Happy New Year 2014

happynewyear

As Bing Crosby sang in HOLIDAY INN…

Kissing the old year out
Kissing the new year in

Let’s watch the old year die
With a fond good-bye
And our hopes as high
As a kite

How can our love go wrong if
We start the new year right?

As we say so long to 2013, here’s a look back on the past year in film.

Happy New Year and Cheers From WAMG! We wish you all the best in 2014!

THE WIND RISES

The Wind Rises

In THE WIND RISES, Jiro (voice of Joseph Gordon-Levitt) dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni (voice of Stanley Tucci). Nearsighted from a young age and unable to be a pilot, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and becomes one of the world’s most innovative and accomplished airplane designers. The film chronicles much of his life, depicting key historical events, including the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic and Japan’s plunge into war. Jiro meets and falls in love with Nahoko (voice of Emily Blunt), and grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjo (voice of John Krasinski). Writer and director Hayao Miyazaki pays tribute to engineer Jiro Horikoshi and author Tatsuo Hori in this epic tale of love, perseverance, and the challenges of living and making choices in a turbulent world.

From Studio Ghibli, THE WIND RISES is slated for limited release in North American theaters on Feb. 21, 2014, and expanded release on Feb. 28, 2014, under the Touchstone Pictures banner.

NEED FOR SPEED

Need for Speed

The film centers around Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul), a blue-collar mechanic who races muscle cars on the side in an unsanctioned street-racing circuit. Struggling to keep his family-owned garage afloat, he reluctantly partners with the wealthy and arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). But just as a major sale to car broker Julia Maddon (Imogen Poots) looks like it will save Tobey’s shop, a disastrous race allows Dino to frame Tobey for a crime he didn’t commit, and sending Tobey to prison while Dino expands his business out West.

Two years later, Tobey is released and set on revenge — but he knows his only chance to take down his rival Dino is to defeat him in the high-stakes race known as De Leon — the Super Bowl of underground racing. However to get there in time, Tobey will have to run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet that includes dodging pursuing cops coast-to-coast as well as contending with a dangerous bounty Dino has put out on his car. With the help of his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.

NEED FOR SPEED is presented by DreamWorks Pictures, produced by Patrick O’Brien, John Gatins and Mark Sourian, and directed by Scott Waugh. The screenplay is by George Gatins. The story is by George Gatins & John Gatins, and, based on the video game series created by Electronic Arts.

INTO THE WOODS

Into the Woods

INTO THE WOODS is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lila Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy) – all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden and Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them.

Rob Marshall, the talented filmmaker behind the Oscar-winning CHICAGO and Disney’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, helms the film, which is based on the Tony-winning original musical by James Lapine, who also penned the screenplay, and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, who provides the music and lyrics – including an all-new song for the big screen adaptation.

The film is slated for a December 25, 2014, holiday release.

10 Worst Films of 2013

WORST2013 (1)

As we bid farewell to a year of unbelievable cinema, Hollywood truly gave the masses such diverse choices from which to plunk down their hard earned dollars for. Assuredly it was a record-breaking year at the global box office as well. According to the LA Times, 2013 ticket sales reportedly are projected to reach $10.9 billion. We still love going to the movies… especially the popular ones.

However, there’s always a few that we can’t quite avoid as well as a number of films that just disappoint. Our list for this year’s “worst films” seems to be chock-full of extremely disappointing titles.

DISHONORABLE MENTION: GANGSTER SQUAD

gangster squad

Even Ryan Gosling in some vintage suits and Emma Stone in a sexy red dress couldn’t help this by the books gangster flick.  All style and no substance is the name of this tune that we’ve heard and seen perform much better before.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

MAN OF STEEL

Warner Brothers seem to believe that dark, gritty, and grim is the only way to go with this reboot of comics’ first superhero. But what works for Batman doesn’t really jell with Superman. The planet Krypton becomes a barren landscape right out of THE MATRIX complete with weird CGI beasties and a confusing subplot involving the DNA “codex”. Once little Kal-El arrives on Earth, we’re denied seeing the Kents discover him and go right into Clark’s adolescence which appears to be a series of traumatic events and little joy.

There’s no real chemistry between Superman and Lois Lane despite the acting skills of Henry Cavill and Amy Adams. Once Zod and his crew arrive on Earth, the film devolves into an unending orgy of destruction. At least in MARVEL’S AVENGERS, the heroes made an effort to contain the battle (in 1981’s SUPERMAN II Kal took the fracas out of town), but here Metropolis is turned to rubble with countless off-screen lives lost while moviegoers were bombarded with constant product placement (“Pete Ross manages the IHOP!”).

Although it’s been out nearly six months, we’d best do a SPOILER ALERT: with the final insult being Kal’s decision to snap Zod’s neck in direct violation of the character’s ethics. Guess the screenwriter needed him to be “edgy”. SPOILER END. All of the proceedings are rendered with a cold, grey metallic sheen. Warners believed that the only way that Superman would work for today’s audiences is to drain him of any charm or wit.

MAN OF STEEL

10. SALINGER

salinger-photo-01-630-thumb-630xauto-41899

One of the most iconic and important literary figures of all time is spotlighted in one of the worst documentaries of the year.

9. THE COUNSELOR

counselor-brad-pitt-michael-fassbender

Given all of the talent involved on this film, you would think something better would come out of this overly verbose thriller where every character seems to talk in the same pseudo-philosophical manner.

