Hitting theaters on October 23rd is the musical adventure JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS from director Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation).

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer and judging by social media, fans of the original iconic Hasbro animated TV series are disappointed.

See the reaction on the film’s Facebook page here. Comments on YouTube range from:

“Um???? Where are the actual Holograms???? Like that’s a pretty big part of the movie???”

“This pays no homage to the original anime series,” “No Misfits? No Starlight House? No Starlight Girls? No Synergy? I can’t be more underwhelmed.”

As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden.

In JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice.

The movie stars Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, Hayley Kiyoko, Ryan Guzman, Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis.

It is written by Ryan Landels and produced by Chu, Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions, Scooter Braun for SB Projects, Bennett Schneir, and Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis of Hasbro Studios.

Set for release in the United States on May 6, 2016, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Community”) from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (“Captain America: The Winter Solider,” Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”).

The film also includes outstanding additional cast, including Chadwick Boseman (“42,” “Get on Up”) as T’Challa/Black Panther, Emily VanCamp (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Revenge”) as Sharon Carter/Agent 13, Daniel Brühl (“Inglourious Basterds,” “Bourne Ultimatum”), Frank Grillo (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Warrior”) as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones, William Hurt (“A History of Violence,” Marvel’s “The Incredible Hulk”) as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross and Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”).

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR is produced by Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, with Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Victoria Alonso, Patricia Whitcher, Nate Moore and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.

On the heels of the colossal domestic opening of Marvel’s AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, Marvel, the Russo brothers and IMAX Corporation also announced today that Marvel’s AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – PARTS 1 & 2, the two-part installment to the global blockbuster franchise, will be shot in their entirety using IMAX and ARRI’s next generation revolutionary 2D digital camera – a joint customized digital version of ARRI’s new large format camera, the Alexa 65.

The two-part Avengers saga marks the first time a Hollywood feature film will have been shot completely using IMAX cameras and will feature IMAX’s exclusive aspect ratio, providing moviegoers a uniquely immersive experience.

Prior to filming Marvel’s AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR – PARTS 1 & 2, Joe and Anthony Russo will use the IMAX/ARRI 2D digital camera for select action sequences on the forthcoming Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, which will release in IMAX theatres in May of 2016.

Joe and Anthony Russo stated, “The intent with the Infinity War films is to bring ten years of accumulative storytelling to an incredible climax. We felt that the best way to exploit the scale and scope required to close out the final chapter of these three phases, was to be the first films shot entirely on the IMAX/ARRI Digital camera.”

Marvel’s AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR– Part 1 is slated for release in IMAX theatres on May 4, 2018; Part 2 will open on May 3, 2019.

Marvel Studios most recently continued its unprecedented success with the release of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON on May 1, 2015. The film recorded the second biggest opening weekend of all time with a $191.3 million box office. It has also been the #1 release in every country where it has been released.

“Skull Island: Reign of Kong” Opening Summer 2016 At Universal Orlando

Skull Island Reign Of Kong Ride Film Still_HR

King Kong will rule at Universal Orlando Resort next year in the groundbreaking attraction, “Skull Island: Reign of Kong.”

The new attraction will open in the summer of 2016 at Universal’s Islands of Adventure – and will be an intense, all-new adventure brought to life in a dramatically themed environment. Skull Island: Reign of Kong will pull guests into a powerfully told story where they become part of the next generation of the Kong legend.

It begins as guests are transported deep into a wild and mysterious world, where their mission is to discover creatures of unknown origin – but where they are soon fighting for their own survival. Their journey will take them through an ancient temple inhabited by hostile natives, a perilous jungle ruled by prehistoric creatures, a foreboding underworld of caves concealing unspeakable terrors – and face-to-face with the colossal Kong himself.

Universal Creative is working closely with Peter Jackson, famed director of 2005’s blockbuster movie, “King Kong,” to immerse guests in this incredible adventure.

“King Kong is a Hollywood movie legend and a huge part of both our history and our future,” said Mike West, Executive Producer, Universal Creative. “He gives us the opportunity to tap into everything that makes our film history so special and everything that makes our theme park attractions so spectacular. We can’t wait to bring him to life in such an epic way.”

