THE GOOD DINOSAUR : Interview with Director Peter Sohn

thumbnail_22545

A few weeks ago, WAMG was invited to the in-home global junket for Disney & Pixar’s THE GOOD DINOSAUR, which is available now on Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital download. While there, they had a band ready to play us a few songs from the film, and I sat down with director Peter Sohn to talk about the film. Check it out below!

The Good Dinosaur” asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed theplanet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct?  Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo (voice of Raymond Ochoa) makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.

The composers were talking about their role in conveying your vision. You were talking earlier about navigating through that without knowing the lingo. So how did you go about conveying your vision to them and what initial sound were you going for?

Peter Sohn: One of the pieces that I loved from what Michael had written was from Life of Pi. There was a real kind of…there are moments in that movie where you are just looking at a character looking at an animal stuck in a boat with a lot of silence. But the music underneath it was not overbearing, but it was also very internal. Like, it was kind of projecting what the characters were thinking about. That was something that I really was looking for in this film, because Arlo and Spot, they don’t speak the same language. And so, that was an element: could we find someone that could really project that internal kind of thought process in the music for Arlo? He was that guy. And he found all these themes that helped us out with that. That was one of the first things we started talking about.

That’s awesome. Disney and Pixar are known for how much research they put into things before they start with location. I would assume you did quite a bit with dinosaurs. What kind of preparation did you take before even getting off the ground with this?

Peter Sohn: Preparation research. It really was a lot of movie love going on. Like, I love The Black Stallion. That was a movie that was really quiet. ET. And so, I started watching these kind of boring dog movies. Even Rain Man was kind of a boring dog movie. There was that and then the great westerns, the great landscape movies like Lawrence of Arabia. That was some of the early prep work I had done before we’d even go on research trips.

Bu it would also kind of teach me what I needed for the movie. For example, the cliché of the cowboy versus the real thing was something that I didn’t realize until we went out to the research trip. But I knew I wanted to go in that world.

Yeah, you can definitely feel the spaghetti western influence on certain parts. Were there any films in particular that you looked for to that?

Peter Sohn: Shane was a huge one, Jeremiah Johnson, The Searchers, Red River, even some of the modern day ones, like Silverado had some aspects that we looked at. But then trying to make landscape or nature a character, there were a lot of other movies that kind of hit that core.

This just popped into my head. One topic that’s been really prominent as of late is cultural appropriation. I’m just curious… Is that something that you focus on? You are dealing with the cave people and landscapes and everything like that. Is that something that you focus on and think about avoiding conflict when you are making a film?

Peter Sohn:  Yeah. It’s not the first thing that you think about. But for me, I don’t want to just take a culture completely. I honor it and respect it, but also trying to make it work within the story, what the story needs are. And so, the culture of a cowboy was something that, like, when I first jumped into, I didn’t really understand until we did the research. And once we did the research, it was like, “OK. You know what? I’m literally making fun of the cowboy in that other version. I do not want to do that in terms of the culture of the people that survive in the west and live out there. Let’s honor it by finding something truthful in the way they live.”

So that was as close as we got to that type of thing. In terms of the humans, it was always kind of a made up culture, like we were trying to create our own traditions, create our own rules because of the evolutionary kind of setup that we had.

What is it about the buddy pic that speaks to you? The one that that I love about this is that Disney and Pixar are venturing out from the traditional love story, and on to subjects such as friendship.v

Peter Sohn: What’s funny about this film is that it’s slightly different from the classic buddy film. The classic buddy film was always like, “I don’t like you.” “I don’t like you!” “Well, I’m stuck with you.” “I’m stuck with you, too.” “I’m beginning to understand you.” “I’m beginning to understand you. Now we’re friends.”

This is like, “I don’t like you.” “I’m a dog.” “I still don’t like you.” “I’m just a dog living my life.” “You are teaching me everything. I’m still living my life. You have changed me. I have grown from you because of this relationship.”

