Big Highlights From The 89th Oscars – MOONLIGHT, LA LA LAND, Jimmy Kimmel, Viola Davis

“This is not a joke. MOONLIGHT has won Best Picture. “Moonlight,” Best Picture [He holds up the card announcing the winner]”

After the “Cinderella, little-movie-that-could, made for only $1.5M with zero stars,” won Best Picture at the 89th Oscars, MOONLIGHT easily became our first pick of one of the many highlights from Sunday’s show.

Back in the pressroom director/producer Barry Jenkins said about the mixup, “No explanation. Things just happen, you know? But I will say I saw two cards. And so things just happen, you know? I did ‑‑ but ‑‑ and because ‑‑ I wanted to see the card to see the card. And Warren refused to show the card to anybody before he showed it to me. And so he did. He came upstairs, and he walked over to me, and he ‑‑ he showed the card. Everybody was asking, Can I see the card? And he’s like, No, Barry Jenkins has to see the card. I need him to know. And he showed it to me, and I felt better about what had happened. I will say to all you people, please write this down: The folks from LA LA LAND were so gracious. I can’t imagine being in their position and having to do that. We spent a lot of time together over the last six months, and I can’t imagine being in their position and having to do that. So it’s why ‑‑ I wasn’t speechless because we won. I was speechless because I ‑‑ it was so gracious of them to do that.” He went onto add “it’s unfortunate that things happened the way they did. But hot damn, we won Best Picture.” – Barry Jenkins, director of MOONLIGHT.”

Oscar producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd announced the final slate of presenters for the 89th Oscars telecast. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the Oscars will air live Sunday, February 26, on the ABC Television Network. The presenters, including past Oscar winners and nominees, are Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Warren Beatty, Sofia Boutella, Matt Damon, Faye Dunaway, Michael J. Fox, Ryan Gosling, Salma Hayek, Taraji P. Henson, Dev Patel, Seth Rogen, Octavia Spencer, Meryl Streep and Vince Vaughn.

Previously announced presenters include Amy Adams, Riz Ahmed, Javier Bardem, Halle Berry, John Cho, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Dornan, Chris Evans, Gael García Bernal, Samuel L. Grammy and Tony nominated singer and songwriter Sara Bareilles will deliver a special “In Memoriam” performance during the 89th Oscars ceremony, show producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd announced.

“Sara’s unique artistry will honor those we’ve lost in our community including familiar faces and those behind the scenes who have enriched the art of moviemaking,” De Luca and Todd said.

Following Bareilles’ “in memoriam” performance, an extended photo gallery of more than 200 filmmakers, artists and executives will be recognized on Oscar.com.

Bareilles first achieved mainstream critical praise in 2007 with “Love Song,” from her debut album “Little Voice.” The single reached No. 1 in 22 countries. Since then she has received six Grammy nominations, which include Song of the Year, Female Pop Vocal Performance and Album of the Year for her highly acclaimed studio album, “The Blessed Unrest”. Her book, Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) In Song, was released in 2015 by Simon & Schuster and was a New York Times best seller. Bareilles composed the music and lyrics for “Waitress,” receiving a Tony Award nomination for Original Score and a Grammy nomination for Musical Theater Album. Bareilles makes her Broadway acting debut in “Waitress.”

Upon recommendation by the Sound Branch Executive Committee, the Academy’s Board of Governors voted Thursday (2/23) to rescind the Sound Mixing nomination for Greg P. Russell from “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi” for violation of Academy campaign regulations. The decision was prompted by the discovery that Russell had called his fellow members of the Sound Branch during the nominations phase to make them aware of his work on the film, in direct violation of a campaign regulation that prohibits telephone lobbying. An additional nominee for “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi” will not be named in his place. The remaining Sound Mixing nominees for the film are Gary Summers, Jeffrey J. Haboush and Mac Ruth.

“The Board of Governors’ decision to rescind Mr. Russell’s nomination was made after careful consideration,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “The Academy takes very seriously the Oscars voting process and anything – no matter how well-intentioned – that may undermine the integrity of that process.”

