“More Brains!” RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

“Send more cops!”

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD screens this Friday and Saturday nights (July 5th and 6th) at The Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ Midnight Series. A Facebook invite for the screening can be found HERE

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (1984) was a spin-off of the Living Dead series that resulted from the sharing of copyright between George Romero and NIGHT FO THE LIVING DEAD co-writer John Russo. While Romero went to continue the narrative with DAWN OF THE DEAD and DAY OF THE DEAD, both bleak social satire/horrors, Russo undertook a humorous and far more chaotic reprise of the original story. Russo wisely teamed with writer/director Dan O’ Bannon (a St. Louis native!), who pulled out all the stops for one gut-buster of an entertaining horror film. From a strip tease in a graveyard by Scream Queen Linnea Quigley to a massive showdown between the zombies and the law, and a way-over-the-top climax, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD is a pinnacle of pitch-black zany humor. There’s nothing funnier than James Karen beating the split dog with a crutch or Clu Gulager uttering hilarious throw away lines, like, “Great, it hurts to be dead” and “We lied those aren’t rabid weasels”. The more I think about it, the funnier it gets.

Unlike Romero’s zombies the ones in RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD move relatively fast and can speak (they use police radios, like a takeout service, to call for more reinforcements). Head shots don’t do them in any more, since even their severed body parts can move and grasp at prey. Thankfully they’re not just good make-up effects, but also have distinct personalities that add tremendously to the film’s fun value. And RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD is a lot of fun, full of good humor and tongue-in-cheek genre touches (like the graveyard being named as ‘Resurrection Cemetry’). Russo, O’Bannon and the cast seemed to have had a great time making it and you’ll have a great time seeing it on the big screen again when RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD plays midnights this weekend at The Tivoli

TRAILER APOCALYPSE – Grindhouse Trailer Reel Plays Midnights This Weekend at The Hi-Pointe

TRAILER APOCALYPSE screens midnights this Friday and Saturday Night (June 5th and 6th) at The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave, St. Louis) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse

To celebrate the fifth year of the monthly Late Night Grindhouse, the crazies over at Destroy the Brain are presenting  ‘TRAILER APOCALYPSE –  A Grindhouse Trailer Reel’ featuring a 2 solid hour buffet of trailers from the so-called “grindhouse” era: the notorious, the long forgotten, and everything in between. If you went to see a double or triple feature playing on 42nd Street in New York City in the seventies these are just the kind of coming attractions that would run before the films. Unfortunately, almost no one currently living in St. Louis ventured into NYC grindhouses 40-something years ago (at least no one I know), so here’s your chance to take that time machine back to the gritty days of exploitation madness.
Andy over at Destroy the Brain is keeping it close to the vest as to exactly what trailers we can expect to see unspool on The Hi-Pointe’s massive screen in glorious 35mm, but I did get him to tease three titles and if these are indicative of the titles on this trailer reel, St. Louis is in for one sleazy treat this weekend.

Herschell Gordon Lewis’ GRUESOME TWOSOME  opens with a bizarre scene of two Styrofoam mannequin heads wearing wigs talking to each other. It’s as terrible as it sounds and it’s one of Lewis’ very worst films (and that’s saying a lot!), but I’m sure that the 2 minute trailer will be a lot of fun.

bloodfreakpic1

BLOOD FREAK (1972) is the one about the hippy who smokes weed, which naturally turns him into a slasher with a giant turkey head. It has to be seen to be believed and is probably the finest example of the pro-Christian / anti-drug / gore / Turkey-headed-monster horror sub genre.

psychofromtexas

PSYCHO FROM TEXAS (1975) is a sweaty, hickploitation trash that features Linnea Quigley in an early role as a stripper who gets a pitcher of beer poured over her.

I guess we’ll have to wait until this weekend to see what other goodies are in store. I can’t wait!

SOUVENIR VOMIT BAGS WILL BE GIVEN TO THE FIRST 45 ATTENDEES EACH NIGHT!

Admission is $7 – Beer & Wine is served until 12:45am

Best of the Bad … ‘Return of the Living Dead’

‘Return of the Living Dead’

Return of the Living Dead (1985) is an example of a bad movie that’s not really all that bad … just intentionally cheesy. Dan O’Bannon directed this sequel-parody to the classic Night of the Living Dead, but here’s an interesting note on O’Bannon … this is one of only two films he’s directed. O’Bannon is actually a writer whose resume includes Lifeforce (1985), Invaders from Mars (1986), Total Recall (1990), Screamers (1995) and various writing work on all four Alien films as well as Alien vs. Predator and AVP-Requiem.