So that’s something that was slightly different but something that spoke to me in terms of that kind of miscommunication. Like, again, I was talking about growing up with immigrant families, you are just trying to find ways to communicate without language. And this relationship and the way they connect was very much rooted in that.

Another thing about the classic Disney and Pixar films is a lot do have some sort of tragedy in their story. I think part of that is in order to allow your character to grow from that. How important is the tragedy to a Disney film? Did you have that in mind right away when you started writing this?

Peter Sohn: Yeah. It was there because it was in a lot of films about growing up. We tried to find a new take on it so we could still have that hole in Arlo’s life that happens when you lose someone. We did a lot of research into that type of loss and how children heal from that.

Then we started shying away from it and pulling back away from that concept. Then we met some families how had recently lost a husband or a loved one and they were like, “Please do not shy away from it. It’s such an important thing to continue to talk about with families.” There’s always a kid that still is gripping with it. So, so what if it’s an older thing. It’s a story that’s there for a reason. It made us even stronger in that concept.

What was the biggest lesson that you took from art department to director? It’s quite the leap.

Peter Sohn: You know what? Your title; that was a big deal for me, that you are a part of a family that everyone is trying to make the best film possible. Some people as the supervisors…I’m a supervisor, so I’m supposed to tell people what to do. In my years I’ve never seen that make anything positive. For me it was always like, “What can we do to make this film better, whatever problem that’s in front of us?” How do you answer that in a way that benefits the film?

I loved the nature backgrounds in this, such as the rain. All the nature elements are so vibrant and really detailed. But when you look at the design of Arlo and the T-Rex’s, it’s a little more simplified. How did you find that balance between those?

Peter Sohn: It was a tough balance. We did a lot of experiments early on where the nature was more cartoony or graphic. And it’s the danger that we needed out. All of a sudden, the world felt so safe when it was just kind of a cartoony premise. So we kept those elements of realism in it.

But also the same thing with Arlo where Arlo is more realistic. He just felt like an animal, like a cow sitting out there. And a cow has no problems. A cow can just eat grass and survive. But because this is a growth movie about survival, we needed you to feel when Arlo’s thrust out into the wilderness for the first time to be like, “[breaths heavy] I’m going to die out here!” To really feel that kid that was lost. So we pushed that graphic element to feel that youthful quality and the human quality of what a dinosaur could be.

That’s amazing. One more question. How was your first test screening? I’ve heard some brutal stories about how those go!

Peter Sohn: It’s rough. I remember hearing about this audience, and there were really great positive reactions were people were cheering at the end, but then there were questions that were harder. And that can throw you for a loop in both good ways and bad ways because you need those to just keep yourself in check just because you’ve been watching the movie over and over again so many times. So getting fresh eyes are always good.

But if taken the wrong way, it can be very destructive. For me it was always the spirit of the note, trying to understand the reasoning behind some of the notes.

What’s the strangest note you got?

Peter Sohn: “Why dinosaurs?”

[laughs] Well it’s called The Good Dinosaur

Peter Sohn: Yeah. A dinosaur is a cool metaphor for being stuck. It’s about a kid trying to grow and move forward.

Composers Mychael Danna And Jeff Danna Utilize Alternative World Music Instruments For THE GOOD DINOSAUR Score

Walt Disney Records The Good Dinosaur

Disney•Pixar’s THE GOOD DINOSAUR features an original score by Academy Award-winning composer Mychael Danna and Emmy-nominated composer Jeff Danna. The soundtrack is available today.

THE GOOD DINOSAUR asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo (voice of Raymond Ochoa) makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.

Directed by Peter Sohn and produced by Denise Ream (“Cars 2”), Disney•Pixar’s THE GOOD DINOSAUR opens in theaters on Nov. 25, 2015.

Mychael Danna is an Academy Award-winning film composer recognized for his evocative blending of non-western traditions with orchestral and electronic music. Among his body of work includes his Oscar-winning score for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi and his many Genie Award-winning scores for director and longtime collaborator Atom Egoyan.

