MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL – Review

The Summer of sequels marches on at the multiplex again this week (hey last Friday I reviewed two of ’em). Oh, this is a sci-fi spectacular which also has a slight Marvel connection. MEN IN BLACK was a comic book series created by Lowell Cunningham for an up and coming company called Malibu back in the “indie comics craze’ of the 1990s. They were so “on the rise”, that they caught the attention of Marvel who promptly bought them right up…swallowing up their line of titles and characters. Smart move, because Steven Spielberg’s Amblin grabbed the screen rights to that aforementioned series. That first flick in 1997 was a surprise smash prompting a wave of toys and a cartoon TV show, but not generating a “so-so” sequel until 2002 (this is a sporadic franchise). After ten years another sequel “completed” the “trilogy”. Well, not quite complete. There have been rumblings and rumors about the “property” since the 2012 flick (the most interesting was one idea that would be a “cross-over’ with the TV show-inspired comedy franchise 21 JUMP STREET). And now comes a reboot-sequel with new agents replacing Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith’s J and K (though Emma Thompson is back as the US boss, Agent O from the last installment). So let’s straighten our ties, adjust our ‘shades’, and meet the secret heroes of MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL.

The new title proves essential to the opening flashback as Agent H (Chris Hemsworth) and Agent High T (Liam Neeson) travel from England (hence Neeson’s code name) to thwart an alien attack at the Eiffel Tower several years ago. Many more years previous, across the pond in NYC, a young girl catches another pair of men in black “doing their thing” (she’s looking from her third-floor bedroom window, so she’s not affected by the “memory eraser device”). That little girl becomes obsessed with joining those black-clad alien hunters, all the way into adulthood. “Growed-up” Molly (Tessa Thompson) applies to the FBI and CIA but is unable to persuade them to send her to this most secretive unit. Even at her tech support phone job, she tracks space activities. This proves fruitful as she stumbles and bluffs her way into the New York branch of Men in Black. Molly’s quickly discovered, but instead of zapping her brain, Agent O decides to recruit her. After her training, Molly (now Agent M) is whisked via rocket-powered subway car to the London branch where she is greeted by their director, that same Agent High T. Padding her resume, she’s assigned as a partner to Agent H, who is to escort an old alien ambassador pal named Vungus. Unfortunately, two other aliens (part of the planetary collective called “The Tribe”) are also interested in him. When they attack Vungus, he gives Agent M a tiny (fits in the palm of your hand), but powerful weapon. Thus begins a most dangerous mission for the duo as they track down the killers, try to hold on to that weapon, and deal with the possibility of a mole in the agency.

The “dynamic duo” from the Marvel “movie-verse” (THOR: RAGNAROCK and AVENGERS: ENDGAME) prove to be a most potent team in this franchise. Once again, Hemsworth is a very appealing action star with a surprising knack for comedy (the last GHOSTBUSTERS made this clear). He’s another likable goofball “himbo” as the often slow, but very confident Agent H. Plus his chemistry with co-star Thompson pulls us through the most outrageous plot turns. Her Agent M is part straight…lady, part wise-cracking “brainiac’, and always a seeker of truth and wonder. Their respective bosses have the right balance of snark and gravitas in Emma Thompson and Neeson (a nice tweak on his recent action roles). Hemsworth has a terrific conniving rival in Rafe Spall as the usually seething with jealousy Agent C. Rebecca Ferguson has a nice sexy fling as galactic gun moll (and past paramour of H) Riza. But some of the film’s biggest laughs come from its smallest of characters. Kumail Nanjiani delivers his impressive comic timing as the diminutive alien soldier Pawny, who (much to her chagrin) is slavishly devoted to M.

Director F. Gary Gray (STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON) tries to bring a fresh approach to this 22 year-old franchise, and dazzles us with some of the new alien “beasties’ and the shiny high-tech gizmos, while giving nods to previous installments (the talking bulldog, the roaches, even a portrait of the first flick’s final battle). Unfortunately, the main plot involving another ultimate planet-destroying thing-a-mabob feels more than a tad trite. There’s an element of creepy danger in the twin assassins on their trail (literally “killing it” on the dance floor), but their finale showdown, much like the film’s last act, is a bit underwhelming. To justify the film’s subtitle, the action bounces from London to Merikeshh to Naples, but the different venues add little to the story’s flow. The new cast is fresh, but the mission feels fairly stale as the CGI effects drown out this delightful duo. MEN IN BLACK: INTERNATIONAL is just not worth the trip. Now, please look directly at this….

