THE PARALLAX VIEW Soundtrack by Michael Small Coming May 7th

THE PARALLAX VIEW SOUNDTRACK by MICHAEL SMALL will be available Coming Friday May 7th from Cinema Paradiso Recordings on limited edition color vinyl and deluxe bundles.

Michael Small’s score raises the spectre of all that is hidden in American history, and superimposes them in a collage that reveals itself to be the unseen hands that shape it.” – Jim O’Rourke

Cinema Paradiso Recordings is proud to announce the release of the soundtrack to the motion picture ‘The Parallax View’, on vinyl for the first time ever, this coming May 7th 2021. Based on the book by Loren Singer, The Parallax View is directed and produced by Alan J Pakula as the second installment of his Political Paranoia trilogy – alongside Klute (1971) and All the President’s Men (1976). With cinematography by Gordon Willis (The Godfather trilogy, Annie Hall) and starring Warren Beatty, this political thriller from 1974 is perhaps even more relevant today than it was back then. The legendary score by composer Michael Small is regarded as a benchmark in the sound of paranoia thrillers that dominated cinema in the 1970s, with revered film critic Pauline Kael hailing the film as essential for all fans of the genre. Now, 47 years later, the soundtrack newly remastered by Bob Weston, will finally be available to own on vinyl. The single LP, deluxe gatefold limited edition in coloured vinyl includes liner notes with two essays by Scott Bettencourt and Alexander Kaplan (of Film Score Monthly), which provide a fascinating insight into the making of the film and an analysis of the score. The CPR edition of The Parallax View soundtrack includes for the first time the infamous brainwashing scene, an influence on countless films and TV shows over the years. Notably, most recently with the Watchmen series and shows Mr Robot and Homecoming even using the music from the film. To be able to include the dialogue of the brainwashing scene – the disembodied voice from Warren Beatty’s “Parallax Test” – was fundamental to the label’s decision to release the soundtrack on vinyl. In order to include the segment, they needed authorization from Paramount and the original voice actor. With permission granted from Paramount, they scoured the film credits but gained no insight into whom the mysterious voice belonged. Researching every other name on the credits hoping to find a contact that might know who the actor was, they settled on Jon Boorstin (Alan Pakula’s assistant on The Parallax View) who they duly contacted. Jon replied immediately saying, “…And yes, I know who that actor is, who welcomes Warren so mellifluously. It was Alan Pakula. He did a temp track, and we got used to it, and never replaced it.“ Thanks to this never-before-revealed information, they were put in touch with Hannah Pakula – Alan’s widow – and obtained permission to use the dialogue which can be heard before the Parallax Test at the start of side B.

Boorstin states, “The Parallax View embodies a particularly paranoid moment for America, when assassination wounds were still fresh and the President’s bungling burglars were running him out of the White House. Michael Small’s music beautifully captures our hope, our dread, and our nostalgia for truer values. In the Parallax Test sequence, he brilliantly seduces the assassin in all of us. Watching this today, wrapped in Michael’s music, what was once wild fantasy feels at least as credible as the pronouncements of our Kool-Aid drinking Congressmen.”

he Parallax View Soundtrack will be available in limited edition red, blue or white vinyl of just 500 each. There is also a super limited edition white vinyl Abraham Lincoln ‘card stunt’ sleeve version. Limited to just 200 copies world wide, each copy comes with a removable Abraham Lincoln sticker placed over the “card stunt” depiction on the original cover. The label is also partnering with Criterion, who released the Blu-ray in North America in February, by offering a bundle to US customers of the Blu-Ray plus the limited edition Abraham Lincoln cover vinyl LP for $73 (US only). Finally, there will be 5 extra-super limited edition packages available which includes the Abraham Lincoln cover with white vinyl, a Criterion Blu-ray, and a First Edition copy of The Parallax View book by Loren Singer. One of these packages will be given away on Cinema Paradiso’s Instagram (click for details). Formats Available

Listen To “TECHNO SYNDROME 2021″ Track From Composer Benjamin Wallfisch’s MORTAL KOMBAT Score – Soundtrack Drops April 16

