Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today that the studio has brought together an extraordinary number of iconic video game companies, whose classic characters – including PAC-MAN, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Galaga, Frogger, Q*bert, and Space Invaders – will be featured in the highly-anticipated action comedy PIXELS, starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad, and Brian Cox, and directed by Chris Columbus. The film will be released on May 15, 2015.

In Pixels, when intergalactic aliens misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them, they attack the Earth, using the games as models for their various assaults. President Will Cooper (James) has to call on his childhood best friend, ’80s video game champion Sam Brenner (Sandler), now a home theater installer, to lead a team of old-school arcaders (Dinklage and Gad) to defeat the aliens and save the planet. Monaghan plays the team’s unique weapons specialist.

Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. (Q*bert)
Taito Corporation (Space Invaders)
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (Joust, Defender, Robotron and Wizard of Wor)

Commenting on the announcement, the film’s director, Chris Columbus, said, “There would be no way to make the movie without these legendary characters – they are as important to the film as the roles that Adam, Kevin, Michelle, Peter, Josh, and Brian are playing. It was a real thrill to see everything come together exactly as we envisioned it, and we’re grateful to have all of these fantastic companies on board.”

Producer Allen Covert added, “These classic characters are part of the DNA of the project, so it was critical that we work together to bring them on board. Fortunately, they were all extremely receptive. We approached them with a deep love for their characters and a respect for the elements that make them unique and iconic, and we’ve worked with the companies to incorporate those elements into the film.”

At Comic-Con San Diego, from July 24-27, arcaders 13 years of age and older with Comic-Con badges will have the chance to engage with many of these classic original arcade games and try them out again as the studio features a Pixels Electric Dreams Factory arcade at the Hard Rock Hotel, 209 5th Ave., San Diego.

EVERGREEN: THE ROAD TO LEGALIZATION – The DVD Review

evergreen

Review by Kathy Kaiser

Producer/Director Riley Morton takes on his first documentary film, jumping straight into the frying pan, as he covers the legalizing of marijuana in the State of Washington.

After 40 years of the drug war that has plagued our country, Washington State becomes the emblazoned battleground for legalizing cannabis. EVERGREEN takes you deep into both sides of the equation so you can see first-hand the unwavering convictions of each side.

ever5

Although medicinal marijuana has been available in Washington for years now, activists for complete legalization share their convictions as to why the substance should be legalized, as they bring forth Initiative 502, hoping to have it placed on the ballot in November of 2012.

Those opposed to legalization are just as head strong, proposing that 1-502 is going to do nothing but add DUI convictions, new taxes and additional penalties and restrictions on the citizens of Washington – all things that will negatively affect their youth, and the patients and providers who have been supplying marijuana for medicinal purposes – bringing further stress and pain into their lives.

ever4

EVERGREEN gives you the hard facts of the changes in policy that resulted from the legalization of marijuana in the state of Washington, and adds the personal touch of conveying both sides to truly tell it all. Morton does an incredible job of bringing to the forefront this heated debate and continuing fight for legalizing nationwide, as our country continues to struggle with tackling the issue state by state.

ever1

Whether you are for or against marijuana’s legalization – EVERGREEN will put it all into perspective for you, as it brings to life both opposing views. If your state decides to travel the path to legalization, you will know the facts and principles of each side after viewing this film – thanks to Morton and his team of filmmakers – thus educating yourself before you too have to place your vote for-or-against on election day.

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien.

“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.

Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain.

As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. The international ensemble cast is led by Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, with Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, and Orlando Bloom.

