Two-time Academy Award® winner Jodie Foster (Silence of the Lambs, The Accused) directs and co-stars with two-time Academy Award® winner Mel Gibson (Braveheart – Best Picture and Best Director) in The Beaver, a compelling and original film, slated to arrive on Blu-ray™ and DVD August 23rd from Summit Entertainment.
The Beaver — which Rolling Stone calls “heartfelt and often painfully funny” – tells the emotional story of a once successful man named Walter Black (Gibson) so plagued by his own demons that he resorts to the use of a beaver hand puppet in order turn his life around and reconnect with his family. Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) co-star in the film which is both a darkly comic journey of self-discovery and a solemn ode to the strength of family.
The Blu-ray and DVD contain special features that include audio commentary with Foster; deleted scenes; and “Everything is Going to Be O.K.,” a featurette about the making of the film.
The Beaver will be available for $30.49 SRP (on Blu-ray) and $26.99 SRP (DVD).

SXSW Film Announces 2011 Festival Teaser
SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST MOVIE AND MUSIC INTERACTIVE (SXSW) is pleased to announce a couple of films that will be playing at the festival this year. The complete festival lineup will be announced in early February 2011. The South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival runs March 11 – 19, 2011 in Austin, Texas.
The Films Announced Are:

- Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop (World Premiere) Director: Rodman Flender After a much-publicized separation with his former employers, did Conan O’Brien hit the road on a 32-City tour to connect with his fans or fill a void within himself? - It’s About You (World Premiere) Directors: Kurt & Ian Markus First-time filmmakers, photographer Kurt Markus and his son, Ian, document John Mellencamp’s summer 2009 tour across America, and the recording of his new album, No Better Than This. This is a raw and personal film, celebrating the visual beauty and power of Super8 film and the human voice.
- Paul (North American Premiere) Director: Greg Mottola, Writers: Simon Pegg & Nick Frost Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) reunite for Universal Pictures’ comedy-adventure Paul as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America’s UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever. Cast: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Blythe Danner, John Carroll Lynch, with Sigourney Weaver and Seth Rogen as Paul.
- Square Grouper (World Premiere) Director: Billy Corben A colorful portrait of Miami’s pot smuggling scene of the 1970s, populated with redneck pirates, a ganja-smoking church, and the longest serving marijuana prisoner in American history.
These films join the previously announced 2011 Opening Night Film Source Code, directed by Duncan Jones and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga and Michelle Monaghan. The complete festival lineup will be announced in early February 2011. In addition to nine full days of film screenings, SXSW Film will ultimately feature over 80 sessions of panels and workshops in the Conference. First Shots of Mel Gibson and His Beaver
Yes, that is a stuffed beaver puppet Mel Gibson is cuddling in the shot you see above. It comes to us today courtesy of Splash News who has a whole series of images from the early filming on ‘The Beaver.’
Directed by Jodie Foster, the film centers on a depressed CEO of a toy company who finds a ratty, old beaver puppet. He begins using the puppet as a sort of avatar, wearing it constantly and communicating through it.
While the premise and the shots of the early filming would make you think this is going to be a slapstick-lovers dream, evidently the screenplay is very endearing. This could be a return to form for Gibson, who hasn’t been in a starring since 2002’s ‘Signs.’
‘The Beaver’ is set for release in 2011.
Jim Carrey Leading Candidate for ‘The Beaver’
Jim Carrey has come out as the leading candidate to star in Kyle Killen’s Black List screenplay, ‘The Beaver.’ Â Sources close to the project say Carrey really likes the screenplay, and producers on the film like him for the part, as well. Â Of course, casting would be dependent on who is chosen to fill the director’s chair.
‘The Beaver’ revolves around the relationship one man has with a beaver pupper he wears on his arm. Â He treats the puppet as a living, breathing thing. Â It plays out as an offbeat comedy, and Killen’s screenplay has been compared to the likes of ‘Being John Malkovich’ and ‘Lars and the Real Girl.’
The producers behind the pic would like production to begin some time later this year, and they are currently out to several directors in an attempt to fill that spot on the project. Â Jodie Foster seems to be, at this time, the forefront choice.
