In A QUIET PLACE PART ONE, we witnessed the aftermath of the alien invasion, with some flashbacks interspersed with the “Death Angels” arrival on the meteorites, emergence and the subsequent non-stop attacks on anything that made even the slightest noise. We came to love the Abbott family and mourned when husband and father Lee Abbott was killed when saving his children from the claws of the monsters.
In A QUIET PLACE PART II, audiences saw The Abbott family and their little town decimated. As the Abbotts, Evelyn and her children, hunt for any viable refuge from the sounds that draw the omnipresent creatures, they stumble upon an old acquaintance turned into a determined loner whose past makes it difficult for them to trust his true intentions. This is Emmett portrayed by Cillian Murphy. As was briefly referenced in PART II in a conversation between Murphy (Emmett) and Djimon Hounsou (Man on Island), the two spoke of how people tried to escape New York City after the initial invasion. The film starred Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, Djimon Hounsou, and John Krasinski.
Now audiences will get to experience the day the world went quiet in director Michael Sarnoski’s A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE. Paramount Pictures has dropped a new featurette with the stars of the film, Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Djimon Hounsou and Alex Wolff discussing their roles and the film.
The director of 2021’s PIG is once again working with composer Alexis Grapsas as well as cinematographer Pat Scola. A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE is based on characters created by Bryan Woods & Scott Beck and a story by John Krasinski and Michael Sarnoski, with the screenplay by Michael Sarnoski.

“It’s the end of days. No more people.” It’s time once again to stay totally silent and totally still in the cinema when you go to see A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE. Just as audiences did in 2018 when director John Krasinski unleashed his horror film A QUIET PLACE on an unsuspecting public, everyone in the theater went dead quiet so as to not give away the Abbott family’s hiding places.
A QUIET PLACE: PART II showed the aftermath of the deadly events at home and the new terrors the family faced in the outside world. The sequel starred Emily Blunt, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, Djimon Hounsou and John Krasinski. From the opening moments of the film, the family was on the run, beyond any semblance of security and searching for refuge in a town gone mad with fear. In a time when empathy and connection had nearly vanished from the world, the Abbotts strived not only to protect each other from the threat of sound but to find hope in the terrifying hush around them.
As was briefly referenced in PART II in a conversation between Murphy (Emmett) and Hounsou (Man on Island), now comes A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE – the day the world went quiet. “That day, we got here the same way as you. We were in the city when we heard the hurricane sirens. Once they knew they couldn’t swim, the National Guard were told to start loading the boats. Any boat they could find. So as soon as people saw they got out safe, everyone just started pushing forward. And that’s when the screaming started. They had 12 boats lined up on the dock that day. Only two got out.”
Starring Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff and Djimon Hounsou, Paramount Pictures has released an unsettling new trailer for the upcoming film from director Michael Sarnoski.
The film is based on characters created by Bryan Woods & Scott Beck and a story by John Krasinski and Michael Sarnoski, with the screenplay by Michael Sarnoski.

Director John Krasinski and late night talk show host Stephen Colbert of CBS’s “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert“, along with his wife Evie, celebrated together when Krasinski was the show’s FIRST guest since the lockdown in 2020 to talk about A QUIET PLACE PART II. The film picks up right where the 2018 movie ended and stars Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe and Djimon Hounsou.
Watch the interview from March 9, 2020 where the two discuss horror films, parenthood, calls he and Blunt’s work “the collaboration of his career” and why he made the first movie.
Those who saw A QUIET PLACE in theaters will remember the silence and how motionless the audience was – no cell phone texting, no candy wrappers crinkling, and no one eating popcorn. We became active participants and it was a collective, heightened experience.
If anyone is going to save theaters this summer it’ll be Krasinski and Emily Blunt. This movie is going to be HUGE, what will get people back into cinemas for that group experience and will see big office returns. In a recent NY Times interview, Krasinski says, “I have no idea what’s going to happen with the box office,” he said. “What’s most important to me is that if you want to see this movie, I’m going to show it to you.”
During Thursday’s interview, the filmmaker and host discussed the terrifying film that as Colbert puts it, “has alot of heart,” the amazing sound design, his surprise visits to the various screenings and how these movies are a “love letter to his kids”.
See this clip of how he surprised audiences in Miami earlier this week.
Check out this hilarious 2020 interview with BBC Radio 1 on Blunt and Krasinski’s take on alternate titles for A QUIET PLACE. In November 2020, Variety reported: Jeff Nichols has been tapped to write and direct a third film in the franchise, based on an original idea from John Krasinski. The new installment will be released in 2022.