WaterTower Music has announced the April 16 release of the soundtrack to New Line Cinema’s explosive new movie “Mortal Kombat,” which brings to life the intense action of the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory, pitting the all-time, fan-favorite champions against one another in the ultimate, no-holds-barred, gory battle that pushes them to their very limits. The film is helmed by award-winning Australian commercial filmmaker Simon McQuoid, marking his feature directorial debut, is set for release nationwide in theaters on April 23 and will be available in the U.S. on HBO Max in 4K UHD, HDR10, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos on supported devices for 31 days from theatrical release. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The Mortal Kombat (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) contains all new score by Golden Globe-, Emmy-, and Grammy-nominated composer Benjamin Wallfisch (IT and IT Chapter 2, Shazam, Blade Runner: 2049 [w/ Hans Zimmer]).

The first single from the album was released. “Techno Syndrome 2021 (Mortal Kombat)” is composer Benjamin Wallfisch’s musical homage to the music, fans, and enduring lineage of Mortal Kombat. The track was produced and performed by Wallfisch and mixed and Mastered by Tom Norris (Skrillex, Gaga, Zedd).

Director Simon McQuoid discussed working with Wallfisch on the score and on “Techno Syndrome 2021”. “Ben and I both knew that we needed to use the classic Immortals track ‘Techno Syndrome’ as source material for the entire score of Mortal Kombat. But along with that we knew that an updated elevated version of the song also needed to be created. And Ben certainly delivered, I am so excited by this new 2021 version of the track, when I first heard it, it blew my mind. Actually, Ben kind of blew my mind on a daily basis through the making of this film, so we can all thank Benjamin Wallfisch for his genius and passion in creating ‘Techno Syndrome 2021’.

Benjamin Wallfisch further elaborated. “When I was invited to come on board ‘Mortal Kombat,’ I was very aware of the responsibility that comes with scoring a franchise so deeply embedded in pop culture and with such a passionate fanbase. My first question was what can we do with ‘Techno Syndrome,’ a piece of music so much part of the DNA of the game and the original movies? What motifs could be reinvented and blown up to a full-scale symphonic sound world in the score, and might there be room for a full reinvention of the whole song as an EDM single in 2021? A huge thank you to The Immortals for giving us their blessing to reimagine their classic track in this way, as a celebration of the world of Mortal Kombat and its fans, and of the uplifting power of Electronic Dance Music, which the original did so much to light the fuse of 30 years ago.”

The soundtrack release date is set for April 16 and features 24 tracks by Wallfisch, who interpreted the film’s themes and emphasized the story’s hard-driving, visceral action through his music. Fans will be thrilled to hear the composer’s heart-pumping score, which includes themes for such characters as Lord Raiden, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Cole Young, Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, and Kung Lao, among others, and epic battle themes from the film, including “Kano v Reptile” and “Sub-Zero v Cole Young.”

From New Line Cinema comes the explosive new movie “Mortal Kombat,” bringing to life the intense action of the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory, pitting the all-time, fan-favorite champions against one another in the ultimate, no-holds-barred, gory battle that pushes them to their very limits. The film is helmed by award-winning Australian commercial filmmaker Simon McQuoid, marking his feature directorial debut, and produced by James Wan, Todd Garner, McQuoid and E. Bennett Walsh.

In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Sorcerer Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt him down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies from Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

The diverse international cast reflects the global nature of the brand, with talent spanning the worlds of film, television and martial arts. The ensemble includes Lewis Tan as Cole Young; Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade; Josh Lawson as Kano; Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden; Mehcad Brooks as Jax; Ludi Lin as Liu Kang; with Chin Han as Shang Tsung; Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero; and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion. Also featured are Max Huang as Kung Lao and Sisi Stringer as Mileena.

McQuoid directed from a screenplay by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham, from a story by Oren Uziel and Russo, based on the video game created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Victoria Palmeri, Michael Clear, Jeremy Stein and Larry Kasanoff served as executive producers.

