Four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore is featured in this first poster for Sony Classics Pictures STILL ALICE. The film was an Official Selection at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival.
In the film, Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children, is a renowned linguistics professor who starts to forget words. When she receives a diagnosis of Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease, Alice and her family find their bonds thoroughly tested. Her struggle to stay connected to who she once was is frightening, heartbreaking, and inspiring.
STILL ALICE is based on the book Still Alice by Lisa Genova.
Writers-Directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland made Sundance history in 2006 when Quinceañera won both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize. It went on to win numerous other prizes, including the Humanitas screenwriting Award, and the John Cassavettes Spirit Award in 2007. Their film The Last of Robin Hood, starring Kevin Kline, Susan Sarandon and Dakota Fanning, premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in 2013 and came out theatrically in the US in September 2014.
On casting Moore in the film, Wash Westmoreland said:
We became enamored of its central character. There was something undeniably inspiring in Alice — in her tenacity, her willfulness, the way she would never take it lying down. Whatever the disease brought, she was determined to handle it in the most practical way possible. I don’t know exactly in what chapter it happened, but the literary Alice we imagined from the page started to lose her dark curly hair as it turned a fiery red. “Who do you think could do this?” I asked Richard. “Julianne Moore,” he typed.
The more we thought about it, the more perfect the casting. Julianne could not only project the scintillating intelligence and complexity of a linguistics professor but also the vulnerability and simplicity of the later stages. She’d be able to master every beat of the character’s deterioration. She is quite simply one of the finest actors on the planet. We had met with her a few years before on another project, pitched hard to get her to do it and eagerly waited for weeks and weeks as she deliberated and finally passed. This time it was different. We sent a message to her about the project and she read the book even before the script arrived. A day or so later, we were on Skype. Within seconds she said, “I’m in.”
Moore will next be seen as President Alma Coin in THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY with Jennifer Lawrence and Philip Seymour Hoffman which will release on November 24th. Next year she will star opposite Jeff Bridges in THE SEVENTH SON due out on February 6, 2015 and in David Cronenberg’s MAPS TO THE STARS alongside Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattinson and John Cusack. She is currently in production on the indie drama FREEHELD with Ellen Page and Zach Galifianakis.
STILL ALICE opens during the awards season on December 31, 2014; limited January 16, 2015 in NY and LA.
Lotus Entertainment and di Bonaventura Pictures announced today Keanu Reeves will star in REPLICAS from director Tanya Wexler, the follow-up to her successful hit (HYSTERIA). From a screenplay by Chad St. John, REPLICAS is produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura (GI JOE, TRANSFORMERS Franchises), Stephen Hamel, Reeves, and Fundamental Films. Company Films’ partners Hamel and Reeves developed the script based on Hamel’s treatment. Lotus will introduce the sci-fi thriller to foreign buyers starting at the upcoming AFM. CAA is handling domestic rights.
After a car accident kills his loving family, a daring neuroscientist will stop at nothing to bring them back, even if it means pitting himself against a government-controlled laboratory, a police task force, and the physical laws of science themselves.
Production is slated for spring 2015.
No stranger to sci-fi action films, Reeves is possibly best known for his role as “Neo” in the wildly popular THE MATRIX TRILOGY. Reeves highly anticipated action film JOHN WICK opened this month.
Lotus Entertainment’s Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel said, “We loved the notion of taking the ‘how far will a man go to save his family’ story hook and then adding a high concept sci-fi twist. Keanu has obviously had a lot of success in the sci-fi genre and we are excited to have him anchoring a story which we believe will have great appeal to audiences across the globe.”
Di Bonaventura commented, “From my experience working with Keanu on THE MATRIX franchise through our collaboration on CONSTANTINE, I have always been impressed by Keanu’s ability to bring a genuine level of humanity to the sci-fi genre through his performance. I am looking forward to collaborating with Keanu once again on this unique take on what lengths a person will go to alter the past, and the implications of those actions.”
Director Wexler said, “I jumped at the opportunity to work with Keanu, Stephen, and Lorenzo. I love near-future sci-fi and have always been drawn to stories about scientists on the cutting edge of technology whether that’s three years from now or 130 years ago. These are the mavericks that change our lives. This is a story about one who goes to extremes with his own family and is forced to confront that question–how far is too far?”
