FREAKY – Review

(from left) The Butcher (Vince Vaughn) and Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton) in Freaky, co-written and directed by Christopher Landon.

FRIDAY THE 13TH meets FREAKY FRIDAY in the Vince Vaughn comedic mashup FREAKY, from director Christopher Landon (HAPPY DEATH DAY). It seems an unlikely pair of “Friday” movies and, really, it is the whole genre of teen horror films rather than just the one film. The parody mines the same comedy vein as the SCREAM and SCARY MOVIE series but here mixed up with another Hollywood favorite, the switched-body comedy.

When another teen and her friends are brutally murdered, 17-year-old Millie (Kathryn Newton) and the rest of Blissville Valley High School know that the Blissville Butcher of urban legend has returned, just as Homecoming approaches.

Packed with winking horror film and sexual references, the humor is broad and sure to delight fans of high school horror. While FREAKY FRIDAY was a family film, FREAKY’s R rating allows it to go full bore on the gore as well as the dark humor. There is a certain amount of fun in watching Vince Vaughn play a teen-aged girl, including the expected man-in-a-woman’s-body and vice versa bits. The comedy packs in as many winking sex jokes as possible, including the team mascot of the high school, the Beaver.

Horror comedy is a genre topped by clever stand-outs like SHAUN OF THE DEAD and fan-fav parody series like SCREAM and SCARY MOVIE. FREAKY leans a bit more to the latter style, but the best of them look beyond just parody of the genre’s tropes, and bring something fresh to the characters and upended expectations. High school scary movies have been well-mined by previous spoof series but plenty of movies have also made use of both the body-switch and gender-switch plot devices. That means the humor in this parody has been well-explored, which means its success falls heavily on the cast to bring the laughs. Apart from the clever title, this well-tilled landscape does not leave a lot for Vince Vaughn and the rest of the cast to work with.

Once FREAKY runs through all the gender-switch jokes and tilted scary movie references, the comedy rests mostly on Vaughn’s blushing shy girl bit. Like all good gender-switch films, it does offer commentary on inequality, scenes that Vaughn handles particularly well as the teen girl who suddenly finds herself in the body of a six-foot-five middle-aged man, with all the change in power that implies. Vaughn is both funny and thought-provoking.

The reversed role works less well, though through no fault of young Kathryn Newton Part of the problem is that Kathryn Newton, as shy, bullied Millie, seems too beautiful to be convincing as a nerdy girl that boys never notice. When she trades bodies with the villain, it is less shocking because that confident, empowered part actually seems a better fit. Still Newton brings some fun and glee to her mayhem as the killer discovers the power of distraction in looking like one of his victims.

The films also has the requisite rich girl getting her punishment, a horror film staple, and the high schooler who faces off with the killer has the requisite besties as well. In this case, her pals are a sweet Black girl Nyla (Celeste O’Connor), and a somewhat snarky gay guy Joshua (Misha Osherovich), who plays the sassy friend role. The part also gives the film a safe place to explore the inherent gay undercurrents of the romantic scenes between the girl in Vaughn’s body and her crush Booker (Uriah Shelton).

The film’s score is from composer Bear McCreary (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Outlander, Happy Death Day).

FREAKY is most entertaining for fans of the teen horror comedy but has moderate comedic appeal even if one isn’t, largely thanks to Vince Vaughn. FREAKY opens in theaters only on Friday, Nov. 13.

ARKANSAS starring Liam Hemsworth and Vince Vaughn Available On Apple, Amazon, On Demand Platforms, Blu-ray and DVD May 5th

In Clark Duke’s directorial debut ARKANSAS, Kyle (Liam Hemsworth) and Swin (Clark Duke) live by the orders of an Arkansas-based drug kingpin named Frog (Vince Vaughn), whom they’ve never met. Posing as junior park rangers by day, they operate as low-level drug couriers by night under the watchful eye of Frog’s proxies (John Malkovich and Vivica A. Fox). Swin then settles into his day job by taking up a relationship with Johnna (Eden Brolin) against orders to blend in while Kyle continues to question his night job by trying to figure out who Frog really is.  Their world is then upended after one too many inept decisions, and Kyle, Swin, and Johnna find themselves directly in Frog’s crosshairs, who mistakenly sees them as a threat to his empire. Based on John Brandon’s best-selling book of the same name, ARKANSAS weaves together three decades of Deep South drug trafficking to explore the cycle of violence that turns young men into criminals, and old men into legends.

