Space Vampires Invade the Hi-Pointe Midnights This Weekend – LIFEFORCE

The guys at Destroy the Brain are following up last month’s TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE with another film from director Tobe Hooper. His 1985 opus LIFEFORCE was exciting, trashy sci-fi from the nuts at Cannon Films, with a better than average cast, some decent special effects, an interesting premise, and yes, the hottest space vampire ever seen on screen! The plot of this gonzo sci-fi horror/hybrid is incomprehensible yet strangely compelling: A space crew brings back three bodies from an alien ship. All naked. Two guys and one girl. The guys don’t count for much. They’re not that important. What is important is the naked alien woman, (Mathilda May). She is to be lusted after, feared and despised for being so feminine. Instead of doing the usual vampire move of biting people on the neck, she kisses her victims and steals their LIFEFORCE. This movie is in fear of the female body. Ms May spends most of the movie completely naked. The men can’t get over how alluring she is. When the lead astronaut (Steve Railsback) has a dream about her he says, “You’re taking too much life out of me!”

lifeforce-2

I can’t help but wonder about the curious subtext of LIFEFORCE. A beautiful, nude space vampiress wanders the Earth seducing every man in sight and drains them of their life force. Sheesh! Were screenwriters Dan O’Bannon or Don Jakoby victims of a bad break up when they concocted this outer space oddity? Did Matilda May catch pneumonia from running around naked in London for days? Still, LIFEFORCE is pretty damn entertaining and definitely worth a look just to catch Patrick Stewart vomiting up great gobs of gore.

LIFEFORCE screens at midnight this weekend (September 5th and 6th) at St. Louis’ fabulous Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave, St. Louis) as part of their Late Night Grindhouse Midnight series, so don’t miss it!

Doves Cry Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli – PURPLE RAIN Starring Prince

PURPLE RAIN  plays this weekend (September 5th and 6th) at The Tivoli at midnight as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli midnight series.

purple-Rain2

PURPLE RAIN is pure ‘80s. Prince was at the top of his game in 1984, a musical genius who was bringing together everything from punk to funk to heavy metal in a singular fusion that pointed the way to a race-blind future. Everyone wanted to see this movie, which was not much more than an extended music video. The plot of PURPLE RAIN is hackneyed and has a paper-thin screenplay, Something about Prince as a small-time nightclub star in Minnesota known as ‘The Kid’ who dreams of making it big, but there always seems to be something standing in his way. That’s about it. But the film was outstanding, wonderfully scored and was a huge hit. Prince’s Academy Award for ‘Best Song Score’ was richly deserved. Morris Day steals every scene as Prince’s greatest rival and Apollonia Kotero just looks foxy as the love interest. ‘Let’s Go Crazy/’Purple Rain’ is an incredibly well done, dynamic concert sequence. Certainly Prince knew the stage/concert scene in Minnesota very well, but despite a couple of attempts (remember UNDER THE CHERRY MOON? – me neither), and a sequel, GRAFFITTI BRIDGE, Prince never struck gold in Hollywood again.

Now you’ll have the chance to relive 1984 when PURPLE RAIN plays on the big screen this weekend (September 5th and 6th) at The Tivoli at midnight as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli midnight series.

WAMG’s Conversation With THE NOVEMBER MAN Composer Marco Beltrami

the november man

Composer Marco Beltrami collaborated with director Phillip Noyce to set the tone for the big screen adaptation of THE GIVER, the beautifully ominous, suspenseful score for director Bong Joon Ho sci-fi thriller SNOWPIERCER, and Tommy Lee Jones’ Cannes-hit THE HOMESMAN.

Beltrami’s new films include the Tom Hardy/James Gandolfini film THE DROP and director Roger Donaldson’s latest movie, THE NOVEMBER MAN, starring Pierce Brosnan, Olga Kurylenko, and Will Patton. Based on Bill Granger’s novel There Are No Spies, the seventh of a thirteen part book series, THE NOVEMBER MAN centers on an ex-CIA operative pitted against his former pupil in a race to find a valuable witness who is hiding from the past, and holds the key to an international conspiracy. Read Jim Batts’ review HERE.

Adept to scoring both bone-chilling thrillers (World War Z, The Hurt Locker) and emotive dramas (The Sessions), the Academy Award nominated composer recently took some time to talk to me about his score for Pierce Brosnan’s spy movie and working with visionary directors.