Bringing the hugely popular property to the big screen, McQuoid led a team of Australian and U.S. filmmakers, including director of photography Germain McMicking, production designer Naaman Marshall, editors Dan Lebental and Scott Gray, visual effects supervisor Chris Godfrey, costume designer Cappi Ireland and fight choreographer Chan Griffin. The music is by Benjamin Wallfisch.

New Line Cinema Presents an Atomic Monster/Broken Road Production, “Mortal Kombat.” The film is set for release nationwide in theaters and will be available in the U.S. on HBO Max in 4K UHD, HDR10, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos on supported devices for 31 days from theatrical release. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

“Mortal Kombat” is rated R for strong bloody violence and language throughout, and some crude references.

Lorne Balfe’s JUNGLELAND Original Motion Picture Score Available Now

The Original Motion Picture Score for JUNGLELAND by Award winning composer Lorne Balfe is available now.

Lorne Balfe (Mission Impossible: Fallout (INTERVIEW), The Lego Batman Movie, Churchill, HBO’s His Dark Materials) is a Grammy Award winning, EMMY and BAFTA nominated composer. Whether on an impossible mission, the heartbreak of the Queen, the perils of the cape crusade or the soul of a genius, Lorne Balfe creates a musical voice that reflects the characters and the stories that embody them. Originally from Inverness, Scotland, Balfe has created music in virtually all genres and for all visual media with projects ranging from major studio to independent films, tentpole video game franchises, beloved animated feature films, critically acclaimed television series, and documentary features.

Produced by Romulus Entertainment in association with Scott Free Productions and Big Red Films, and directed and co-written by Max Winkler (Flower), JUNGLELAND is a love story between two brothers whose bond is tested as they hustle and scrape towards their slice of the American Dream. Stanley (Charlie Hunnam, “Sons of Anarchy”) and Lion (Jack O’Connell, Unbroken) are brothers struggling to stay relevant in the underground world of bare-knuckle boxing. When Stanley fails to pay back a dangerous crime boss (Jonathan Majors, “Lovecraft Country”), they’re forced to deliver an unexpected traveler (Jessica Barden, “The End of the F***ing World”) as they journey across the country for a high stakes fighting tournament. While Stanley trains Lion for the fight of his life, a series of events threaten to tear the brothers apart, but their love for one another and belief in a better life keep them going in this gripping drama that proves the family pulls no punches.

Lorne Balfe says,

“I wanted the score of Jungleland to reflect the way the characters see themselves. In our early conversations, I focused on conveying aspiration as timeless and complicated, which is why he shied away from anything that felt too modern or flat — acoustic guitars, anything synth. We wanted to use instruments that felt regal, that demanded your respect. The style of music that would play in a dreamer like Stanley Kaminski’s head.
The style he would believe he and his brother Lion were owed. Climbing in and out of boarded up windows to their foreclosed palace, clocking in and out at the factory job, making their way from the cramped Italian kitchen to a windowless basement.”

Director Max Wrinkler says,

“We hoped to create a processional theme that was bigger and richer than their circumstances appeared to be on the surface. Stanley saw himself and Lion as kings, even if no one else did, so why not have a score that matched that? In those blue sky discussions, Lorne and I spoke endlessly about Orlando Gibbons, Thomas Tallis, and my personal favorite William Byrd. Music that was made to be played in royal courts. Music that was equal parts comical as well as profoundly sad and mournful. With these inspirations in mind, we assembled a 32 piece brass and woodwind band in Vienna to record a score that reflected the nobility of boxing and approached Stanley and Lion’s world with a formal appreciation. Queensbury rules. We wanted to introduce a sense of civility and humanity to the fray. We favored fugal horns, oboes, and strings to orchestrate dreams and hope beyond boundaries — the longing and heartbreak of it — and the brothers’ complete, but somehow still-searching, love for one another.”

Listen To ARCHIVE (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) With Music by Academy Award-winning Composer Steven Price

“Set in 2038, “Archive” convincingly jumbles eras of futurism, as somewhat quaint old-school robotics give way to more uncannily sinuous forms. “Gravity” composer Steven Price’s score, meanwhile, blends sparse strings and glassy synths, reflecting the marriage of human touch and metallic industrial sheen in George’s mad-scientist meddlings.

