Hell in Space! EVENT HORIZON Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

ehheader

“Rescue the crew, salvage what’s left of the ship. The crew is dead, doctor. Your ship killed them!”

eh3

EVENT HORIZON (1997) plays this weekend (August 26th and 27th) at The Tivoli at midnight as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli midnight series.

eh6

EVENT HORIZON is almost 20 years old but it’s midnight movie cult status is fairly new. I saw it when it was new and thought it was good, but over the years a lot of younger movie geeks, to whom  EVENT HORIZON as apparently struck a chord, have approached me wanting to talk about it, and now here we are presenting at midnight at The Tivoli. Good.

eh5

EVENT HORIZON was made in 1997 and is a somewhat conventional science-fiction horror film that reflects upon earlier sci-fi efforts such as 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY and ALIEN, yet owes as much to the some of the gorier horror films of the ‘80s, especially the Hellraiser series.

eh4

The Event Horizon is a spaceship with the capabilities to “travel faster than the speed of light.” In the year 2040, the ship hasn’t been heard from in seven years later, so a rescue mission aboard the U.S.S. Lewis and Clark is charged with bringing the crew and the entire ship of the Event Horizon back. Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne) is in charge of the operation. A British scientist, Dr. Weir (Sam Neill), haunted by the memories of his deceased wife, Claire, which are planted inside his deepest thoughts must join Miller and his crew for he was the one that designed the spaceship, Event Horizon. The rest of the cast consists of Peters (Kathleen Quinlin), and Justin (Jack Noseworthy), a rookie technician. Also, a psychologist, a pilot, and a wisecracking rescue technician round out the remaining characters. EVENT HORIZON is never predictable, the special effects are very good, and the film has a surreal, imaginative atmosphere that generates a breathtaking albeit claustrophobic fear. It really is ‘Hell in Space’

eh1
EVENT HORIZON was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who’s given us films in the MORTAL COMBAT, RESIDENT EVIL, and ALIEN VS PREDATOR series. Anderson has been accused of being a hack, but he delivers films with medium budgets and large scale special effects in a decent, workman-like manner. EVENT HORIZON is his best film – it’ wickedly scary, gory as hell, and does a good job showing what’s it like when people are forced to relive their own nightmares. It lacks logic and sense so if you’re looking for comprehension, look elsewhere. EVENT HORIZON was not a success upon its initial release and it may not have taken sci-fi-horror films to any new horizon, but it obviously stuck in the minds of filmgoers who caught up with at some point on DVD and I’m glad it’s showing midnights this weekend.

Shot in the St. Louis area by the team behind SHADOWLAND, FOUR COLOR EULOGY is a dramatic comedy that shows it’s never too late to let go of the past or to create a new future. Growing up the only child of a single mother, aspiring comic-book creator Chris (Jason Contini) escaped St. Louis 10 years ago and moved to Portland, Ore., with girlfriend Anne to forge a new life. But when Chris learns that his mother is ill, he and Anne have no choice but to pack up their lives and move back home. Uprooted, his life completely disrupted, Chris is forced to face both his mother’s mortality and a nagging childhood question: Who was his father and why wasn’t he around? With the help of longtime buddy Brian, a pop-culture geek, and family friend Rich, a bartender with a secret, Chris will have to determine what’s ultimately more important: the hero’s origins or his ongoing journey.