Other celebrated collaborations include those with Bennett Miller on his multiple Oscar-nominee Moneyball (2011) and his Oscar-winning drama Capote (2005); with Terry Gilliam on his Oscar-nominated The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) and Tideland (2005); with Mira Nair on Vanity Fair (2004), Monsoon Wedding (2001) and Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996); and with Billy Ray on Breach (2007) and Shattered Glass (2003).

Danna’s credits also include the Oscar-winning Little Miss Sunshine (2006), for which he shared a Grammy Award nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album; Marc Webb’s acclaimed romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer (2009); and James Mangold’s Oscar-winning film Girl, Interrupted (1999).

Jeff Danna has created scores for a long and varied list of films. His credits include such diverse projects as the hit film adaptations of the video game/action franchises Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Silent Hill 1 & Silent Hill 2; the Ryan Gosling-Anthony Hopkins legal drama Fracture; The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus and Tideland, which were both directed by Terry Gilliam; Lakeview Terrace directed by Neil LaBute; a series of films for director Brett Morgen, including The Kid Stays In The Picture and Chicago 10; Closing The Ring for director Richard Attenborough; and the cult classic The Boondock Saints, among others.

Additionally, his collaborative Orchestral Celtic albums with brother composer Mychael Danna have enjoyed worldwide success and placed in the Top Ten on the Billboard chart in the United States.

Recently, Jeff scored Brett Morgen’s Kurt Cobain biopic Montage Of Heck which premiered in Sundance and was released on HBO in May 2015. He wrote the music for Tim Blake Nelson’s upcoming Anesthesia starring Kristen Stewart and Glenn Close.

“THE GOOD DINOSAUR takes Arlo – and the audience – on an emotional journey of self-discovery. Filmmakers opted to tell the story in a new way, relying less on dialogue, while leaning into the power of nature, compelling characters and music that captures the imagination. “It’s a dinosaur movie, so the music needs to be big,” says director Peter Sohn. “But it’s also that classic boy-and-his-dog story embarking on a journey home. That calls for a certain sensitivity to embrace the emotions. Mychael and Jeff are brilliant artists when it comes to setting up a theme that can be sweet and hopeful one moment and strong and powerful the next. And they do it in a unique way.”

“Pixar sets the bar for animation—they set the bar for imagination,” says Mychael Danna. “So we wanted to do something different, blending traditional instrumentation and a melody-centered approach with alternative world music instruments. We draw from everywhere—historically and geographically—to help tell this story.”

Instruments utilized range from classic strings, percussion and brass to the unexpected. “We used some pre-Colombian instruments that reflected the landscape around the characters,” says Jeff Danna. “We used a lot of unusual string-guitar instruments that are primitive or folky: a bouzouki, a long-necked Greek instrument that’s like a mandolin; the Turkish cumbus; the Iranian saz; and a Nordic instrument called a harpolek. They’re really interesting when placed into the refined world of the orchestra. Our approach to many of the things in the film was to take the expected or standard thing and, just like the movie did, turn it a little sideways.”

They found Spot challenging—his rough-around-the-edges character was tough to pair musically. They settled on a woodwind—a simple recorder—that is played with a guttural underpinning, creating a theme that reflects Spot’s wild ways and contrasts with Arlo. “We wanted a sound for Arlo’s fear,” says Jeff Danna, “so we used an instrument called a fujara which is a Slovakian shepherd’s pipe. It’s a big, long overblown flute that we found effectively dark and evocative in representing Arlo’s frame of mind in these fearful moments.”

The Dannas designed a theme for Arlo that remained intact throughout the film. “When he’s born, it’s delicate, plucked on a single instrument,” says Mychael Danna. “As he encounters fear, loss and then confidence – that theme evolves and develops, and is ultimately played by a full orchestra as he gallops with joy across the mountaintops.”

They utilized a toy piano purchased at a flea market and a deliberately out-of-tune upright piano. “We call it the church-basement piano,” says Mychael Danna. “It’s just an old, well-worn upright piano that I played, with a lovely hominess quality to it that is a wonderful fit with the film. It was very helpful in creating the music that evokes this beautiful, warm, love-filled place that is Arlo’s home, a place that he loses, and then eventually finds again, although as a different, grown-up dinosaur.