Milan Records announces the release of ARCHIVE (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) with music by Academy Award®-winning composer STEVEN PRICE (Gravity, Baby Driver, Suicide Squad). Available everywhere now, the album features music written by Price for director Gavin Rothery’s sci-fi film starring Theo James.

From Vertical Entertainment, ARCHIVE is available now via virtual cinema, VOD and Digital.

Of the soundtrack, composer STEVEN PRICE says, “My favourite projects are the ones where the story leads me into new musical areas, and exploring the world of Archive, a movie where technology and humanity meet in a near future Kyoto, proved to be a brilliant challenge. I’d been looking for the opportunity to create a largely electronic score for the first time in a long while and the story of George Almore, his secretive AI project and the mysterious Archive let me do just that… The music follows the developments in George’s work as it progresses, and as he gets closer to achieving his hopes and dreams it was a lot of fun to blur the lines between the electronic and organic, trying to find the sound of his creations. From the moment I read writer / director Gavin Rothery’s ambitious script I wanted to be involved, and throughout the process he proved to be a great collaborator and true supporter of music. I’m looking forward to people experiencing the movie Gavin has created, and it was a real pleasure to be a part of it.”

“Archive was always going to need a killer score, but when I was writing the script, I had no idea how that was all going to happen,” says the film’s director and writer GAVIN ROTHERY, adding, “I wanted the film to be big and cinematic. But I also needed it to feel tight and personal. I wanted some parts to be epic and bold, but others intimate and close. Some parts needed energy and power but others needed space and quiet. Technology needed to fuse with humanity. And it all needed to feel unified and whole. Basically, as is probably true with most directors, I wanted everything. Steven gave me everything. He delivered the perfect score to Archive. I’m not quite sure how he does what he does. Maybe he’s a secret telepath. Maybe he’s from the future. Maybe he’s a robot. There is one thing that I am absolutely certain of is that he most definitely is. The best.”

2038: George Almore is working on a true human-equivalent AI. His latest prototype is almost ready. This sensitive phase is also the riskiest. Especially as he has a goal that must be hidden at all costs: being reunited with his dead wife.

Composer Benjamin Wallfisch’s Compelling Score For THE INVISIBLE MAN LP Drops On March 4 – Listen To The Tracks Now

Back Lot Music has digitally released the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to Universal Pictures’ The Invisible Man, a Blumhouse/Goalpost production directed by Leigh Whannell (Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3) from his screenplay and screen story. The film’s original score is by GRAMMY® and Golden Globe-nominated composer Benjamin Wallfisch (Blade Runner 2049, IT). A vinyl release will be available March 4 through Mondo featuring two 180g discs housed inside a gatefold sleeve and an etching on side 4. The Invisible Man will be theatrically released in the U.S. on February 28th.

Starring Emmy Award winner Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), The Invisible Man is a terrifying modern tale of obsession inspired by Universal’s classic Monster character.

Trapped in a violent, controlling relationship with a wealthy and brilliant scientist, Cecilia Kass (Moss) escapes in the dead of night and disappears into hiding. But when Cecilia’s abusive ex, Adrian Griffin (Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House), commits suicide and leaves her a generous portion of his vast fortune, Cecilia suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of eerie coincidences turn lethal, threatening the lives of those she loves, Cecilia’s sanity begins to unravel as she desperately tries to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.

Discussing his approach to the film’s score, Wallfisch said, “It was about using silence rhythmically. When there is music, the gestures and sonic attitude are sometimes so left-field and extreme that you almost don’t trust the score’s absence when it’s not there. As a kind of analogue to the presence of Adrian Griffin [the Invisible Man] in the film.”

Wallfisch continued, “Also, the orchestral instrumentation is deliberately constrained to strings- only so that the musicians were pushed to their max, without the support of a full orchestra. That choice was also an homage to one of my heroes, Bernard Herrmann and one of his masterpieces, the Psycho score.”