Marco Beltrami, WWZ, Abbey Road, London April 2013

WAMG: You’ve had quite the year – or last few years. We spoke to you in 2013 right before WORLD WAR Z was released. The Brad Pitt, zombies combo made for such a great score.

Marco Beltrami: Oh thank you!

WAMG: This year, audiences heard your music in SNOWPIERCER, THE GIVER and now THE NOVEMBER MAN – which is like 007 gone rogue. How were you brought into the project?

MB: Pierce Brosnan is a friend of mine and he told me he was shooting this movie and he’d love if I looked at it to see what I thought of it musically. I went in when they were editing and met director Roger Donaldson. We talked a little about the movie, which had a temp score at the time, and I told him about the things I liked and things that could give it a more unique identity. The film takes place in Eastern/Central Europe, so we talked about giving it that flavor.

WAMG: Did you know about the series of books beforehand?

MB: No, but after Roger showed me the movie, I went and worked for a bit and came up with some schematic ideas. He then came out to the studio and listened. It’s the first picture we’ve done together, so it always takes a bit to develop a common language. Overall the process went very smoothly and there’s a quite a bit of music in the movie.

WAMG: There is and it has a very retro sound to it. Were you keen on any particular instruments for this type of spy thriller?

MB:  I wanted to give it something that would be, if they make other November Man movies, something that can work as a theme. It does have a retro theme to it. It’s the guitar that gives it that vibe. It is a hybrid score – there are orchestral instruments, but also quite a bit of electronically processed instruments. Hopefully it has a modern sound to it.

WAMG: A sequel has been announced. Have you signed on for another movie?

MB: After the movie opens, we’ll see.

SNOWPIERCER_8

WAMG: With the terrific SNOWPIERCER, your score really captured the bleak desperation of director Bong Joon-ho’s vision. A suite from the film debuted at the opening night ceremony at the LA Film Festival. How did that go?

MB: That was really good. In fact, it’s up online and Sandy Cameron, the violinist, along with her ensemble, and I thought it would be neat to open the festival with a virtuostic violin piece based on SNOWPIERCER. She and the ensemble are amazing players so it came out really cool.

Watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Wx74XO8BAI and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGo-L5jVWvo

WAMG: I love what you’ve done with the Revolutionary War TV show TURN on AMC. Is it a challenge to go between the two mediums.

MB:  The TV stuff is a very quick turnaround and invariably it’s very busy. You have different responsibilities depending on the day. Overall it’s been a very busy year.

Marco Beltrami, WWZ, Abbey Road, London April 2013

WAMG: Are you partial to certain directors and their visions for a film?

MB: It’s varied. They all have their own personalities and quirks, so it’s really fun. The job never gets old in that respect. I also learn a lot – in the different way different directors treat the material and their approach to the score.

Where certain projects that I’ve done standout as things that I’ve really tried to do and it affected my work for future projects – like when I worked with Tommy Lee Jones on The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005).

WAMG: You worked with him again on his new movie THE HOMESMAN.

MB: That comes out in November and I totally changed the way we worked. We recorded the orchestra outside, with no walls for the sound to bounce off of, and then created outside instruments like an outdoor piano where the piano wires were 175 feet long. There were all kinds of neat stuff for that score and the spirit of innovation that he embraces. Tommy Lee Jones is one of those directors that never uses a “temp score” which ups your own creativity in terms of, there is no guide.  It’s a very unique movie.

the homesman

WAMG: You have the Tom Hardy/James Gandolfini film THE DROP coming out soon, as well as second THE WOMAN IN BLACK film. You also worked on another TV show “1864”. Your music takes you all over the place and to different times.

MB: That was with Danish director, Ole Bornedal, that I’ve worked with in the past. He did the 8-part miniseries for Danish television and he’s going to make a feature film out of that, and we recorded that this year as well.

The WOMAN IN BLACK: ANGEL OF DEATH is done and it came out well. It’s very similar to the first one. In fact, I tried to integrate the two movies. I had the exact same ensemble, the same musicians come in to play, and set them up in exactly the same spots as the first film. Half of the score is from the original and half is new to keep in the spirit of what was done before.

Right now I’m working on the movie TRUE STORY that stars James Franco and Jonah Hill. That will be in theaters soon.

Thanks To Marco Beltrami. THE NOVEMBER MAN is in theaters now and the score album will be released through Varese Sarabande on September 9th, 2014.

