Holkenborg’s score is driven by George Miller’s desire to capture the inhumanity of the Wasteland through Furiosa’s eyes. The movie’s music embodies Tom’s full-contact approach to composition and his mastery of sound design and classical scoring. Tom’s role on Furiosa is especially unique, as he not only composed the score, but also worked alongside Academy Award-winning supervising sound editor Rob Mackenzie to mix the film’s final audio.

“My collaboration with the incredible George Miller began over a decade ago with our work on Mad Max: Fury Road, (review) a project that marked a pivotal moment in my career as a film composer. Returning to this world to score the odyssey of Furiosa, an epic tale of survival, resilience and revenge has been just as eye-opening and gratifying. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a testament to the vision of a singular film maker, whose pursuit of excellence always inspires me to push my creative limits.”

Tom Holkenborg’s Lush Score For George Miller’s THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING Is Available Now And Features The Lovely Song “Cautionary Tale” Performed by Matteo Bocelli

Milan Records has released THREE THOUSAND YEARS OF LONGING (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) featuring music by multiplatinum-selling producer, composer, musician and educator TOM HOLKENBORG aka JUNKIE XLAvailable everywhere now, the album features score music written by Holkenborg for the fantasy film by Academy Award®-winning director George Miller.

It’s a gorgeous score and one to add to everyone’s library.

The project is the latest in an ongoing creative partnership between Holkenborg and Miller, with the duo working together on the 2015 blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road and the franchise’s highly-anticipated prequel Furiosa.

Also included within the 9-track collection is “Cautionary Tale,” an original song performed by Matteo Bocelli. Written by Holkenborg in collaboration with George Miller and Augusta Gore, the emotionally resonant track features as the film’s end title theme. Originally making its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, Three Thousand Years of Longing is in cinemas now.

Holkenborg’s film scoring credits include Mad Max: Fury Road, Deadpool, Black Mass, Brimstone, The Dark Tower, Tomb Raider, Terminator: Dark Fate, Justice League: The Snyder Cut, Godzilla vs Kong and 3000 Years of Longing. He has worked with directors including Peter Jackson, Robert Rodriguez, James Cameron, George Miller, Christopher Nolan, Zack Snyder and Tim Miller among many others.

Of the soundtrack, composer TOM HOLKENBORG says, “This movie spans 3000 years, and George wanted a score that could move from the ancient to the contemporary, while capturing all the emotions the characters experience in this film. This is really apparent in the main melody, which took two years to create! The goal was to compose something that sounds like it has always been here, and always will be. Music is essential to George’s vision, and the arrangements had to be incredibly precise to convey the feeling captured on screen. Working with George is a joy, he continues to make me a better composer, and I am honored to call him a collaborator and a friend.”

“Tom has a very comprehensive understanding of music. He understood that this film had to evoke the magical feeling about the wonders and catastrophes of this world,” adds director GEORGE MILLER. “His score allows you to lose yourself in the story from the opening credits until the end.”

Of his inclusion on the soundtrack as the featured vocalist on “Cautionary Tale,” MATTEO BOCELLI says, “I’m so honoured to be singing this song. It’s incredibly beautiful; timeless with real depth of feeling. Tom Holkenborg did an amazing job. It elevates the movie even further thanks to Tom’s incredible talent. I can’t wait to start performing it live and see the audience’s reaction.”

Dr Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) is an academic – content with life and a creature of reason. While in Istanbul attending a conference, she happens to encounter a Djinn (Idris Elba) who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom.