The Board determined that Russell’s actions violated a campaign regulation that unequivocally prohibits telephone lobbying. It states that “contacting Academy members by telephone to promote a film or achievement is expressly forbidden, even if such contact is in the guise of checking to make sure a screener or other mailing was received.”

The members from each of the Academy’s branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, musicians, composers and lyricists vote the nominations for song and score.

During the nominations process, all 456 voting members of the Sound Branch received a reminder list of film titles eligible in the Sound Mixing category in order to vote.

The 89th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be broadcast live on the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST. The Oscars, produced by De Luca and Todd and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, also will be televised in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide. Additionally, “The Oscars: All Access” live stream from the red carpet and backstage will begin at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST on Oscar.com.

Red Carpet Rolled Out For 89th Oscars

Preparations for Hollywood’s biggest night were in full swing at Hollywood and Highland for the 89th Oscars for outstanding film achievements of 2016.

Presented on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at the Dolby Theatre and televised live by the ABC Television Network, the press risers, fan bleachers and pre-show stages along the Oscars red carpet were assembled amid a flurry of photographers.

It takes approximately 270 crew members to broadcast the Academy Awards to more than 225 countries around the globe.

The number of Red Carpet bleacher seats for lucky film fans is 735. Some Oscar trivia – there have been 3,048 Oscar statuettes presented since the first Oscars. A stylized figure of a knight holding a crusader’s sword standing on a reel of film with five spokes signifying the five original branches of the Academy (actors, directors, producers, technicians and writers). No model was used during the design process.

Jimmy Kimmel will be host to the 89th Oscars. Bob Hope holds the record with 19 host
appearances.

89th Academy Awards Governors Ball Preview

On Thursday, The Academy opened the doors to the Ray Dolby Ballroom for a preview of the Governors Ball that will follow the 89th Oscars. This year’s theme is “transformation” which guests will see as they pass through a sea of red in the patio entrance into a huge white space full of gold and red decoration. Above, they’ll see lighted, gold clouds and across from the entrance, an elaborate, floating stage where singer-songwriter Cynthia Erivo will perform.

Academy governor Jeffrey Kurland, event producer Cheryl Cecchetto and master chef Wolfgang Puck will return to create this year’s Governors Ball, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ official post-Oscar celebration, which will immediately follow the 89th Oscars ceremony on Sunday, February 26. The Ball’s 1,500 invited guests include Oscar winners and nominees, show presenters and other telecast participants.

Piper-Heidsieck Champagne will be served from limited-edition magnums with an exclusive red carpet-inspired design made specially for the ball. Benoit Collard, Piper’s global executive director revealed they have signed on for another 3 years and when asked about what happens to any leftover bottles, he said that last year, Eva Longoria obtained one for a charity auction.

Wine drinkers will be treated to 2 limited edition wines from the Francis Ford Coppola Winery featuring commemorative labels. Cocktails will be provided by The Hillhaven Lodge.

Wolfgang Puck Catering continues to be a fixture at the ball and he was there to promote the extensive menu he created with his team. He even brought a machine that extracts and distills carrot juice for the pasta sauce!

For the 23rd consecutive year, legendary chef Wolfgang Puck will set the stage with a Governors Ball menu pairing Hollywood glamour with culinary whimsy. Eric Klein, the new Wolfgang Puck Catering executive chef, worked alongside Puck to create more than 50 imaginative dishes, from one-bite hors d’oeuvres to small-plate entrees that will be passed throughout the evening. New menu items will include Moroccan spiced Wagyu short rib topped with a parmesan funnel cake; taro root tacos with shrimp, mango, avocado and chipotle aioli; gnocchetti with braised mushrooms and cashew cream; lobster corn dogs; made-to-order sushi, custom poke bowls and an array of shellfish; plus a selection of Puck’s signature dishes such as smoked salmon Oscars, chicken pot pie with shaved black truffles, and baked macaroni and cheese. The pastry team of Kamel Guechida, Monica Ng and Jason Lemmonier will offer a dessert menu brimming with innovative and playful desserts served at multiple dessert stations, plus the ultimate dessert buffet featuring Puck’s sought-after 24-karat-gold chocolate Oscars. Wolfgang Puck Catering CEO Carl Schuster will direct more than 900 event staff through the evening’s intricately detailed logistics to deliver guests a true restaurant-style hospitality experience.