Harold Lloyd Silent Comedies With Live Music Friday Night at Webster University

freshman-header

“I’m just a regular fellow – step right up and call me ‘Speedy’ “

THE FRESHMAN (1925) and THE MARATHON (1919), both starring Harold Lloyd, will screen this Friday, September 5th at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium

freshman

There’s nothing better than silent films accompanied by live music and I’d go as far as saying there’s nothing better than silent films accompanied by the Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra. The group is a treasure and St. Louis is lucky to have them here. I’ve seen them perform with silent films several times, often at The St. Louis International Film Festival, and usually at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium and it’s always a fantastic time at the movies. Last summer the Rats and People played along to some Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton at the SLIFF/KIDS film fest, and this Friday night, September 5th,  they will be accompanying two films starring the great silent film comic Harold Lloyd; THE FRESHMAN (1925) and THE MARATHON (1919)

freshman8

While not as much of a household name as Chaplin or Keaton, Harold Lloyd was one of the most popular and influential film comedians of the silent era. Lloyd made nearly 200 comedies, both silent and “talkies”, between 1914 and 1947. He is best known for his bespectacled “Glasses” character, a resourceful, success-seeking go-getter who was perfectly in tune with 1920s era United States. Llyod’s films frequently contained extended chase scenes and daredevil physical feats. The image of Lloyd hanging from the hands of a clock high above the street in SAFETY LAST (1923) is now part of cinema folklore. Lloyd performed these dangerous stunts himself, despite having injured himself in August 1919 while doing publicity pictures for the Roach studio. An accident with a bomb mistaken as a prop resulted in the loss of the thumb and index finger of his right hand (the injury was disguised on future films with the use of a special prosthetic glove).

marathon_std.original3

In THE FRESHMAN (1925), Lloyd plays Harold ‘Speedy’ Lamb, a college freshman at Tate University in 1925, the days of Prohibition, beanies, flappers, the fox trot, and college sweaters with big letters on the chest. Harold is the butt of everyone’s jokes from beginning to end, except for a maid of simple taste who loves him. He dreams of playing varsity football and tries to convince the other players he’s more than the humble water boy he actually is. In one memorably funny sequence, he dances in a suit that is only half made and as the night progresses proceeds to lose pockets, sleeves etc. until he is left only in his underwear. The film climaxes of course, with the big game, and I can’t wait to see THE FRESHMAN, which runs 72 minutes, on the big screen with live music.

freshman2

Also showing will be the 10-minute short THE MARATHON (1919). In it Harold Lloyd tries to impress a girl but gets chased by her father and the police right into an ongoing marathon. There are plenty of Harold Lloyd gags jammed in to ten minutes, including the use of a midget, a small dog, and an impressive mirror joke.

I highly recommend seeing these two silent films on the big screen Friday night September 5th along with the Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra. The show starts at 7:30.Webster University’s Winifred Moore Auditorium is located at 470 E. Lockwood Ave.

DRAFT DAY – The Blu Review

draftday_trailer_gs

When Michael Haffner reviewed DRAFT DAY here at We Are Movie Geeks, he wrote: “DRAFT DAY still serves as a carefree way to get through a Sunday afternoon until the 2014 football season kicks off. A few late in the game twists will make audiences cheer and seeing Costner act as a capable leader for the whole team makes DRAFT DAY an easy win for football fans.” – read all of Michael’s review HERE)

DRAFT DAY

I missed DRAFT DAY on the big screen but just caught up with it on Blu-ray courtesy of the folks at Lionsgate. I was less enthused than Michael. The title doesn’t lie. This film is all about the NFL draft and draft day to a mind-numbing degree. It’s a real ‘inside baseball’ look at the process but I suspect most folks who are not fans of the NFL will find their eyes just glazing over early on. They tried to hammer father/mother and relationship issues in to Kevin Costner’s Sonny Weaver character along the way but it feels tacked on, as if the producers pulled the writer aside and forced it in to the script after it was finished. Weaver’s peripheral romance with Jennifer Garner’s executive lawyer is dull and pointless, as are the conversations with his opinionated mother (Ellen Burstyn). In the lead, Costner remains in the kind of laid-back mode he’s gotten away with in the past, but now just seems lethargic, barely commanding the screen at all. It’s clear that the NFL was in full support of this movie but that spun in to an almost propaganda type cooperation. DRAFT DAY does get somewhat intriguing as the minutes tick down to the televised event the film’s named after, but on balance, DRAFT DAY is one long ESPN/NFL commercial with no depth.

