Crispin Glover Stars in SMILEY FACE KILLERS – On Blu-ray and DVD December 8th

From novelist Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho) and director Tim Hunter (River’s Edge) comes the terrifying thriller Smiley Face Killers, slashing its way onto Digital and On Demand, and available to own on Blu-ray™ and DVD December 8 from Lionsgate.

Inspired by true events and the twisted “smiley face killers” conspiracy theory that has gripped the American imagination for decades, this pulse-pounding serial killer tale reunites acclaimed director Hunter with his River’s Edge star Crispin Glover (Alice in Wonderland), and also stars Ronen Rubinstein (Fox’s “9-1-1: Lone Star”) and Mia Serafino (NBC’s “Crowded”). Check out the trailer:

As a strange wave of mysterious drownings of male college students plagues the California coast, Jake Graham (Rubinstein) struggles to keep his life together at school. Finding himself stalked by a hooded figure (Glover) driving an unmarked van, Jake fears he may become the next victim in the killers’ horrific spree.

“Jason’s body has disappeared from the morgue!”

FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER screens Midnights this weekend (May 13th and 14th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108) as part of  Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhousefilm series.

FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER (1984), the fourth film in the venerable franchise, is considered by hard-core fans of the series to be the best, although it was hardly the “final Chapter” (there were at least 10 more). Directed by Joseph Zito (THE PROWLER) directed, which is indeed far above average by slasher standards and features a good cast of recognizable 80’s brat pack wannabes, including Crispin Glover (BACK TO THE FUTURE), Corey Feldman (THE GOONIES), Lawrence Monoson (LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN) and Judie Aronson (WEIRD SCIENCE). It also ranks as one of the goriest in the series, thanks to the return of makeup effects legend Tom Savini, who provided the effects for the first film.

The story doesn’t deviate at all from the F13 formula: a group of horny teens travel to Crystal Lake for a vacation, not knowing of course that Jason has awakened and escaped from the morgue. Little Tommy Jarvis (Feldman), a special effects nut, and his older sister (Kimberly Beck) are intrigued by the newcomers, and get to watch as they go skinny dipping (no shortage of sex and in this one). Meanwhile, the brother of one of Jason’s former victims is out looking to put Jason in the grave once and for all, wandering around in the woods armed with a machete and a shotgun. Jason proceeds to mutilate the bunch in some pretty brutal ways (a boy’s head is crushed against a wall, another gets a corkscrew in the hand and a meat cleaver in the face, a girl is thrown out a window and smashes onto the roof of a car, a guy gets harpooned in the crotch–ouch!), until his final showdown with Tommy, who dresses up like Jason as a kid and confuses him long enough for sis to whack his mask off, revealing his grotesque face. When he goes after her, little Tommy grabs a machete and slams it into Jason’s head, nearly decapitating him when he falls causing the blade to slide further in. Quite an impressive and disgusting special effects feat.

Later, at the hospital, Tommy has a demented look in his eye–leaving the door open for yet another entry despite the title. Enjoyable performances, competent direction, squishy gore effects, and a fast pace make FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER a must see .And you’ll have the opportunity this weekend, which is of course Friday the 13th of May (and Saturday the 14th – Hey! Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to show SATURDAY THE 14th with Richard Benjamin on Saturday?) It’s this month’s Late Night Grindhouse midnight show presented by the madmen at Destroy The Brain! All the gory fun takes place at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108) this weekend. See ya there……unless you’re chicken!

Bill Paxton To Star in History Channel’s Event Series TEXAS RISING

bill paxton

Actor Bill Paxton is heading from the McCoy family patriarch of Kentucky to starring in The History Channel’s eight-hour television event series TEXAS RISING. Premiering Memorial Day 2015, the series will detail the Texas Revolution and the rise of the legendary Texas Rangers.

Paxton received Emmy and Screen Actors Guild nominations for playing “Randall McCoy” in The History Channel’s mega successful HATFIELDS & MCCOYS. The mini-series won five Emmy Awards.

