ROMAN HOLIDAY – This Saturday at the Hi-Pointe – Classic Film Series

ROMAN-HOLIDAY

“Joe, we can’t go running around town with a hot princess!”

ROMAN HOLIDAY and BREAKFAST AT TIFFANYS are the quintessential Audrey Hepburn movies. If you think Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, and Kate Winslet are the essence of Hollywood beauty but have never seen Audrey Hepurn, you are missing out on one of the greatest of screen icons. You’ll have your chance to bask in the glory that is Ms Hepburn this weekend when ROMAN HOLIDAY plays at the best place to see it -St. Louis’ classic movie theater: The Hi-Pointe (1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, MO 63117) It’s part of their Classic Film Series and screens Saturday, June 8th at 10:30am. Admission is only FIVE BUCKS!

The premise of ROMAN HOLIDAY is a bit of a Hollywood contrivance, but the dialog and the acting save it from becoming corny. It is Cinderella in reverse. The essential plot concerns Audrey Hepburn as a royal princess from a “nameless” European country. (Even one supporting character reaffirms that the country will remain nameless.) She is bored with her overly protected life which is so highly structured and ceremonial that even when she inadvertently loses her shoe during a high-class engagement, retrieving it becomes an act of refined etiquette. She is in Rome, one stop on a European tour with her entourage of dignitaries, and residing at her country’s embassy. Anxious to leave, if only for a moment, the gilded cage of her life of royal life, she sneaks out of the embassy and enters the heart of Rome via a food truck. Later she ends up drunk and unconscious on a Roman sidewalk. And guess who should happen by but Gregory Peck as Joe Bradley, second-rate American reporter who would like nothing more than to get the scoop of the century and hop back to the New York press scene. But of course he doesn’t know who she is. Being a good Samaritan (and the fact that a drunk Audrey Hepburn is laying there), he rescues her from the streets and brings her into his studio apartment. There is no question that this movie is rather schmaltzy by 21st-century standards. The story is a fantasy-comedy, but the writing and the acting which never lapses into too much sentimentality save the film, which could have been much sillier and much more syrupy. The sobering ending makes the film much better than it could have been. And of course Audrey Hepburn who essentially made her major screen debut steals the show and would go on to win the Oscar the year.

Q-FEST ST. LOUIS – The Gay Film Festival Starts Thursday

i-am-divine-e1362599886917

I’m super-excited about this year’s Q-Fest….and I’m not even gay!

There are a pair of must-see gay-themed films making their St. Louis debuts; I AM DIVINE, a documentary about the late crossdresser and John Waters frequent star, and James Franco’s INTERIOR LEATHER BAR, a high-concept recreation of scenes that were cut from William Friedkin’s notorious 1980 gay serial killer movie CRUISING. Divine was one of the biggest, most outrageous, and proudly different gay cultural icons the world has known and the new documentary about the performer I AM DIVINE plays at Q-FEST this Friday night at 7pm. A high (or low) point in Divine’s career was John Waters 1972’s masterpiece PINK FLAMINGOS where he/she competes for the title of “filthiest person alive” by eating fresh dog poop. With antics like that, it’s no surprise that the emerging punk scene adopted his visage on t-shirts.  I AM DIVINE will be preceded by the short LAST KISS by Chuck Lum, a brief elegy honoring the memory and tomb of Oscar Wilde. Chuck is an old buddy of mine and helped out with Vincentennial two years ago by going to Elizabeth Shepard’s apartment (she starred with Vincent Price in TOMB OF LIGEIA) and filming a wonderful testimonial by her about working with Vincent Price. This is the first of Chuck’s films to be shown at Q-Fest and I’m glad they’re showing it with the Divine documentary because that will draw a big crowd.

q-interiorleatherbar
INTERIOR LEATHER BAR plays afterwards at 9pm but requires a separate admission.

And those two aren’t even the films opening the sixth annual edition Q-Fest!

The Cinema St. Louis  event will be held Thursday, June 6 – Sunday, June 9, 2013, in the Winifred Moore Auditorium at Webster University. QFest uses the art of contemporary gay cinema to spotlight the diversity and inherent complexities of living an alternative lifestyle in today’s society. This year’s event will feature an eclectic slate of contemporary LGBTQ-themed feature films, documentaries, and shorts. Contact artistic director Chris Clark for additional details, questions, and the mega cool perks of sponsoring the event or a QFest film: chris@cinemastlouis.org or 314.289.4152.
Tickets
All screenings will be held at the Webster University’s Winifred Moore Auditorium, 470 E. Lockwood Ave. in Webster Groves. Individual tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for students and Cinema St. Louis members with valid and current photo IDs, and free for Webster U. students. I AM DIVINE is the story of Divine, aka Harris Glenn Milstead, from his humble beginnings as an overweight, teased Baltimore youth to internationally recognized drag superstar through his collaboration with filmmaker John Waters. Spitting in the face of the status quos of body image, gender identity, sexuality, and preconceived notions of beauty, Divine was the ultimate outsider turned underground royalty. With a completely committed in-your-face style, he blurred the line between performer and personality, and revolutionized pop culture. This definitive biographical portrait charts the legendary icon’s rise to infamy and emotional complexities.

