Watch The First Trailer For Jon Favreau’s THE JUNGLE BOOK – In theatres April 15, 2016

THE JUNGLE BOOK

“The bare necessities of life
Will come to you
They’ll come to you!”

See the first trailer for Disney’s live-action film, THE JUNGLE BOOK.

Directed by Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”), based on Rudyard Kipling’s timeless stories and inspired by Disney’s classic animated film, THE JUNGLE BOOK is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self-discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray).

Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johansson), a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie (voice of Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire.

Ingrid Bergman in GASLIGHT Saturday Morning at The Hi-Pointe

gaslightheader
“It isn’t here, you must have dreamed you put it there. Are you suggesting that this is a knife I hold in my hand? Have you gone mad, my husband?”

gaslight-2

GASLIGHT plays at The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, MO 63117) September 19th  at 10:30am as part of their Classic Film Series

Greetings again from the darkness! Husbands were surely disliked in the 1940’s, at least by writers of movies! There is no shortage of films depicting the villainous husband targeting the unsuspecting and defenseless wife. A couple years prior to GASLIGHT we had SUSPCION, and a couple years after, we had NOTORIOUS. The latter also features Ingrid Bergman who won her first Oscar for GASLIGHT, one of the more atmospheric of the psychological thrillers.

gaslight7f
GASLIGHT is based on the Patrick Hamilton play Angel Street, which will be performed live, on stage at St. Louis’ own REP Theater Oct 14 thru Nov 8. For details about showtimes and tickets at The Rep, go HERE

GASLIGHT was made in 1944 and features terrific lead performances by Ms. Bergman and Charles Boyer, a role quite against type for France’s romantic leading man. Joseph Cotten delivers a solid (and nice) supporting role as the interested Scotland Yard detective, and making her screen debut is an 18 year old Angela Lansbury (yes this movie is now 71 years old).

gaslight-3
Mr. Boyer is quite convincing and creepy as the despicable husband out to convince his bride that she is slipping into insanity. The psychological abuse is painful to watch, and the art/set direction provides such perfect decor that we share the claustrophobia and entrapment with Bergman’s Paula. This audience connection allows for a most effective comeuppance or revenge scene that is simply delicious.

There was actually a mostly unsuccessful UK film version in 1940, but it doesn’t stand up to this expert production from director George Cukor. Mr. Cukor is the legendary director behind such classics as LITTLE WOMEN, THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, and MY FAIR LADY. GASLIGHT received 7 Oscar nominations and in addition to Ms. Bergman’s win, it also took home the statue for Best Art Direction. The film, Cukor and Boyer all lost out to that year’s big winner GOING MY WAY. Not many films have a psychology term named after them … here’s hoping you are never a victim of “gaslighting”.

TURBO KID – Midnights This Weekend at The Hi-Pointe

“This is my gnome stick!”

TURBO KID screens midnights this Friday and Saturday Night (September 18th and 19th) at newly-refurbished The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave, St. Louis) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse

turbomaxresdefault

Destroy the Brain’s Late Night Grindhouse series usually features cult and horror classics from the ‘70s and ‘80s but around once a year, a new movie makes its premiere at the monthly midnight show. This weekend, the Late Night Grindhouse pick is TURBO KID, which I have not seen but is described like this: “In a post-apocalyptic future, The Kid, a young solitary scavenger obsessed with comic books must face his fears and become a reluctant hero when he meets a mysterious girl named Apple. Despite their efforts to keep to themselves, Zeus, the sadistic and self-proclaimed leader of the Wasteland, plagues The Kid and Apple. Armed with little more than blind faith and an ancient turbocharged weapon,The Kid learns of justice and friendship and embarks on an incredible journey to rid the Wasteland of evil and save the girl of his dreams.” I have seen T IS FOR TURBO, the 5-minute short that the feature is based on, and if the feature captures half the insanity of the blood-drenched short, The Late Night Grindhouse crowd is in for a wild, gory treat.

Turbo-Kid4

Watch the short T IS FOR TURBO here:

So far, the critics have been impressed with TURBO KID:

Blake Goble of Consequence of Sound wrote:

“TURBO KID captures the wildly discordant dreams of any budding movie lover when they were 10, creating one of the funniest works of sandbox cinema made to date. Turbo Kid is here to play, and he’s loads of fun.”

