Synopsis:

THE FIGHTER is the inspirational, true story of these two brothers who, against all the odds, come together to train for a historic title bout that will unite their fractured family, redeem their pasts and, at last, give their hard-luck town what it’s been waiting for: pride. The story unfolds on the gritty, blue-collar streets of Lowell, Mass, where Dicky was once known as “The Pride of Lowell” having gone the distance with the world champion Sugar Ray Leonard. However, after losing that fight, like the town of Lowell, Dicky’s fallen on hard times. His boxing days are behind him and his life has become shattered by drug abuse. Younger brother Micky, meanwhile, has become the family’s fighter and fading hope for a champion. But despite all of his work, Micky’s career is failing and he loses fight after punishing fight. Dicky and Micky’s tougher-than-nails mother, Alice (MELISSA LEO), manages his career and Dicky serves as his highly unreliable trainer. When Micky’s latest fight nearly kills him, it looks like it could all be over – until his iron-willed new girlfriend, Charlene (AMY ADAMS), convinces him to do the unthinkable: split with his family, pursue his own interests and train without his increasingly volatile and criminal brother. Now Micky has the chance of a lifetime as he earns a shot at the World Championship. But when his brother and dysfunctional family reenter his life, they must all reconcile their pasts and become more than just a family in name. With Micky and Dicky reunited, this becomes more than just a fight – it’s an all-out comeback for these brothers, their family, and their city. When it’s over, Micky will have become a World Champion, a Hall of Fame legend, and the new “Pride of Lowell”. THE FIGHTER is a moving and often humorous drama about fighting for the people you love.

From Paramount Pictures, THE FIGHTER will be in theaters December 2010. Visit the film’s official site here or on Facebook here.

New Poster and Trailer for THE FIGHTER

Twitter was all aflutter on Sunday evening when the new, moody trailer for THE FIGHTER showed up during a commercial break for AMC’s season finale of MAD MEN at the 20 min. mark. Pete Hammond over at Deadline.com reported:

This promotional gambit was first tried by Paramount on last season’s Mad Men finale for their major 2009 contender, Up In The Air. That’s because Mad Men is a hot TV ticket, and usually an Emmy contender in its own right, and sure to draw a large contingent of movie awards voters. In fact, one of Mad Men’s consultants has been Frank Pierson, former President of the Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences.

The official reason for the spot, according to a Par spokesperson, is that the audience for the show is “high end, smart, savvy – the ultimate tastemakers“ and we think the show is an ideal place to showcase a special piece on the film.”

Here’s the original.

The Fabulous FIGHTER Trailer Starring Mark Wahlberg & Christian Bale Is Here!

Coming this December, here’s the first trailer for David O. Russell’s THE FIGHTER starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Melissa Leo.

Count on multiple Academy Awards nominations on this film. This “Based on a true story” is exactly the kind of film that Oscar wins are made of. ROCKY…CHARIOTS OF FIRE…anyone? I’d have no problem seeing that statue in the hands of Wahlberg, Bale or even Russell on February 27, 2011.

Synopsis:

THE FIGHTER is a drama about boxer “Irish” Micky Ward’s unlikely road to the world light welterweight title. His Rocky-like rise was shepherded by half-brother Dicky, a boxer-turned-trainer who rebounded in life after nearly being KO’d by drugs and crime and Ward’s eventual world championship in London.

From Paramount Pictures, THE FIGHTER will be in theaters December 2010.

Wahlberg In The Ring For THE FIGHTER

The New York Times had an interesting story on David O. Russell’s THE FIGHTER starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Melissa Leo. Many oscar pundits see the film receiving more than a few nominations with its mid-December 2010 release.

During the St. Louis premiere of THE OTHER GUYS earlier this month, Wahlberg briefly talked to WAMG’s Melissa Howland about his upcoming film.

Here are excerpts from the NYT article:

THE FIGHTER has those elements, plus Christian Bale, and the extraordinary passion of Mark Wahlberg, who started training almost four years ago for the lead role as the real-life boxer Micky Ward.