This presents two problems. First, she doubts that he is real and second, because she is a scholar of story and mythology, she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. The Djinn pleads his case by telling her fantastical stories of his past. Eventually she is beguiled and makes a wish that surprises them both. (review)

ICYMI – Production Is Underway on Director George Miller’s FURIOSA, With Anya Taylor-Joy In Title Role, Alongside Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke – Tom Holkenborg Returning To Compose Score

Principal photography is underway on Academy Award-winning filmmaker George Miller’s “Furiosa,” the much-anticipated return to the iconic dystopian world he created more than 30 years ago with the seminal “Mad Max” films, this time with an original new standalone action adventure that will reveal the origins of the powerhouse character from the multiple Oscar-winning global smash “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

The new feature is being produced by Miller’s own Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner, together with the filmmaker’s “Fury Road” partners Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures. Anya Taylor-Joy stars in the title role, alongside Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke.

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Taylor-Joy was most recently seen in Edgar Wright’s “Last Night in Soho” and Robert Eggers’ “The Northman.” She also played the lead in the romantic comedy “Emma,” based on the Jane Austen novel. Her additional features include the sci-fi thrillers “Split” from M. Night Shyamalan, and his follow up “Glass,” in which she reprised her role from the previous film. She also starred as a chess prodigy in the massively successful miniseries “The Queen’s Gambit.”

Hemsworth is right at home with high-octane action, having starred in the “Avengers” and “Thor” films as well as the recent “Extraction.” His other film credits include “Bad Times at the El Royale,” “12 Strong,” “In the Heart of the Sea,” “Rush,” “Snow White and the Huntsman,” and “Star Trek,” among many others.

Burke is perhaps best-known for his award-nominated role in Joanna Hogg’s film “The Souvenir,” as well as playing the lead in the popular UK crime series “C.B. Strike.” He also starred as Athos in the BBC series “The Musketeers,” appeared in such feature films as Nicholas Winding Refn’s “Only God Forgives,” and played famed filmmaker Orson Welles in David Fincher’s Oscar-winning “Mank.”

Miller penned the script with “Mad Max: Fury Road” co-writer Nico Lathouris and produces alongside his longtime partner, Oscar-nominated producer Doug Mitchell (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Babe”). Miller’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes such longtime Australian collaborators as production designer Colin Gibson, editor Margaret Sixel, sound mixer Ben Osmo, costume designer Jenny Beavan and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt, each of whom won an Oscar for their work on “Mad Max: Fury Road,” as well as first assistant director PJ Voeten and second unit director and stunt coordinator Guy Norris. The director of photography is Simon Duggan (“Hacksaw Ridge,” “The Great Gatsby”).

Filming is underway in Australia. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

George Miller also confirmed that he and composer Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, will work together again on FURIOSA. Read our interview with composer HERE.

Miller made the reveal at Cannes where his film, “3000 Years of Longing,” debuted, which Holkenborg also scored. Says Holkenborg: “What a week in Cannes for George and ‘3000 Years of Longing,’ which I sadly had to miss, but can’t wait for people to see this remarkable film. Also! Very grateful to continue my journey with George with his next installment of the Mad Max series: ‘Furiosa.’”

Composer Tom Holkenborg Launches Season 4 of Studio Time And Listen To ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, GODZILLA VS. KONG Tracks

Composer and educator Tom Holkenborg returns this Spring for another season of his free online educational series, Studio Time. Studio Time gives viewers unparalleled access to one of Hollywood’s most unique composers and a peak into Tom’s work on some of this year’s most anticipated movies including ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, GODZILLA VS. KONG, and Army of the Dead.

To enhance through music the new worlds director Adam Wingard envisioned and then, with his incredible team of artist, realized, the director turned to Tom Holkenborg for the score to GODZILLA VS. KONG.

The composer revealed, “I’m a huge fan of Godzilla and Kong, I’ve watched over 35 Godzilla movies over the years, so geeking out with Adam over this film came naturally. Kong is such an iconic character with over 90 years of scoring history behind him, and this was a perfect project for me to flex the retro monster orchestral scoring side of my brain mixed with my very contemporary electronic side, in this case `80s sequences and baselines in the vein of John Carpenter.