Emma Simmonds at The List says TURBO KID is:

“Lovingly assembled, fist-pumping fun – a treat for big kids who like their triumph-over-adversity drenched in buckets of blood.”

Linda Barnard at The Toronto Star says:

“With nods to Mad Max and a fun synth soundtrack, TURBO KID packs plenty of retro affection and loopy fun”

Don’t miss TURBO KID when it screens this weekend (September 18th and 19th) at The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse midnight series.

WAMG Interview: David Oyelowo – Star of SELMA and CAPTIVE

Captive-2015-Movie-Poster

At the age of 24, David Oyelowo brought his regal bearing to the stage, where he became the first black actor to portray King Henry VI in The Royal Shakespeare Company’s 2001 productions of Shakespeare’s trilogy of plays about the king. More recently, he has made a name for himself by taking on American film roles. He played Martin Luther King Jr. in the Oscar-nominated film SELMA, a civil rights activist in THE BUTLER, a villain in RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, and a member of the Tuskeegee Airmen in RED TAILS.

In his most recent film CAPTIVE, Oyelowo shows his range by taking on another true life character. Brian Nichols is known for his escape and killing spree in the Atlanta, Georgia area in 2005. CAPTIVE is a thrilling drama about the spiritual collision of two broken lives. When Brian Nichols took recovering meth addict Ashley Smith (played in the film by Kate Mara) hostage in her own apartment, she turned for guidance to Rick Warren’s inspirational best-seller, The Purpose Driven Life, sharing the book with the desperate killer.

CAPTIVE

David Oyelowo was in town promoting CAPTIVE and We Are Movie Geeks sat down and asked him some questions about his career, his new film, and his religious faith.

Interview conducted by Tom Stockman September 3rd, 2015

We Are Movie Geeks: Did you have any second thoughts about playing Brian Nichols?

David Oyelowo: I did because I know what it costs me to play these roles. You can’t phone that in. My job is an actor is to fully inhabit the character and when I say that cost, it’s that a character like Brian Nichols, unlike Dr. King, someone I hugely admire and was honored to get to play him, did not have the same draw for obvious reasons. But my job was the same in that the job of an actor is to not judge the character. You have to understand what they do and why they’re doing it so you have to function as a three-dimensional human being that people can’t believe.

WAMG: Were you able to meet Brian Nichols?

DO: No, the nature of his prison sentence means that he cannot have access. But I did meet his mother and that was very intense, as you can imagine. The interesting thing about meeting her was that, even 10 years on, she can’t believe that this is her life and that that was her son. It’s still reverberating for that family.

captfeatr1

WAMG: Was there much footage of Brian Nichols for you to study?

DO: Yes, of the trial mainly, not beforehand. My primary source for getting under the skin of Brian was Ashley really. She remembered this event as if it had happened yesterday and she was on set with us quite a lot of the shoot.

WAMG: Did she have much influence on the shoot? Did she make any changes?

DO: She had influence. Not from a creative point of view but more from a factual point of view. I was very keen, because I could not speak to Brian, to make sure that what we were doing felt true, like it was authentic to the experience. It was one of those stories where there is no need to embellish anything. Literally it played like a movie. When you think about the fact that Brian Nichols killed those people, then it was a 45 minute drive to Duluth to go to this apartment complex, and he found his way specifically into her apartment, you couldn’t write to that. So for us it was about sticking to the true story and that was primarily her function for us while we were shooting the film.

captiveom

WAMG: Do you think your job is an actor with a role like this is to instill sympathy? Brian is introduced killing three people in cold blood, so the sympathy level starts out at zero. Were you trying to raise that sympathy with the audience?

