Review: THE A-TEAM

“I love it when a plan comes together.” – Col. John “Hannibal” Smith

Ok, so I know that there has been a lot of skepticism around this film… and if it could really be good. I am here to tell you to leave your doubts at the door and get ready for a fun movie!

Col. John “Hannibal” Smith (Liam Neeson) is a rebel with a reputation for leading the best team of Rangers in the military. If there is a next to impossible mission, he and his team, Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck (Bradley Cooper), Sgt. Bosco “B.A.” Baracus (Quinton “Rampage” Jackson), and “Howling Mad” Murdock (Sharlto Copley) are sent out to save the day.

Being on top does come at a cost. In order to get away with the perfect crime, an enemy in a special ops unit choses to frame the bunch for a crime that they did not commit. Now, after breaking free from their separate prisons, the four fugitives are racing against the clock to prove their innocence.

Honestly, if their plan was to lower audiences expectations only to surprise them in the theater, then they certainly succeeded. I did not expect to be as entertained as i was. This film is jam-packed with action, and boy is it fun to watch. I will say, however, that some of the CGI was a little shotty. It could have been better in places.

They did a fantastic job casting this film! Neeson was a fantastic Hannibal. His self-assured, yet always prepared demeanor was absolutely perfect! Cooper was charming, cocky, and funny throughout the film. I apologize in advance, but I have to also comment on him being shirtless several times. WOWZA! That is a tasty snack! He certainly has buffed up! Still, you cannot ignore his charm. I am really glad that Jackson did not try to be too much like Mr. T in his role. Sure, his knuckles said “Pity” and “Fool” , but his character certainly grew, which was refreshing. (He also quotes Gandhi in the film, which is favorable to me since I have a minor in Gandhian Studies… random fact for the day!) Copley certainly plays a different role than he did in “District 9”. His crazy behavior was quite amusing!

The only acting that I would have to frown upon was that of Jessica Biel who played the role of Charisa Sosa. I really wanted to like her, but her acting was rather flat in the film. I would have liked to see her play the role with more umph!

If you are expecting an Oscar winning movie, then this is not the film for you. Think about it… the tv show itself was rather cheesy! They did, however, do a great job on making an enjoyable adaptation for the big screen.

Carnahan and Cooper Going GREY

Evidently, there is going to be a plan B for director Joe Carnahan and Bradley Cooper.  According to Variety, the two, who just finished a collaboration on this coming Summer’s THE A-TEAM, are in negotiations to re-team for THE GREY for Ridley and Tony Scott’s Scott Free.  The film would serve as a return of sorts to Carnahan directing one of his own scripts, this one a co-writing job with DEATH SENTENCE scribe Ian Jeffers.

The script concerns a group of survivors of a plane crash.  After crash landing in the wilderness, the group finds themselves hunted by a pack of wolves.  The screenplay is based on a short story by Jeffers and would be a bit of a change of pace for Carnahan who, until now, has handled strictly action fare.

The thriller looks to have a $34-million budget, and, in looking at the cast list of Carnahan’s films like SMOKIN’ ACES and THE A-TEAM, it would stand to reason there would be a lot more notable actors and actresses in THE GREY than just Cooper.  Carnahan is a man who can do a lot with a little budget.  SMOKIN’ ACES, alone, had only $17 million to work with, and the cast for that film was astounding.

MakingOf.com has up the first official teaser trailer of the re-imagining/ reboot of THE A-TEAM starring Liam Neeson (TAKEN), Bradley Cooper (THE HANGOVER, WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER), and DISTRICT 9’s  Sharlto Copley.

THE A-TEAM  hits theaters June 11, 2010.

Two More Join ‘A-Team’

There were rumors a few days ago floating around that ‘District 9’ star Sharlto Copley was being touted to drop into the role of helicopter pilot Capt. “Howling Mad” Murdock in the big screen adaptation of ‘The A-Team.’  Today, Variety confirms those reports, as they claim Copley is in final negotations to take the part that had been previously rumored for such high-ranking stars as Jim Carrey.  Copley joins the team that already includes Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper as Faceman, and Quinton Jackson as B.A. Baracus.

