Tribute to Include Lumet’s Academy Award®-Nominated Work in 12 Angry Men (1957),
Dog Day Afternoon (1975) and Network (1976), Plus TCM’s Private Screenings: Sidney Lumet (2005)

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will remember the extraordinary career of five-time Academy Award®-nominated director and 2005 honorary Oscar® winner Sidney Lumet on Thursday, April 21. The memorial tribute is set to begin at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) with Lumet’s outstanding jury-room drama 12 Angry Men (1957). The lineup will also include The Hill (1965), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), Network (1976) and an encore presentation of TCM’s Private Screenings: Sidney Lumet (2005), an in-dept conversation between Lumet and TCM host Robert Osborne.

The following is a complete schedule of TCM’s April 21 memorial tribute to Sidney Lumet (all times Eastern):

  • 8 p.m. – 12 Angry Men (1957) – Sidney Lumet earned his first Best Director Oscar nomination for harrowing drama set in the confines of a sweltering jury-deliberation room. Henry Fonda stars as the lone holdout on a case everyone else considers cut-and-dried. The outstanding ensemble cast includes such well-known character actors as Martin Balsam, Lee J. Cobb, E.G. Marshall, Jack Klugman, Jack Warden and Ed Begley.
  • 10 p.m. – Private Screenings: Sidney Lumet (2005) – Lumet sat down with TCM host Robert Osborne for this in-depth conversation about the director’s career.
  • 11 p.m. – The Hill (1965) – Lumet’s stark realism highlights this story of a group of British soldiers incarcerated in an army prison in North Africa and put through the ringer by a tough warden. Sean Connery stars, along with Ian Bannen, Ossie Davis, Roy Kinnear and Michael Redgrave.
  • 1:15 a.m. – Network (1976) – Lumet earned his third Oscar nomination for this brilliant satire of the television industry penned by Paddy Chayefsky. The story involves a crazed network newsman and the female exec determined to turn his outbursts into ratings gold. Oscar-winners Peter Finch and Faye Dunaway head up a cast that includes William Holden, Robert Duvall, Ned Beatty and Best Supporting Actress winner Beatrice Straight.
  • 3:30 a.m. – Dog Day Afternoon (1975) – Lumet’s second Best Director Oscar nomination came for this satirical look at a bank robbery gone horribly wrong. Al Pacino stars as the head of a gang holding bank employees hostage. John Cazale co-stars as a fellow robber, with Charles Durning as the hostage negotiator. Frank Pierson’s iconic screenplay earned the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

In addition to TCM’s on-air tribute to Lumet, the 2011 TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood will feature a special 35th anniversary screening of Network. The TCM Classic Film Festival takes place April 28-May 1.