Lotus Entertainment’s current film slate includes: Luis Prieto’s KIDNAP starring Halle Berry; Tom Tykwer’s A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING starring two-time Academy Award Winner Tom Hanks; Scott Hicks’ FALLEN based on the best-selling YA novel; Henry Hobson’s MAGGIE starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Abigail Breslin, acquired by Lionsgate for North America; and Craig Zobel’s Z FOR ZACHARIAH with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine.
Paramount Pictures today announced that Academy Award-nominees Greg Kinnear and Djimon Hounsou and Academy Award-winners Renee Zellweger and Jon Voight will star in SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME, based on the best-selling nonfiction book by Ron Hall and Denver Moore with Lynn Vincent, author of the bestselling book Heaven Is for Real.
Michael Carney will make his directorial debut from a screenplay he co-wrote with Alexander Foard and Ron Hall. Mary Parent and Cale Boyter will produce through Disruption Entertainment, alongside Darren Moorman, Stephen Johnson and Ron Hall. The executive producers are Chris Bancroft, Hans Graffunder Michael Carney and Foard.
Principal photography began October 27th in Jackson, Mississippi.
SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME is the story of an international art dealer Ron Hall (Kinnear) who must befriend a dangerous homeless man (Hounsou) in order to save his struggling marriage to his wife (Zellweger), a woman whose dreams will lead all three of them on the most remarkable journey of their lives. Voight plays Hall’s father, with whom he reconciles thanks to the revelations of his new life.
Zellweger and Kinnear previously starred together in NURSE BETTY.
WaterTower Music today announced the November 18 release of Interstellar: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, with music by renowned composer Hans Zimmer, whose career has earned him Grammy, Golden Globe, Classical Brit, Academy, Tony, and American Music Awards.
The soundtrack will be available in three configurations: a Star Wheel Constellation Chart Digipak, a deluxe digital-only version, and an Illuminated Star Projection Edition with bonus content (coming later this year).
INTERSTELLAR, from Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures, pairs the creative forces of Hans Zimmer and esteemed director Christopher Nolan, who collaborated previously on THE DARK KNIGHT film trilogy and INCEPTION.
“Chris wanted us to push the limits,” offers Zimmer. “Every conversation was about pushing boundaries and exploring new territories. This movie virtually dictates that you put everything on the line and keep the laboratory doors wide open and experiment to the very end. It tested our limits: the limits of what musicians are capable of, the limits of what could be recorded, the limits of everyone’s stamina, commitment and invention, and I think we got it.”
“I believe that Hans’ score for Interstellar has the tightest bond between music and image that we’ve yet achieved,” Nolan reflected. “And we’re excited for people to be able to revisit the soundtrack once they’ve had the chance to experience the music in the film itself.”
Each release is now available for pre-order. The Star Wheel Constellation Digipak and the Digital Deluxe Album will be available November 18, and the Illuminated Star Projection Edition is scheduled to ship later this year.
The Illuminated Star Projection Edition (Pre-Order) features special illuminated star projection packaging, 2 CDs featuring 28 tracks, including 30 minutes of music unavailable anywhere else, and more.
INTERSTELLAR opens with advance screenings in IMAX 70mm film, 70mm film and 35mm film formats on Wednesday, November 5th, two days ahead of its nationwide release on November 7. The advance showings will play in select theaters in more than 240 locations across the U.S. and Canada.
INTERSTELLAR stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, John Lithgow and Michael Caine.
With our time on Earth coming to an end, a team of explorers undertakes the most important mission in human history; traveling beyond this galaxy to discover whether mankind has a future among the stars.
Directed by Christopher Nolan, written by Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan, and produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Lynda Obst.
Starring Meryl Streep, James Corden, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Johnny Depp and Chris Pine, INTO THE WOODS is a modern twist on several of the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests.
In the new featurette, director Rob Marshall, composer Stephen Sondheim, along with the cast, discuss the making of the Disney’s upcoming film.
The big-screen adaptation welcomes songs from the stage musical, including “Children Will Listen,” “Giants in the Sky,” “On the Steps of the Palace,” “No One Is Alone” and “Agony,” among others.
“Into The Woods” premiered on Broadway on November 5, 1987, at the Martin Beck Theatre. The production, which ran for 764 performances, won Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book of a Musical and Best Actress in a Musical. Among other awards, the musical received five Drama Desk Awards, including Best Musical.