MAD MAX – The 1979 Original Screens at The Tivoli Midnights This Weekend

madmax-header

“The chain in those handcuffs is high-tensile steel. It’d take you ten minutes to hack through it with this. Now, if you’re lucky, you could hack through your ankle in five minutes. Go!”

madmax3

So jazzed about MAD MAX FURY ROAD you’re having trouble sleeping? Can’t wait until the 15th? Would a midnight screen of the original MAD MAX from 1979 hold you over? Unless you got a pass to this week’s screening of MMFR, it’s gonna have to! MAD MAX will be playing midnights this Friday and Saturday night (may 8th and 9th) at The Tivoli as part of their ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ midnight series and I will be there handing out some MAD MAX FURY ROAD schwag (I’m not sure what it is exactly yet but I think it will be T-Shirts and hats)

madmax6

Director George Miller’s MAD MAX, with an unknown Mel Gibson in the lead, would probably rate as just another undistinguished exercise in road kill mayhem were it not such a polished, high-octane, adrenalin-laced Australian production about terror on the highway. The overall novelty of this slam-bang import came from the superlative camera-work of cinematographer David Eggby, the highly credible special effects, the super-charged stunt car driving, and George Miller’s competent, no-nonsense helming. Although it isn’t quite as spectacular as its sequel THE ROAD WARRIOR (1981), and was only available in a weirdly-dubbed American-accents version for decades, MAD MAX qualifies as top-notch entertainment for anybody who craves revenge-based actioners. Mel Gibson became a star after this role. He’s cool and charismatic but also shows great skill as an actor – years before he became boxoffice. Even better are the villains. Hugh Keays-Byrne is convincingly sadistic as ‘Toecutter’ the leader of the biker gang that Mad Max goes up against. Tim Burns is enjoyably over-the-top as Johnny Boy and Vince Gil is memorable in his small role as The Nightrider (“I’m a fuel injected suicide machine. I am the rocker, I am the roller, I am the out-of-controller!”). The best performances in the film however are the cars. For its low budget, the stunt work is amazing. Max’s car is a 1973 Ford Falcon GT Coupe with a 300 bhp 351C V8 engine, customized with the front end of a Ford Fairmont and other modifications, but you already knew that!

Admission is $8. Hope to see everyone this weekend at The Tivoli!

Help Kickstart Dan Fogler’s BROOKLYN GLADIATOR!

brooklyn gladiator

You may have noticed that we post a lot of news about Dan Fogler on this site. That is because he has been very good to us over the years always making time for interviews and offering exclusive first peeks at various projects. Now it is our chance to give a little back to him. A few weeks ago we posted a fun “interview” with Dan about his hit TV show SECRETS AND LIES. Prior to shooting that sketch, I went for a walk with Dan through the streets of Brooklyn as he discussed his new comic, BROOKLYN GLADIATOR. The story is a twisted tale of government conspiracy set in a dystopian future that still manages to feel familiar yet completely unique in both style and content. To bring this creation to life, Dan is running a Kickstarter campaign that ends in less than 24 hours. There are a ton of great perks including signed DVDs, posters and original artwork. You can even have your likeness used as one of the main characters. Check out the video below and then visit his Kickstarter page by 1:45 PM EST on May 1st to donate!

CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA – The Review

cosm_image

The “metacinema” is a small but ever-present category of films that span all genres, typically are of a smaller, art house or independent scale of production and typically are also hit or miss. Metacinema, for the sake of this review, is loosely defined as a film presented as a story about its own production. These films, albeit possible, are usually not documentary, but are presented in a way that can seem based in non-fiction. For this reason, some viewers find them confusing or distracting. Some of these films are rather pretentious, while others are quite groundbreaking.

CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA falls somewhere safely between pretentious and groundbreaking on the scale of successful metacinema filmmaking. Truth be told, this is not actually a true example of metacinema, as its not a film about its own production. However, it is a film about an actress preparing for a major role in a play and the insecurities she has in connection with the play, her career and her stage in life.

Juliette Binoche plays Maria Enders, a popular but aging actress who must face an uncomfortable reflection of herself when she reluctantly agrees to taking part in a revival of the play that kick started her career 20 years prior. In the revival, however, she plays an older character, while a much younger rising actress named Jo-Ann Ellis (played by Chloe Grace Moretz) takes on the role Maria played 20 years ago. Struggling to connect with her current role and still emotionally attached to her original role, Maria must face the young actress and herself and embrace her place in time.

CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA is set within the Swiss Alps as she and Valentine, her personal assistant, travel by train to attend a tribute to the playwright and director that gave Maria her break, only to have tragedy strike and alter their plans. Having made the journey into the mountains, Maria and Valentine decide to make the most of it and prepare for her role. What ensues is a rather surreal, often uncomfortable blending and blurring of reality and rehearsed performance that juxtaposes the two throughout the two women’s time in the mountains.