But the movie still had to survive a grueling behind-the-scenes struggle before landing on the schedule at Paramount Pictures, which plans to release it on Dec. 10, as the awards season hits full stride.

Wahlberg fought hard to get THE FIGHTER made. “Many times I thought it wasn’t going to happen,” said Mr. Wahlberg, who spoke by telephone last week.

Mr. Wahlberg, who spent several years waking before dawn to work on his physical conditioning, recalled thinking, “If I don’t get this movie done the way I want to, I’m going to use this training on somebody in a bad way.”

Rob Moore, Paramount’s vice chairman, acknowledged that his studio had been wary of THE FIGHTER, which promises to become Mr. Russell’s first major release since his I HEART HUCKABEES fizzled for Fox Searchlight Pictures in 2004.

THE FIGHTER is a biopic that follows the ups and downs of a come-from-behind welterweight and his half-brother, and like a lot of adult-oriented dramas, “ultimately, these are tougher movies,” Mr. Moore said. “They’re all about execution.”

Mr. Wahlberg noted, struggle is nothing new when it comes to the story of Mr. Ward and Dick Ecklund, both of whom were written off more than once before Mr. Ward’s triumph, in 2000, in a junior welterweight title fight that figures in the film. “These are guys who against all odds achieved their goals and realized their dream,” Mr. Wahlberg said. “It wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Have a look at a few scenes from the set of THE FIGHTER due in theaters on December 10, 2010. It will be a packed weekend at the theaters with the release of THE FIGHTER, the Johnny Depp/Angelina Jolie thriller THE TOURIST, and the third installment in the Chronicles of Narnia series, THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER.

BATMAN 3 Into Theaters On July 20, 2012

On Friday, news of a release date for BATMAN 3 came from Box Office Mojo:

In one of the most anticipated announcements in recent memory, Warner Bros. officially set a date for the follow-up to The Dark Knight. Tentatively known as BATMAN 3, the movie will debut July 20, 2012 in conventional and IMAX theaters, almost exactly four years after THE DARK KNIGHT opened to record-breaking numbers.

At this time, there are no details available regarding the plot or the cast, though it is assumed that Christian Bale at least will be reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Warner Bros. was also unable to confirm whether or not BATMAN BEGINS and DARK KNIGHT writer-director Christopher Nolan would be taking on those responsibilities again for part three.

The SPIDER-MAN reboot, set to debut on July 3, 2012, is the only other release currently scheduled for July 2012. Other high-profile movies scheduled for Summer 2012 are THE AVENGERS (May 4), MADAGASCAR 3 (May 18), BATTLESHIP (May 25), Disney/Pixar’s BRAVE (June 15) and the Untitled STAR TREK Sequel (June 29).

Not only is Nolan prepping BATMAN 3, but as Nikki Finke and Mike Fleming over at Deadline.com reported back in early February, he’s also being brought on board to save the SUPERMAN franchise.

…the brains behind rebooted Batman has been asked to play a “godfather” role and ensure The Man Of Steel gets off the ground after a 3 1/2-year hiatus… Let us emphasize that Superman 3.0 is in the early stages of development. And we doubt Nolan would direct. This wouldn’t be a sequel to Superman Returns but a completely fresh franchise.

Amen! What Bryan Singer did with SUPERMAN RETURNS was an utter travesty. Being the saviour of Warner Bros. two biggest franchises, Christopher Nolan looks to be one busy filmmaker over the next few years.

Nolan’s next project, the sci-fi action film, INCEPTION, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, will be in theaters on July 16, 2010.

Terrence Malick Becoming a Workaholic?

Two movies within five years of each other?   You bet your ass, Terrence Malick is becoming a workaholic.   Not only that, he’s re-teaming with his THE NEW WORLD co-lead, Christian Bale.   At least, that is what Nikki Finke is reporting over at Deadline Hollywood.   According to her report, Malick, who isn’t one to jump onto a project without much thought, is prepping a love story and that he has already brought on Bale, Javier Bardem, Olga Kurylenko, and Rachel McAdams to star.