THE PLEASURES OF BEING/ OUT OF STEP – The DVD Review

pleasurtes1

Review by Kathy Kaiser

What do you get when you combine a love for jazz from a very young age – a prolific journalistic talent – and a civil rights libertarian who will let you know exactly where he stands on any issue, including being pro-life – you get the story of the man – THE LEGEND – whose life of work has touched both the cultural and political sides of our mere existence in this country for over 65 years – NAT HENTOFF.

pleasurtes2

David L Lewis, a journalistic and broadcast media talent himself for over 30 years, brings the man himself along for this ride – exposing Hentoff’s life’s work – and mostly in his own words – with this new documentary – THE PLEASURES OF BEING/ OUT OF STEP. Stepping into the limelight of his career, Hentoff emerged as the Jazz critic of all critics, being named The Jazz MASTER and gaining fame and recognition by the musicians he critiqued – how often does that happen?  Interviewing Jazz talents like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, even the 60’s alternative artist, Bob Dylan, bringing their talent and music to the mainstream, Henhoff became beloved for his own “alternative journalistic style”, and innate way to transform any musician’s music and life, just by covering their music. From his one line critiques, to his inexhaustible and high-volume explanations of their work, strategically placed on the back of their album covers, Nat Hentoff became “the voice” of generations of Jazz musicians the world over – bringing this music and its significance in our society, to light.

pleasurtes4

As much as Jazz was a part of Nat’s life, so was having the ability to express his views and thoughts as it pertained to many civil rights issues from the 1940’s through the 1980’s – which he published as a contributing writer for such publications as Down Beat, The Village Voice, The New Yorker, The New York Times, and the Washington Post. These outlets gave Hentoff the opportunity to shape more than one cultural revolution with his alternative views and heavy handed penning, professing and reminding each of us, of our unalienable right to the 1st amendment in this country – freedom of expression – which Hentoff never wavered from. This film also makes a point to let you hear about the man and legend through the words of the individuals who were along for the ride of Hentoff’s creative passions – including stage presence and funny man Lenny Bruce, his second wife and greatest fan Margot, First amendment Council Floyd Abrams, fellow journalist and editor of the Village Voice, Karen Durbin, and writer Amiri Baraka.

pleasurtes3

Even if you have never listened to Mr. Ellington’s music, or have been intrigued by our countries Civil Rights movements, the Aids epidemic or ROWE vs. WADE, it doesn’t matter – you need to see this documentary. Pleasures of Being Out of Step is a true masterpiece –Nat Hentoff and his life are truly fantastic documentary material, and Lewis did a superb job of bringing the man, and his effect on our society over decades, to life. Fascinating and Intriguing is how I would describe this film of how one man, and his vision, can change countless lives and aid in breaking down cultural stereotypes to become the voice of reason – this is NAT HENTOFF ‘s story.

The Weinstein Company To Release ONE CHANCE On Yahoo Screen Before It Hits Theaters

onechance_poster3_final

On the night of June 9th 2007, a new television reality show called ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ went on air in the UK. On its first ever broadcast, a shy, unassuming man opened his mouth to sing the famous operatic aria ‘Nessun Dorma’, delivering a beautiful, stirring rendition that would change his life from that moment forward.

Swept up in the contagious emotion of Giacomo Puccini’s stunning aria, and the unlikely figure with crooked teeth and diluted confidence who had crooned it for them, the show’s three judges – Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan – stared in awe at what they had just witnessed, while the audience of 2,000 at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff erupted in a standing ovation.

Britain was instantly won over by Paul Potts, who was then working as a manager at the Port Talbot branch of The Carphone Warehouse, and followed him on his journey to becoming the first ever winner of the new talent show and, subsequently, a world-famous opera singer.

Potts’ unanticipated vocal prowess didn’t stay confined to UK shores for long, blazing a scorched trail around the globe as news of his improbable audition went viral and millions watched it for themselves on YouTube.

But despite his own admission before going on stage that he was lacking in confidence, few knew the herculean effort it had taken for Potts to reach that point, and the trials, tribulations and monumental setbacks he had suffered along the way.

As thrilling as Potts’ on-air success was to behold, it was the story leading up to his ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ appearance that the filmmakers of ONE CHANCE wanted to tell: the tale of a steelworker’s son from south Wales who fell in love with opera at an early age and, despite bullying, skepticism and physical hardship, never gave up on trying to achieve his dreams. And by the way, it’s a comedy.

ONE CHANCE

Today, Yahoo and The Weinstein Company have announced that the U.S. pre-theatrical release of the film ONE CHANCE will be exclusively on Yahoo Screen beginning this fall.