“We’ve got this incredible, mind-bogglingly beautiful setting,” continues Danna. “The landscape is such an important part of the storytelling—a world where dinosaurs are homesteading and humans are these little critters that live out in the bush. Even though it’s about a dinosaur and a boy who never speaks a word, it speaks to all of us. There’s a real human arc to this character’s story that we can all relate to. That’s what I love about Pixar, beyond all the bells and whistles, the stories speak to us and move us deeply.”

THE GOOD DINOSAUR Is Thrilled That The Halloween Asteroid Has Passed By

Watch how THE GOOD DINOSAUR reacts to the Halloween Asteroid’s (Asteroid TB145) near miss this morning.

An asteroid just passed by Earth today, it was a near miss – if you consider 300,000 miles away a near miss (the moon is 238,900 miles from Earth). According to NASA, the asteroid, TB145, is estimated to be 2,000 feet wide and traveling at 78,000 miles per hour. The object could actually be a dead comet.

Peter Sohn, director of Disney•Pixar’s THE GOOD DINOSAUR, says the event reminds filmmakers of the idea that launched the film, which hits theaters – so to speak – on Nov. 25, 2015. Says Sohn, “This whole thing started off with the idea: What if the asteroid that theoretically wiped out all the dinosaurs 65 million years ago missed? What would have happened? We had a lot of fun evolving the dinosaurs. Herbivores became farmers; carnivores became ranchers.”

THE GOOD DINOSAUR asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Check out this first clip from Pixar Animation Studios’ new short film, “Sanjay’s Super Team.”

Director and artist Sanjay Patel uses his own experience to tell the story of a young, first-generation Indian-American boy whose love for western pop culture comes into conflict with his father’s traditions.

Sanjay is absorbed in the world of cartoons and comics, while his father tries to draw him into the traditions of his Hindu practice. Tedium and reluctance quickly turn into an awe-inspiring adventure as the boy embarks on a journey he never imagined, returning with a new perspective that they can both embrace.

“Sanjay’s Super Team” is Patel’s personal story and a “mostly true” chronicle of his journey to understand the Hindu world so important to his parents.

“Sanjay’s Super Team” opens in theaters on November 25, 2015, in front of Disney•Pixar’s THE GOOD DINOSAUR.

RILEY’S FIRST DATE?

Pixar Animation Studios heads back inside the mind with an all-new short. “Riley’s First Date?” made its world premiere this afternoon at D23 EXPO. Director Josh Cooley, along with “Inside Out” filmmakers Pete Docter (“Up,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and Jonas Rivera (“Up”), introduced the short, which revisits Riley, now 12. “‘Riley’s First Date?’ ventures into the minds of Riley’s parents when a mysterious boy shows up at the front door,” said Cooley. “Having a daughter myself, it was a lot of fun to mine my own feelings to show this emotional time in a parent’s life.”

The short will be included as a bonus feature in the digital HD & Blu-ray releases of Disney·Pixar’s “Inside Out,” which will be available digitally Oct. 13 and on Blu-ray Nov. 3, 2015.

THE GOOD DINOSAUR

Anticipation for Disney·Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” was amplified when director Peter Sohn and producer Denise Ream shared breathtaking sequences with fans, including never-before-seen footage of a trio of T-Rexes in action.

In theaters on Nov. 25, 2015, the film introduces audiences to Arlo, a sheltered Apatosaurus who finds himself far from home, and Spot, Arlo’s unlikely human friend.

“Arlo and Spot journey through a world that has been greatly inspired by the American Northwest,” said Sohn. “It is epic in scope, soul-enriching and simultaneously beautiful and treacherous. In this world, we meet up with a very special family of T-Rexes, who help Arlo find a way through his personal fears and ultimately teach Arlo what he’s truly made of.”