There isn’t much else to report on from her article other than shooting is set to begin in the Fall and FilmNation Entertainment has already stepped up for international distribution.   Regardless of the plot, though, you know the film is going to be methodically pieced together just as every, other Malick project has before it.   If Terrence Malick deserves credit for anything, it’s for taking his time with this projects and putting out the absolute best film he can.

Malick’s next film, TREE OF LIFE, starring Sean Penn and Brad Pitt is set to bow at Cannes this year.

Review: ‘Public Enemies’

publicenemiesdepp

What is it about the rebellious figures that we find so endearing? Why are we so much more fascinated by those who break the laws, bend the rules and live dangerously? It has to have something to do with living vicariously through them. These people who have done things most of us would never dream of doing, but still a part of us is intrigued by the thought of what that life would be like. When movies are made about these people, we’re drawn to them and we embrace them with open arms despite the things they’ve done. Why is that?

‘Public Enemies’ is the newest film from director Michael Mann and it illustrates this very point. The story is that of legendary bank robber John Dillinger, played by Johnny Depp. Dillinger’s infamous career as a bank robber took place during the height of the Great Depression. This would seem odd on the surface, but what resulted was an overwhelming public reaction to his celebrity as one of the most successful and difficult to catch criminals of his time. Many people hated him for what he did, but many more seemed intrigued by his adventures. It also didn’t hurt that he only stole from banks and refused to take what little hard-earned money the common people had during these hard times.

During Dillinger’s reign in the film, he saw friends and colleagues die throughout the story, but he prevailed. Aside from his drive to live and succeed, Dillinger met a young woman of low status named Billie Frechette, played by Marion Cotillard. Bille captures Dillinger’s heart and becomes his reason for living and the muse to his craft. Dillinger, a man of his word, vowed to take care of Billie and to never let anything happen to her. Dillinger manages to break his own rule by letting a woman into his life.

Johnny Depp is excellent as Dillinger, but what is even more pleasing about the film’s cast is that no one performance in particular stands out over any other. Michael Mann has managed to garner excellent performances across the board, maintaining a level and consistent cinematic experience that doesn’t overly favor it’s stars. Christian Bale plays FBI Special Agent Melvin Purvis, a man determined to track down Dillinger and prove that he cannot be outsmarted by a criminal. Purvis becomes conflicted however, as he is truly a good man forced to the brink of evil in his pursuit by the new FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, played with an icy, uncomfortable stature by Billy Crudup.

In the past, I haven’t been the biggest fan of Marion Cotillard, but she managed to surprise me in ‘Public Enemies’ as Dillinger’s love interest. She has an adorably cute and pathetic aura to her performance and yet maintains our belief that this innocent, once insignificant woman could develop the courage and resilience that she finds is her price for loving Dillinger. Even the supporting roles are great. Rounding out the cast are quality actors including Stephen Dorff, Channing Tatum as Pretty Boy Floyd and Giovanni Ribisi, to name a few. I personally found that Stephen Graham was especially convincing and entertaining as the reckless and violent Baby Face Nelson.

Director of Photography Dante Spinotti delivers a pleasing feast for the eyes that astonishes without stealing the screen from the story. Spinotti has done some incredible work including ‘L.A. Confidential’ but his best work has always been in collaboration with Michael Mann. ‘Public Enemies’ is now the fifth feature film that Spinotti and Mann have teamed on including Last of the Mohicans, Heat and The Insider. While there is a slight awkwardness at first in getting used to the film being shot in digital high definition while intentionally conveying a visual tone based in the 1930’s this feeling quickly passes and the effect transports the viewer back 75 years.

The 140-minute film is one that starts off slow and easy and gradually pulls the viewer into it’s excitement. The film isn’t an action laden hail of bullets, but it does deliver when the violence is necessary. There is one scene in particular when Purvis and his men shoot it out at Dillinger’s Wisconsin hideout that is especially brilliant for it’s action and intensity. Some interesting similarities can be made to ‘Public Enemies’ in relation to ‘Heat’ such as in both films the two main characters, the opposing forces in this case being Dillinger and Purvis, actually only have two major scenes together, one of which being at the end. This was the case for Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in ‘Heat’ as well.