ARKANSAS stars Liam Hemsworth, Clark Duke, Michael Kenneth Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Eden Brolin, Chandler Duke with John Malkovich and Vince Vaughn and is directed by Clark Duke. Check Out this trailer for ARKANSAS:

Mel Gibson And Vince Vaughn To Star In DRAGGED ACROSS CONCRETE

Mel Gibson

Academy Award® Winner Mel Gibson (Braveheart) and Vince Vaughn (Hacksaw Ridge, Wedding Crashers) will star in Dragged Across Concrete, written and to be directed by S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk).  The film will mark another production for Keith Kjarval of Unified Pictures and financed by the recently announced Unified Film Fund I slate, which is partnered with Look to the Sky Films. The fund, comprised of Victory Square Labs and its equity partner Fantasy 360 (FYS:CN)(OTC:FNTYF)(6F6.F) along with The Fyzz Facility, was announced at the most recent Cannes. The film will also be produced by Zahler’s frequent collaborators, Dallas Sonnier under his new Cinestate banner, and Jack Heller of Assemble Media.  BLOOM will commence international sales on the thriller at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, with WME Global representing the U.S. rights.

A stolid, old guard policeman, Ridgeman (Gibson) and his volatile younger partner, Anthony (Vaughn), find themselves suspended when a video of their strong-arming tactics become the media’s special du jour.  Low on cash and with no other options, these two embittered soldiers descend into the criminal underworld to gain their just due, but instead find far more than they wanted awaiting them in the shadows.

BLOOM’s Alex Walton said, “Mel and Vince have a truly unique energy and, subsequent to their recent success with Hacksaw Ridge, have formed a dynamic chemistry that will coincide seamlessly with Craig’s vision. Dragged Across Concrete will pave the way for filmmaking, reviving the power of intelligent dialogue combined with electrically charged grit and action.”

Zahler added, “Dragged Across Concrete is best suited to my goal of making a heartfelt, surprising, sad, funny, shocking, and memorable world with multiple viewpoints.  As is often the case in my novels and screenplays, the protagonists are in perilous circumstances against which they struggle in different and surprising—though logical—ways.  I am absolutely thrilled to have Mel and Vince agree to play the lead roles.”

Gibson and Vaughn most recently collaborated on the critically acclaimed and lauded war drama Hacksaw Ridge, which Gibson directed. The film received six Academy Award nominations including best picture and best director for Gibson.  Other accolades, Hacksaw Ridge won the AFI Movie of the Year Award, swept the 2017 Australian Film Academy’s prizes and earned three Golden Globe and two SAG nominations.

Zahler is currently in post-production on Brawl in Cell Block 99 which also stars Vaughn alongside Jennifer Carpenter and Don Johnson. He previously wrote and directed Indie Spirit Award nominated western Bone Tomahawk, starring Kurt Russell and Patrick Wilson.

Zahler is represented by UTA, Cinestate and Ziffren Brittenham LLP.  Gibson is represented by CAA and attorney Tom Hansen, and Vaughn by WME and attorney Deborah Klein.

BLOOM’s diversified slate includes: Josh Trank’s Fonzo starring Tom Hardy; Scott Cooper’s Hostiles starring Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike; Martin Zandvliet’s The Outsider starring Jared Leto; Federico D’ Alessandro’s Tau starring Maika Monroe and Ed Skrein; Paul Weitz’s Bel Canto starring Julianne Moore and Ken Watanabe; Danny Strong’s Rebel in the Ryestarring Nicholas Hoult; George Clooney’s Suburbicon starring Matt Damon and Julianne Moore; and Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s Woodshock starring Kirsten Dunst.

Hacksaw Ridge is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers, was wounded by a grenade, and hit by snipers. Oscar winner Forest Whitaker (LEE DANIELS’ THE BUTLER, THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND) and Vince Vaughn (upcoming HACKSAW RIDGE, INTO THE WILD) are set to star in the drama THE ARCHBISHOP AND THE ANTICHRIST to be directed by two time Oscar nominee writer/director Roland Joffé (THE KILLING FIELDS, THE SCARLET LETTER), it was announced today by Emmy Award nominated producer Craig Baumgarten (HOOK, NEVER BACK DOWN).

UNFINISHED BUSINESS – The Review

unfinishedbusiness

Once again Hollywood reaches for that elusive golden ring that is the big box office “R” rated comedy smash. After all, there’s been a HANGOVER trilogy, and double dips in the HOT TUB TIME MACHINE and those HORRIBLE BOSSES. So when did this cycle of raunchy, crude laugh fests begin? Many point to that unexpected BO champ from nearly ten years ago, WEDDING CRASHERS. And, oddly enough, one half of that “bromance” headlines this new release. That 2015 hit was a high point in the roller coaster movie career of Vince Vaughn, a ride that really began with his breakout role nearly twenty years ago in SWINGERS. But of recent years the coaster car has been on a downward trek with misfires like THE WATCH and THE INTERNSHIP. Perhaps with two new comic cohorts and the director of one of his few recent bright spots (DELIVERY MAN), he can put the brakes on and start that climb back to the top, asVince and the boys complete some UNFINISHED BUSINESS.

