The Varsity theater on Delmar (which now houses Vintage Vinyl) is where I first saw the crazy cult classic THE LAST DRAGON (aka BERRY GORDY’S THE LAST DRAGON) when it was new in 1985. It was a huge hit and played there for several weeks. If I could describe THE LAST DRAGON to someone who has never seen it, I’d say that it’s the essence of the 80s – kind of a weird, trend-chasing mash-up of MTV videos, Kung-Fu flicks, overacting, and beautiful women. It was like a Cannon film made by a different studio (and a Motown Production – Producer Berry Gordy was head of Motown at the time) and was full of music –  a mixture of rock, rap, R&B and pop. THE LAST DRAGON told the story of a young man named Leroy Green (played by Taimak) who searches New York City for the “master” to obtain the final level of martial arts mastery known as ‘the glow’. Along the way, he must fight an evil martial arts expert and rescue a beautiful singer (Vanity) from an obsessed music promoter. Look for Chazz Palminteri and William H. Macy in early roles!

Now, lucky St. Louisans will have the chance to see THE LAST DRAGON on the big screen again – this time up the street from the old Varsity – at the Tivoli. Not only that, the film’s star Taimak, will be in attendance! Taimak has written his memoirs called “Taimak, The Last Dragon!” and he will be there selling and signing his book and will participate in a Q&A before a screening of the film. The event is this Thursday May 26th. Doors open at 5:30. This is the national tour screening of THE LAST DRAGON. For $50 you can buy “The Glow” ticket with VIP status that includes: your movie ticket, a copy of ‘Taimak, The Last Dragon’ hardcover – (a $25 value) – PLUS a meet and greet with Taimak, a photo op with Taimak and a pair of popcorn-eating chopsticks! Taimak was only 19 years old when he starred in The Last Dragon. He was already a champion martial artist, a bouncer at New York City’s famous clubs, and a budding ladies’ man. Over the next thirty years, he had many more adventures. He learned lessons, fell in love, made countless new fans, and discovered the spiritual strength inside himself. In his book, you’ll follow Taimak’s inspirational, hilarious, shocking, eye-popping life story. You’ll be right there with him as he meets everyone from David Bowie to Mike Tyson, and you’ll join him as he experiences triumphs and heartbreaks in the world of Hollywood. You’ll even learn more about his relationship with Denise Matthews (Vanity) and his other co-stars from THE LAST DRAGON.

Taimak’s life isn’t all about Hollywood, though – it’s a story that everyone can relate to. You’ll read about his battles with self-doubt, his encounters with racism, and the struggles that he faced as a lonely kid growing up in the big city. You’ll meet his quirky parents, his beautiful girlfriends, and the friends and rivals he encountered in the dojos and grindhouse theaters of New York. By the time you’re done hearing Taimak’s story, you might just get a Glow of your own!
