CHEAP TRICK LIVE AT BUDOKAN! May 4th at Schlafly Bottleworks – Strange Brew
CHEAP TRICK LIVE AT BUDOKAN! Screens at 8pm Wednesday May 4th at Schlafly Bottleworks as part of Webster University’s Strange Brew Film Series.
In honor of the induction of Cheap Trick into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, the Webster University Film Series Strange Brew cult film program is hosting a special screening of “Cheap Trick at Budokan!” at Schlafly Bottleworks on Wednesday, May 4 at 8:00pm.
Despite being a popular midwest band, Rockford, Illinois’ Cheap Trick didn’t find fame in the United States until they made it big in Japan in the late ’70s. The rarely-seen Budokan footage, which captured their complete Tokyo concert on April 28, 1978, was only originally screened just one time on Japanese television until it was finally released 30 years later to American audiences to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the famous “Budokan” live album. The performance finds the band completely surprised by the 12,000 screaming Japanese fans, as they play through now-iconic versions of “Surrender” and “I Want You To Want Me.” The band orginially released the performance as a Japanese-only import album called “From Tokyo to You,” but it quickly became so popular that Epic Records released it domestically in 1979, with it eventually going on to sell over three million copies. The film is a rare glimpse into an energetic performance that created what is now considered one of the greatest live Rock and Roll albums of all time!
After the main film, they will also screen a 20-minute documentary called “Looking Back,” where the band discusses how “Budokan” impacted their career.