4ce5

FOUR COLOR EULOGY features a cast of familiar faces from the stages of St. Louis theaters representing over 30 metro area production companies. Prominent local actors Jason Contini and his father John developed the concept together and both star in the film. John plays a bartender and mentor to Jason’s character. “The opportunity to create this film with my Dad has been such a rewarding experience, from writing the film via Skype…to watching these characters come to life …to the release of the film,” reflects Jason. “And then to include people like Nicholas J. Hearne, who has been a surrogate brother of mine for 15 years, and Wyatt Weed, the older brother I never had, into the process made this a giant ‘family’ experience in every aspect.”

fourcolor839.image

Coupling 18 years of Hollywood experience with a love of all things comic-related, director, co-writer and cinematographer Wyatt Weed assembled a final product that puts geek culture into the main-stream. Weed feels that “FOUR COLOR EULOGY has been an opportunity to really mash things up – the look of the film is straight out of Close Encounters, but the mood is somewhere between a classic 50’s melodrama and an 80’s comedy. Yes, there are some in-depth geek references, but you don’t have to get them in order to understand the film. [Overall the film] is about family, friendship, and love and when it’s over…it will make you appreciate your family and your crazy friends.”

FOUR COLOR EULOGY is Weed’s second St. Louis-based feature film project with his producing partner Gayle Gallagher and second collaboration between Weed and Jason Contini. Weed praises Jason as a very experienced and studied actor, and states “I can always call on him for anything, behind the camera or in front of it. Through all of this we’ve become really good friends.”

St. Louis stage actors aren’t the only ones who get to shine in this feature, the soundtrack features songs from popular local bands and musicians such as Clockwork, Taylor Pietz and Abby Stahlschmidt.

fourcolordefault (1)

Shot exclusively in the St. Louis area during the summer of 2014, local businesses and institutions such as Uncle Bill’s Pancake House on South Kingshighway, Melrose Club on The Hill, Newcastle Comics in Maryland Heights and Saints Mary and Joseph Catholic Church feature prominently in the film.

A yummy variety of food from Schlafly’s kitchen is available as are plenty of pints of their famous home-brewed beer.

“This short film began as an experimental attempt to explore the “long take” as a cinematic tool. The story then incorporated horror, fantasy, comedy & LGBT genre elements, and it evolved into something new that captured my imagination and intrigued me all through to the finished film. This entire short film is comprised by 3 long takes, one of which is broken up into 2 parts, by an insert-shot. Though it sounds simple, it took many hours to film and over 70 attempts to get the exact right long takes needed, which had to be perfect in terms of composition, framing, exposure, camera movement, focus and actor performance and blocking.”

Your’e Killing Me Smalls! THE SANDLOT Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli (and Saturday at Noon)

sandlot-header2

“Anyone who wants to be a can’t-hack-it pantywaist who wears their mama’s bra, raise your hand!”

sandlot-podcast-hey-do-you-remember

THE SANDLOT (1993) plays this weekend (August 19th and 20th) at The Tivoli at midnight as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli midnight series. It will also screen at noon on Saturday.

THE SANDLOT is a beloved film that over the last 23 years has gained quite a cult following thanks its joyous nostalgia that’s along the lines of A CHRISTMAS STORY. Unlike many movies that claim to be family films, THE SANDLOT actually is a “family film”. Kids like it for the  situations and dialogue, while adults relate to it as well. Young Scotty Smalls (Tom Guidry) moves into a new town and desperately wants to fit in with the rest of the neighborhood boys and in the summer of 1962, a bat and a ball is all it takes. A solid swing will send the ball sailing over the fence to never be seen again for it lands in Mr. Mertle’s (James Earl Jones) backyard, which is guarded by a humongous dog…a super slobbering “beast” that devours anything and everything. The high drama and dilemma of the summer is trying to retrieve a Babe Ruth autographed ball from the beast. Other cast members of note: Patrick Renna, Mike Vitar, Chauncey Leopardi, Denis Leary and Karen Allen. THE SANDLOT is nostalgic, sentimental and stuffed full of innocence and humor. Worth watching again…and again and you’ll have your chance this to see it  three times this weekend when THE SANDLOT plays midnights Friday and Saturday (August 19th and 20th) and Saturday at Noon!. It’s definitely a must see for anyone who has their old mitt lying somewhere in a closet or attic at home, and count on wanting to find it and take it outside to play catch when the movie is over (at 2AM!!)