8. MOVIE 43

Movie 43

Elizabeth Banks, Dennis Quaid, Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet… None of them could save the horror that is MOVIE 43. Originally meant to be a comedy, the short films that make up this flop are weird, disturbing, and just plain stupid. This film should only be viewed during interrogations. I guarantee, they will spill the beans to make this film stop.

7. ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH

All that’s awful in modern feature animation. Uninspired, hideously designed CGI characters voiced by an endless list of celebrity actors in a way over-complicated story that strains at the seams to be clever. The old “hey, it’s just for kids” is no excuse for this kind of junk.

6. SAFE HAVEN

SAFE HAVEN

Can we all just agree to leave Nicholas Sparks books alone? Sure, his books might make for a romantic read, but the film adaptations are such a bummer. Let me recap every Nicholas Sparks movie so that we can all stop wasting our time. Love is always some ridiculous roller coaster ride that seems impossible, and never-ending, the poster is almost always the same shot of two people about to kiss, some sort of illness or accident will come out of left field in order to send the audience into a whirlwind of tears, and finally… someone always dies. There you go. You never have to sit through one of these movies again! You’re welcome.

5. STAND-UP GUYS

Stand-up-Guys_560

Never before have we watched a comedy with so many flat jokes and bad one-liners. For a film that is riddled with way too many Viagra jokes, it’s quite ironic that this movie is far from stimulating.

4. AFTER EARTH

1108146 - After Earth

Another epic dud in the downward career trajectory of M. Night Shymalan. The big twist here isn’t at the end. It’s the fact that a bait and switch was pulled so that audiences thinking they were getting a Will Smith SF actioner got one with his son Jaden instead.

3. GROWN-UPS 2

Adam Sandler;Chris Rock;David Spade;Nick Swardson;Kevin James

GROWN UPS 2 was even lazier and dumber than its predecessor. It’s worse than most comedy sequels, worse than most Adam Sandler movies, and worse than most types of cancer. It probably contained a higher percentage of gags involving burps, barfing, urine, excrement, and farting than any other recent Hollywood product, which is saying quite a lot. Too bad it wasn’t funny.

2. R.I.P.D.

RIPD

A blatant rip-off of a franchise that itself sputtered after its first entry, Hollywood couldn’t resist this MEN IN BLACK in the hereafter. Well, luckily, movie audiences could and did resist. Jeff Bridges dusts off his Rooster Cogburn drawl, while Ryan Reynolds wonders why he tackled another comic book-based flick after GREEN LANTERN.

1. GETAWAY

GETAWAY

GETAWAY tried hard for B-movie status but is but it was joyless and tiring, the type of utterly bad action nonsense that could not have even looked good on paper.  Salena Gomez gave the shrillest, surliest, and simply most abysmal performance of 2013.

The Amazing Spider-Man Swings Into Times Square For New Year’s Eve Celebration As Official Super Hero of Times Square 2014

SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT SPIDER-MAN IN TIMES SQUARE FOR NEW YEAR'S EVE CELEBRATION

Spider-Man, New York’s very own super hero, has been named the Official Super Hero of Times Square 2014.  He will take part in the Ball Drop celebration, and events leading up to the big night in a partnership with the upcoming movie THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2.

Across the globe, Spider-Man fans will get a preview of the excitement awaiting them at the box office in 2014. On New Year’s Eve, an exclusive clip featuring a sneak peek of the film’s Times Square sequence will debut on the district’s iconic video screens, as well as in the evening’s broadcast pool feed and live webcast.

Watch the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration live for all the fun beginning at 5:55 p.m. ET December 31 at www.livestream.com/2014.

“There’s no celebration like New Year’s Eve in Times Square,” said Marc Webb, Director of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. “There’s the sense of energy and excitement that you can only get in New York and we certainly felt that energy and excitement as we shot the entire film here. The people of New York City truly embraced our production, and it’s a wonderful feeling to be returning to Times Square to ring in the New Year.”

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield).  For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone).  But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city.  With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

First evolved from a Stephen King novel into a film in 1976, and back to film again in 2013, Carrie just keeps coming! Carrie is a remake of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom. To get you ready for Carrie’s third debut into the world, we have compiled a list of memorable moments from the originally Carrie to help jog your memory… and maybe scare you a little bit.

The shower of death?

When Carrie is showering at school she is hit with her first period at age 17. She freaks out because her mother has never talked to her about these womanly changes (I guess that’s why they have health class nowadays). Carrie thinks that she is literally bleeding to death, until all the mean girls start throwing tampons at her.

Big news times 2

When Carrie decides to tell her mom that she is going to prom, and oh by the way, casually thinks she has telekinesis, her mother automatically thinks she a witch.

Bloody hell

Carrie ends up going to the prom and actually is having a fun time. Things seem to be going too well, which clearly means someone is up to something. A bucket of pigs blood is dumped onto Carrie’s head as she is crowned prom queen and her telekinesis takes over, killing almost everyone in the gym.

Mother Daughter Bonding

Carrie runs home and cries to her mother, expecting some sort of sympathy or motherly advice. It is now that Carrie’s mother hugs her in an effort to comfort her, but then literally stabs her in the back.

Bringing down the house

In reaction to her mother stabbing her, Carrie begins to fight back and crucifies her mother with knives. Carrie begins to feel bad about what she has done (at least she has a conscious?) but it’s too late and the house collapses.
