In THE EXPENDABLES 3, Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team come face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables — but Barney has other plans.
Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

Many men spend their whole lives seeking the perfect woman. In the movies it doesn’t take nearly that long. She can’t be stitched together as with THE BRIDE or using more recent technology as in WEIRD SCIENCE. In the new film RUBY SPARKS, the title character emerges in full flesh and blood after a writer describes her on paper ( well, types her up really ). Sounds a bit like something out of TV’s ” The Twilight Zone”, doesn’t it? As a matter of fact, Keenan Wynn was able to do this via a magic reel to reel dictation machine in the 1960 episode ” A World of His Own..” written by Richard Matheson. But this new film delves much further into this fantasy and grounds it in the reality of modern relationships. And it features two of the most interesting young actors working toward ( they were both producers and she wrote it )! This whimsical little tale is a welcome break from the big, bloated action epics that rule the Summer months.
RUBY SPARKS begins with Calvin ( Paul Dano ) the latest of a long line of cinema’s writer heroes doing battle with the dreaded writers; block ( think a much younger, less twitchy BARTON FINK ). At age 19 he wrote his masterpiece novel and can’t seem to really follow up with anything. A few short stories, a novella, but nothing near that first triumph. His brother Harry ( Chris Messina ) thinks Calvin should get back in the dating scene although he’s still stinging from a break-up with his longest love Lila a few years ago. Calvin spends most days staring at a blank sheet of paper in his 70’s era manual typewriter and taking his cute lil’ pup Scotty out to do his business. At night a lovely red-haired lady named Ruby ( Zoe Kazan ) dominates his dreams. In the longest encounter he meets her while taking Scottie to the park. The next day Calvin tells his therapist Dr. Rosenthal ( Elliott Gould ) about her. The doc suggests that he should try to write a page about her. At home that night Calvin starts churning out pages and pages of prose. The block is broken. A call from his agent awakens him at his desk the next morning. As Calvin’s about to head out to a meeting a voice calls out to him from his kitchen. A lady emerges…it’s Ruby! She acts as though they’ve been sharing the place for quite a while. Is this an illusion? Can others see her? If so, can she be changed by his typing? But why bother, since she just might be the perfect girlfriend.
And that’s not even the half of it, but I don’t wish to spoil the film’s many surprises. As with their previous hit, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, Jonathon Dayton and Valerie Faris have a deft light touch directing film comedies and, like MISS, they get excellent performances from this great cast ( including great work with the often used Los Angeles locations ). Steve Coogan is his usual hilarious self as Calvin’s conniving, pompous, literary rival. Gould brings a lot of warmth to his role as the patient, wise advisor. Messina has a great rapport with Dano. They play off each other like a great classic comedy team ( with Harry the crude regular Joe to Calvin’s intellectual ). A highlight of the film ( featured very predominately in commercials ) is a family get together where we meet the boys’ mother ( Annette Bening ) and her new hubby Mort ( Antonio Banderas ). These screen vets are quite the scene stealers. Bening beams as a true ” Earth mother “, who’s thrilled with Ruby while Banderas charms as the passionate silver Spanish fox. But the film is really carried by the young couple at its center. After seeing him in heavy dramas like THERE WILL BE BLOOD, it was a delight to see Dano’s comic talents. With his smart-guy glasses he reminded me a bit of Cary Grant in BRINGING UP BABY, while other times I thought of Jimmy Stewart’s Elwood P. Dowd in HARVEY ( referenced in the film ) and VERTIGO’s Scotty Ferguson as Calvin tried to mold Ruby into his ideal. The big discovery here is Kazan. Not only did she write a very clever, original script, she as Ruby truly sparkles on-screen particularly in her street argument with Calvin and later as she flirts with him at a loud dance club ( thanks for the subtitles ). She’s hysterical as she is later turned into a clingy nymph by the writer and powerful as she stands up for herself after a disastrous writers’ party. The film takes a dark turn in the last act, but this treats us to another facet of Ruby ( and Kazan’s acting range ). The drama seems a bit out of balance with the fantasy elements, but it doesn’t take away anything from the film’s considerable charm. Like Calvin you too may fall hard for RUBY SPARKS. Let’s hope her creator, Ms. Kazan will find another film to showcase her considerable talents very soon.
On Thursday, Producer-Director Robert Rodriguez (@Rodriguez) tweeted out this first poster for the second film in the Machete trilogy.
I just finished working with @LadyGaga on @MacheteKills , she kicked SO MUCH ASS! Holy Smokes. Blown away!
Lady Gaga also took to Twitter to confirm her part in the movie:
Yes its true, I will be making my debut as an actress ln the amazing MACHETE KILLS BY @RODRIGUEZ IM SO EXCITED!!! AH! Filming was insane.
Gaga + Rodriguez = brilliance. Even more so by releasing all this info on MACHETE KILLS via the 21st century version of a newspaper – social networking.
In late June Rodriguez sent out this photo, “I just cast Charlie Sheen in #machetekills as the President of the United States! Who better?”
In the upcoming film, Machete is mourning the loss of his beloved Sartana, slain during a run in with the cartels. Machete is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a cartel leader, Mendez the Madman, who threatens to fire a missile on the US. Machete foils Mendez’s plot only to find that the missiles are remote wired to and triggered by the madman’s still beating heart. The only man who can disarm the missile is eccentric billionaire arms dealer, Luther Voz, who has hatched a plan of his own to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on Voz and his army in order dismantle his master plan for global anarchy.
