THE LAST DRAGON – with Taimak in Person Thursday Night at The Tivoli

THE LAST DRAGON screens this Thursday (May 26th) at the Tivoli (6350 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis, MO) with star Taimak in attendance! The event begins at 5:30pm and will be hosted by We Are Movie Geeks own Tom Stockman

The Varsity theater on Delmar (which now houses Vintage Vinyl) is where I first saw the crazy cult classic THE LAST DRAGON (aka BERRY GORDY’S THE LAST DRAGON) when it was new in 1985. It was a huge hit and played there for several weeks. If I could describe THE LAST DRAGON to someone who has never seen it, I’d say that it’s the essence of the 80s – kind of a weird, trend-chasing mash-up of MTV videos, Kung-Fu flicks, overacting, and beautiful women. It was like a Cannon film made by a different studio (and a Motown Production – Producer Berry Gordy was head of Motown at the time) and was full of music – a mixture of rock, rap, R&B and pop. THE LAST DRAGON told the story of a young man named Leroy Green (played by Taimak) who searches New York City for the “master” to obtain the final level of martial arts mastery known as ‘the glow’. Along the way, he must fight an evil martial arts expert and rescue a beautiful singer (Vanity) from an obsessed music promoter. Look for Chazz Palminteri and William H. Macy in early roles!

Now, lucky St. Louisans will have the chance to see THE LAST DRAGON on the big screen again – this time up the street from the old Varsity – at the Tivoli. Not only that, the film’s star Taimak, will be in attendance! Taimak has written his memoirs called “Taimak, The Last Dragon!” and he will be there selling and signing his book and will participate in a Q&A before a screening of the film. The event is this Thursday May 26^th. Doors open at 5:30. This is the national tour screening of THE LAST DRAGON. Taimak was only 19 years old when he starred in The Last Dragon. He was already a champion martial artist, a bouncer at New York City’s famous clubs, and a budding ladies’ man. In his book, you’ll follow Taimak’s inspirational, hilarious, shocking, eye-popping life story. “It’s a Chopper Baby!” PULP FICTION Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

“That’s thirty minutes away. I’ll be there in ten.”

PULP FICTION plays midnights this weekend (May 27^th and 28th) at the Tivoli (6350 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis, MO) as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.

I watch PULP FICTION every couple of years and it just gets better. The icy wit, the connoisseur soundtrack, the violence , the extended dialogue riffing, the trance-like unreality, the inspired karmic balance of the heroin scene and the adrenalin scene, the narrative switchbacks that allow John Travolta to finish the film both alive and dead, the spectacle of him being made to dance badly, but also sort of brilliantly …and above all else, the sheer excitement that Tarantino managed to conjure up in 1994. Today this touchstone of cool seems to extend its dangerous influence everywhere: movies, fiction, journalism, media, fashion, restaurants, you name it. Everyone has been trying to do irony and incorrectness since, but without Tarantino’s brilliance. Experience PULP FICTION on the big screen again when it plays this Friday and Saturday (May 27^th and 28^th).

MAD MAX – LIVE! Stage Play Coming to St. Louis in June

St. Louis Shakespeare’s The Magic Smoking Monkey Theatre adapts a cult film into an onstage farce once a year. Previous adaptions have included PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE, REEFER MADNESS, GLEN OR GLENDA, GAME OF THRONES, HARRY POTTER, and THE STAR WARS TRILOGY (!!). In 2011 they helped celebrate Vincentennial, the Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration with a stage presentation of one of the home town horror star’s classics: THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES in 3D, a sidesplitting, Pythonesque parody.

This year, those crazy Smoking Monkeys are presenting MAD MAX – a spoof of all four of those great Mel Gibson action movies (and that Tom Hardy one). Jason Statham’s Shark Thriller MEG Dives Into U.S. Theaters On March 2, 2018

Warner Bros. Pictures has set a March 2, 2018 U.S. release date for the new science fiction action thriller based on Steve Alten’s book, MEG.

The film will be co-financed by Flagship Entertainment; Gravity Pictures, a division of China Media Capital (CMC); and Warner Bros. Pictures. Gravity Pictures will distribute the film in China and Warner Bros. will distribute the film throughout the rest of the world.

Jon Turtletaub (the “National Treasure” movies, “Last Vegas”) will direct the film. The film stars Jason Statham (“Spy,” “Furious 7,” “The Expendables” films) and award-winning Chinese actress Fan Bingbing (“Buddha Mountain,” “Iron Man 3,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past”).

Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, Belle Avery and Colin Wilson are producing the film, with Wei Wayne Jiang, Barrie M. Osborne, Randy Greenberg and Gerald R. Molen serving as executive producers.

An international underwater observation program, led by Chinese scientists, is under attack by an unknown danger, and its deep-sea submersible lies disabled and trapped at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. With time running out, former Naval Captain and expert deep sea diver Jonas Taylor (Statham) is recruited by Dr. Zhang Suyin, lead oceanographer of the program, for what is likely a suicide mission. Years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying threat, which forced him to abort his mission and abandon half his crew, resulting in disgrace and a dishonorable discharge. Now, Taylor must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the apex predator of all time.

Principal photography and production will begin later this year in China and New Zealand.

The Original THE EVIL DEAD Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

The original THE EVIL DEAD plays midnights this weekend (May 20^th and 21st) at the Tivoli (6350 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis, MO) as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.