One interesting change this year will involve the envelopes opened during the awards. The publicity department gave We Are Movie Geeks a scoop: there will be new envelopes this year designed by their in-house marketing department. Be sure to look for them on Oscar Sunday!

In the week leading up to the 89th Oscars, beginning on Tuesday February 21st, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a series of public programs celebrating this year’s nominees in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Foreign Language Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Animated and Live Action Short Film categories. All events will be held at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sting, Justin Timberlake, John Legend To Perform At 89th Oscars

Oscar nominees Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sting, Justin Timberlake and 2014 Oscar winner John Legend will perform at the 89th Oscars ceremony, show producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd announced today. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the Oscars will air live on Sunday, February 26, on the ABC Television Network.

“We’re thrilled to welcome these world-class artists to the Oscars. These performances will not only celebrate the five extraordinary nominated original songs, but also the integral part music plays in movies,” De Luca and Todd said.

Auli’i Cravalho will join Miranda to perform his Oscar-nominated song, “How Far I’ll Go,” written for “Moana.” An actor, playwright and composer, Miranda is best known for creating and starring in the Broadway musicals “Hamilton” and “In the Heights.” For his work, he has been recognized with a Primetime Emmy Award^®, three Tony Awards^®, two Grammy Awards^® and the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama (“Hamilton”). This marks Miranda’s debut on the Oscars stage. Sixteen-year-old Cravalho made her film debut voicing the title character in “Moana.”

Seventeen-time Grammy winner Sting will perform “The Empty Chair” from “Jim: The James Foley Story,” the Oscar nominated song he co-wrote with three-time Oscar nominee J. Ralph. In addition to this current nomination, Sting has been nominated in this category on three previous occasions; “You Will Be My Ain True Love” from “Cold Mountain” (2003), “Until” from “Kate & Leopold” (2001) and “My Funny Friend And Me” from “The Emperor’s New Groove” (2000), which he shared with David Hartley. A 2014 Kennedy Center Honoree, Sting has sold over 100 million records.

Timberlake will perform his Oscar-nominated song “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from the movie “Trolls.” He shares music and lyric credits with Max Martin and Karl Johan Schuster. Timberlake is a multi-platinum recording artist and actor whose numerous awards include nine Grammy Awards and four Primetime Emmy Awards. His acting credits include the Oscar-winning film “The Social Network” (2010) and Oscar-nominated “Inside Llewyn Davis” (2013).

Legend will perform both “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” and “City of Stars,” from “La La Land,” music by Justin Hurwitz; lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. A singer-songwriter, musician and actor, Legend won an Oscar for the original song “Glory” from “Selma” (2014), an honor he shared with artist Common. Legend’s many accolades also include 10 Grammy Awards and 28 nominations.

The Academy Announces Leonardo DiCaprio, Brie Larson, Mark Rylance, Alicia Vikander As Presenters For Oscars

Academy Award® winners Leonardo DiCaprio, Brie Larson, Mark Rylance and Alicia Vikander will present at the 89th Oscars, show producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd announced today. All return to the Oscars stage after winning last year in their respective acting categories. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the Oscars will air live on Sunday, February 26, on the ABC Television Network.

DiCaprio won last year for Actor in a Leading Role for “The Revenant.” He was previously nominated for his performances in “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013), for which he also received a Best Picture nomination, “Blood Diamond” (2006), “The Aviator” (2004) and “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993). His film credits also include “The Great Gatsby” (2013), “Django Unchained” (2012) and “J. Edgar” (2011).

