Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames return to their iconic roles and the movie also stars Alec Baldwin and newcomer Rebecca Ferguson in a “star-turning role” (Brian Viner, Daily Mail) as a mysterious double agent.

With his elite organization shut down by the CIA, agent Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his team (Renner, Pegg, Rhames) race against time to stop the rise of a new global threat, The Syndicate, a dangerous network of rogue operatives turned traitors. To stop them, Ethan must join forces with an elusive, disavowed agent (Ferguson) who may or may not be on his side as he faces his most impossible mission yet.

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON No. 1 Again At Weekend Box Office

Straight Outta Compton

There’s no stopping STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON at the box office. Moviegoers put Universal Pictures’ film at the number one spot again with an estimated $26.8 million. After two weeks, F. Gary Gray’s N.W.A. biopic now stands at $111.5 million worldwide.

The top 12 domestic weekend box office estimates below from Rentrak.

1. Straight Outta Compton – Universal – $26.8M
2. Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation – Paramount – $11.7M
3. Sinister 2 – Focus Features – $10.6M
4. Hitman: Agent 47 – 20th Century Fox – $8.2M
5. Man From U.N.C.L.E. – Warner Bros. – $7.4M
6. American Ultra – Lionsgate – $5.5M

10. Fantastic Four – 20th Century Fox – $3.6M
11. Vacation – Warner Bros. – $3.1M
12. Ricki And The Flash – Sony – $3.0M

From AP:

Of the weekend’s new releases, the low-budget horror sequel “Sinister 2” fared best, opening with an estimated $10.6 million for the Blumhouse production — well below the $18 million the 2012 original debuted with. The result was good enough for third place, behind Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation,” which made $11.7 million in its fourth weekend of release.

Fox’s assassin thriller “Hitman: Agent 47,” the second attempt in eight years to adapt the popular video game, disappointed with $8.2 million. It will hope to do better abroad, where the 2007 original made $60.3 million. It began with $8.5 million over the weekend internationally.

Lionsgate’s stoner action-comedy “American Ultra,” starring Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg, also failed to spark much interest, opening with $5.5 million.

The three new releases — all violent, R-rated, poorly reviewed options — divided up a similar audience. The box office was down 7.5 percent from the same weekend last year, according to box-office data firm Rentrak.

Overseas, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION and TERMINATOR: GENISYS are doing well with audiences.

Rentrak’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented, “Tom Cruise and Arnold Schwarzenegger lead a star powered global weekend with a Paramount Pictures one-two punch as ‘Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation’ keeps moving toward the $500 million worldwide mark and ‘Terminator: Genisys’ takes the number one spot internationally as it opened in China this Sunday with a staggering $27.4 million at 25,000 locations.”

The top 12 worldwide weekend box office estimates below.

1. Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation – Paramount Pictures – $36.9M

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt, facing his most blisteringly impossible mission yet, in director Christopher McQuarrie’s MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION.

The deep-cover espionage agency known as the IMF has been under fire, but now it faces total disbandment, even as the most harrowing threat yet known to the free world lies in the shadows. That threat is The Syndicate, an impenetrable, exquisitely-trained group of renegade spies who have left behind their countries for an agenda all their own – an agenda intent on destabilizing the very foundations of civilization. The Syndicate has long been rumored to be just a wild-eyed myth among spies. But Ethan Hunt has just uncovered the unwelcome reality that this rogue nation is not only real but a ticking time bomb about to detonate worldwide if he doesn’t act. The CIA doesn’t buy it. His own team is under threat. Yet, Ethan will never turn his back on the highest stakes.

Every quality that has made Hunt indispensable is tested at once as he faces the ultimate nemesis: his ability to move deliberately in heart-stopping circumstances, his finesse travelling glamorous global locales, his desire to see evil punished and good prevail. From Vienna to Casablanca, from the skin of an in-flight military aircraft to the underwater depths, Hunt will go to every extreme to counter the greatest danger he’s faced in a career built on it. But most of all, he will attempt to do the one thing he has found truly matters: maintain his loyalty to his friends and the idea that might be able to outsmart the impossible.

Reteaming with Cruise as Hunt’s fellow agents are Jeremy Renner as William Brandt; Simon Pegg as whiz-kid Benji; and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell. Joining the action anew are Swedish actress Rebecca Ferguson (“Hercules”) as the mysterious Ilsa Faust; Sean Harris (“Prometheus”) as Solomon Lane and three-time Golden Globe winner Alec Baldwin as CIA Director Alan Hunley.

The film is rated PG 13

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION – The Review

mission-impossible-rogue-nation-review-roundup

Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible franchise is like a series of demo reels for top directors (Brian DePalma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams, Brad Bird) to take turns showing off all the assorted ways they can film their star (and producer) running, fighting, shooting, driving, looking cool, and performing eye-popping physical feats. There’s not much continuity connecting the MI films, and it seems no big film series has ever had a leading character quite as scantily-developed as Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION is the fifth film in this series and I still don’t know much about him. But it doesn’t matter. Director Christopher McQuarrie takes the reigns for the newest installment and while it may not add up to much more than the sum of its parts, those parts include an exotic trip around the world, an engaging script, funny dialogue and spectacular stunts for one exhilarating summer ride.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION opens with the CIA brass Hunsley (Alec Baldwin) shutting down the Impossible Mission Force just as they were closing in on a diabolical terror cell known as The Syndicate led by Solomon Lane (Sean Harris). Ethan (Cruise) goes underground for a few months before calling out teammate Benji (Simon Pegg) to help try and foil a political assassination in Vienna. With the CIA believing that Ethan was behind the attempt, Brandt (Jeremy Renner) enlists the questionably loyal Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) to help track him down, leading to a showdown with Lane. The plot is secondary for what makes MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION so special is Cruise and McQuarrie’s giddy knack for momentum, spinning Ethan and his crew from one ridiculously dangerous situation to another. Watch Tom’s car flip end over end a dozen times before he crawls out and hops on a motorcycle to continue the chase and applaud the age-defying 53-year old actor. The 007-style opening with Cruise hanging on to the door of an ascending transport plane is a five-star experience and represents everything you want from an action film. The show-stopping assassination sequence at an Opera House contains wonderful Buster Keaton-style choreography involving curtains, catwalks, and a lethal flute, and there’s another complex scene where Ethan must hold his breath for several minutes longer than expected while trying to seize a crucial computer chip from an underwater source.

Cruise is in enthusiastic form as usual, throwing himself into his stunt work with near-suicidal bravado. Pegg, Renner, and Ving Rhames provide levity, Alec Baldwin fits right in, and Rebecca Ferguson is a sexy and worthy leading lady. But Cruise is the straight man foundation of the series and takes every action beat in stride – always moving, running, and thinking – he’s terrific. The mission itself may be a bit underwhelming and the central villain something of a dud (Sean Harris’ most distinguishing feature is his weak chin), but MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION is an adrenaline-rush adventure on a grand scale and is highly recommended.

MI5_Rated Payoff 1-Sht

The fifth installment of the “Mission: Impossible” series redefines the term impossible and WAMG has your passes to Paramount Pictures’ MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION.

It’s something the film franchise has been doing since its box-office busting start two decades ago:  with each new film, the team led by dedicated star and producer Tom Cruise has uncovered ways to match, then exceed, audience expectations, each time in different ways. Having begun as a cult phenomenon on 1960s television, “Mission: Impossible” has become a 21st Century cultural phenomenon – a filmmaking event that consistently pushes that border where the classic drama of spy-versus-spy intrigue meets creative action sequences that have become legendary.