Evelyn (Emily Blunt) braves the unknown in “A Quiet Place Part II.”
If there is one film that will get people back in the theaters, it is without a doubt A QUIET PLACE II. Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family (Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe) must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize that the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sand path. The film opens in theaters May 28.
On Tuesday, Emily Blunt and Howard Stern discussed A QUIET PLACE as well as A QUIET PLACE PART II, but the biggest takeaway from the interview was the rumor about FANTASTIC FOUR casting.
Word on the street was they’d been cast to portray the superhero group’s romantically entwined characters: Sue Storm, a.k.a. the Invisible Woman, and Reed Richards, a.k.a. the ultra-stretchy Mr. Fantastic.
“That is fan-casting. No one has received a phone call,” Blunt told Howard. “That’s just people saying, ‘Wouldn’t that be great?’”
Considering A QUIET PLACE PART II features a world ravaged by an unexpected and difficult to understand menace, Howard thought his guest’s new film was perfect for the COVID-19 era.
“It’s sort of eerie how much the themes resonate with people much more now,” Emily agreed. “The world expands [in “Part II.”] The family’s home has been decimated, so they have to venture out, and it’s like which neighborhood will extend their hand to you? Who wants to help you and touch you and look out for you?”
The movie premiered in New York City last March just as the pandemic grabbed ahold of the world. As the public health situation worsened, Krasinski decided to pull the film from theaters just before its wide release. Now, over a year later, “A Quiet Place Part II” finally has its chance to shine.
“I feel like I’ve been sitting on my hands for a year, waiting for people to see it with my knees juggling. I just want people to see it so badly,” Emily said. “I never tell people to see my films, ever—this one is such an inspired sequel and I’m really proud of it.”
Before it went to Scarlett Johansson, Emily Blunt passed on the role of Black Widow. She explains the contract issue that forced the decision while talking with Howard Stern.
Lastly, the two discussed where the long-awaited sequel for EDGE OF TOMORROW stands along with Blunt’s thoughts on the original movie and working with Tom Cruise.

After the lights went down in the theater and the names of the production studios passed by, the theater goes quiet. The audience knows what to expect given the title and trailers for A QUIET PLACE. However, that quietness on the audience’s part doesn’t last long. Candy boxes shake. Phones ring. Phones silently buzz. Watches chirp. Even a baby cries – yes, an infant was in the theater with us. It’s an orchestra of simple sounds that might not have made much of an impact in any other movie, but being hyper-aware of each isolated noise amplified my fear for the family on screen even more.
A QUIET PLACE uses a simple premise to deliver intense fear. A family struggles to survive in silence at an isolated farmhouse while unknown creatures wait to make their move based on their heightened sense of sound. But with this simple premise, John Krasinski (who serves as one of the lead actors, writer, and director) is able to still deliver compelling characters and emotional drama that goes beyond the B-movie horror setup.
As you would expect, sound is an essential element to the film. Muffled sounds, slight whispers, the sounds of nature, and Marco Beltrami’s moody score are all carefully mixed together so that you often forget that you are watching a mainly dialogue-free film for the most part. On the other end of the spectrum, there are several items or setpieces where the fear of possible sound leaves you gripping the armrest. In typical Hitchcock fashion, children’s toys and exposed nails are shown with a knowing wink to the audience as we wait with bated breath for when they will come into play later.
Bryan Woods, Scott Beck, and John Krasinski’s script is also filled with several tender moments that never feel cloying. Emily Blunt, Noah Jupe, and Millicent Simmonds (a deaf actress who becomes the heart of the film) round out the family in peril. One particular highlight is when Emily Blunt comes downstairs to check on her husband in his workshop, which leads to a brief moment of dancing to Neil Young on a shared set of headphones. Each one is given room to make an impact on the story so that we actually care about each when the terror strikes.
Even though many of the trailers present the film more as a family drama, it’s definitely not afraid to run straight into horror territory. Krasinski shows an effective hand guiding these intense scenes. There are several sequences that feel instantly iconic, but the one that shows off Krasinski’s skill the most is the centerpiece “bathtub scene.” He stitches together three separate character’s actions so precisely, layering the tension with every carefully composed shot and movement. It’s a thrilling sequence in a film that easily has at least five memorable horror setpieces – many horror films would kill to have more than one.
For the most part, A QUIET PLACE hides its monsters for the better half of the film. Out of focus shots and slight movements into frame add just enough suspense without showing them in all their ghastly glory. While the final act borders on silly at times, the majority of the film is so nerve-racking that you sort of roll with it when they have a standoff-of-sorts with the creature at the end. In the end, you’re going to remember the film more for its depiction of familial love and sacrifice and its pulse-racing moments than the actual creatures. Krasinski shows you can have both a sincere family drama and a sincere monster movie and roll them into one simple and scary package.