LITTLE WOODS – Review

“Welcome to Hard Times”. That’s the name of a classic Western flick from over fifty years ago. But it could just as well be the title of this new film, which is being touted as a modern-day Western. This may be due mainly to the fact that this is set in the American West because the basic plot owes much more to the classic film noir dramas. As with many examples of that celebrated genre, the protagonist really wants to go straight after doing a “stretch in the joint”. Of course, life on the outside is full of set-backs and plain ole’ bad breaks that can only be cleared up by fast easy cash. And so the lure of crime beckons with one last job, a “big score”. Oh, another couple of things make this story unique. There’s a smuggling trip to the border, though not South. And the two main protagonists are women (not the typical noir females, neither dangerous seductresses nor faithful “good girls”). And the plot hinges on the secret buried beneath LITTLE WOODS.

As the film begins, we see Ollie (Tessa Thompson) dropping a package in a newly dug hole in the said forest as a new day dawns. Walking along the nearby road in the early morning light, she sees a police cruiser slowly passing by. Then it abruptly turns around and ambles toward her. BEEP, the alarm jolts her awake. Ollie shuffles to the kitchen to begin whipping up snacks for the crew working the nearby oil rigs. They appreciate her coffee and burritos, but they hope for something extra from her. We later learn during a check-in with her sympathetic parole officer Carter (Lance Reddick) that Ollie was arrested for selling prescription meds (oxy, valium, etc.) she smuggled in from Canada (hospitals and doctors are miles away with day-long wait times). She’s got one last probation interview in just a couple weeks. But it’s not clear sailing. The house Ollie got from the mother who adopted her is about to be taken by the bank. Her kid sister Deb (Lily James) can’t help. She’s a single mother with an adorable seven-year-ol son Johnny (Charlie Ray Reid) who barely survives working as a waitress at the local bar and grill. The boy’s oil worker pop Ian (James Badge Dale) gives them no financial support, so the two live in a beaten-down RV illegally “planted” in a shopping center parking lot (she tosses the towing warnings that they stick on the windshield). And Deb is pregnant again. The sisters meet with a bank rep who cuts them a deal: half the owed amount, three grand, in the next ten days. Ollie thinks the only option is to dig up the merch in those woods, and move them quickly. this raises the ire of rival dealer Bill (Luke Kirby). And when disaster strikes, the trio (Ollie, Deb, and Johnny) has to make that northward trek one last time.

Thompson adds her tough, but sympathetic portrayal of Ollie to her impressive list of roles as she easily goes from “indie” work (this and SORRY TO BOTHER YOU) and the big studio flicks (the CREED series and Valkyrie at Marvel). She shows a strong, but flawed woman, one who has been shouldering the burden for so many for so long, that she can do little for her self. Thompson shows us this in her expressive eyes: the sadness, the disappointment, and the constant fatigue as she tries to stay a step ahead of the forces that would take everything from her. Ollie may be down, but she rises to fight once more, if not for herself then for the only family she has left, sister Deb and nephew Johnny. James, usually seen in period pieces like DARKEST HOUR (she was CINDERELLA, for goodness sake), is a stunner as the scrappy, emotionally battered single mom. She has much of the same feisty strength as her big sis, but is in a constant battle with her insecurities, needing to draw on Ollie’s confidence. James shows her near collapse into despair, then her agonizing struggle to pull herself out of the pit of hopelessness bolstered by her son and sister’s love. The men definitely take a back seat to this compelling duo, but their characters are strikingly different. The antagonists are Dale’s surly manipulative deadbeat dad Ian, who becomes Ollie’s reluctant “go-between”, and Kirby as the intimidating drug competitor who threatens Ollie just minutes after tenderly interacting with his young daughter. But one man sees potential in Ollie. Reddick emotes a father-like gentleness toward her as the tough but fair parole officer who forms a tentative friendship with the jaded Ollie. He’s her “port in the storm”. Ollie may fear getting busted when she’s back “in the game”, but her greatest dread may be seeing the look on his face after she’s let him down.

Director/writer Nia DaCosta, in her feature film debut, has crafted a lean taut look at those every day, barely-getting-by, small-towners that don’t get to be the focus of many films. The sisters push themselves out of their beds (Ollie still sleeps on the floor of her mother’s bedroom months after she’s passed on) and jump on the soul-sucking barely-a-job treadmill to live paycheck-to-paycheck. The lure of dealing is too tempting despite the danger. DaCosta expertly ratchets up the tension as the women skirt detainment and even death. A meeting in the dead of night with a pair of skeevy fake ID makers, getting the “stinkeye” from a leery receptionist, even a casual encounter with a lawman are tense, nail-biting encounters. All these desperate actions are set against a cruel cold North Dakota sky that barely allows the sun to break through. But DaCosta’s confidnet direction and her tough and tender sisters make LITTLE WOODS a most compelling destination.