Machete made his first appearance in a “fake” trailer in Rodriguez’s 2007 Grindhouse. The first film, Machete, starred Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Jeff Fahey and Robert De Niro, was released in 2009 to strong box office and overwhelming home video success. Rodriguez’s next film, FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR (3D), will be released in 2014.
Starring Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara, Antonio Banderas, Demian Bichir, Alexa Vega, Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen, and Lady Gaga, MACHETE KILLS will be in theaters in 2013.
In DreamWorks Animation’s latest animated outing, we are introduced to the world of PUSS IN BOOTS populated by some eyebrow-raising nursery rhyme characters. A back story to the little wide-eyed cat we met in SHREK 2, the film opens with the newly-orphaned Puss, growing up in the small village of San Ricardo. He later befriends a somewhat twisted and oval shaped guy – Humpty Alexander Dumpty. Puss continually listens to Humpty’s lofty dreams and plans, but at the end of the day, he’s just an egg who’s better at rolling than walking. Ultimately Humpty doesn’t have the means to really accomplish any of his goals. Director Chris Miller shows us an egg who was picked on and a bit of an outsider, and Puss protected him and always stood up for him. Humpty is the dreamer and Puss is helping him realize his dreams.
They both have a simple dream of leaving the orphanage for a better life – all they need is a few magic beans to grow into a beanstalk so they can steal a fabled goose that lays golden eggs from a giant’s castle in the clouds. Easy-peasy. The continual childhood search for the fabled beans turns up nothing, ending the childish dreams and the friendship of the cat and the egg.
It isn’t long before the cat of action finds his true calling, when he selflessly rescues a woman from the path of a charging bull. San Ricardo quickly bestows the title of hero to Puss, which earns him his debonair hat and legendary boots (meant to stand for truth, honor and courage) – thus becoming El Gato con Botas! When Puss agrees to help a jealous Humpty in a plan all in the name of saving their friendship, the two are set on separate paths with quite different goals. Puss becomes a presumed traitor to his village and everyone who trusted him, while Humpty becomes a bad egg, whose childhood dreams turn to thoughts of personal gain and revenge.
After their separation, Humpty comes back into Puss’ life, when he finally finds a way to make their childhood dream of finding the magic beans come true. He’s planned it out, but he needs Puss’ help to execute it. However, it’s also going to be a three man (cat, egg, cat) job and that’s where the greatest thief in all of Old Spain is introduced – Kitty Softpaws.
After Puss finds himself confronted by a masked opponent, he tracks his rival to a “cats only” cantina, intending to challenge the sly feline. The house rules dictate that on Tuesday, fights are restricted to dance challenges, so our hero and the still-masked adversary engage in a free-for-all dance-off, much to the delight of the all cat audience. The scene works due to the clever choreography, which humorously blends everything from flamenco, to Latin ballroom, to contemporary, from Laura Gorenstein Miller, founder, choreographer and artistic director of the Los Angeles-based modern dance troupe, Helios Dance Theater.
Part of the problem with Humpty’s plan to obtain the beans and eventually get rich is that there is someone out there who wants the beans as much as he – in fact, there are two who stand in the way of Humpty’s dream – an ornery pair of husband-and-wife bandits known as Jack and Jill, played with grit and gusto by Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris. As with the general filmmaker blueprint for fairy tale revisionism, this is not your nursery rhyme duo who “went up the hill to fetch a pail of water.” They are big, mean and out for themselves, which naturally makes them perfect for a life of crime.
This amazing fairy tale race to find the confounded golden goose leads them to discover that this goose is a mom with a gosling. The precarious travels lead the trio to realize that “wanting” isn’t always such a pleasing thing as “having,” with Humpty learning the lesson that it’s not too late to change the course of his life – even he deserves a second chance.
The two fanciful scenes that’ll leave you purrin’ are the wagon chase and swirling, growing beanstalk. Production designer Guillaume Aretos’ minute details are rich in depth and scale – it’s lovely to watch these tiny characters wondering at the universe as they rise into the cloudy heavens of the giants. With the advantageous use of 3D, visual effects supervisor Ken Bielenberg is able to capture some energetic moments especially in the stagecoach heist. Puss in Boots, Kitty and Humpty attempt to steal the magic beans right out from under the noses of criminals Jack and Jill…while all are traveling at breakneck speed on a stagecoach. There’s a lot of action in these scenes. Executive producer Guillermo del Toro influences can be felt throughout this colorful, stylized world filled with big symbolic shadowing. It’s the feel of an old spaghetti Western, bordering Sergio Leone, that really suits PUSS IN BOOTS – even down to editor Eric Dapkewicz’s use of the split screens.
The audience could totally believe this strong, adventurous cat in an Indiana Jones, 007, or even (wink) in a Zorro role. Antonio Banderas and Puss have become interchangeable – they’ve become one and the same. You can’t have one without the other. Salma Hayek’s “Kitty Softpaws” is a strong, independent, funny cat – her sultry voice brings many attributes to the “femme fatale” feline. The villainous Humpty Alexander Dumpty is played by Zach Galifianakis with a sly wit and charm – right down to his thinly pursed lips. There’s a lot more depth to his vulnerability beyond the king’s men putting him back together.
Henry Jackman (MONSTERS VS ALIENS) has composed a score scattered with flourishes of classical and flamenco music throughout. A beautiful homage to the genre that reinvigorated the American Western is the end result. Instead of the staid, sobering nursery rhymes, director Chris Miller (SHREK THE THIRD) delivers a magical twist on the fairy tale genre. PUSS IN BOOTS is epically romantic, with a great heart!
4 out of 5 stars
The film is rated “PG” for some adventure action and mild rude humor.