DRAFT DAY

However, hardcore sports fans seemed to have enjoyed it.

Paul Salfen at Fox Sports wrote:

“Kevin Costner is the king of great sports movies. DRAFT DAY is another winner!”

And Verron Haynes, an NFL Running Back said the movie is:

“Masterfully entertaining and completely electrifying. A must-see!”

Draft-Day-Movie-Review-Image-2

DRAFT DAY comes to Blu-ray Disc from LionsGate Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that is impeccably sharp and well detailed, offering sweeping panoramics of football fields and offices, delivering excellent fine detail in midrange and close-up shots (several close-ups of Costner are almost unforgiving in revealing the increasingly deep crags in the actor’s face). Colors are generally very accurate looking and frequently pop nicely aided by strong, consistent contrast.

The quality of the audio can be noticed in the scenes with newsrooms, meeting rooms, and overlapping dialog. The track proves impressive for the movie’s many smaller character-driven moments. Like the video, the audio here is quite impressive, and also earns a reference-quality score.

Kevin Costner in Draft Day (2014).

Bonus Features:

–  (HD) On the clock: The making of Draft Day (2 segments totaling 59 minutes)

–  (HD) Welcome to Prime Time – 9 minute featurette

–  Filmmaker audio commentary featuring writers Rajiv Joseph and Scott Rothman

–  (HD) 5 deleted scenes totaling 8 minutes

–  (HD) Theatrical trailer

–  Bonus DVD

–  Digital HD Copy

Here’s a special clip that’s a nice summary of  Costner’s many sports films:

Though I didn’t care much for DRAFT DAY, it’s a film that seems to know its audience and relishes in the details of the business of sports, and a certain type of sports junkie may find a lot to enjoy.

Mayweather vs. Maidana, a 12-round world championship unification rematch bout for Mayweather and Maidana’s respective 147-pound titles, is promoted by Mayweather Promotions

The first meeting between Mayweather and Maidana was an epic 12-round showdown that ended in a majority decision for Mayweather, but Maidana landed more punches on Mayweather than any other opponent he faced throughout his undefeated career.

Mayweather has been named the world’s highest-paid athlete by Forbes and Fortune/Sports Illustrated for the last calendar year and was nominated for “Best Male Athlete” and “Fighter of the Year” at this year’s ESPN ESPY Awards.

The thirty-year-old Maidana put himself on the map when he stunned the boxing world in December 2013 with a dominant victory over up-and-coming superstar Adrien Broner. In 2012, Maidana joined forces with renowned trainer Robert Garcia (2012 Trainer of the Year) and has since gone 4-1 with 3 knockouts with his only loss coming at the hands of Mayweather.

BANG BANG BABY, developed by Jeffrey St. Jules in the Cannes Film Festival’s Cinéfondation, is an otherworldly musical about Stepphy (Jane Levy), who is trapped in the sleepy 1960′s town of Lonely Arms taking care of her alcoholic father (Peter Stormare).  Stepphy dreams of escaping to a better life on the stage and screen, and when rock star Bobby Shore’s (Justin Chatwin) car breaks down in Lonely Arms, it seems her impossible dream might actually be coming true. But when Fabian (David Reale), the town creep, tells Stepphy that the local chemical factory is leaking dangerous purple fumes that can cause human mutations, Stepphy becomes obsessed with hiding these dark secrets from Bobby until they can escape together and make all of her fantasies a reality.

The-Guest_1sht_final_small

Check out the official poster for THE GUEST starring Dan Stevens.

From the director of YOU’RE NEXT and featuring a standout, badass performance from Dan Stevens (“Downton Abbey”), comes THE GUEST: a tense, action-packed and unpredictable film like everything and nothing you’ve ever seen before. Empire Magazine called it “a demented action-horror hybrid of sci-fi conspiracy thriller and gore-fest”, and Vanity Fair said, “THE GUEST is big, it’s bold, it’s badass, full of flavor Hollywood wishes it could pour over its vanilla blockbusters.”

A soldier (Dan Stevens) introduces himself to the Peterson family, claiming to be a friend of their son who died in action. After the young man is welcomed into their home, a series of accidental deaths seem to be connected to his presence.

Also starring Maika Monroe, Leland Orser, Sheila Kelley, Brendan Meyer and Lance Reddick and produced by Keith Calder & Jessica Calder, the film will show at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Midnight Madness program.

Picturehouse will release THE GUEST in theaters September 17.