Music in the movies isn’t always easy, so when I feel it works it usually really works well. This is the case with ‘Public Enemies’ and is why I’ve addressed this last, as it has become one of my favorite ingredients to this delectable recipe I have greatly enjoyed. Elliot Goldenthal (Across the Universe, Titus) has provided a marvelous score, but the soundtrack also features many great samples of music from the era as well, including songs from Billie Holiday, Otis Taylor, Willie Johnson and even contemporary jazz singer/pianist Diana Krall, who also appears in a cameo as a jazz singer.

Finally, ‘Public Enemies’ just has one Hell of a script. There’s so much great dialogue in the film that works flawlessly, blended into the time and place without sticking out like a sore thumb. The film has several great lines, most of them naturally uttered by Dillinger, but the most poignant lines of dialogue come from Clark Gable who starred in the old gangster flick ‘Manhattan Melodrama’ which is the movie Dillinger is seeing near the end of ‘Public Enemies’. This is also one of the best scenes delivered by Depp and he has no lines at all. It’s the connection Dillinger makes to what Gable’s character on screen is talking about that puts everything in it’s place. Depp’s acting is this scene all in his face, without words, and it’s a wonderful sight.

For those out there that still have figured out that ‘Heat’ is a modern masterpiece, I beg you to reconsider re-watching the film and then try your luck with ‘Public Enemies’ because the rest of us are falling madly in love with Michael Mann. ‘Public Enemies’ is movie that will make a huge splash come Oscar season and is going to garner a ton of nominations, hopefully leading to some wins.

Discuss: What Will Do Better This Weekend, ‘Night at the Museum 2’ or ‘Terminator Salvation’?

museum-vs-terminator

Which is gonna win out?   Ben Stiller, Amerlia Earhart, and Teddy Roosevelt, or a whole bunch of T-600s and a wrathful Christian Bale?   On the surface, it seems like a pretty done deal.   ‘Terminator’ could surely kick ‘Museum’s ass, right?   Don’t be quick to decide on that one.

‘Terminator 3’ opened with just over $44 million when it was released on July 2nd, 2003.   That was 4th of July weekend, too.   When the first ‘Night at the Museum’ was released on the weekend before Christmas, 2006, it made just over $30 million.   Transport both of these franchises over to the end of May, and you can shave a little off ‘Terminator’s take and add it onto ‘Museum’s.

Of course, we already have some numbers in.   ‘Terminator Salvation’ was, actually, released yesterday, May 21st, and it took in $13.3 million on over 35oo screen.   ‘Museum’ opens today, the 22nd, on over 4000 screens, and that’s including a few hundred on IMAX.

Now, if you take into account the star power each film has, then you have a whole, different ballgame.   Christian Bale’s last movie, which I’m sure you saw four or five times, was ‘The Dark Knight,’ which opened to $158 million.   Stiller’s last movie was ‘Madagascar 2,’ which opened with $63 million.   These are two massive openings, neither of which, I’m sure, ‘Terminator’ nor ‘Museum’ will even come close to touching.   You can’t really attribute ‘The Dark Knight’s success to Bale, and you really can’t give Stiller much credit for the success of ‘Madagascar.’   However, if you are calculating star power, those were the figures for each of these actor’s last films.

Whichever film comes out on top, whether it be ‘Terminator Salvation’ or ‘Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,’ this is sure to be a huge weekend for movies.   You still have ‘Star Trek’ moving strong, and ‘Angels & Demons’ probably won’t drop off all that much.     This all goes without even mentioning the new release of ‘Dance Flick,’ which, on 2400 screen should be able to make change somewhere in the low $20 millions.

Drop us a comment below.   What do you think will come out on top this weekend?   Which of these films are you more looking forward to?   Will you be seeing ‘Night at the Museum 2’ on the IMAX?

