WAMG Exclusive: New ‘Mutant Chronicles’ stills

exclusivemc5

We got our hands on some super awesome, super exclusive ‘Mutant Chronicle’ photos.

I got a chance to see an unfinished cut of this just before this year’s New York Comic Con. I really enjoyed it and called it an “awesomely epic b-movie† in my pre-Comic Con coverage. The story was cool, some good special effects and Thomas Jane was awesome as the lead. Overall, it was a solid B-flick. I’m looking forward to seeing the final version very soon. It is currently available on VOD and will be released in theaters on April 24th. I suggest you check it out whichever way you can. And for all you LA readers, I will be posting very soon how you can get tickets to the premiere.

Review: ‘Alien Trespass’

alientrespassghoda

I have never been a big fan of “classic† sci-fi films. As a result I never really watched films like the original Day The Earth Stood Still or War of the Worlds. Instead, when I decided to watch old sci-fi movies, I made sure the name Ed Wood or the words Mystery Science Theater were attached. For some reason, I always preferred the really cheesy B-movies that were so bad they were good. I proudly own a Plan 9 From Outer Space/Robot Monster 2 pack, which was sold as “The Worst Double Feature Ever† DVD set. A few years ago a film called The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra came out, which was an incredibly awesome and very funny spoof of those types of films. When I saw the trailer for Alien Trespass, I thought it looked like another spoof, this time in Wonderfully Astounding Technicolor. I was wrong.

Alien Trespass is not a spoof. It is instead a mimic of the bigger budgeted sci-fi films of the 50’s. The story is not a parody or remake but instead unique or at least as unique as an old-fashioned alien story could be. It uses the same film techniques and the actors utilize the same acting style of the 50’s. In fact, the film takes place in 1957 and the film does little to prove it was not filmed shortly thereafter. Admittedly, I cannot compare the more technical stuff since I never really watched the older films but other than the too good for the era picture quality and the known actors, this film sold me on the idea that it could have been made in the late 50’s/early 60’s. For most films that is an insult but that is a compliment with Alien Trespass since that was always the intention.

Since it is so old-fashioned, most younger viewers today will get bored with it. The film is slow moving and there is not much action. There are also not a lot of jokes given to the audience. What I mean by that is while there are occasionally a few wisecracks made by the characters, most of the humor is meant to come from unintentional sources just like the films of the 50’s. Lines that are so bad they are funny, cheesy effects, and dumb character stereotypes were taken seriously so that they would be considered funny to the modern audience. As a result, R.W. Goodwin intentionally scatters this “unintentional† humor throughout the film. It is an interesting concept and works for the most part, although the movie could have had a lot more of it.

Taking these situations seriously results in some funny jokes but at times the film is too serious. Goodwin said that he hopes the film is fun and also scary at points but I did not find the film scary at all. I don’t think many people will. However, fans of classic sci-fi should love this film because it perfectly captures a long lost style of film. Regardless of my youth, I still found the movie to be very funny at times. The monster looks ridiculous and Eric McCormack has a lot of fun in his given role(s). In fact, all of the actors are pretty god in their roles. The locations, props and everything else look completely authentic.

Overall, I found the movie enjoyable but it could have been much better. Then again, I would have rather seen a spoof of b-movies than an actual attempt at making one. In that regard, the film absolutely succeeds. In the late 50’s this film would have been one of the biggest movies of all time. In fact I would probably be writing a review of the remake right now instead if the film came out then. It is clear this movie was made for nostalgic purposes and any b-movie lovers should go see it. For everyone else, it is a fun little movie but nowhere near as fun as it could have been if the film was a spoof of the genre.

‘Alien Trespass’ [PG] opens today in select cities.

Best of the Bad… ‘Frankenhooker’

Melissa:

“Wanna date?”

Do you like 80’s babes? Science geeks? Watching hookers go crazy for super crack? Then boy do I have a movie for you! (Yes. It was released in 1990 but they are still 80’s babes!).

Directed by Frank Hennenlotter, who gave us the awesomely bad ‘Basket Case’ series, ‘Frankenhooker’ follows the story of Jeffrey Franken (James Lorinz), an electrician/mad scientist/medical student flunky who spends his time conducting odd experiments. The only person who doesn’t find him freakish is his girlfriend Elizabeth Shelley (Patty Mullen), a pretty girl with a bit of a weight problem. When Elizabeth is killed by a freak lawnmower accident, Jeffrey makes it his mission to rebuild her using her leftover head. (Let’s face it, Jeffrey is not exactly a catch! Elizabeth is probably the only woman on the planet to find him remotely attractive!)

One catch though… If Jeffrey’s going to rebuild her, then he’s going to give her the perfect body! Her head is stored in a freezer filled with some sort of preserving formula, only to bring it out for romantic candlelit dinners and meaningful conversations until he devises a plan.

Hmmm… Now where can he find body parts for the perfect woman?

I know! Hookers! Let’s find some really attractive hookers and kill them for their body parts using super crack! Yes, SUPER CRACK! That’s the most logical solution that I can think of!

But wait! There’s more! When Jeffrey finally rebuilds his beloved Elizabeth and brings her back to life in the electrical storm (Wait…Electrical Storm…Franken… Oh! I get it!), she starts turning tricks and acting like the hookers that make up her now hot body! This leaves our beloved Jeffrey to find her as she runs the streets of New York, turning tricks and taking lives. That’s some woman!

Sure the movie lacks things like an intricate story line, big names, and witty banter, but it doesn’t really matter. Sometimes you just want to see someone killed by some good ol’ spontaneous combustion from super crack!

The first time I saw this movie my face hurt from laughter! It’s completely ridiculous! So if you’re looking for a cheesy horror film that’ll leave you rolling on the floor, check this one out!

Review: ‘Black Sheep’

Recently I rented the movie Black Sheep.

This is where you say, “Oh, the one with Chris Farley? Yeah, I’ve seen that, it’s a classic!”

And I say, “Nooo, This is a movie that was made in New Zealand about man-eating sheep. IT’S AWESOME!”

At least that is the interaction I have had with every person that I have spoken to about this particular movie. But it really is AWESOME! Imagine, the beautiful New Zealand countryside full of fat contented sheep. But on one particular farm there is illegal genetic engineering going on that, once it gets out of hand, causes 50,000 sheep to run-a-muck tearing innocent people limb from limb because of their sudden and insatiable appetite for human flesh. The heroes of this movie are a an attractive pair (of course). One is a young man with a preexisting sheep phobia and the other a young female animal rights activist named Experience.

The movie, with it’s wonderfully over the top gore is played out completely straight faced while still embracing how ridiculous it’s story is. If you enjoyed Dawn of The Dead or Slither, you will enjoy this flick as well.

Best of the Bad … ‘Return of the Living Dead’

‘Return of the Living Dead’

Return of the Living Dead (1985) is an example of a bad movie that’s not really all that bad … just intentionally cheesy. Dan O’Bannon directed this sequel-parody to the classic Night of the Living Dead, but here’s an interesting note on O’Bannon … this is one of only two films he’s directed. O’Bannon is actually a writer whose resume includes Lifeforce (1985), Invaders from Mars (1986), Total Recall (1990), Screamers (1995) and various writing work on all four Alien films as well as Alien vs. Predator and AVP-Requiem.