Low budget horror does not get much better than the original THE EVIL DEAD from 1981. In fact no other low budget horror film even looks like THE EVIL DEAD thanks to Sam Raimi. So if you want to see how a future major director starts from the real bottom end of film making and works his way up then you need to watch THE EVIL DEAD at all costs. Besides, Raimi was just a young kid when he made it (using a school’s 16mm film camera)….. and so were his friends who acted in it…. The movie was filmed in 1979 and released in 1982 where it hit the video market just at the right time. It was one of the very first cult classics promoted by the advent of video tape.

THE EVIL DEAD still is one of the nastiest films ever made. It contains extreme violence, blood, tree rape, torture, beheadings, dismemberments, mutilations, gore, violence towards women, chain saws – all in full view of the camera. The camera work is used unusual and skillful, the editing is dramatic and the low budget special effects beat the pants out of some of the neutered CGI we’re subjected to these days.

The premise of THE EVIL DEAD is simple. Five young kids go to a cabin in the woods for a short vacation. In the house they find a tape recording which manages to invoke an incantation which wakes up the evil in the woods. It comes after them – turning some of them into the undead, demons, zombies and flesh eating ghouls. Cue lots of household items being used as weapons, an initially sissy anti-hero (Bruce Campbell) who became, thanks to this film and its two sequels, the god of millions of adoring horror fans Copied by a hundred other horror films, exploited by a million uncensored bootleg copies – THE EVIL DEAD is still the low budget horror king. And that is a hard act to beat! Now you can catch it again on the big screen when it plays midnights this weekend (May 20^th and 21^st) at The Tivoli Theater.

Jamie Foxx And Michelle Monaghan Featured In First Look Photos For Open Road Films’ SLEEPLESS

Open Road Films has released three first look photos from their upcoming film SLEEPLESS.

SLEEPLESS stars Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained, White House Down) as undercover Las Vegas police officer Vincent Downs, who is caught in a high stakes web of corrupt cops and the mob-controlled casino underground. When a heist goes wrong, a crew of homicidal gangsters kidnaps Downs’ teenage son. In one sleepless night he will have to rescue his son, evade an internal affairs investigation and bring the kidnappers to justice.

SLEEPLESS is directed by Baran Bo Odar and is written by Andrea Berloff. The film also stars Gabrielle Union (Top Five, Bad Boys II), rapper T.I. (Ant-Man), Dermot Mulroney (The Grey, Mozart in the Jungle), Scoot McNairy (Batman Vs Superman, Argo) and David Harbour (Suicide Squad, End Of Watch).

The executive producers include John Powers Middleton, Alex Foster, Tom Ortenberg, Peter Lawson, Lauranne Bourrachot, Marco Cherqui, Jeremiah Samuels.

Open Road Films will release the film in theaters on February 24, 2017.

FOUR KIDS AND IT Starring Michael Caine, Bill Nighy And Matthew Goode To Begin UK Photography In August

Two-time Academy Award winner Michael Caine (THE CIDER HOUSE RULES, THE DARK KNIGHT, YOUTH), BAFTA Award Winner and Golden Globe Winner Bill Nighy (LOVE ACTUALLY, BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN) and Matthew Goode (THE IMITATION GAME, THE GOOD WIFE, DOWNTON ABBEY) will star in the family action adventure film FOUR KIDS AND IT directed by BAFTA Award nominee Andy De Emmony (FATHER TED, WEST IS WEST), it was announced today.

Produced by Dan Films’ Julie Baines and Anne Brogan of Kindle Entertainment, the screenplay is written by Simon Lewis and adapted from the novel “Four Children and It” by best-selling author Jacqueline Wilson. Additional writing is provided by Mark Oswin.

The film is slated to begin principal photography in August on location in the UK.

13 Films is handling worldwide rights to the project outside of the UK and is actively selling the film to buyers at the Cannes Market.

FOUR KIDS AND IT is the fun, family action adventure story of four children who are horrified to learn that their beach holiday is in fact a bonding trip with their potential future step siblings. During an argument, they accidently find a magical, sandy, grumpy creature called the Psammead who can grant them one wish a day – only to see the wish cancelled as soon as the sun sets. The kids must learn to work together and choose their wishes wisely as an evil villain (Nighy) tries his best to steal the Psammead for himself.

The Psammead, voiced by Michael Caine, is designed by acclaimed creature creators Brian and Wendy Froud. Brian is the conceptual character designer for Jim Henson’s THE DARK CRYSTAL and LABYRINTH and Wendy is the original creator of STAR WARS’ Yoda.

The creature fx for the film are being provided by MILK – the company behind the Oscar winning visual effects in EX MACHINA.

The film is based on Jacqueline Wilson’s retelling of the classic story Five Children and It written by E. Nesbit in 1902. Four Children and It was published in 2012 as part of the Puffin Classics 30 year celebration. Jacqueline Wilson is a celebrated children’s author whose titles have sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. Multiple books written by Wilson have appeared on the list of the 100 most popular books in the UK and she was named the most borrowed author in Britain’s libraries for six consecutive years.

Fortitude International has released a first look photo from THE BACHELORS.

The movie stars Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (WHIPLASH, TERMINATOR GENISYS, JUNO), Golden Globe and Oscar nominee Julie Delpy (BEFORE SUNRISE, BEFORE SUNSET), Josh Wiggins (HELLION, MAX, LOST IN THE SUN) and Odeya Rush (Upcoming HUNTER’S PRAYER, THE GIVER, GOOSEBUMPS)

Hoping for a fresh start, a widower and his 17-year-old son move from a small northern California town to Los Angeles, where a new job, a new school, a wry old friend and two extraordinary women play a transformative role in the reshaping of their lives.

Fortitude is handling international rights to the film in Cannes.