It’s Creed VS Drago In First Trailer For CREED II Starring Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson

It’s the ultimate showdown ROCKY fans have been waiting for. The sons of Drago and Creed going head to head.

In our rankings of the ROCKY films, ROCKY IV ko’d the number spot.

” It is 1985 and Rocky is now a superstar and millionaire. The cold-war was still a thing then and Rocky has to fight the giant blonde Russian, Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) to avenge the death of best friend and mentor Apollo Creed. What makes this come in at #1 is that this movie is just awesome! From the cheesy musical montages set to 80’s pop anthems (the training montage is one of the best ones you will ever see), to Rocky’s inspirational message of world peace, this movie gives you all the feels. It also kicked American patriotism into high gear.”

CREED 2 Begins Production In Philadelphia – Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone and Tessa Thompson Back For Sequel

Production begins today in Philadelphia on Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Creed II, starring Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone, reprising their roles of Adonis Creed and Rocky Balboa respectively. Creed II is the continuation of the Rocky saga and sequel to the 2015 critically acclaimed and crowd-pleasing 2015 hit Creed, which took in more than $170 million at the worldwide box office. Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), who directed the first film, returns to the franchise as an executive producer on Creed II.

The new film is being directed by Steven Caple Jr., who helmed the acclaimed 2016 drama The Land.

“When I wrote and directed Creed, I wanted to tell a human story about a family from a new perspective, while also paying homage to the Rocky characters we’ve all grown up knowing and loving. I’ve known Steven was an amazing filmmaker since our days at USC film school together, so I can’t wait to see what he, Sly, Mike and Tessa bring to this next chapter,” said Coogler.  (review)

Caple Jr. said, “It’s an honor to be a part of the franchise and work with such a thoughtful team. I got involved because I’ve always been a Rocky fan and I enjoy stories with heart and substance. But when Ryan put his touch on Creed I felt another level of connection to the franchise. It started to feel personal for many different reasons. This next Creed is a tale beyond the boxing ring and dives deep into family, legacy, and fears. I’m excited to share my view and collaborate with the talented cast and crew.”

“Ryan and Steven are voices for their generation and their shared vision for Creed has brought the Rocky franchise to an entirely new audience. We know audiences will continue to embrace the legacy that Sly created so many years ago,” said producer Irwin Winkler.

Life has become a balancing act for Adonis Creed. Between personal obligations and training for his next big fight, he is up against the challenge of his life. Facing an opponent with ties to his family’s past only intensifies his impending battle in the ring. Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what’s worth fighting for, and discover that nothing’s more important than family. Creed II is about going back to basics to rediscover what made you a champion in the first place, and remembering that, no matter where you go, you can’t escape your history.

Also reprising their roles from the first film are Tessa Thompson as Bianca, Phylicia Rashad as Mary Anne, Wood Harris as Tony ‘Little Duke’ Burton, and Andre Ward as Danny ‘Stuntman’ Wheeler. The new cast is rounded out with Florian “The Big Nasty” Munteanu as Viktor Drago, Dolph Lundgren returning to the role of Ivan Drago, and Russell Hornsby as Buddy Marcelle. Creed II will be distributed theatrically in the U.S. by MGM on November 21, 2018, and Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the film internationally.

Caple Jr. directs from an original screenplay written by Stallone based on characters from the Rocky franchise. The film is produced by Irwin Winkler, Charles Winkler, William Chartoff, David Winkler, Kevin King-Templeton and Stallone. Coogler, Jordan and Guy Riedel will executive produce.

Collaborating with Caple Jr. is a creative team led by director of photography Kramer Morgenthau (Thor: The Dark World, Game of Thrones); production designer Franco Carbone (The Expendables, Billionaire Boys Club); costume designers Lizz Wolf (A Single Man, Dreamgirls); art director Jesse Rosenthal (Black Panther, Trumbo); fight coordinator Daniel Hernandez (Avengers: Infinity War, The Fate of the Furious); technical boxing advisor Robert Sale (Grudge Match, Ali); special effects coordinator Patrick White (Baby Driver, Deepwater Horizon) and VFX producer Crystal Dowd (Straight Outta Compton, Pitch Perfect 2). Filming will take place primarily in Philadelphia with additional locations in New Mexico.