“In this score,” he continues, “I was trying to emphasize the insanity of Godzilla and the humanity of Kong. In the spirit of the film, it was fun to get my mad scientist coat on and make some monstrous sounds out of a custom five-foot bass drum and 13- foot-tall guitar amp!”

“What we worked to show thematically via the film’s visuals—technology versus the natural world, the exploration of the future or the past, the bond humanity does (or doesn’t) feel with nature—Tom was able to evoke through his incredible score,” Wingard states. “Since we’re both such big fans of these Titans, I was really excited to partner with him to pay homage to their cinematic history and also hear his entirely new and unique musical interpretations specific to the story we’re telling today.”

Every season of Studio Time is produced by Tom and free to watch on his YouTube channel (161k subscribers, 13M views). Studio Time Season 4 will be full of in-depth tutorials and practical demonstrations, touching on topics that include maximizing value from a budget studio setup, hardware x DAW connectivity, Tom’s favorite synth plug-ins and insert effects, as well as Sound Design classes. Tom will also answer viewer submitted questions and tutorial requests, tour you around his new streamlined studio set-up and provide detailed breakdowns on the key themes of ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE and GODZILLA VS. KONG.

With a colossal 4+ hours of brand new music, Justice League stands as the Mount Everest of Tom’s compositional career, combining his full spectrum of experience in rock, electronic, world and classical music in one score.

The Zack Snyder’s Justice League (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) From Composer Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, Available March 18

WaterTower Music is excited to announce the March 18 release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), which features a completely brand-new score to accompany Snyder’s vision for the film, created by Grammy nominated multi-platinum producer, musician, composer and educator Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL (Mad Max: Fury RoadDeadpool, the upcoming Godzilla Vs. Kong).

The album features Holkenborg’s music from Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the film in which, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.

A new track from Holkenborg, “Middle Mass (From Zack Snyder’s Justice League)” was released.

This joins the previously released “The Crew At Warpower (From Zack Snyder’s Justice League)” as opportunities for fans to hear early music from the film.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League will be made available worldwide day and date with the US HBO Max debut on THURSDAY, MARCH 18 (*with a small number of exceptions). The feature film will be available internationally to rent, buy, stream or watch via HBO services, local TV providers, or a range of digital platforms. And the soundtrack releases worldwide the same day.

Tom Holkenborg calls Zack Snyder’s Justice League (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) his “Mount Everest of Scores.” Indeed, the album’s nearly 4 hours of music showcases his colossal output on a project which was a massive and deeply personal undertaking for him, given his and Zack Snyder’s years-deep connection on the film. The two worked together on Snyder’s original musical vision for the film in 2016; and have now come back together to see that vision come to fruition.

“Scoring Zack Snyder’s Justice League has been a project like no other in my career,” explains the composer. “It’s a four-and-a- half-hour movie. I wrote so much music! The score is, at times, fully electronic, and at other times fully orchestral. It included many global elements, rock and even trap. And it was all written during Covid, so it was an incredibly hands on, isolated and intense experience; and I think that comes out in the score. This project demanded so much on so many levels, and all of us involved owed it to the fans and Zack to give it everything we had.”

Unquestionably, the album does showcase the best of Tom Holkenborg, who was inspired to put everything he had into the opus. The soundtrack highlights his full spectrum as a composer, and draws on his experience as a rock producer, electronic music producer, his world music collaborations, and love of classical orchestration and classical film scoring. Yet even with that wide ranging stylistic mix, this body of work brilliantly illuminates a passionate cohesiveness amidst a more aggressive and more dramatic offering than anything the composer has previously put forth.

The Zack Snyder’s Justice League (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) will be available March 18. Two tracks, “The Crew At Warpower (From Zack Snyder’s Justice League)” and “Middle Mass (From Zack Snyder’s Justice League)” now available digitally, and the track list is as follows. “This electrifying collaboration brings us such brilliant new character themes,”
commented WaterTower Music head Jason Linn, “While we’ve been fortunate to work several times with both composers individually, this experience has been uniquely thrilling.”