As the film progresses, Cecilia (Moss) devolves into questioning her every move, then grows into her power. The composer reflected that journey musically as well. “’Cecilia’s Theme,’ a simple melody for cello and strings, was written to be a musical reminder of her own sanity, as everything unravels around her,” Wallfisch said. “You only hear it a handful of times in the movie, at key turning points in the story. There is also a piano motif that recurs a few times, something building and insistent, meant to portray the way she still manages to hold on to who she really is, against all the odds, ultimately triumphing.”

Because Wallfisch was tasked with creating musical space for an antagonist who is literally not present, the composer had to factor into his choices for Adrian/the Invisible Man some elements that he’d not previously considered for a villain: “Rather than a melodic theme, we needed a signature sound for Adrian—something that just creeps up on you. The sonic for the Invisible Man himself is entirely electronic, and when it goes full tilt, we tried to push things as hard as they could possibly go.”

Disney’s The Little Mermaid 30th Anniversary at The Hollywood Bowl

On Friday, May 18th, WAMG went under the sea for the 30th Anniversary “Live to Film Concert Experience” of Disney’s The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl.

There was no shortage of star power as some big names took the stage during the screening to sing all of the fan-favorite numbers. Lea Michele (as Ariel), Harvey Fierstein (as Ursula), Cheech Marin (as Chef Louis), Peter Gallagher (as King Triton), Leo Gallo (as Prince Eric), Ken Page (as Sebastian) and special guest Alan Menken, who performed the songs from the Oscar and Grammy-winning score as the film played on the Bowl’s movie screen accompanied by a full, live orchestra. Not gonna lie, we almost wept, when the beating-heart-of-Disney-musicals himself, Alan Menken walked out on stage and sat at the piano for a sweet rendition of “Part of Your World.”

The coolest part of the evening was the feeling of an underwater night out at the “dive-in,” in addition to the feature film, the show included a full program of aquatically-themed previews of coming attractions, nostalgic animated snack bar commercials, and the 1938 Silly Symphony cartoon “Merbabies” featuring the world premiere of a live original score composed and performed by 17 year-old piano sensation, Emily Bear. Fans were also invited to participate in a Little Mermaid themed costume contest and unique photo opportunities to get them in the spirit before the show.

Additionally, the award-winning creative studio Mousetrappe  set up state-of-the-art projection mapping technology to project newly created and breathtaking animated “living scenery” onto the façade of the Hollywood Bowl, making the event an evolving extension of the beloved film and score.

It truly was a magical night under the sea (and stars!) and no one does that better then Disney.

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Drops May 24

WaterTower Music, in conjunction with Sparks & Shadows, is excited to announce the May 24 release of the soundtrack to the highly anticipated next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic Monsterverse, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. An epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history, the film hits theaters worldwide beginning May 31, 2019.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features new music composed for the motion picture by Emmy® and BAFTA Award winner Bear McCreary (10 Cloverfield Lane, TV’s The Walking Dead). The 26-track album includes the song “Godzilla (Feat. Serj Tankian),” the composer’s interpretation of Blue Öyster Cult’s classic anthem created in collaboration with Serj Tankian (System Of A Down) and musicians Brendon Small, Bryan Beller, and Gene Hoglan who form the rhythm section of Dethklok from TV’s Metalocalypse.

McCreary’s diverse score is as formidable as the characters colliding on the big screen in the upcoming film. In his first creative meeting with the composer, Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty used the term “Monster Opera” when describing the magnitude and importance of the score to the storytelling. McCreary rose to meet the enormous challenge, and delivered on a grand-scale, beginning with a full symphonic orchestra and choir and infused with concussive sounds from a variety of artists. Incorporated into the score are the hypnotic chants of Japanese Buddhist monks; a powerful percussion ensemble; culturally diverse soloists from around the world; and the heroic guttural vocalizations of a Tokyo-based taiko ensemble, who perform traditional kakegoe with their voices instead of playing their drums. Also woven into the soundscape is an original text composed by McCreary, which was translated into ancient Babylonian and performed by the choir throughout the score.