“Into the Woods” has been produced around the world, including a 1988 U.S. tour, a 1990 West End production and Broadway and London revivals, in addition to a television production, DVD recording and a 10-year-anniversary concert.
This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy), all tied together by an original story involving a Baker and his Wife (James Corden and Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the Witch (Meryl Streep), who has put a curse on them.
Rob Marshall, the acclaimed filmmaker behind the Academy Award-winning musical “Chicago” and Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” directs the film, which is based on the Tony-winning original musical by James Lapine, who also penned the screenplay, and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, who provides the music and lyrics.
Produced by John DeLuca, Marshall, “Wicked” producer Marc Platt and Callum McDougall, INTO THE WOODS will be released in theaters December 25, 2014.
Get ready to howl with laughter in this all-new family comedy starring America’s favorite St. Bernard, the one and only Beethoven. Produced by Universal 1440 Entertainment, the production arm of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, BEETHOVEN’S TREASURE TAIL is on Digital HD now and on DVD and Blu-ray Combo Pack with DVD, Digital HD & Ultraviolet on October 28, 2014.
The new movie is a follow up to Beethoven’s Big Break (2008), the sixth installment in the Beethoven film series.
After a doggone disaster of a movie shoot, the big-hearted pooch and his trainer, Eddie (Jonathan Silverman, Beethoven’s Big Break), are heading home when they get stranded in a small coastal village. When Beethoven befriends a local boy (Bretton Manley, Ted), he helps him find a pirate map to lost treasure and together they em-bark on an adventure that brings the whole town together. Co-starring Morgan Fairchild (Flamingo Road), Kristy Swanson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator), it’s a heartwarming “tail” about finding fun wherever your nose leads you.
WAMG recently spoke with actor Jonathan Silverman on the phone about his latest movie.
WAMG: Many of us know you from WEEKEND AT BERNIE’S and BRIGHTON BACH MEMOIRS. Now comes your second film in the BEETHOVEN series, BEETHOVEN’S TREASURE TAIL.
You recently starred in the movie CRAWLSPACE and now you’re headlining the family friendly BEETHOVEN movie. How did you get involved with this series?
Jonathan Silverman: I’ve been lucky to be doing this now for 30 years and I’ve never considered myself to be anything more than a working actor. I have been pigeon holed in any direction, so if I jump from one genre to the other I’m okay with that.
The first BEETHOVEN movie I did alongside my wife, Jennifer Finnigan, and we had a blast together.
Universal hadn’t done a BEETHOVEN movie in a while and a friend of mine, Mike Elliott, was making his directorial debut. We had met years earlier on Queen Latifah’s movie, THE COOKOUT.
I got a phone call from him and he asked me to play the lead in this new BEETHOVEN film. My wife and I starred in it and we knew that after we had children one day, it’d be nice to able to show them a movie with mommy and daddy. (laughs).
BEETHOVEN’S BIG BREAK was well received and successful and Universal wanted to make another, so here we go again. It’s adorable.
WAMG: Definitely – especially if you have children.
JS: It’s geared toward family audiences and was made for kids and their parents. It’s cute and funny. With all the cartoonish situations in it, there are a lot of laughs. Families young and old will enjoy it.
WAMG: What was it like working with Kristy Swanson and Morgan Fairchild?
JS: Oh they’re great! I’ve known Kristy for decades. She is such a joy. Morgan is just terrific! She came in for a few days and ready to play. She developed this really great character, perhaps slightly based on talent agent Sue Mengers wearing this wild outfit with big glasses. She was talking in a thick accent, virtually unrecognizable and really funny. Morgan is such a beautiful woman and so nice to everyone.
WAMG: How did the filming go?
JS: All the folks in Halifax, Nova Scotia were so welcoming and beyond lovely. It made the shoot such fun. From the people on the street to the people feeding us lobster three times a day, it was a joy!
WAMG: Will there be anymore BEETHOVEN movies?
JS: If there’s another one, I’d love to be involved with it.
WAMG: What can you tell us about your new TV show?
JS: I did a pilot which is called “Significant Mother.” We shot it in Portland a couple months ago. It’s looking good and the fine folks over at the CW network are negotiating to air it. It’s a half hour, one camera comedy and awfully funny. We’ve actually shot three episodes so far, so we’re hoping they’ll pick it up.
