WHITE BIRD – Review

Helen Mirren stars as a French Jewish grandmother who survived the Holocaust in the family drama WHITE BIRD. Concerned about her grandson Julian (Bryce Gheisar), a boy who is struggling to fit in at his new school after being expelled from his previous one for mistreatment of another student, Grandmere (Mirren) recounts her youthful experiences, a story of her past he has never heard, to teach Julian about the lasting power of kindness. In flashback, the grandmother’s story takes us to WWII France, to her old French village in the woods, where the kindness of a non-Jewish boy saved her life.

Also starring Gillian Anderson, WHITE BIRD is a moving, beautifully-shot and sensitively-told family drama from director Marc Forster, who also directed NEVERLAND. The film is essentially a young adult tale, offering a coming-of-age, historical drama about a grandmother teaching her troubled grandson valuable life lessons about bravery and kindness, by using her own experiences surviving the Holocaust. The screenplay by Mark Bomback is based on a graphic novel by R.J. Palacio, “White Bird: A Wonder Story,” which is a composite of several true stories that are lightly fictionalized. This coming-of-age family drama is part of a series, “Wonder films,” which aims to inspire hope, kindness and humanity.

Rather than the usual historical drama, WHITE BIRD has an unexpected element, which is a hint of Brothers Grimm fairy tale in how this grandmother recounts her wartime experiences to her grandson. Starting with voice-over by Mirren, the film begins its travels to the past by describing the place where she grew up like something out of those Grimm fairy tales: an ancient French town with an old castle at its center and surrounded by deep, dark woods. As a young girl, Sara was afraid to go into the woods, for fear of wolves. The one exception is in the spring, when she and her parents picnic in the woods where the bluebells bloom. Mind you, the tone here is Brothers Grimm, not Disney, with those darker stories’ pattern of a peaceful life falling under darkness and evil but with some light emerging in the end.

The film moves back and forth in time a bit, as storyteller Grandmere Sara weaves her own history into a lesson for her troubled grandson. Young Sara (Ariella Glaser) is a beloved only child, a bit spoiled, the daughter of a doctor father and a math teacher mother. They have a comfortable life. At school, bright Sara also shows a talent for drawing, and is encouraged by her teacher. Sara has a crush on a handsome boy, Vincent (Jem Matthews), but like most of the students, she ignores another boy, who had polio and now walks with a crutch and a leg brace, although some students target him for taunting and bullying.

When the Nazis arrive, nothing much changes at first, even for French Jewish families like Sara’s, because the town is in “unoccupied” France. Then things do start to change, with signs banning Jews going up in shop windows and Jewish people losing their jobs, including Sara’s mother. When Nazis come to the school to round up the Jewish students, Sara manages to escape and hides in the school. She is unsure what to do, until the boy with the crutch, whose name is Julien (Orlando Schwerdt), offers his help. Julien smuggles her out and takes her to his parents’ farmhouse, where his kind-hearted non-Jewish parents hide her.

Sara is hidden in the barn, because Julien’s kindly parents, Vivienne (Gillian Anderson) and Jean Paul (Jo Stone-Fewings), worry that their nosey neighbors might be Nazi sympathizers and might expose her. Hiding her puts them at risk too but Vivienne especially is warm and supportive of the frightened girl. Thoughtful Julien brings Sara food, but also drawing materials and books, and tutors her in school work, so she can keep up. In the barn, they two young people grow close, escaping into a world of imagination by using an old car to pretend to travel, making up stories of adventure.

As expected, Helen Mirren is charmingly winning as the lively, artist grandmother. The bulk of the film is the historical flashback, and there both Ariella Glaser and Orlando Schwerdt excel in their roles as Sara and Julien, with an especially good performance from young Schwerdt. Gillian Anderson is very good as Julien’s warm, supportive mother but it is really the young actors who shine at the center of this drama.

As the tense story of the Jewish girl hidden in the barn unfolds, director Forster skillfully weaves in a message of hope and human empowerment into this sensitively-told wartime drama. The story mirrors many of the true stories of hidden children or families aided by their non-Jewish neighbors. The Nazi threat is always looming, and increased when a group of local boys, including Sara’s crush Vincent, join the Nazis as a town militia. Yet Forster’s storytelling puts an emphasis on the power of human kindness, and bravery in the face of cruelty. The film is, by turns, tense and dramatic or touching and inspiring, portions that Forster skillfully balances. Part coming-of-age tale, part war drama, the film also looks at friendship, budding romantic feelings, and focuses on the power of imagination and art.