DO: One of the toughest things for me was to make sure that not in any way was this supposed to feel like an exoneration of what he did on that day, but the fact remains that the during those hours, Ashley Smith attributes him with part of why she gained her life back. When he held a gun to her head and told her to take the meth, a drug that she had been a slave to for so long, and she said no, the way she describes it is that she felt God Took over Brian Nichols and said “Do you want to live or do you want to die?, turn away from this thing and take hold of life.” So, regardless of if you’re coming from a faith point of view or not, something miraculous happened here. Something that on paper shouldn’t have. That is something that can only happen, I think, when a degree of humanity is shed between these two people. So yes, the idea at the beginning of the movie is to have him be cold blooded and one of the things that I really struggled with was that you have a guy with no shirt on, a very muscular man, with two guns running around Atlanta. This is the kind of guy we normally think of as an action hero in movies, so the toughest thing was how to make him not seem like Jason Statham them or Jason Bourne. I wouldn’t want to see him as a human being, especially if he did what he did to someone in my family. So my job is to imbue him with a degree of humanity and take a look at these two people. Ashley Smith was a drug addict who had lost custody of her daughter. Her husband had died in a drug-related incident. She was someone you could discard to the scrapheap, But seeing these two broken people together making choices that took them away from the deadly path that they were both on – that can only be born out of humanity.

WAMG: Were you familiar with The Purpose-Drive Life before you got involved in this project?

DO: Yes, I had read it before I knew about this incident and it’d been a very meaningful book to me personally as a Christian. The thing I got for from it is that God’s purpose for my life is way bigger than my purpose for my own life. And that is an extraordinary thing, especially for a pretty ambitious guy like me. And I think that applies here especially for Ashley Smith. She had watched the news that day and had seen this guy running around Atlanta and then at 2 o’clock in the morning, he’s in her apartment. When he broke in she thought this was God’s way of telling her that she deserved death.

WAMG: In The Purpose-Drive Life author Rick Waren says that the great tragedy is not death but life without purpose. Ashley Smith escaped death, so that applies to her. Brian Nichols escaped death too by the jury not giving him the death penalty, so what do you think his purpose is?

DO: I’m a believer in life beyond this life and I think that his purpose is to embrace the fact that he has run out of credit here on earth, but beyond this life there is hope for him. I believe that God is a redemptive God. A God of forgiveness. Ashley was stopped in her journey just before it was the point of no return. But here we are talking about a movie based on her life. That is purpose that came out of that very dark situation. She regained custody of her daughter. She remarried and had a couple of more children. She is now a spokeswoman for Celebrate Recovery. She’s helping people recover from the same addictions that she had. Of course it’s more difficult to find the purpose about what Brian did but at the end of the day, she somehow stopped him in his tracks. Here’s a white woman who understandably should’ve been terrified of this big black guy that broke into her apartment. She made him pancakes. She read a book to him. I was with Brian’s mother when she thanked Ashley for making pancakes for her son which is an extraordinary thing for a mother to say but only a mother would say that. So I think there’s purpose in all of that really.

WAMG: You’re very open about your Christian faith which is kind of rare in Hollywood. Do you ever find that that is an impediment in getting roles? Do you worry about that, or do you care?

DO: I don’t worry about that because I think the only time you should worry is if you are inauthentic. I like to think that the life I lead chimes with the choices I make and who I am. If that’s the case, ultimately people can’t discredit you. I think if you go up and get awards and thank the Lord when you’re doing it, and the next moment you’re getting a DUI, then I think that’s when it’s just intolerable. I try to be authentic in terms of what I do and who I am and ultimately I try to let the work do the talking. I haven’t found it to be something that people resist. I’m sure there are people that know that I’m a person of faith and that may make them feel like they don’t want to work with me and that’s fine as well. There are plenty of people that do.

Rocky is back!

Sylvester Stallone is Rocky Balboa and Michael B. Jordan is Adonis Johnson in the new trailer for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema’s exciting upcoming drama CREED.

Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa.

Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer. Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo—the fierce rival who became his closest friend. Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring.

With Rocky in his corner, it isn’t long before Adonis gets his own shot at the title…but can he develop not only the drive but also the heart of a true fighter, in time to get into the ring?

CREED also stars Tessa Thompson (“Selma,” “Dear White People”) as Bianca, a local singer-songwriter who becomes involved with Adonis; Phylicia Rashad (Lifetime’s “Steel Magnolias”) as Mary Anne Creed, Apollo’s widow; and English pro boxer and former three-time ABA Heavyweight Champion Anthony Bellew as boxing champ “Pretty” Ricky Conlan.

Ryan Coogler directs from a screenplay he wrote with Aaron Covington, based on characters from the “Rocky” series written by Sylvester Stallone.