The composer’s meticulous approach is apparent in his creation of character themes for the iconic monsters colliding on the big screen for the first time in the modern age in the new film, from all-new themes for Godzilla’s classic foes Ghidorah and Rodan to new interpretations of the beloved themes for Mothra and the mighty King of the Monsters, filtered through his own musical lens: “For Godzilla, I chose to incorporate and adapt the legendary Akira Ifukube’s iconic theme, and for Mothra, Yuji Koseki’s immortal ‘Mothra’s Song,’ both being classic themes from the franchise’s origins,” McCreary explained. “I hoped to form a connection between Ifukube’s uniquely brilliant style and the aesthetics of modern blockbusters.”

McCreary also composed all-new themes for the family at the center of the epic, world-spanning adventure, as well as the mysterious crypto-zoological agency Monarch.

Bear McCreary discussed the epic collaboration behind the song “Godzilla (Feat. Serj Tankian),” noting that the track is “perhaps the most audacious piece of music I have ever produced, jammed to the breaking point with orchestra, choir, taiko chanting, taiko drumming, heavy metal rhythm section, Gene Hoglan’s blistering double-kick drums, and Serj’s distinct vocals. It is complete musical madness!”

Director Michael Dougherty has long been a fan, adding: “I’ll never forget the moment I first heard Bear’s music in the epic reboot of Battlestar Galactica. It was bold, elegant and decisively different than the typical space opera scores of the day, evoking something ancient and deeply powerful.” The cue was called ‘The Shape of Things to Come,’” he continued. “And even then, I knew how meaningful the title was because I was determined to collaborate with him. And while it only took about 15 years, I couldn’t be happier that our first effort together is for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Bear has crafted something truly special that honors the history of the legendary kaiju but also adds new layers and a rich mythic spirit to Godzilla’s legacy. Long live the King.”

Following the global success of Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic Monsterverse: Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Directed by Michael Dougherty, Godzilla: King of the Monsters stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown, with Ken Watanabe and Ziyi Zhang. Dougherty directed from a script he wrote with Zach Shields, story by Max Borenstein and Michael Dougherty & Zach Shields, based on the characters “Godzilla,” “King Ghidorah,” “Mothra” and “Rodan” owned and created by Toho Co., Ltd. The film was produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Brian Rogers, with Zach Shields, Barry Waldman, Hiro Matsuoka, Keiji Ota, Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira serving as executive producers, and Ali Mendes and Jay Ashenfelter co-producing for Legendary.

It will be distributed in 3D and 2D and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho; and in China, where it will be distributed by Legendary East.

Composer Steven Price Takes The Theme Park Experience To New Heights With WONDER PARK Score

June in a scene from the animated film, WONDER PARK by Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies © 2018 Paramount Animation, a Division of Paramount Pictures. All Rights Reserved.

Imagine a magical one-of-kind amusement park where gravity-defying rides thrill delighted crowds, the streets are with packed with colorful characters, and jaw-dropping attractions amaze visitors from all over the world. That’s exactly what 8-year-old math whiz and aspiring engineer June (voiced by Brianna Denski) has done. In the privacy of her bedroom, she and her mom (Jennifer Garner) have constructed Wonderland, a place where the carousel is made of airborne goldfish and the river rapids glow like 4th of July fireworks.

June has been building Wonderland for almost her entire young life, using her boundless imagination to create a park that will astound children of all ages. It’s run by chimpanzee impresario Peanut (Norbert Leo Butz), who creates a spectacular world of endless fun with a truly magic marker and the help of an animal staff inspired by June’s collection of stuffed animals. But when June’s mother becomes seriously ill, the girl abandons their creation, declaring herself finished with Wonderland forever. But the amusement park, it seems, is not yet finished with June. While wandering in the woods, she stumbles upon an enchanted clearing where Wonderland has come to life, along with her imaginary friends Boomer, the welcome bear (Ken Hudson Campbell); Steve, the safety specialist porcupine (John Oliver); Greta, the sensible boar (Mila Kunis); and maintenance beavers Cooper (Ken Jeong) and Gus (Kenan Thompson). But lately, a mysterious Darkness has descended over the park and, even more disturbingly, Peanut has gone missing.

With the park under attack by a horde of maniacally adorable Chimpanzombies, havoc and destruction reign. To save her brilliant creation, June sets out to find Peanut and uncover the mystery behind the Darkness before it destroys Wonderland forever.

