LUCK – Review

Okay parents, the countdown to the return of the school year is close to single-digit days. Really, hard to believe, eh? Well before you start stockpiling blender ingredients for a celebratory beverage, you’ve still got to keep them entertained in the hazy last couple of Summer weekends (naturally the temps are still soaring almost everywhere). So, that may warrant a multiplex trek for some matinee fare for them. If they’re leaning toward the animated features, then it’s almost certain they’ve caught up with the Minions (maybe more than once). And if the kiddos are very “pre-K” the PG-rated superhero slapstick of DC LEAGUE OF SUPER-PETS may be a tad overwhelming. Ah, but there is a PG alternative (very rare) opening this weekend. It’s the feature animated debut of a new “player” in the field, though a few familiar faces are behind the scenes. Like the film’s heroine, these “newbies” are hoping for a big “heapin’ helpin'” of good, good LUCK.

Now that heroine is an energetic eighteen-year-old woman named Sam Greenfield (voice of Eva Noblezada), who we first see helping her eight-year-old BFF Hazel make an online music video to the early Madonna tune “Lucky Star”. The two live in a group foster home and Sam is hoping the project will take her pal’s mind off of her upcoming “weekend visit” with some possible parents. Sam’s been through it many times before, with lots of letdowns, and now she’s aged out. The house’s supervisor takes her to her new apartment in the city, just blocks from her new job at a “plants and crafts” retail store. Believing to be “cursed” with bad luck, Sam almost misses her first “work day” due to multiple calamities (“alarm failure”, “locked in the bathroom”. “drops toast which lands jam side-down”, etc.). Happily her affable boss Marv (Lil Rel Howery) “cuts her some slack”. That night Sam can’t get a table at the neighborhood eatery, so she shares a sandwich with a friendly black cat at the curb. The kitty dashes, leaving behind a sparkly penny. Sam keeps it, intending to give it to Hazel for her art project. The next morning things go extremely well, making Sam think that the coin has reversed her luck. And then she drops it “you know where” in the store restroom. That night Sam returns to the diner hoping to see the cat once more. When he strolls over she tells him what happened. And he talks back! Bob (Simon Pegg) leads her on a merry chase, ending in an alley where he drops down into a magical glowing portal. Sam follows and soon finds herself in the “Land of Luck” where she and Bob begin a hectic quest to retrieve that “lucky penny” and restore the balance of luck in that dimension and in Sam’s world.

Oh, the new studio I mentioned earlier? It’s Skydance Animation a branch of Skydance Media working out of Madrid (formerly Llion Studios). And the familiar name behind the film is none other than John Lassiter. The marketers are hyping the flick as being from the “minds behind TOY STORY”, but not mentioning that he was booted out of Disney Pixar during the MeToo movement. And this irked lots of SA staffers. But how’s the flick itself? Well, he couldn’t have picked a more mediocre first effort there. Perhaps it earned the “G” rating due to its complete lack of “bite”, really it’s toothless and so bland. Eh, aside from some truly unneeded scatology in which we learn that “Bad Luck Land” has a whole subdivision dedicated to canine excrement. Plus we get a long “hold shot” of a drone just grabbed from a sewage treatment plant, looking as though it’s been dipped in Chocolate (oh that it was). And just somehow the main “hero’s objective” is more convoluted than the last two MISSION IMPOSSIBLE flicks (also from Skydance BTW). Oh, the visual look conforms to the generic script, with human characters whose eyes take up two-thirds of their heads leaving them with teeny mouths barely readable. The giant dragon (voiced by Jane Fonda making her animation debut) has an interesting “molded plastic” vinyl toy feel (ready for the merch). However, Bob the Cat is “meh”, along with his voice as Pegg gives out his Scottish brogue from the Trek reboots and makes us think of Shrek. But that’s not the end of the “homages” (more like lifts) as Jeff the Unicorn (voiced by Flula Borg) seems to somehow be a close relation to the bouncing Germanic pig from the SING series (and what’s with the bushy “trash-stash”). The closest the tale has to a “baddie” is Whoopi Goldberg’s “The Captain” who comes off as a mildly annoyed librarian. Here’s a heads up for the talented Mr. Howery: perhaps steer clear of smiling guys wearing name tags as you’re recalling your FREE GUY role. If the film looked interesting it might make the endless 105 minutes seem less of an unending slog as it mercilessly spins its wheels (they’ve got to get another “device”…c’mon). The very smallest viewers may be entranced for a bit by the colors and the animals, but the best bet for adults might be streaming so they can drop “in and out’ of this listless drek. Otherwise, they’ll feel as though they’ve completely run outta’ LUCK.

Watch Tom Cruise Perform A Death-Defying Stunt In First Teaser For MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE

Next year Tom Cruise returns as Impossible Missions Force (IMF) team leader Ethan Hunt in the long awaited next chapter in the successful franchise, with Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm.

The cast includes Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, Shea Whigham, Pom Klementieff, Esai Morales, Henry Czerny, Rob Delaney, Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, Charles Parnell, Greg Tarzan Davis, Frederick Schmidt.

Check out this first look at MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE.