Here is the way I see the weekend breaking down:

  • ‘Terminator Salvation’ – $71 million
  • ‘Night at the Museum 2’ – $62 million
  • ‘Star Trek’ -$27 million
  • ‘Dance Flick’ -$22
  • ‘Angels & Demons’ – $21

Give out your numbers in the comment section below.

Review: ‘Terminator Salvation’

terminatorsalvation1

The fourth film in the ‘Terminator’ franchise, it’s savior it is not. Directed by the yet to prove himself McG (Charlie’s Angels 1 & 2) with a budget that would make any relatively green filmmaker swoon at the opportunity, has managed to make a technically high-end piece of action with a particularly low-end story. ‘Terminator Salvation’ makes an effort to bring all the pieces of the time-bending story together and tie up loose ends but fails.

As the title suggests, the character of John Connor (Christian Bale) is seen by most humans as the prophecised “savior” of mankind. Connor, in this chapter, is attempting to locate and rescue his father Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) in order to preserve his own fate and that of human-kind. If his father dies, who is currently a teenager, then the first ‘Terminator’ movie would never happen and John Connor would have never been born.

Sam Worthington (Rogue) plays Marcus Wright, a man about to be executed on Death Row for crimes he fully admits to and demands punishment for. Wright is a man with a conscience about the wrongs he has committed and sees no redemption for himself. As the poisons of lethal injection stream into his body and his life slips away from him, we are thrown into the future year 2018 amidst the chaotic and horrifying aftermath of a human apocalypse brought on by machines.

Marcus Wright ends up being the focal point of this story. After a mission led by Connor goes terribly bad, leaving only Connor alive, Wright emerges from the smoldering wreckage unharmed and completely confused about where he is and what has happened. I’ll refrain from directly giving away any spoilers, but to be honest… even if you haven’t already figured out the truth about Marcus Wright going into the movie you’ll have it 95% figured out within the first quarter of the film. McG’s attempt to maintain the mystery of Wright’s existence and importance to the story is ruined early on and the remaining 5% is highly predictable.

‘Terminator Salvation’ gets itself a bit confused as Wright could easily be mistaken for the “savior” figure in this story over John Connor, if not for the already establishedback-story from the trilogy. Much of the plot elements in this movie are sort of casually borrowed from previous films and the final battle scene feels similar in some ways to that of ‘Terminator 2’. If not for the action in this movie, I fear I may have found myself bored due to a relative lack of originality.

With the failures aside, the one thing that ‘Terminator Salvation’ does have going for it are the special effects. Marcus Wright… (fine, technically this is a mini-spoiler) …is handled with a certain minimally intrusive but highly effective approach that works well. We get to see a handful of different terminator models pop up throughout the movie, but the best parts are the extensive Hunter/Killer Terminator scenes and the Terminator-Motorcycles, which are featured in one heck of an awesome chase scene. Personally, I found the Hydrobots to be part cheesy and part Matrix-esque, but I suppose they do fit the bill as used in the story.

As for the acting, everyone did a decent job, but no one really stood out, including Christian Bale. I can’t help but wonder how the actor/director relationship between Bale and McG went… we know how the actor/DP (director of photography) relationship went, don’t we? Helena Bonham Carter’s rather short role in the movie felt somewhat out of place simply by the fact that Carter stood out as an actress from the rest of the cast. The Tim Burton regular seemed to stick out like a sore thumb. Yelchin was surprisingly convincing as the young Kyle Reese and Sam Worthington performed on a level equal to Bale’s.

In the end, the story isn’t over. What? I’m not giving anything away! As much as this franchise jumps around in time and changes itself up with each movie, who the Hell knows where the story is supposed to actually end? Did you really think they would apply an ending making it impossible to continue the franchise? Not only is this another way in which the film fails to tie up loose ends, but it ventures to give birth to the question of when is enough… enough? Ultimately, what I took away was that the franchise is dead and needs to end and ‘Terminator Salvation’ was questionably even necessary. In my mind, the franchise is as stands…

#1 ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’
#2 ‘The Terminator’
#3 ‘Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines’
and, bringing up the rear… #4 ‘Terminator Salvation’

[Overall: 3 stars out of 5]
