The Academy & The Mary Pickford Foundation Launch Multi-year Partnership Promoting Silent Film Era – Begins Sept 11

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Mary Pickford Foundation have partnered on a multi-year initiative to promote the legacy of Mary Pickford and the silent film era, Academy CEO Dawn Hudson announced. The partnership includes an annual silent film screening, silent film preservation initiatives and the digitization of components of the Academy’s Mary Pickford Collection.

To kick off this partnership, and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Academy’s Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study, the Academy and the Foundation will host a special “Inside the Vaults” event on Tuesday, September 11, at the Pickford Center in Hollywood. The evening includes behind-the-scenes tours of the vaults, a screening of a rare Mary Pickford short “The New York Hat” (1912), the Los Angeles premiere of the Academy Film Archive’s newly restored print of “The Mark of Zorro” (1920), starring Douglas Fairbanks, and a display of select items from the Academy’s Mary Pickford Collection. Tours begin at 6 p.m. and the screening program begins at 8 p.m.

“We are thrilled that together with the Mary Pickford Foundation, we will bring the groundbreaking work of Mary Pickford and the pioneers of the silent film era to the attention of a new generation,” said Hudson. “She was a founding member of the Academy as well as a film visionary, hands-on philanthropist, business leader and educator.”

“This partnership between the Academy and Mary’s foundation is her legacy coming full circle,” said Henry Stotsenberg, chairman and CEO of the Mary Pickford Foundation. “We are particularly pleased to be collaborating on the annual Mary Pickford Celebration of Silent Films. We are also looking forward to working with the Academy to share Mary’s commitment to her craft and her community, and to enhancing the Academy’s educational programs and vast permanent collection.”

The Mary Pickford Foundation will work in partnership with the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library to augment its existing collection of Pickford papers, photographs and ephemera with newly found items from the silent film star’s personal collection. In addition, the Library will digitize a selection of historically significant items in the Mary Pickford Collection. Under this initiative, the Academy Film Archive will preserve silent films and furnish prints to be shown at the annual silent film screening.

The “Inside the Vaults” tours, to be conducted by the Academy’s preservation, research and technical staff, will showcase the Academy’s collections as well as the preservation and research work of its Film Archive, Margaret Herrick Library, and Science and Technology Council.

Visitors will get a firsthand look at climate-controlled storage vaults for rare film materials, library holdings and motion picture artifacts; film preservation and restoration facilities; exhibition prep and object conservation areas; and studio and laboratory facilities for advancing motion picture technology.

Tickets to “Inside the Vaults” are sold out. A standby line will form on the day of the event, and standby numbers will be assigned starting at approximately 5:30 p.m. Any available tickets will be distributed shortly before the program begins. Ticket holders should plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the event to ensure a seat in the theater. Doors open at 6 p.m. Ticketed seating is unreserved.

Cut off completely from his support team and guarded by a ruthless team of trained military personnel, Breslin must team with fellow prisoner, Church, to accomplish the impossible and escape the inescapable.

Synopsis:

The Road Warrior Returns In MAD MAX: FURY ROAD – George Miller Directing, Stars Tom Hardy & Charlize Theron

Principal photography began 9 July on the dystopian action adventure MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, a Kennedy Miller Mitchell production written and directed by “Mad Max” creator and Academy Award® winner George Miller (“Happy Feet”). The film will be presented by Warner Bros. Pictures in association with Village Roadshow Pictures. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD—the fourth in the franchise’s history—stars Tom Hardy (“The Dark Knight Rises”) in the title role of Max Rockatansky, alongside Oscar® winner Charlize Theron (“Monster”, “Prometheus”) as Imperator Furiosa.

According to Miller, “Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived.”

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD also stars Nicholas Hoult (“X-Men: First Class”) as Nux; Hugh Keays-Byrne (“Mad Max”, “Sleeping Beauty”) as Immortan Joe; and Nathan Jones (“Conan the Barbarian”) as Rictus Erectus. Collectively known as The Wives, Zoë Kravitz (“X-Men: First Class”) plays Toast, Riley Keough (“Magic Mike”) is Capable, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (“Transformers: Dark of the Moon”) is Splendid. They are joined by supermodel Abbey Lee Kershaw as The Dag and Courtney Eaton as Fragile, both of whom are making their big screen debuts. Also featured in the movie are Josh Helman as Slit, Jennifer Hagan as Miss Giddy, and singer/songwriter/performer iOTA as Coma-Doof Warrior.

The cast is rounded out by well-known Australian actors John Howard, Richard Carter, supermodel Megan Gale, Angus Sampson, Joy Smithers, Gillian Jones, Melissa Jaffer and Melita Jurisic.