Two-time Oscar-nominated director Roland Joffé (THE KILLING FIELDS, THE MISSION) is directing with an all-star cast which includes Paxton, Brendan Fraser, Ray Liotta, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Olivier Martinez, Thomas Jane, Crispin Glover, Rhys Coiro, Jeremy Davies, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Christopher McDonald, Max Thieriot, Chad Michael Murray, Robert Knepper, Jeff Fahey, Rob Morrow and Kris Kristofferson.

In 1836, west of the Mississippi was considered the Wild West and the Texas frontier was viewed as hell on earth. Crushed from the outside by Mexican armadas and attacked from within by ferocious Comanche tribes – no one was safe. But this was a time of bravery, a time to die for what you believed in and a time to stand tall against the cruel rule of the Mexican General Santa Anna. The heroic General Sam Houston, the rag tag Rangers and the legendary “Yellow Rose of Texas,” lead this story of the human will to win against insurmountable odds. At the end, the Texas flags stood tall and victorious, claiming a piece of history for all eternity.

TEXAS RISING is produced by A+E Studios and ITV Studios America in association with Thinkfactory Media for HISTORY. Leslie Greif (HATFIELDS & MCCOYS) is executive producer.

Exciting ALICE IN WONDERLAND Trailers Drop

alice in wonderland header

The first trailer for Tim Burton’s latest adaptation of ALICE IN WONDERLAND did very little for me.  It looked like a colorful but jumbled mess, a la CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.

The newest US trailer, courtesy of Coming Soon, looks to be much more on the exciting end of the spectrum, and gives us a much better understanding of the story that is to unfold.  Needless to say, I’m not entirely sold on Johnny Depp in this part, but I love how much time Crispen Glover gets in this trailer.  Still not loving how much they are selling the 3-D experience on this film, but we’ll see how that, ultimately, turns out.

Check out the trailer right here:

You can also check out the trailer in HD right here.

Also, AICN has uncovered the new UK trailer for the film, which features an extended opening showing what brings Alice back to Wonderland.

Check it out right here:

ALICE IN WONDERLAND is set for release on March 5th, 2010.

New ‘Alice in Wonderland’ Concept Art and Still

alice-wonderland

Tim Burton’s next film is the 3D adaptation of ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ and, up until now, we haven’t seen a whole lot from it.   Today, we bring you these samples of concept art courtesy of Russian film site Filmz.ru.   We also present to you a still from the film that we haven’t noticed until now.

Check these out:

These pieces of art, while not as Burton-esque as you might expect, are, nonetheless, stunning to look at.   Can’t wait to see some of the vibrant, final shots from the film.

The film stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Michael Sheen, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Crispin Glover, and Christopher Lee.     ‘Alice in Wonderland’ comes out on IMAX and in standard theaters on March 5th, 2010.

MUST SEE Trailer for ‘9’ … I got Chills!

9movie

If there’s only one animated movie I see in 2009, it will hands down be this one. ‘9’ looks to be an absolutely incredible experience. I saw the trailer last night in front of ‘Coraline’ in 3D and it literally gave me chills! I can’t remember the last trailer that gave me chills. The trailer is so cool I just had to watch it two more times while I was writing this post. Don’t believe me… what for yourself and then decide.

Crispin Glover in ‘Wonderland’

In the “perfect casting choice of the week”, Crispin Glover has signed on to appear in Tim Burton’s reimagining of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Â  Glover will play the Knave of Hearts, who is put on trial by the Queen of Hearts for stealing her tarts. Â  I guess they needed a rhyme for “hearts”.

The Knave of Hearts is defended in the story by Alice once the evidence against him grows increasingly absurd.

This is looking to be the perfectly cast film, as Johnny Depp has already signed on as the Mad Hatter. Â  Other casting includes Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Michael Sheen as the Cheshire Cat, and Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar. Â  Newcomer Mia Wasikowska is playing Alice.

The film is due for release on March 19, 2010.
