First Look At All-New Trailer For Paul Greengrass’ THE UPRISING Starring Andrew Garfield

Here’s a first look at the upcoming historical drama THE UPRISING.

From director Paul Greengrass, Andrew Garfield stars as the legendary leader of a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II. As war burns across England, he forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice and survival.

Wow – this looks epic. Has the BRAVEHEART vibe running through it as well as the true story of the the Peasants Revolt in 1381. “Triggered by economic hardship and oppressive taxation, the uprising briefly shook the foundations of the feudal system. Though the rebellion lasted less than a month and was violently suppressed, it fundamentally altered the socio-economic landscape of medieval England.”

Garfield is no stranger to war movies. He starred in Mel Gibson’s HACKSAW RIDGE in 2016. It was a film that was well received and garnered Oscars for Best Film Editing and Best Sound Mixing. The film received a total of six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director (Gibson), and Best Actor (Garfield).

Greengrass’ most recent project is The Lost Bus (Academy Award-winner Matthew McConaughey and Academy Award-nominee America Ferrera) for Apple Original Films, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. It’s refereshing to see Blumhouse with a film that’s not horror.

Jason Blum is producing through Blumhouse, alongside Gregory Goodman, Joanna Kaye and Greengrass. Lars Sylvest will also produce through Thank You Pictures and Joe Neurauter will produce through Supernix. 

Focus Features will release THE UPRISING in theaters on September 11th.

First Reactions From TIFF At Chris Pine In Netflix’s OUTLAW KING

OUTLAW KING had its debut as the Opening Night Film at the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, September 6.

MARY SHELLEY Original Motion Picture Soundtrack By Amelia Warner Drops May 25

Universal Music Classics/Decca Gold announced today, the release of the score to the highly anticipated biopic from IFC Films, Mary Shelley, which features original music by composer Amelia Warner (Mum’s List).  Mary Shelley will be released digitally on May 25th – the same date the film premieres in theaters in the US.

In describing the composition process, Amelia emphasized the ghostly themes of the film by utilizing vocalists and orchestral rhythms to assist in telling this illuminating tale.

“We used a lot of synths layered with the orchestra. The real strings layered with electric synths created a strangeness and modernity that I think works well with Mary’s character. We found some amazing musicians and two incredible singers who are a huge part of the score. We used a soprano and a counter tenor and had them sing in a very expressive way. For example, when things start to go a bit crazy in those Geneva scenes, we got the singers to scream and to slide up and down the scale to create an unsettling disorientation.  It was a difficult cue and took a while to get right. Voice was really important as were the strings, which are slightly discordant. We also used breath and heartbeat to feel like we are experiencing it as Mary.”

The film follows the stormy relationship between Shelley and renown romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley.  Mary and Percy declare their love for each other and much to her family’s horror they run away together, joined by Mary’s half-sister Claire. In the midst of growing tension within their relationship, during their stay at Lord Byron’s house at Lake Geneva, the idea of Frankenstein is conceived when a challenge is put to all houseguests to write a ghost story. A monstrous character is created, which will permanently stake its claim on popular culture worldwide, but society at the time puts little value in women authors. At the young age of 18, Mary is forced to challenge these biases, to protect her work and to develop her own identity.

Born in Merseyside in 1982, the only child of actors Alun Lewis and Anita Ekblom, Amelia Warner first made a name for herself as an actor. She starred in the 2001 BBC production of R.D. Blackmore’s Lorna Doone, and soon established herself as a performer of quiet insight in films such as Philip Kaufman’s Quills, Adam Rap’s Winter Passing and Stephen Wooley’s Brian Jones biography, Stoned. On the set, in down time, Warner would compose music and write songs, a passion that had been there since childhood.  Using the name Slow Moving Millie (a playful nickname from friends who felt she should do more with her music, and fast) Warner began to create music. Her first major project was scoring British short film Mam, which won several awards on the film festival circuit.  Working with an old midi keyboard, Warner came to Universal a new EP titled “Arms”, produced by Fyfe Dangerfield. These five poignant, textured pieces for grand piano took Warner to No. 1 in the iTunes classical music charts. Following “Arms” came her second EP “Visitors”, which featured 7 songs each based off of a fictional female character and gave her another No 1. on iTunes.

In 2016, Amelia scored her first feature length film – Mum’s List – and is now scoring the upcoming film Mary Shelley, a movie about the writer’s love affair with Percy Bysshe Shelley – the relationship that inspired her to write Frankenstein.

Focus Features has released a brand new photo of Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill from the upcoming film DARKEST HOUR. The film also stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James, Stephen Dillane, Ronald Pickup, and Ben Mendelsohn.

Driected by Joe Wright (“Atonement,” “Hanna,” “Pride & Prejudice,” “Anna Karenina”), the first poster and official trailer will debut tomorrow.

Gary Oldman stars as Winston Churchill for director Joe Wright in DARKEST HOUR, which has begun production in the U.K. Focus Features holds worldwide rights to the Working Title Films production as part of the company’s renewed global initiative.

Focus will release Darkest Hour domestically on November 24th, 2017 in the U.S. and Universal Pictures International (UPI) will distribute the film globally, beginning with the U.K. on December 29th, 2017.