This is an emotionally powerful film, that is mostly very well-told, apart from one scene, with wolves in the woods, that leans a bit too heavily into the Grimm’s fairy tale aspect. Overall, WHITE BIRD is a moving, hopeful tale of courage that has the benefit of being a rare survivor’s story film that one is told in a manner appropriate for younger people (preteens, although not the very young) while still teaches some valuable lessons about the power of human kindness in overcoming evil. As the grandmother says near the film’s end, paraphrasing Martin Luther King, “You cannot fight darkness with darkness, only with light.”

WHITE BIRD opens Friday, Oct. 4, at Landmark’s Plaza Frontenac Cinema.

“Five years ago, I knew nothing about zombies.  Now, I consider myself an expert,” recalls Pitt. “Max Brooks’ book treats the zombie genre as a global pandemic, spreading much like we’ve witnessed viruses such as SARS travel.  What happens when this jumps the fire break…what happens when everything we concern our days with is rendered useless?  What happens when power structures and societal norms are obliterated? How will we survive?”

“There are certain classic zombie elements that we brought along, but their movements and motivations will be different,” Forster says. Specifically, filmmakers based their behavior on the “swarm theory,” a pattern of movement seen in nature that he underscored even before these quite unnatural creatures appeared on screen.

“It’s the way flocks of birds or fish or ants move together. There is almost a ‘swarm intelligence’ to it. I thought it would be interesting to see these zombies, who have no intellect since they are walking dead, react in this swarm mentality. There is not a real direction because the zombies are the undead. But as a whole, there is an unconscious consciousness.” The filmmakers drew on many influences, from insects to police attack dogs to Javier Bardem’s performance in ‘No Country for Old Men.’

WorldWarZ_Poster

Zombie Mountain. Yikes! Better have your apocalypse survival guide ready as you check out the new poster and trailer for Paramount Pictures’ WORLD WAR Z. Starring Academy Award-nominee Brad Pitt, with Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) directing, the story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop a pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.

Snakes On A Plane becomes Zombies On A Plane – where’s Samuel L. Jackson when you need him? Those faithful purists of the source material, Max Brooks’ best-selling novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, already have a problem with the film. The reason? The book, told by survivors, is set after the fact while the film is set pre-war. We’ll see how the film is received, especially at the box office, when it’s released in June.

Produced by Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Colin Wilson, the screenplay is written by Matthew Michael Carnahan (State of Play) . Starring Pitt (Moneyball), Mireille Enos (AMC’s “The Killing”), Daniella Kertesz in her feature film debut, James Badge Dale (The Departed) and Matthew Fox (“Lost”), the film’s Executive Producers are Forster, Brad Simpson, David Ellison, Paul Schwake, Dana Goldberg, Graham King and Tim Headington.

Relativity Media’s MACHINE GUN PREACHER New Images

Gerard Butler, stars as “Sam Childers,” the impassioned founder of Angels of East Africa rescue organization, brings hope where there is none to hundreds of children in Relativity Media’s release MACHINE GUN PREACHER.

Relativity Media has released these new images and poster from MACHINE GUN PREACHER – the inspirational true story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who undergoes an astonishing transformation and finds his unexpected calling as the savior of hundreds of kidnapped and orphaned children in war-torn Sudan. Gerard Butler (300) delivers a searing performance as Childers, the impassioned founder of the Angels of East Africa rescue organization in Golden Globe®-nominated director Marc Forster’s (Monster’s Ball, The Kite Runner) moving story of violence and redemption.

Michelle Monaghan and Gerard Butler star as husband and wife in the inspirational true story of Sam Childers. A former drug-dealing criminal Sam (Butler) makes the life-changing decision to go to East Africa to help repair homes destroyed by civil war in Relativity Media’s release MACHINE GUN PREACHER.

When ex-biker-gang member Sam Childers (Butler) makes the life-changing decision to go to East Africa to help repair homes destroyed by civil war, he is outraged by the unspeakable horrors faced by the region’s vulnerable populace, especially the children. Ignoring the warnings of more experienced aide workers, Sam breaks ground for an orphanage where it’s most needed—in the middle of territory controlled by the brutal Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a renegade militia that forces children to become soldiers before they even reach their teens.

