Giallo is the Italian mystery/horror genre that was most prominent in the 1970’s. It takes its name from the term for the mystery novels being published in Italy around the same time. These novels had yellow covers (Giallo is Italian for “Yellow.”) The films eventually gained a reputation for gratuitous violence and sexuality and their murder scenes served as a big influence on the American Slasher film. The genre has its greats, as well as its fair share of duds. If you’re unfamiliar with Giallo, DEATH WALKS ON HIGH HEELS, from 1971, is an excellent introduction.

A famed jewel thief named Rochard is slashed to death on a train. The police question Rochard’s daughter Nicole (Susan Scott), a famous nightclub performer in Paris, about missing diamonds.  A masked man begins to terrorize Nicole demanding to know where her father has hidden the stolen diamonds

You may think that you know where DEATH WALKS ON HIGH HEELS is headed, and Luciano Ercoli does direct with style to spare, but trust me, you’ll be dead wrong. A shocking twist around halfway through DEATH WALKS ON HIGH HEELS really does pull the rug out from the viewer’s expectations here, sending us into very strange and uncharted waters. Writer Ernesto Gastaldi provided us with an ingeniously plotted story that hangs together marvelously composer Stelvio Cipriani, contributed a chic and catchy score; and some great-looking lensing of Paris, London and the English countryside provides some elegant backdrops for the film’s very sinister doings. Add some touches of welcome humor, one genuinely nasty slice-and-dice sequence for the gorehounds, and some fairly brutal fisticuffs at the film’s conclusion and you have one extremely satisfying giallo indeed. Good luck trying to figure out the killer’s identity  when it screens Wednesday, June 1st at Schlafly Bottleworks Restaurant and Bar in Maplewood (7260 Southwest Ave.- at Manchester – Maplewood, MO 63143) as part of their Strange Brew film series . The movie starts at 8pm and admission is $5. A yummy variety of food from Schlafly’s kitchen is available as are plenty of pints of their famous home-brewed beer.