Valentine, played by Kristen Stewart, provides a sort of balancing reality check for Maria, who is far too caught up in her own drama to focus herself on the role. Maria needs Valentine, not only to organize and plan her daily life, but also to challenge and force her to delve into her role, no matter how it makes her feel. Stewart gives a surprisingly deft and articulate performance, carrying much of the philosophical workload for the film. Stewart trademark persona is still present, but it takes a backseat to the script’s strengths and to her veteran co-star who outshines her, despite Stewart’s commendable portrayal.

CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA is written and directed by Oliver Assayas. As is typical of his past work, Assayas still proves to be a writer filling the role of a filmmaker, delivering though-provoking stories with strong characters. Aside from the most obvious dilemma of dealing with one’s own aging and sense of losing relevance, some other smaller but related themes pop up as well. There is a thread of generational and cultural gaps that runs through the film, represented by Maria and Valentine. One of my favorite scenes occurs when the two are having drinks together and discuss a new big budget superhero science-fiction blockbuster in the works and their difference of opinions on the topic. Valentine thoughtfully supports and defends the underlying nature of the genre and its themes while Maria can only laugh and mock the over-the-top, often cheesy superficial appearance of the genre, which she clearly discredits.

Continuing this string of underlying subsurface themes, Maria gradually proves herself to be the quintessential self-indulgent elitist, the type who is concerns with herself and her own life before all else. Manners and compassion for other matter only when convenient for her, but these less desirable traits are subtle and not forthright enough to make her a villain, only occasionally uneasy to like. On the other hand, there are moments when the generational and cultural gap present themselves in reality as well as fiction. For example, when Maria and Valentine take a dip in a lake amongst the mountains, its the aging, not as fit as she once was Binoche that strips down to her full birthday suit, whereas the younger and still more conventionally desirable Stewart who chooses to swim in her panties and bra. This is not to say she should have stripped down as well, but what does this say about the generational and cultural difference in how we see ourselves? I do not believe this was a choice by the character, but rather by the actors.

CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA ultimately proves to be an interesting, if somewhat uneven character study that occasionally gets lost within itself. Accompanied by a score that is curiously engaging and eclectic and some immensely beautiful scenic landscapes, the film is certainly not a disappointment, but also does not quite live up to its own potential.

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Two Dollars! John Cusack is BETTER OFF DEAD Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

betteroffdead-header

“Now that’s a real shame when folks be throwin’ away a perfectly good white boy like that!”

Better-Off-Dead2
BETTER OFF DEAD plays midnights this weekend (May 1st and 2nd) at the Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series (and tickets are 8 dollars, not 2!).

betteroffdead2_
In BETTER OFF DEAD (1984), John Cusack plays Lane, a loser who has just lost his girlfriend and tries several times to attempt suicide to escape his miserable life. Of course he fails with hilarious results and finds reason to live in the hopes of getting her back while unwittingly falling in love with a French foreign exchange student (the super-sexy Dinae Franklin). BETTER OFF DEAD contains lots of standard ‘80s teen themes; The Girl you want. The Car you want. Parents that are just plain weird. The Guy that is better (or so you think) than you. The Job you hate. The younger brother that seems to have it all going on. A lot is happening in the side plots like the mailman who sorts your mail for you. The paperboy mafia who wants his $2., etc. The animation scenes are great in a crude sorta way. Anyone who had a mother who was not a great or even good cook can find the humor in the Christmas exchange scene or the scene where the green goop crawls off the plate and our hero Lane Meyer has to be excused. There’s way too much going on in this movie to convey the total greatness of the whole interconnected plots in less than the required 1000 words. I would still consider this a fun date movie even now, so get a date and head over to the Tivoli Theater this weekend for the midnight show of BETTER OFF DEAD.

Ridley Scott’s THE MARTIAN Highlight of 20th Century Fox’s CinemaCon 2015 Event

martian

Following the exciting presentation at CinemaCon last week, 20th Century Fox released some new details for their upcoming releases. Check out the official synopses along with some photos for all their 2015 and 2016 films.

The highlight of the event was the must-see film of 2015 – Ridley Scott’s THE MARTIAN.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.

Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

Described by io9 as “amazing,” the audience assembled saw the first scenes from the movie. “The footage cuts from famous face to famous face, everyone preparing for a massive NASA launch, and the screen fills with glorious images from the red planet (this is directed by Ridley Scott, after all). It’s truly beautiful.”