WAMG: You and your wife directed OPPOSITE SEX – how was it to work on and helm a film together?
JS: I did! It went just great. I had only directed one other movie before, but Jennifer was so helpful with all the shooting, editing and post-production. When this opportunity came my way, I told her we should work on it together. We were told it’ll either be the end of your 10-year relationship after working 24 hours a day together OR it’ll be the greatest thing ever – and it was. I think she’s an amazing director.
The movie got sold and it’s coming out in January 2015 in theaters. Its stars Mena Suvari, Eric Roberts, Kenan Thompson, Kristin Chenoweth – we got a whole bunch of friends to be in the film. It’s an adult romantic comedy.
WAMG: Your wife is on Twitter – you’re on Instagram. Having been an actor for a couple of decades now, what do you think of the world of social networking to promote films?
JS: I’m fascinated by it. I don’t think I understand how half of it works. I’ve always stayed away. I’m the guy who hung onto his Betamax years after they went away. I’m old-fashioned when it comes to that, so I’m still not on Twitter.
When my wife went to work on FX’s “Tyrant” in Morocco and then in Turkey, I joined Instagram so I could see how she was doing and communicate with her thousands of miles away. Plus she could see what I was up to.
If it wasn’t for her living so far away, I probably would have never joined, but now I’m hooked.
WAMG: Moviefone wrote an article over the summer on who they would cast in a WEEKEND AT BERNIE’S remake. The film recently celebrated it’s 25th anniversary.
They’d like to see Bradley Cooper cast in Andrew McCarthy’s role and Kevin Hart in the part you played. Sounds funny. What do you think?
JS: (laughs) That makes a lot of sense. I can see the connection!

DreamWorks Studios announced today that three-time Tony Award winner and two-time Olivier Award winner Mark Rylance has been cast as the title character in THE BFG.
Steven Spielberg will direct the adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved classic children’s novel. Published in 1982, “The BFG” tells the tale of a young girl, the Queen of England and a benevolent giant known as the BFG, who set out on an adventure to capture the evil, man-eating giants who have been invading the human world.
“As I witnessed on stage, Mark Rylance is a transformational actor,” said Steven Spielberg. “I am excited and thrilled that Mark will be making this journey with us to Giant Country. Everything about his career so far is about making the courageous choice and I’m honored he has chosen ‘The BFG’ as his next big screen performance.”
Luke Kelly, Managing Director of the Roald Dahl Literary Estate and Roald Dahl’s grandson, said, “We are ecstatic at this choice. Mark is incredibly talented, one of the great British actors working today. I’ve had the privilege of seeing Mark perform, and the thought of watching him transform into ‘the only nice and jumbly Giant in Giant Country’ is, as The BFG himself might say, absolutely phizz-whizzing.”
Mark Rylance is currently working with Steven Spielberg on the Untitled Cold War Spy Thriller, which stars Tom Hanks.
His other upcoming projects include “The Gunman,” “Days and Nights,” and the lead role in the much-anticipated BBC adaptation of “Wolf Hall.” Rylance’s three Tony Awards were for his roles in “Boeing Boeing,” “Jerusalem” and Twelfth Night.” He earned his two Olivier Awards for his roles in “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Jerusalem.” He has appeared in such films as “The Other Boleyn Girl” and “Angels and Insects.” Rylance is represented by Hamilton Hodell and Peikoff Mahan Law Office.
DreamWorks acquired the rights to the book in 2010 after Kathleen Kennedy brought it to the company. Melissa Mathison, who last teamed with Spielberg and Kennedy on “E.T.,” has written the screenplay. Spielberg, Frank Marshall and Sam Mercer will produce while Kennedy, John Madden and Michael Siegel are on board as Executive Producers. Kristie Macosko Krieger and Adam Somner are Co-Producers.
Spielberg will begin production on “The BFG” in early 2015 and it will open in U.S. theaters on July 1, 2016.
The Walt Disney Company is distributing the film in the U.S. and select international territories while Mister Smith Entertainment is handling distribution in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. DreamWorks’ partner, Reliance, will distribute the film in India.
The movie is an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax, a plus-sized inflatable robot, and young robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada. When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo, Hiro and his friends thrust into action as high-tech heroes called “Big Hero 6.”