Larson’s performance in “Room” earned her an Oscar for Actress in a Leading Role. She has also appeared in “Trainwreck” (2015) and “Short Term 12” (2013). Her upcoming films include “Captain Marvel,” “Kong: Skull Island,” “The Glass Castle” and “Unicorn Store.”

Rylance won for Actor in a Supporting Role for “Bridge of Spies.” His other film credits include “The BFG” (2016) and the upcoming features “Dunkirk” and “Ready Player One.” A prolific stage actor, he earned Tony Awards for his performances in “Twelfth Night,” “Jerusalem” and “Boeing-Boeing.”

Vikander won for Actress in a Supporting Role for “The Danish Girl.” Her recent film credits include “The Light between Oceans” (2016), “Jason Bourne” (2016), “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” (2015) and “Ex Machina” (2015). Her upcoming films include “Euphoria,” “Submergence” and “Tomb Raider.”

89th Oscar Nominations Of All 24 Categories To Feature Global Announcement On Tuesday Morning

One of the biggest days in Hollywood is at hand.

The 89th Oscars Nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 24. Coverage begins at 5:18 a.m. PST / 8:18 a.m. EST.

To help guide this year’s nominees through the 33 days between the nominations announcement and the Oscars ceremony, the Academy invited 11 Oscar-winning and nominated Academy members to share personal anecdotes about their Oscars experience and offer advice to the new class of nominees about this life-changing moment.

Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs will be joined by Demian Bichir, Dustin Lance Black, Glenn Close, Guillermo del Toro, Marcia Gay Harden, Terrence Howard, Jennifer Hudson, Brie Larson, Jason Reitman, Gabourey Sidibe and Ken Watanabe. These talented artists and filmmakers were filmed in six different cities around the globe—Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Toronto, London and Tokyo.

The pre-taped video footage will be edited together with voiceover and graphics announcing the nominations in all 24 award categories. In keeping with tradition, PwC will deliver the Oscars Nominations list to the Academy this evening, January 23.

145 Film Scores In Running For 89th Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 145 scores from eligible feature-length motion pictures released in 2016 are in contention for nominations in the Original Score category for the 89th Academy Awards.

A Reminder List of works submitted in the Original Score category will be made available with a nominations ballot to all members of the Music Branch, who shall vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements. The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award.

To be eligible, the original score must be a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring, and must be written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer. Scores diluted by the use of preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs or any music not composed specifically for the film by the submitting composer, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible.

Nominations for the 89th Oscars will be announced on Tuesday, January 24, 2017.

Jimmy Kimmel Hosting 89th Oscars

Late-night talk show host, producer and comedian Jimmy Kimmel confirmed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” that he will host the 89th Oscars to be broadcast live on Oscar Sunday, February 26, 2017, on the ABC Television Network.

This is Kimmel’s first time hosting the global telecast.

“Mike and Jennifer have an excellent plan and their enthusiasm is infectious,” said Kimmel. “I am honored to have been chosen to host the 89th and final Oscars.”

“Jimmy’s ability to connect with people is what makes him a singular choice for this job,” said producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd. “His frank observations, relatable persona, wry humor and love of all kinds of film make him a natural fit for the Oscars stage.”

“Jimmy has the qualities of all the great hosts,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “He knows who he is, he knows the audience and he knows how to captain a ship with many moving parts. We’re thrilled he has agreed to host our show.”

Kimmel serves as host and executive producer of the Emmy-winning “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” ABC’s longest running late-night talk show. Now in its 14th season, “JKL” has earned six Emmy nominations in the Outstanding Variety Series Talk category, the Writing for a Variety Series category, and the Variety, Music or Comedy Series category.

Several of the films have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying run. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and comply with all of the category’s other qualifying rules before they can advance in the voting process. Depending on the number of films that qualify, two to five nominees may be voted. Sixteen or more films must qualify for the maximum of five nominees to be voted.

Films submitted in the Animated Feature Film category also may qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture, provided they meet the requirements for those categories.