Also joining the cast is Jessica Biel, who would be playing an ex-love of Faceman.  Joe Carnahan is directing from a screenplay by Skip Woods.  The film is set to begin production this fall in Vancouver.

Rampage Jackson Back in ‘A-Team’

After his agent claimed he was out of the ‘A-Team’ project, it appear Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is back on the project as BA Baracus.   The film is currently shooting in Vancouver, and The Vancouver Sun ran an article late last week claiming the UFC Champion was in town to star in the film.

Being a six-week shoot will surely have an effect on Jackson’s UFC career.   He was set to face Sugar Rashad Evans on the UFC 107 card, set for December 12th.   However, with Jackson setting his time aside to shoot the film, he will not have the proper training needed for a UFC, main event fight.

UFC President, Dana White, never a man to hold back what’s on his mind, didn’t disappoint this time around, either.   Here’s what he had to say about the Jackson/Evans fight.

Guess what Rashad Evans is thinking about right now.   He’s thinking about beating your f**king ass. He’s not sitting around thinking about how him and his mom used to watch the f**king Love Boat together and he wants to get the role of Isaac the bartender.

Jackson joins a cast that already includes Liam Neeson as Col. John “Hannibal” Smith and Bradley Cooper as Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck.   ‘The A-Team’ is set for release on June 11th, 2010.

The Game in talks to play B.A. Baracus in ‘The A-Team’

Is the rapper The Game set to portray B.A. Baracus in the A-Team movie? Well that’s the word around the interwebs and Blackfilm.com is saying that The Game is the top choice to take up the role made famous by Mr T. We get this from their site:

While casting is underway for the big screen adaptation on the long running TV series, ‘The A-Team,’ Blackfilm.com has exclusively learned that rapper The Game is being considered for the role of B.A Baracus, which was originated by Mr. T on the television show.

Online buzz has it that the role was going to another rapper-turned-actor, Common, but with his recent casting opposite Queen Latifah in ‘Just Right,’ he may not finish filming before ‘The A-Team’ get rolling in August. Other possible candidates have included Ice Cube and mixed martial arts fighter Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

Honestly, I think that Rampage Jackson would be a far better choice to play this role than The game. Neither of them can really act but at least Rampage Jackson is HUGE like Mr T was back in the day. What do you guys think about this news?

Chris Pine Wants ‘A-Team’ Role

I remember seeing Chris Pine as Darwin Tremor in Joe Carnahan’s insane ‘Smokin’ Aces’ and thinking to myself, “This guy is gonna break out.” Â  Well, it’s happened. Â  Not only is he the lead in one of this Summer’s biggest blockbusters, he’s now throwing his name into the hats of other, big budget retreads.

Pine recently spoke with MTV where he revealed his desire to reteam with Carnahan on the feature film remake of ‘The A-Team.’

“The [film] that I’ve had the most fun on was this movie called ‘Smokin’ Aces’ that Joe Carnahan directed – the guy that did ‘Narc’ and now he’s doing ‘The A-Team,’† Pine told MTV. “I played a neo-Nazi redneck hitman, which is about the farthest thing from me you can get. It was the most fun I had, because it was such a character.†

As far as which ‘A-Team’ character Pine wants, there’s no question.

“Murdock is my man,† he revealed, saying he wants to create a “Howling Mad† character along the same lines as the insane ‘Smokin’ Aces’ performance Carnahan steered him into. “I love Murdock.†

Carnahan is currently working on ‘The A-Team’ script which has been quite the hot potato project in Hollywood these last few years. Â  This is the furthest anyone has gotten with actually bringing the film to completion, and, if ‘Star Trek’ does as well as everyone hopes, Pine will surely be able to step into any roles he wants.