Cruise, who launched the franchise in 1996, is truly an entertainer who wants to give audiences a film more thrilling and intense than its predecessor. This is the third film in the series that Cruise and McQuarrie have collaborated on following MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION (2015), MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT (2018) and now MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE. McQuarrie, an Oscar winner for his screenplay for The Usual Suspects, and Cruise previously teamed up for the 2012 film JACK REACHER.

Fans of the popular franchise will be glad to see the return on Ving Rhames, who has played the character of Luther Stickell since the first Mission: Impossible film in 1996, as well as Benji Dunn, played by actor, comedian and filmmaker Simon Pegg.

Over the past two decades, Tom Cruise has produced, starred in and performed in the most mind-blowing stunts in the Mission: Impossible films, a global cultural phenomenon that has grossed more than $2.8 billion worldwide, making it one of the most successful franchises in movie history. With TOP GUN: MAVERICK opening this weekend, both films solidify Tom Cruise’s status as the biggest movie star on the planet.

Based on the TV series by Bruce Geller, the seventh MI film is set to hit theaters on July 14, 2023.

THE ICE AGE ADVENTURES OF BUCK WILD – Review

Crash (voiced by Seann William Scott), Eddie (voiced by Josh Peck), Zee (voiced by Justina Machado), and Buck (voiced by Simon Pegg) in THE ICE AGE ADVENTURES OF BUCK WILD, exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Disney Enterprises, Inc. © 2022 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Whoa, talk about deja vu! it seems like it was just a couple of weeks ago when I was reviewing a new addition to a much-beloved animation franchise…and it was. And here we go again. I’m guessing that the streaming services believe that the winter weather will keep the “wee ones” indoors during January, along with the various Covid “surging waves”. So yes, like that previous flick, this animated outing will bypass theatres and “drop” on a popular platform. Oh, and there are several other big comparisons that we’ll discuss later. And did I mention that this one somewhat celebrates the 20th anniversary of the franchise? Indeed, as it’s the sixth series entry, though it spotlights a few of the later supporting players, hence its complex moniker, THE ICE AGE ADVENTURES OF BUCK WILD.

After a brief series summary from Ellie the Wooly Mammoth, we’re cavorting through the snowy slopes with twin possums Eddie (voice of Aaron Harris) and Crash (Vincent Tong), which results in an avalanche that wrecks the “family oasis” they share with adopted big “sis” Ellie, her mate Manny, Sabre-tooth tiger Diego, and Sid the Ground Sloth. After they relocate, the twins are given a stern lecture, which, of course, doesn’t “take”. Just past bedtime, the dup decides to go out on their own. Soon, they cause a big crack in the frozen surface which sends them plunging to the entrance to the “Lost World”, the warm underground home of the last dinosaurs, a place Ellie has told them to avoid. And you guessed it, the twins march in and are quickly set upon by the ravenous raptor henchmen of the “big-brained” genius dino known as Orson (Utkarsh Ambudkar). Luckily the brothers are rescued by an old pal, the swashbuckling weasel hero Buck Wild (Simon Pegg). However, their safety is temporary as Buck tells them of Orson’s master plan to rule the “dino paradise”. Even with the help of resourceful zorilla Zee, can Buck and the boys thwart the devious dino and his reptilian army? And is there a chance that Eddie and Crash will re-unite with Ellie, Manny, Diego, and Sid?

Perhaps the bigger question is: Will anybody really care? It’s all a rather uninspired extension of what was once an engaging entertaining franchise. As I hinted earlier, this is only a couple of weeks after the latest HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA skipped theatres and headed right to Amazon Prime streaming, so the somewhat shaky groundwork has been laid. While two of the many series voice actors of HOTEL passed on reprising their roles, none of the ICE AGE originals lent their voices here, save for the always energetic Pegg, whose character was introduced a couple of flicks ago. And yes, Buck is a nice satirical spin on the jaunty action hero, though he’s not really the focus of the flimsy plot. That’s the job for twins Crash and Eddie who are bland and nearly interchangeable, much like a less mischievous, but furrier version of the Katzenjammer Kids (how’s that for an ancient reference). Plus the villains are pretty “blah” too, with vague motivations and a messy masterplan. Zee’s a fun fluffy spin on Lara Croft, but she’s used as an easy “out” for quick escapes while deferring to Buck too often. Perhaps the biggest crime is the booting of the original quartet (Ellie, Manny, Diego, and Sid) to the sidelines, absent for great chunks of the tale. The look of the film is lush with vibrant jungles and shimmering streams, plus the character designs have a toy-like vibe with the raptors being multi-colored gangly goofballs rather than the JURASSIC PARK demons. But everything’s ground to a halt by the stalled story and the lackluster pacing (mammoths move faster). Our old prehistoric pals deserve a better farewell than the tepid, not-so-nice THE ICE AGE ADVENTURES OF BUCK WILD.

Simon Pegg in HOT FUZZ Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

” It’s not murder, it’s ketchup!”