Miller is directing the film from a screenplay he wrote with Brendan McCarthy and Nico Lathouris. Miller also produces the film, along with longtime producing partner, Oscar® nominee Doug Mitchell (“Babe”, “Happy Feet”), and P.J. Voeten. Iain Smith, Graham Burke and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers.

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes Academy Award®-winning director of photography John Seale (“The English Patient”); action unit director and stunt coordinator Guy Norris (“Australia”); editor Margaret Sixel (“Happy Feet”); production designer Colin Gibson (“Babe”); Oscar®-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan (“A Room with a View”); and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt (“Knowing”).

Shooting on MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is taking place in Africa with the support of the Australian government. Originally slated to be shot in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, the production was forced to relocate due to severe flooding, rendering the Australian landscape unsuitable for the film. The rain turned the area into an oasis instead of the post-apocalyptic terrain that is the setting for Max’s world.

WAMG At The JAWS Press Day

JAWS, the landmark motion picture that still makes audiences afraid to go in the water comes to Blu-ray for the first time ever on August 14th, 2012. To celebrate, WAMG got to sit down with Joe Alves (JAWS production designer), Carl Gottlieb (Played “Meadows” and co-wrote JAWS), and J. The Film Society Of Lincoln Center Announces World Premiere of Ang Lee’s LIFE OF PI As Opening Night Gala Selection For 50th Anniversary Of NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL

The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced today that Ang Lee’s LIFE OF PI will make its World Premiere as the Opening Night Gala presentation for the upcoming 50th New York Film Festival (September 28 – October 14). The screening will mark the Academy Award-winning director’s return to NYFF, 12 years after CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON served as the Closing Night Gala presentation (2000). The selection of LIFE OF PI also allows Lee to join Robert Altman, Pedro Almodóvar and François Truffaut as the only directors to have had more than one film chosen to open NYFF. (THE ICE STORM was the Opening Night Gala selection in 1997.)

A respected presence at the New York Film Festival and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, in 2009 FSLC celebrated Lee’s career with a complete retrospective of the director’s work at the Walter Reade Theater. The LIFE OF PI screening will also mark the first time a film has been presented in 3D for NYFF’s Opening Night Gala.

Among the films that have been selected for the prestigious Opening Night Gala slot over the course of NYFF’s 50-year history include Luis Buñuel’s THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL (1963), Gillo Pontecorvo’s THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS (1967), Akira Kurosawa’s RAN (1985), Pedro Almodóvar’s WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (1988) Quentin Tarantino’s PULP FICTION (1994), Mike Leigh’s SECRETS & LIES (1996), Stephen Frears’s THE QUEEN (2006) and David Fincher’s THE SOCIAL NETWORK (2010) (complete list below).

Based on the book that has sold more than seven million copies and spent years on the bestseller list, Academy Award winner Lee’s LIFE OF PI takes place over three continents, two oceans, many years, and a wide world of imagination. Lee’s vision, coupled with game-changing technological breakthroughs, has turned a story long thought un-filmable into a totally original cinematic event and the first truly international all-audience motion picture. LIFE OF PI follows a young man who survives a disaster at sea and is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While marooned on a lifeboat, he forms an amazing and unexpected connection with the ship¹s only other survivor…a fearsome Bengal tiger. The Twentieth Century Fox release is due in theaters on November 21, 2012.

The 17-day New York Film Festival highlights the best in world cinema, featuring top films from celebrated filmmakers as well as fresh new talent. The selection committee, chaired by Peña also includes: Melissa Anderson, Contributor, Village Voice; Scott Foundas, Associate Program Director, The Film Society of Lincoln Center; Todd McCarthy, Chief Film Critic, The Hollywood Reporter; and Amy Taubin, Contributing Editor, Film Comment and Sight and Sound.

It was announced last week that Robert Zemeckis’s FLIGHT will make its World Premiere as the Closing Night film for the upcoming 50th New York Film Festival.

An action-packed mystery thriller, Academy Award winner, Denzel Washington stars in Robert Zemeckis’s FLIGHT as Whip Whitaker, a seasoned airline pilot, who miraculously crash lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe, saving nearly every passenger on board. Although he is immediately acclaimed as a hero, the legal, moral and ethical aspects of Whip’s behavior before and after the accident are much more ambiguous than initially meet the public eye. FLIGHT is a compelling drama anchored by a great performance from one of our most distinguished actors. The stellar supporting cast includes John Goodman, Don Cheadle, Melissa Leo, Bruce Greenwood and Kelly Reilly. The Paramount Pictures release is due in theaters on November 2.
