitches, as the panel basically turned into one big dick joke. Chris Hardwick only added to the fun as moderator. Check it out below…
Written by Max Landis, when Dr. Victor Frankenstein (James McAvoy) and his trusted assistant Igor (Daniel Radcliffe) go too far in their noble attempts to aid humanity, Victor’s obsession turns to madness. He then unleashes his final creation –a monstrous figure that holds unimaginable terror for anyone its path.
3. THE HATEFUL EIGHT
Quentin Tarantino is back with his eighth film, THE HATEFUL EIGHT, and tore Hall H up! I was really excited for this, since I have yet to do a Tarantino film junket, and am a huge fan. Despite the rough start (such as a leaked script), Tarantino’s newest adventure is sure to be anything but ordinary! Filmed in Telluride, Colorado, this spaghetti western takes place roughly around a decade after the Civil War. Eight strangers find themselves stranded in a blizzard. They may survive the blizzard, but can they survive each other? Check out the video below!
THE HATEFUL EIGHT features an amazing cast such as Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Samuel L. Jackson, and Michael Madsen. Since it’s a Tarantino film, be ready for some next level gun slinging! I don’t normally camp out for Hall H, but I got in there for this one. It was worth it!
2. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS
Fans at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H were treated to a special look behind the scenes of Star Wars:The Force Awakens by director J.J. Abrams, producer and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and writer Lawrence Kasdan.
The filmmakers were joined on stage by cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford to the surprise and delight of fans.
At the end of the Hall H presentation, the entire Hall H audience of more than 6,000 fans were all invited to continue the celebration and join cast and filmmakers at a surprise Star Wars Fan Concert. The San Diego Symphony performed the classic Star Wars music from John Williams at the Embarcadero Marina Park South.
1. DEADPOOL
DEADPOOL was the icing on the Hall H cake. Audiences stood up and cheered “One more time!” after the trailer as Ryan Reynolds, and the rest of the cast were about to leave the stage. Unfortunately, the trailer has not been released, so check out these new images from the film. (Yes, I am aware that the trailer has been leaked online, but I’m not a jerk so you’ll just have to wait!)
Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
What do you think? What was your favorite Comic-Con moment? Let us know below! Until next year kids…
