Beverly Hills, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present its inaugural Governors Awards Film Series, featuring screenings of “The Exorcist,” “The Color Purple,” and “The Great White Hope,” from Wednesday, November 9, to Friday, November 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The evenings celebrate the achievements of the 2011 Honorary Award recipients, actor James Earl Jones and motion picture makeup pioneer Dick Smith, and the 2011 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award recipient, actress and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey.

The series schedule is as follows:

November 9: “The Exorcist” (1973). This cultural touchstone showcases Dick Smith’s groundbreaking makeup designs, including 14-year-old Linda Blair’s satanic transformation. Introduced by Academy governor Leonard Engelman, the evening will feature Smith in person as well as remarks from special effects makeup artist Rick Baker and cinematographer Owen Roizman. While “The Exorcist” received 10 Oscar® nominations, including Best Picture, Smith himself was not formally recognized for his remarkable work, as the Academy Awards® Makeup category would not be established until 1981.

November 10: “The Color Purple” (1985). One of today’s most influential figures in entertainment and philanthropy, Oprah Winfrey received a Supporting Actress nomination for her performance as Sofia in this 11-time Oscar-nominated film. Academy President Tom Sherak will introduce the evening, which will feature remarks from fellow nominee Margaret Avery, who played Shug Avery in the film, and a video message from 2009 nominee Gabourey Sidibe. Sidibe’s breakthrough performance came as the title character in “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” which Winfrey executive produced.

November 11: “The Great White Hope” (1970). James Earl Jones won a Tony® Award as boxer Jack Johnson in The Great White Hope on Broadway, and two years later, earned an Oscar nomination for his performance in the big screen adaptation. Introduced by Academy President Tom Sherak, the evening will feature remarks from Phillip Noyce, who directed Jones in “Patriot Games” and “Clear and Present Danger,” and actor Courtney B. Vance, a co-star in “The Hunt for Red October.”

The week will culminate in the Academy’s 3rd Annual Governors Awards presentation on Saturday, November 12, at which Jones will be honored “for his legacy of consistent excellence and uncommon versatility,” Smith “for his unparalleled mastery of texture, shade, form and illusion,” and Winfrey “for efforts that promote hope around the world and goodwill for the film industry.” All three will receive Oscar statuettes.

Tickets for each screening in the Governors Awards Film Series are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. Tickets may be purchased starting Tuesday, November 1, online at www.oscars.org and by mail.

The Samuel Goldwyn Theater is located at 8949 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. All seating is unreserved. For more information, call (310) 247-3600 or visit www.oscars.org.

THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (FULL SEQUENCE) | Now On SundanceNOW While Still In Theaters

Just in time for Halloween, one of the year’s most controversial movies, THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE 2 (Full Sequence), is now available on SundanceNOW.com while it is still in theaters. Too terrified to check it out in theaters? Now you can watch one of the most harrowing and terrifying films ever conceived, featuring a central character that makes FIRST SEQUENCE’s Dr. Heiter seem downright cuddly in comparison, from the comfort of home.

What better way to spend Halloween than with Martin, a mentally disturbed loner so obsessed with THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (First Sequence) that he sets into motion a plan to emulate Heiter’s centipede by creating his own longer version. But Martin lacks the surgical skill, medical instruments and operating theater necessary to create a larger centipede in the image of Dr. Heiter’s masterpiece, so he makes use of materials at hand: duct tape, staple gun, household tools and fanboy moxie.

MEET MARTIN…

Martin is a mentally disturbed loner who lives with his nagging mother in a bleak London housing project, where loud neighbors and cramped living conditions threaten to plunge this victim of sexual and psychological abuse over the edge.

He works the night shift as a security guard in an underground parking garage, where customers and their vehicles come and go as he indulges his obsession with THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (FIRST SEQUENCE) watching the film over and over on the small TV set in his office and meticulously examining the scrapbook he has lovingly filled with memorabilia from the film.

Pushed to the brink by his harridan mother, haunted by the teasing voices of his abusive and incarcerated father, Martin sets into motion his plan to emulate Heiter’s centipede by creating his own version, in a rented warehouse, which he begins to fill with victims.

What follows is one of the most harrowing and terrifying films ever conceived, featuring a central character that makes FIRST SEQUENCE’s Dr. Heiter seem downright cuddly in comparison. THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (FINAL SEQUENCE) is a triumph in biological horror by one of the new masters of the horror film.

Starring: Laurence R. Harvey, Ashlynn Yennie, Dominic Borrelli, and Vivien Bridson
Directed by: Tom Six

NOTE : This film is being released unrated and contains very graphic and disturbing imagery.

PARANORMAN Trailer Debuts

In what’s sure to have you chuckling this Friday before All Hallows Eve, ghosts and zombies go bump in the night in the first trailer for the comedy thriller PARANORMAN, coming to theaters in 3D on August 17, 2012. In Laika’s follow-up to CORALINE, a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee, LET ME IN), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, moronic grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.

The voice cast includes Academy Award nominee Casey Affleck (THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD), Tempestt Bledsoe (The Cosby Show), Jeff Garlin (Toy Story 3), John Goodman (MONSTERS, INC.), Bernard Hill (TITANIC), Academy Award nominee Anna Kendrick (UP IN THE AIR), Leslie Mann (RIO), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON), Tucker Albrizzi (GOOD LUCK CHARLIE), Alex Borstein (Family Guy), Jodelle Ferland (THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE) and Tony and Emmy Award winner Elaine Stritch (30 Rock).

Source: Yahoo! Movies

Following the groundbreaking CORALINE, PARANORMAN is only the second stop-motion animated feature to be made in 3D. As on CORALINE, Focus Features will hold worldwide distribution rights to the film, and Universal Pictures International will release it overseas.

PARANORMAN is being directed by Sam Fell and Chris Butler, from Mr. Butler’s original screenplay. Mr. Fell was director of THE  TALE OF DESPEREAUX and FLUSHED AWAY. Mr. Butler was storyboard supervisor on CORALINE and storyboard artist on Tim Burton’s CORPSE BRIDE. Arianne Sutner, animation producer on THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU, and Travis Knight are producing PARANORMAN. Academy Award winner Brian Van’t Hul (KING KONG, CORALINE) is the movie’s visual effects supervisor; Emmy Award winner Nelson Lowry (FANTASTIC MR. FOX, Tim Burton’s CORPSE BRIDE) is its production designer; Grammy Award Nominee Jon Brion is composing the score (ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND); and Tristan Oliver (FANTASTIC MR. FOX, the Academy Award-winning Wallace & Gromit in THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT) is the director of photography on PARANORMAN.

SYNOPSIS

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games.  Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy.  If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, with a screenplay by Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins and Billy Ray, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik.  Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 12 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following. It has spent more than 157 consecutive weeks/more than three consecutive years to date on The New York Times bestseller list since its publication in September 2008, and has also appeared consistently on USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.