“We’re so thrilled to be partnering with Yahoo on this first venture in bringing ‘One Chance’ to audiences online before it hits theaters. In today’s digital era, technology has developed and changed the landscape of how many people watch movies and TV. Our partnership with Yahoo has allowed us to adapt and expand our reach to limitless audiences,” said David Glasser, COO and President of The Weinstein Company.

From the director of “The Devil Wears Prada,” ONE CHANCE is the remarkable and inspirational true story of Paul Potts, a shy, bullied shop assistant by day and an amateur opera singer by night.

Fresh from celebrating his Tony Award-winning Broadway run in ‘One Man, Two Guvnors’, BAFTA winner James Corden (THE HISTORY BOYS) stars as Paul Potts. The cast also includes Julie Walters (MAMMA MIA!, CALENDAR GIRLS, BILLY ELLIOT), Mackenzie Crook (THE PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN), Colm Meaney (GET HIM TO THE GREEK), Jemima Rooper (KINKY BOOTS), Valeria Bilello (PAZZE DI ME) and rising star Alexandra Roach (THE IRON LADY).

Directed by David Frankel (THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, MARLEY & ME, HOPE SPRINGS) and written by Justin Zackham (THE BUCKET LIST), ONE CHANCE is produced by Mike Menchel, Brad Weston, Kris Thykier (KICK-ASS, THE DEBT, I GIVE IT A YEAR), Simon Cowell, and executive produced by Bob and Harvey Weinstein.

CLUE – With All Three Endings! – Screens Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

CLUE-HEADER-560

“Life after death is as improbable as sex after marriage!

clue7

CLUE plays midnights this weekend (July 25th and 26th) at The Tivoli Theater as part of the Reel late at The Tivoli Midnight series.

Way back in 1985, before we were translating literally every board game, video game, or action figure into a movie, there was CLUE.

clue2

As in the Parker Brothers board game, seven suspects find themselves in a mysterious mansion with the body of someone who has been murdered by one of them. Was it Colonel Mustard (Martin Mull) with the revolver in the conservatory? Or was it Miss Scarlett (Lesley Ann Warren) with the rope in the billiards room?

Could it be both?

clue6

CLUE was filmed with three possible endings. That’s 321 fewer endings than the board game permits, but two endings more than offered by most movies.

What are you afraid of, a fate worse than death?” Professor Plum (Christopher Lloyd) asks.

No, just death,” replies Mrs. Peacock (Eileen Brennan). “Isn’t that enough?”

When I first saw this film back in 1985, I found it a tiresome retread of Neil Simon’s MURDER BY DEATH with director Jonathan Lynn’s pratfall-heavy jokiness a poor substitute for Neil Simon’s scriptwork. Even the cast seemed a bit of a comedown, though Eileen Brennan was in both films. It was not a box-office success then, but time has done funny things to CLUE. Not only has it developed a huge cult following, but my own eyes have been opened to the slow-burning cleverness of Lynn’s well-presented concept and a cast that, perhaps because it had no A-list stars, felt more need to dig into the material and get every last bit of funny out of it. You might miss Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn) the first time she says her husband just “lies around on his back all day”, but you know enough to laugh the second time.

clue5

Husbands should be like Kleenex, soft, strong, and disposable,” says Mrs. White.

You lure men to their death like a spider with flies!”

Flies are where men are most vulnerable.”

The lines are seldom as good as that – though the late Ms Kahn seems to get the best ones, and there’s some weak business involving pseudonyms and minor characters that only gets in the way of the central business. I still groan at the line “Communism was just a red herring“.

clue3

But CLUE succeeds in its central mission of merry-making, aided by the multiple-ending gimmick and Tim Curry’s central role as the zany butler Wadsworth who recaps the entire movie in five minutes. The pratfalls are a lot better than I thought the first time, too.

clue1

Now you can see CLUE, and ALL THREE of its endings on the big screen when it screens midnights this weekend ( July 25th and 26th) at The Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.

The Tivoli’s located at 6350 Delmar Blvd., University City, MO. Admission is a mere $8!