But for Sam, it is not enough to shelter the LRA’s intended victims. Determined to save as many as possible, he leads armed missions deep into enemy territory to retrieve kidnapped children, restoring peace to their lives—and eventually his own. An explosive, real-life tale of a man who has rescued over a thousand orphans from starvation, disease and enslavement, Machine Gun Preacher also stars Michelle Monaghan (Source Code), Kathy Baker (Cold Mountain), Madeline Carroll (Mr. Popper’s Penguins), Academy Award® nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) and Souleymane Sy Savane (“Damages”).

The script is written by Jason Keller (Relativity’s Untitled Snow White Project). Producers are Marc Forster, Robbie Brenner (A Perfect Getaway), Gary Safady, Craig Chapman (Highland Park) and Deborah Giarratana (2012). Director of photography is Roberto Schaefer (Finding Neverland). Editor is Matt Chesse (Finding Neverland). Production designer is Philip Messina (The Last Airbender). Costume designer is Frank L. Fleming (The Kite Runner). Jillian Kugler (Quantum of Solace) is associate producer. Douglas Saylor Jr. (Main Street) is co-producer. First Look At Gerard Butler In MACHINE GUN PREACHER

Check out this first look still of Souleymane Sy Savane and Gerard Butler in Relativity Media’s release MACHINE GUN PREACHER.

Directed and produced by DGA and Golden Globe®-nominee Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Monster’s Ball) and written by Jason Keller (Relativity’s Untitled Snow White Project), the film stars Gerard Butler (300) in a tour de force performance and will release in Los Angeles and New York on September 23, 2011. The film will expand markets in the weeks to follow. Lionsgate has international distribution rights, working in partnership with Relativity who has North American rights to theatrically market and distribute the film.

The film also showcases powerful performances by an ensemble cast, including Michelle Monaghan (Due Date), Kathy Baker (Cold Mountain), Oscar®-nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road), Madeline Carroll (The Spy Next Door) and breakout actor Souleymane Sy Savane (Goodbye Solo).

Machine Gun Preacher is based on the true story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who finds faith leading him on a path to East Africa. Shocked by the mayhem in Sudan, Childers becomes a crusader for hundreds of refugee children. Inspired to create a safe haven for the multitudes fleeing enslavement by the brutal Lord’s Resistance Army, he restores peace to their lives and eventually his own.

Producing are Relativity’s Robbie Brenner, Safady Entertainment’s Gary Safady and Craig Chapman, and GG Filmz’s Deborah Giarratana.

“This is a powerful story, and we feel strongly that it is one audiences need to see. Forster once again proves that he is among the best directors of our time and Butler delivers a career-defining performance bolstered by a rock solid supporting cast,” says Relativity’s President of Worldwide Production, Tucker Tooley.

“The film is blessed to have two passionate partners in Relativity and Lionsgate. I’m excited to be working with both companies to bring the incredible story of Sam Childers to the world. I’m really proud of my cast, and all of their hard work in making this movie that means so much to all of us personally,” said Forster.

“We have a longstanding relationship with Marc, and given that together we felt it was best for the film to be released domestically this year, we are very happy that Relativity is able to handle it,” says Mike Paseornek, Lionsgate’s President of Motion Picture Production and Development.

Looking ahead, Relativity will release David Ellis’ Shark Night 3D on September 2, 2011 and then the highly-anticipated Immortals on November 11, 2011, starring Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Freida Pinto, Luke Evans and Kellan Lutz with John Hurt and Mickey Rourke. The studio is in production on its Untitled Snow White Project (in theatres March 16, 2012), starring Lily Collins as Snow White, Oscar®-winner Julia Roberts as the evil Queen, Armie Hammer as Prince Andrew Alcott, and Nathan Lane as the hapless and bungling servant to the Queen. Relativity’s expansive 2012 slate also includes Haywire (in theatres January 20, 2012), Act of Valor (in theatres February 17, 2012), Untitled Raven Project (in theatres March 9, 2012), Untitled Farrelly/Wessler Project (in theatres April 13, 2012), House at the End of the Street (in theatres April 20, 2012), Safe Haven (in theatres June 1, 2012) and Hunter Killer (in theatres December 21, 2012).