An enchanting adventure that celebrates the power of family, imagination, teamwork and self-belief, Wonder Park is written and produced by André Nemec and Josh Appelbaum (Teenage Mutant Turtles franchise, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) from a story by Robert Gordon (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Men in Black II).

One of the important elements for the filmmakers was finding a score as inventive as June herself to highlight the drama, design and vision of their film. They enlisted Steven Price, the Academy Award -winning composer for director Alfonso Cuarón’s groundbreaking space-flight film Gravity, to create music that would inspire the same sense of wonder June has instilled in her creation. WONDER PARK opens in theatres March 15 and in our fourth interview with the composer, I recently spoke with Price about his latest film.

Audiences have heard Price’s scores on countless films. From a crime thriller movie (BABY DRIVER), a superhero movie (David Ayer’s SUICIDE SQUAD), a science fiction movie (GRAVITY – interview), a World War 2 movie (FURY – interview), and now his latest, WONDER PARK. “I’ve got young kids so it’s lovely to be able to work on something that they can pop into the studio to see what I’m working on, and this film is about imagination. It was so much fun to work on.” says Price. “I was dazzled by the amount of creativity that went into it. I tried to convert that feeling into music and immerse the audience in it. If we are in Zero-G Land, anything goes, so why should the music be conventional? I’m hoping the audience will feel like they are on the rides along with June.”

Price says he was keen to find a musical theme that would do justice to Wonderland and convey the excitement of being there. “It is the theme park of your dreams, the most incredibly exciting, friendly, imaginative place in the world,” he explains. “I used lots of bells and chimes and the whole thing feels really alive.” He adds, “there is a cue for “Fireworks Falls” that has the sounds of Fireworks. It’s a percussion track instead of a conventional orchestral cue.” Price says he went out on a cold November evening to a fireworks display to record the natural sounds of the explosions.

Wonder Park is also a story about a family facing uncertainty, so there was lots of potential for beautiful and emotional music as well. “It starts off being about June and her mom and the things they share,” says Price. “Their theme has a warm tone, but it passes from major to minor during the sadder moments. It guides us through the film as she works things out.”

Price, who had never scored an animated feature before, says he enjoyed the process of the medium. “One of the joys and challenges of animation is that there’s nothing in the frame that isn’t there for a reason,” he says. “My score has a certain structure and then I would add details as I noticed more and more things in the animation. The two things together became more than the sum of their parts.”

“To score an animated feature has always been an ambition of mine and  recording at Sony Studios in Los Angeles was great fun,” says Price. “I’ve always been obsessed with the form, from the British stop motion stuff showing on tv during my own childhood to classic Disney, Pixar and beyond, and, after becoming a father this became something I shared with my kids, enjoying what has been a golden period of animated films together.”

This Humpback whale is feeding off Cape Town in November, Cape Towns summer. These whales are well known to feed on krill in the southern ocean, but off Cape Towns west coast, these whales feed on other species such as Euphoarsiids (E. Lucens), Hyperiid amphipods (Themisto gaudichaudii) and Mantis shrimps.

In addition to WONDER PARK, Price also worked on the upcoming Netflix series “Our Planet”. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, this eight-part series will explore the unique and precious wonders of our natural world from the creators of the award-winning series Planet Earth. In partnership with World Wildlife Fund, Our Planet combines stunning photography and technology with an unprecedented, never-before-filmed look at the planet’s remaining wilderness areas and their animal inhabitants. The ambitious four-year project has been filmed in 50 countries across all the continents of the world, with over 600 members of crew capturing more than three and a half thousand filming days, and will focus on the breadth of the diversity of habitats around the world, from the remote Arctic wilderness and mysterious deep oceans to the vast landscapes of Africa and diverse jungles of South America.

Price says, “I couldn’t be more proud of that and was incredibly honored to be a part of it. It’s an amazing look at the state of the planet now and the challenges we face. The 8 parts take you the various environments and different parts of the earth and how everything connects. I hope people watch it and it makes a difference. It was huge passion project for everyone involved.”