Oscar-winning director Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo,” “WALL•E”), co-director Angus MacLane and producer Lindsey Collins (co-producer “WALL•E”) offered details about the all-new story, which reunites Dory with friends Nemo and Marlin on a search for answers about her past. What can she remember? Who are her parents? And where did she learn to speak Whale?

Said Stanton, “In ‘Finding Dory,’ we can expect to address the one emotionally open-ended issue that remained from the first movie: Where is Dory’s family, and will this overly-optimistic fish with short-term memory loss ever be able to find them again? Her issue has also given us the opportunity to travel to very different locations, on land and sea, and meet a variety of new sea creatures that expand the world of Nemo, Marlin and Dory.”

TOY STORY 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Pixar Animation Studios marks the 20th Anniversary of “Toy Story” this year. Said Lasseter, “All the characters from ‘Toy Story’—especially Woody and Buzz—are so close to us. They seem more like family members than just creations. Not only do we dearly love the characters, but we also love the world of ‘Toy Story’—the world where toys come to life when people are not in the room has always been rich with many story possibilities.”

Lasseter, who’s one of Pixar’s three founders, celebrated 20 years since “Toy Story” transformed the animation industry and the art of storytelling. He welcomed to the stage iconic two-time Oscar®-winning songwriter and longtime Pixar collaborator Randy Newman, whose Pixar credits include “Toy Story,” “A Bug’s Life,” “Toy Story 2,” “Monsters, Inc.” and “Cars.”

Also joining in the celebration were “Toy Story 4” co-director Josh Cooley (“Cars 2,” “Ratatouille”) and producer Galyn Susman  (“Toy Story OF TERROR!”). Screenwriters Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (“Celeste & Jesse Forever”) joined Buzz, Woody and Bo Peep for the celebration.

“I’m very proud of our films,” said Lasseter. “When we made the first three ‘Toy Story’ films, we didn’t realize what we had done was to change the genre of each of the films’ story. For ‘Toy Story 4,’ we are doing a type of story we have not done before: a love story. It’s a story about a relationship between Woody and Bo Peep. ”

“Toy Story 4,” which will be directed by Lasseter and produced by Susman, is slated for release on June 16, 2017.

GIGANTIC

Things are looking up at Walt Disney Animation Studios – way up. “Gigantic,” Disney’s unique take on “Jack and the Beanstalk,” will feature music from Oscar®-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who greeted D23 EXPO fans in signature style—in song—alongside director Nathan Greno (“Tangled”) and producer Dorothy McKim (“Get A Horse!”).

“I always wanted to be part of the Disney legacy,” said Greno. “I loved those classic stories brought to life—‘Snow White’ or ‘Cinderella’—in a way that made those films the definitive version for generations. I want to carry on that tradition by bringing ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ to modern audiences. We’re taking parts of the story we all remember and adding twists and turns, emotion and humor.”

Set in Spain during the Age of Exploration, Disney’s “Gigantic” follows adventure-seeker Jack as he discovers a world of giants hidden within the clouds. He hatches a grand plan with Inma, a 60-foot-tall, 11-year-old girl, and agrees to help her find her way home. But he doesn’t account for her super-sized personality—and who knew giants were so down to earth? “Gigantic” hits theaters in 2018.

COCO

Director Lee Unkrich (“Toy Story 3”) and producer Darla K. Anderson (“Toy Story 3”) revealed the title of their upcoming film: Disney·Pixar’s “Coco” is the celebration of a lifetime, where the discovery of a generations-old mystery leads to a most extraordinary and surprising family reunion.

“As artists and filmmakers, we couldn’t help but be drawn to the striking visuals of Dia de los Muertos,” said Unkrich and Anderson. “But it was the celebration’s core themes of family, remembrance and connection across generations that resonated within and truly inspired us. Dia de los Muertos is as singular as the Mexican culture, while at the same time completely universal in its message.

“In our story,” they continued, “the celebration of Dia de los Muertos serves as the perfect backdrop for our main character to ask where he comes from, what his place is within his family, and how families stay woven together across time through the simple act of remembrance.”