The original screenplay of DARKEST HOUR is by Anthony McCarten, an Academy Award nominee and BAFTA Award winner as screenwriter of Focus and Working Title’s Best Picture Oscar nominee The Theory of Everything. Mr. McCarten and Academy Award nominee and BAFTA Award winner Lisa Bruce (The Theory of Everything) are producing Darkest Hour with Working Title co-chairs Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, and BAFTA Award winner Douglas Urbanski (Nil by Mouth), reteaming with Focus and Working Title following Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, for which Mr. Oldman was a Best Actor Oscar nominee.

Review: 44 INCH CHEST

One of the first things to pop into my mind when I first heard about 44 INCH CHEST was �What an interesting title? I wonder where it came from?� Maybe it refers to a measurement, or maybe it�s something entirely abstract. To be honest, after seeing the movie I still couldn�t tell you the meaning for sure, if there even is a meaning. However, what I can tell you is that 44 INCH CHEST is a film that drew me in, wrapped its sharply written dialogue and it�s enigmatic story around my brain for 95 minutes of cinematic excellence.

Written by Louis Mellis and David Scinto, who previously gave us the British gangster film SEXY BEAST, and directed by Malcolm Venville in his feature film debut, 44 INCH CHEST hits audience heads with a hammer of hardcore dialogue. The fast-paced, sharp-tongued conversations that dominate this film are reminiscent of David Mamet, if he had written RESERVOIR DOGS.

Ray Winstone (SEXY BEAST, THE PROPOSITION) plays Colin Diamond, a rough-handed gangster struggling to cope with the revelation that his long-time wife has not only cheated on him, but is leaving him for another man. Perplexed and driven in and out of psychotic states of remorse, anger and confusion, Colin holds up in an old abandoned row house with four friends and fellow gangsters as they determine what they plan to do about this grave insult against Colin.

This rag-tag group of aging gangster relics is a sight for sore eyes. That is, if you enjoy fine acting. Stephen Dillane (NINE LIVES, THE HOURS) plays the youngest-looking of the bunch named Mal, who also happens to be the least personally affected by the disgrace. Tom Wilkinson (ROCKNROLLA, MICHAEL CLAYTON) plays Archie, who appears to be the man in charge. With that said, Ian McShane (DEATH RACE, DEADWOOD) plays the well-dressed and very well spoken homosexual gangster Meredith, who happens to be the one most in control when necessary. Finally, John Hurt (V FOR VENDETTA, HELLBOY) plays Old Man Peanut, the eldest and most foul-mouthed of the criminal lot.

44 INCH CHEST is not your typical gangster flick. This is a dialogue driven film, with a plot more closely resembling SUICIDE KINGS meet THE SOPRANOS than GOODFELLAS or THE GODFATHER. There are two primary elements to the progression of the story, all of which revolves around the ultimate decision of whether to engage in seeking vengeance and if so, how best to deliver that vengeance. The heart of what makes the story interesting however, is the journey in getting to that decision.

Winstone�s performance as the muscle-headed gangster Colin, most likely best known for his ability to �convince� a man to spill his beans, reveals a complex and dizzying display of human emotions as Colin�s mind does figure-eights and loopty-loops around itself in an attempt to make sense of his wife�s transgression. Manic-depressive, loaded on acid or roid-raging, Colin resembles the very worst of all three conditions before finally coming to an epiphany.

Meanwhile, Colin�s posse of partners engages in conversations, debates and philosophical ramblings that range from hilarious to reflective. The chemistry present between these four fine actors is worth its weight in gold. The banter that develops between Meredith and Old Man Peanut is priceless, while Archie and Mal provide the straight-man side of this four-way comedic coin.

The humor of 44 INCH CHEST isn�t overdrawn or wasted on petty jokes, but ingeniously evolves along with the story progresses. This is enhanced by the marvelous editing from Rick Russell, also making his feature film debut, which is particularly evident in a lengthy scene in which the four gangsters embark on a verbal lambasting of their captive adulterer. Each of the men�s dialogue is restricted to the most blunt, offensive and unenlightened of remarks but the scene is cut in such a way as to make this one of the most intriguing and artistically humorous portions of the film.

Rounding out the plethora of reasons 44 INCH CHEST is among the earliest of must-see indie films for 2010 is the score by Angelo Badalamenti. Having worked extensively with David Lynch, and effectively evoking a fantastically visual score for Jeunet and Caro on THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN, Badalamenti again creates a wonderfully moody and appropriate layer of musical texture within which the suspense of the story can gestate.

Overall, 44 INCH CHEST is a welcome and satisfying film to chew on; and chew on this film you will as you digest this beef jerky bit of semi-cerebral cinema. It very well may fall within the sleeper-hit category of 2010, but I encourage anyone who enjoyed SEXY BEAST or REVOLVER to seek this film out.

WAMG First Look at ‘Savage Grace’

Always a sucker for Julianne Moore films, I stumbled upon some promotional material for this new flick. The movie officially had a limited US release on May 28, 2008 but hasn’t made beyond the major markets yet. Savage Grace received enormous praise from audiences at Cannes and Sundance and there’s even some light buzz on the Internet about the gold guy.