Joining Coogler behind the scenes are director of photography Maryse Alberti (“The Wrestler”) and costume designers Emma Potter (“Song One”) and Antoinette Messam (“Orphan”), as well as his “Fruitvale Station” team: editors Michael P. Composer Tom Holkenborg Creates A Haunting Score For BLACK MASS

11011949_10153534593476668_2942748438766640318_o

Three-time Oscar nominee Johnny Depp stars as notorious mobster Whitey Bulger in the drama BLACK MASS, from director Scott Cooper (CRAZY HEART). The film explores how a deal between ruthless gangster Whitey Bulger and FBI Agent John Connolly enabled Bulger to expand his criminal empire with complete impunity, as Connolly – blinded by his own ambition – shielded him from investigation, ignoring the rising body count.

Cooper has said, “I wanted to explore the bonds of brotherhood and the bonds of loyalty, but also the unbridled ambition, avarice and hubris that drove these people. It was important to me not to simply tell a story about criminals that happened to be human, but to tell a story about humans, reprehensible or not, who happened to be criminals. And never losing sight of the fact that, in Boston in the 1970s and `80s, certain lawmen and criminals were virtually indistinguishable.”

To achieve that tone musically, Cooper teamed with composer Tom Holkenborg on the scoring stage.

Holkenborg recently created the score for George Miller’s blockbuster MAD MAX: FURY ROAD and Jaume Collet-Serra’s RUN ALL NIGHT.  He is also scoring a wide range of upcoming films, including the reimagining of the action thriller POINT BREAK, the crime comedy KILL YOUR FRIENDS, and Zack Snyder’s much-anticipated action adventure BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE.

WBL207_153.tif

While writing the score for BLACK MASS, Holkenborg recalls, “When I saw the movie, I literally came out with sweat on my hands and my knees were shaking. It was very impressive and had an enormous impact on me.”

“I knew that was a good start,” Cooper smiles. “He said, ‘Let me go away and write something, and I’ll be back to you in one week.’ So he comes back in a week with 48 minutes of music that absolutely crushed me. It was gorgeous. It had all the emotion and the pathos that I wanted and this unsettling feeling that would ultimately course through the narrative. And born out of that suite, Tom crafted a beautifully evocative score that helped give the film its shape.”

“The first thing I thought about was what I was going to do for Whitey,” says Holkenborg. “He’s such an evil person, so incredibly dark, I wanted to write a theme that would underscore the darkness but also convey the multiple facets of the character. What I came up with is a reoccurring pattern in the low frequencies, heard through piano and cello.”

“I think the music really helps take the audience inside the unpredictable and fractured psyche of Whitey Bulger,” Cooper observes.

The composer created a rising and falling melody to serve as the theme for John Connolly. He illustrates, “His theme comes from a low note and goes to a high note that sounds like it’s reaching to go even higher but never can, and then goes back to low. It’s like he wants so badly to climb up and then something pulls him back down, and as the movie progresses that becomes more and more intense.”

Connolly’s theme also features a cello motif, which “actually fits multiple personalities in the film. In fact, the cello is the main instrument in the score,” Holkenborg relates.

“The cello is one of my favorite instruments,” Cooper says. “It has an extremely mournful but powerful quality. The music is at times propulsive with a full orchestra, other times with a lush string section. But there are moments, unnerving moments, where it’s just a very small selection of strings or a solo cello.”

Another instrument featured in the score is the pipe organ. “It just made sense; I mean the movie is called ‘Black Mass,’” justifies Holkenborg, who bought an organ specifically to use on the film. “It’s a beautiful instrument and it was nice to have with all its sound capacities. And it was great that Scott embraced it because the point is to serve the ideas the director has for the film.

“With this movie,” he continues, “we agreed restraint was key. But within that range, I had all the creative freedom I could possibly get from a director. I tried to give him something that was out of the ordinary—a little left of center—and he was very welcoming to the emotionally stirring sounds that I felt we needed for the characters in the film.”

“Tom is an incredibly diverse composer who fully comprehended the doomed relationship between Whitey Bulger and John Connolly and a city that was forever scarred by Bulger’s exploits,” Cooper reflects.