The controversial 1980 film “Cruising,” which explored (or exploited) the S&M gay subculture, was forced by the MPAA to cut 40 minutes of sexually explicit material. Filmmakers James Franco and Travis Mathews re-imagine what might have transpired in those lost scenes in this intriguing film. The result is a provocative film about the importance of the radical and transgressive in society and the value of engaging with things that scare us. The films grapples with the need to challenge normalcy, the interplay of celebrity and experimentation, and the dilemma faced by actors struggling to reconcile who they are in life with who they portray on screen.

Parking may be a challenge Friday night due to the annual Webster Groves Art & Air Festival taking place all weekend across the street on the campus of Eden Seminary. Please allow extra time for parking and walking a little further to Webster U. and Moore Auditorium, which is in Webster Hall right across the street from Eden and the festival. Look for the castle-like structure in the middle of the circular drive in the northernmost face of the campus on Lockwood. The main doors lead directly to the theater. This will be an awesome St. Louis summer weekend, so please come early to enjoy this wonderful outdoor event before coming to QFest.

“Five years ago, I knew nothing about zombies.  Now, I consider myself an expert,” recalls Pitt. “Max Brooks’ book treats the zombie genre as a global pandemic, spreading much like we’ve witnessed viruses such as SARS travel.  What happens when this jumps the fire break…what happens when everything we concern our days with is rendered useless?  What happens when power structures and societal norms are obliterated? How will we survive?”

World War Z - World Premiere - Inside Arrivals
Director Marc Forster / Photo by Stuart C. Wilson/Getty Images for Paramount Pictures International.

“There are certain classic zombie elements that we brought along, but their movements and motivations will be different,” Forster says. Specifically, filmmakers based their behavior on the “swarm theory,” a pattern of movement seen in nature that he underscored even before these quite unnatural creatures appeared on screen.

“It’s the way flocks of birds or fish or ants move together. There is almost a ‘swarm intelligence’ to it. I thought it would be interesting to see these zombies, who have no intellect since they are walking dead, react in this swarm mentality. There is not a real direction because the zombies are the undead. But as a whole, there is an unconscious consciousness.” The filmmakers drew on many influences, from insects to police attack dogs to Javier Bardem’s performance in ‘No Country for Old Men.’

On an ordinary day, Gerry Lane and his family find their quiet drive interrupted by urban gridlock.  An ex-UN investigator, Lane senses that this is no ordinary traffic jam. As police helicopters buzz the sky and motorcycle cops careen wildly below, the city erupts into chaos.

Something is causing hordes of people to viciously attack each other – a lethal virus that is spread through a single bite, turning healthy humans into something unrecognizable, unthinking and feral.  Neighbor turns on neighbor; a helpful stranger suddenly becomes a dangerous enemy. The origins of the virus are unknown, and the number of infected grows exponentially larger each day, quickly becoming a global pandemic.  As the infected overwhelm the world’s armies and rapidly topple its governments, Lane is forced to return to his dangerous former life to insure the safety of his family, leading a desperate worldwide search for the source of the epidemic and a means to stop its relentless spread.

Academy Award-winning Visual Effects artists Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff, Jr., co-founders of Studio ADI (Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc.) have launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring their science fiction/horror film celebrating animatronics and makeup FX, “Harbinger Down,” to the silver screen. Gillis and Woodruff hope fans are excited to help not only make a new horror classic, but also to uplift an art form. The filmmakers’ goal is to raise $350,000 from fan support via the Kickstarter campaign by June 7, 2013 to get the project off the ground.

HARBINGER DOWN, set to star notable sci-fi and horror film actor Lance Henriksen, depicts a group of grad students who have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship’s crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things quickly become deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without mutation. Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. After being locked in ice for three decades, the creatures aren’t about to give up the warmth of human companionship.

“Animatronics and Makeup FX have been utilized less frequently in recent films, but this is not because of audience disinterest,” announced Gillis, who will write and direct the film. “In the spirit of sci-fi/horror classics, Alien and The Thing, Harbinger Down is a tense, claustrophobic full-length creature film that will feature only practical Animatronics and Makeup Effects. Fans of the art of Animatronics and Makeup FX know this technique is currently overlooked by the big studios; I’m hoping the fans will help us remedy that by supporting this labor of love.”

“Our company, Amalgamated Dynamics, will create the kind of Oscar caliber Creature Effects for which we are known,” commented Woodruff, who will produce, along with Studio ADI’s Jennifer Tung. “Traditional techniques still have a place in modern genre films. We didn’t give up painting, when cameras were invented.”

Gillis and Woodruff have over 60 years of experience between them and have worked with many top filmmakers, including James Cameron, David Fincher, Paul Verhoeven, Ridley Scott, Neill Blomkamp, Robert Zemeckis, Joe Johnston, Nora Ephron and Mike Nichols just to name a few. The filmmakers are utilizing Kickstarter to ask supporters of “old-school” visual effects to give them the opportunity to show it.

Contributors to the Harbinger Down Kickstarter Campaign will receive unique, amazing, thrilling, one-of-a-kind incentives for supporting the project.