As the story starts, “swarf” (discarded industrial metal shavings) salesman Dan Trunkman (Vaughn) has reached his limit when his boss, Chuck (Sienna Miller) cuts his meager salary by 5%. As his co-workers watch in wonder, Dan makes his “Jerry Maguire”-like mission statement/announcement of his intention to form his own company and invites any interested parties to meet him in the parking lot. The only takers outside are the downsized 67 year-old Tim (Tom Wilkinson) and young, naive, simple-minded Mike (Dave Franco), who was just there to grab a new gig after leaving Foot Locker (“I hate feet, but I like people”). No matter, they’ll meet at the local Dunkin’ Donuts to map out a plan. A year later and they’re still meeting there. But not for long, because they are flying to Portland the next day in order to seal the deal (“shake hands”) with a big client that Dan has been schmoozing for a while. And boy, does he need this deal. Dan’s gorgeous wife (June Diane Raphael) is having trouble stretching the household budget since teenage son Paul (Britton Sear) wants to go to private school (he’s relentlessly bullied because of his weight). Meanwhile pre-teen daughter Bess (Ella Anderson) needs Dan to help with her homework essay, “Who’s your Daddy?”. When Dan, Tim, and Mike arrive in Portland, they’re stunned to run into Chuck, who’s also in the running for the big contract. All seems lost when head honcho Jim (James Marsden) dismisses them, but Jim’s sympathetic aide Bill (Nick Frost) offers some hope. Seems Jim’s boss will be at the company HQ in Berlin over the next couple days, so if Dan and company can hustle across the pond, they’ve got a chance to give a personal sales pitch to him. In this foreign locale, the guys must try to navigate the bustling metropolis during Oktoberfest, the G8 summit,a big marathon run, and a sex “fetish” festival. Whew! It’s do or die for Dan’s fledging company for the next 48 hours.

Vaughn tempers his manic motor-mouth persona for this role as leader and loving poppa’. There’s a sweetness to his scenes with the kids that’s rarely seen in his most recent roles. Plus he’s a bit more open to being the brunt of the jokes here, rather than being a master of the fast insult, even allowing us to see Dan’s flopsweat and fear of failure. He’s a more grounded, human hero amongst the oddballs. First of those being Franco’s Mike who projects a Forrest Gump-like aura as he stumbles and bumbles through life. It, too, is a nice switch from his recent comic villain roles in 21 JUMP STREET and NEIGHBORS. However, the gifted Wilkinson is criminally underused as the ever-horny Tim, whose main purpose is to be the standard inappropriate senior citizen without any filter between brain and mouth. He’s saddled with cheap, drunken and drugged leering through most of the flick. The film’s other comic Brit, Frost, is given little to do here besides being Dan’s supporter and a surprise fetish fan (aww, he’s just lookin’ for love). Marsden is the same callous, one-note handsome jerk he’s played in flicks like ANCHORMAN 2. Speaking of baddies, kudos for casting Miller as an unrepetentent…er.. b#*lbuster, who in any other flick would predictably change her alliegence. The film could’ve used a lot more of her. The same goes for Raphael (so funny on TV’s “Burning Love”), also criminally underused like Wilkinson, as the anchor at home. Anderson and Sear as the Trunkman kiddos give terrific natural performances and never verge on cloying or caustic.

Director Ken Scott really hopes to have it both ways with this comic caper, trying to shock and offend while never putting anyone down. This is most evident with the Mike character, as we’re asked to laugh at his cluelessness while not thinking of him as dim-witted. That push and pull never quite finds a balance. Plus he attempts to shoehorn a “message” (oh, cyber-bullying is bad?) with no subtlety at all. But the film’s worse sin may be the lack of pay-off for the way-too intricate comic set-ups. Dan has to live inside an art exhibit, uh uh, and then…huh? This helps make the film seem twice as long as its 90 minute running time. Berlin looks fairly nice, though. And, hey guys, if you’re gonna’ make Dan’s home base St. Louis, it would’ve been great to at least have some real footage of the town (not even a gol-dern’ establishing shot of the Gateway Arch!). For fans of funny flicks, UNFINISHED BUSINESS never seals the deal. No “handshake” for you folks!
