Discuss: What Will Do Better This Weekend, ‘Night at the Museum 2’ or ‘Terminator Salvation’?

museum-vs-terminator

Which is gonna win out?   Ben Stiller, Amerlia Earhart, and Teddy Roosevelt, or a whole bunch of T-600s and a wrathful Christian Bale?   On the surface, it seems like a pretty done deal.   ‘Terminator’ could surely kick ‘Museum’s ass, right?   Don’t be quick to decide on that one.

‘Terminator 3’ opened with just over $44 million when it was released on July 2nd, 2003.   That was 4th of July weekend, too.   When the first ‘Night at the Museum’ was released on the weekend before Christmas, 2006, it made just over $30 million.   Transport both of these franchises over to the end of May, and you can shave a little off ‘Terminator’s take and add it onto ‘Museum’s.

Of course, we already have some numbers in.   ‘Terminator Salvation’ was, actually, released yesterday, May 21st, and it took in $13.3 million on over 35oo screen.   ‘Museum’ opens today, the 22nd, on over 4000 screens, and that’s including a few hundred on IMAX.

Now, if you take into account the star power each film has, then you have a whole, different ballgame.   Christian Bale’s last movie, which I’m sure you saw four or five times, was ‘The Dark Knight,’ which opened to $158 million.   Stiller’s last movie was ‘Madagascar 2,’ which opened with $63 million.   These are two massive openings, neither of which, I’m sure, ‘Terminator’ nor ‘Museum’ will even come close to touching.   You can’t really attribute ‘The Dark Knight’s success to Bale, and you really can’t give Stiller much credit for the success of ‘Madagascar.’   However, if you are calculating star power, those were the figures for each of these actor’s last films.

Whichever film comes out on top, whether it be ‘Terminator Salvation’ or ‘Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,’ this is sure to be a huge weekend for movies.   You still have ‘Star Trek’ moving strong, and ‘Angels & Demons’ probably won’t drop off all that much.     This all goes without even mentioning the new release of ‘Dance Flick,’ which, on 2400 screen should be able to make change somewhere in the low $20 millions.

Drop us a comment below.   What do you think will come out on top this weekend?   Which of these films are you more looking forward to?   Will you be seeing ‘Night at the Museum 2’ on the IMAX?

Here is the way I see the weekend breaking down:

  • ‘Terminator Salvation’ – $71 million
  • ‘Night at the Museum 2’ – $62 million
  • ‘Star Trek’ -$27 million
  • ‘Dance Flick’ -$22
  • ‘Angels & Demons’ – $21

Give out your numbers in the comment section below.

Columbia prepping for third ‘Da Vinci Code’ Film

angelsdemons

With less than a month away from the release of ‘Angels & Demons,’ the second film featuring the Robert Langdon character, Columbia Pictures is preparing for a third installment in the series.   ‘The Lost Symbol,’ based on Dan Brown’s new Langdon novel, comes out in bookstores on September 15th, and Columbia is not letting the book go without a feature film companion.

The novel is going to have a first printing of five million copies.   The announcement Brown had finished his manuscript for the novel came today by Sonny Mehta, chairman/editor in chief of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group.

“This is a great day for readers and booksellers,† said Mehta.

Here is hoping that ‘The Lost Symbol’ is more ‘Angels & Demons’ than ‘The Da Vinci Code.’   The first story was only decent in book form and came off as boring and overbearing when it was adapted to the screen.   ‘Angels & Demons’ is a much more action-oriented story, and I’m sure it will serve to make a fine feature film.

Two New ‘Angels & Demons’ Posters for Tom Hanks to Grumble At

angels-demons-poster1angels-demons-poster2

Here we have two new posters for the upcoming ‘Angels & Demons.’   The first one is a new domestic poster, while the second is an international one-sheet.   Not sure which one I prefer.   Neither of them really cry out “Watch Me!” and really call to mind the lame poster design for ‘The Da Vinci Code.’

Perhaps Hanks should stand down from appearing in these posters.   He just doesn’t scowl like he should.   The guy was in comedies far too long to come off as imposing.

These posters worked better:

Now those are some pretty effective poster designs.

‘Angels & Demons’ comes out on May 15th.

Post-Oscars Film Footage Here

oscar3

Hope you didn’t turn off the Oscar’s broadcast just as soon as Steven Spielberg pronounced the first “s” in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.   If you did, however, you missed some pretty exciting footage of upcoming movies.   I love that they did this.   I really hope it turns into an annual tradition to reveal first-ever seen footage over the end credits of the Academy Awards.   For those of you who did miss out on this footage, here it is for your viewing pleasure:

‘Public Enemies’ and ‘Amelia’ look excellent.   Can’t wait for ‘Sherlock Holmes’, either.

New ‘Angels & Demons’ Photos Surface

Four new photos have surfaced from the set of Tom Hank’s new film ‘Angels & Demons’. ‘Angels & Demons’Â  is the follow-up to the somewhat successful ‘Da Vinci Code’ and both are based on the best selling novels by Dan Brown.

In the interview given by Brian Grazer in today’s USA Today, Grazer tells of the location problems with shooting a movie set in the Vatican yet not able to be shot there. He also addresses the problems with the first film (staying true to the novel , seemingly long and staged) and hopes to correct them in ‘Angels’.

The photos below show Hanks again as Harvard religious authority, Robert Langdon. There are also photos of Ewan McGregor as a priest (way to go Obi-Wan!).

‘Angels &Demons’ is due to hit theaters on May 15th, 2009.

News from ‘Angels & Demons’ Set …

Cinematographer Salvatore Totino , director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer of Columbia Pictures' The Da Vinci Code

The Rome Diocese has banned the makers of the DaVinci Code prequel “Angels & Demons” from filming in two churches in the Italian capital. Brian Graizer and Ron Howard had asked to film in two churches,   Santa Maria del Popolo and Santa Maria della Vittoria, two architectural jewels in the heart of Rome that include paintings by Caravaggio, sculptures by Bernini and a chapel designed by Raphael.

The Catholic leaders called for a boycott of the first film , Dan Brown’s “The DaVinci Code” …so they should have expected some resistance filming in their “backyard” so to speak.   I guess Ritchie Cunningham and Forest Gump have pissed off the Pope! I have some advice for you guys….being married to an Italian Catholic and movie geek by association (Toni) ..two words…..Collection Plate! You need to up the ante. The church responds better to donations than requests. You have to pay to play Mr Hanks.