Simon Pegg in HOT FUZZ (2007) plays midnights this weekend (August 9th and 10th) at the Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.  A Facebook invite for the event can be found HERE

HOT FUZZ tells the story of London supercop Constable Nicholas Angel (played by Simon Pegg). Angel is one baaaad man! He has a ridiculously high arrest rate and is in top physical and mental shape. But his cronies in the London police are jealous of his success b/c he is as the London Chief Inspector says ‘making them all look bad’. So Angel is transferred to the small, quiet English burg of Sandford. The head of Sandford’s police force, Inspector Frank Butterman (played by Jim Broadbent in a lively, funny performance) assures Angel that nothing ever goes on in Sandford and that there hasn’t been a murder or major case in 20 years! Of course, Angel, ever the suspicious and dedicated cop, immediately finds trouble in virtually EVERY situation. There are times in the film where you actually believe that Angel is actually paranoid b/c of his anal personality, even though you know that he is indeed right: there’s SOMETHING wrong in Sandford! We constantly see right before several ‘accidents’ a mysterious hooded figure murdering prominent town citizens.

HOT FUZZ sports a great cast of quirky characters that, along with Inspector Butterman, comprise the town’s NWA (for Neighborhood Watch Alliance) played brilliantly by veteran actors: grocery store magnate Simon Skinner (one of the former JAMES BONDs Timothy Dalton), surveillance expert Tom Weaver (THE EQUALIZER Edward Woodward), the bicycling schoolmarm Amanda Paver (Lorraine Hilton), Dr. Hatcher (Stuart Wilson), hotel owner Joyce Cooper (Billie Whitelaw), pub owners Roy and Mary Porter (Peter Wright and Julia Deakin), Rev. Shooter (Paul Freeman), candy shop owner Annette Roper (Patricia Franklin), local farmer James Reaper (Kenneth Cranham), and flower shop owner Leslie Tiller (Anne Reid). Don’t miss the chance to see it again on the big screen when it plays midnights at The Tivoli this weekend!

The Tivoli’s located at 6350 Delmar Blvd., University City, MO. Admission is a mere $8!

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT – Review

Oh no, those dreaded “back to school” commercials and sales flyers are suddenly popping up everywhere. Action film fans must realize that the Summer movie season will be over in a few short weeks. Serious cinema will be on its way post Labor Day. SKYSCRAPER was weeks away, while the return of Denzel as THE EQUALIZER may be too brutal for the pre-teen date crowds (it”s rated “R” for “really rough”). The superheroes have packed away their tights and capes for a few months. How about some spies, instead? Well, we won’t be seeing the “JB” duo, Bond and Bourne, anytime soon. So, blockbuster thriller fans will have to rely on another franchise, now in its 22nd year and its sixth installment. And all from a broadcast network TV show, which had a pretty good run of seven seasons, along with one of the greatest opening title music tracks ever (as instantly recognizable as Monty Norman’s 007 intro riff). Of course having one of the biggest movie stars of the last four decades helps. Multiplexes may need to install safety belts to their theatre seats as Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt to lead his IMF (Impossible Missions Force) in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE-FALLOUT.

This mission begins with Hunt (Cruise) getting his latest assignment via the signature device (a compact reel to reel tape deck) from the TV show (the second best holdover from the series other than Lalo Schifrin’s iconic theme). If course it’s “tricked-out” with a video projector and a pop-up needle to grab a blood sample ID (ouch). Hunt learns of the underground terror organization known as “the Apostles” and its mysterious leader “John Lark” (a phony name for an individual whose face is unknown). They plan to change civilazation through chaos (“the bigger the war, the bigger the peace”) and are targeting three cities with great religious significance (naturally). Seems that three globes of plutonium have been smuggled out of the former Soviet Union, and Lark has plans for them as part of three portable explosive devices. Ethan accepts the mission (was there any doubt) and soon his team, Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg), are posing as buyers for the globes. Unfortunately an unknown third party disrupts the dark alley deal, and the globes are “in the wind”. After a nifty bit of deception pulled on a radical scientist, the IMF learns that the globes are in Paris, the property of a lauded philanthropist/secret arms provider known as the “White Widow” (Vanessa Kirby). But just as Ethan’s boss, former CIA head Hunley (Alec Baldwin), is about to send Hunt to a meeting with the Widow, the current CIA director Sloan (Angela Bassett) arrives on the tarmac with her number one operative August Walker (Henry Cavill). Sloan informs Hunley that the president is tired of the IMF’s “Halloween” games, and since they lost the globes, the CIA will now take over. After some fast negotiations, the operation becomes a joint mission between the two agencies with Hunt and Walker now a team (the two are most reluctant ). The men continue to butt heads during the Paris meet, even as they are suddenly joined by a former acquaintance of Hunt’s, MI-6 agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who we saw in the last film MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION. The quest for the deadly globes soon involves a former IMF foe, master terrorist Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) from MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, and even Hunt’s former wife Julia (Michelle Monaghan). Perhaps the film’s subtitle should’ve been “Homecoming”.

The “golden boy”, who’s now 56, bounces back from his last two action flick disasters (AMERICAN MADE was a character “dramedy”, while THE MUMMY and the second Jack Reacher debacles stopped two franchises dead in their tracks), much as Ethan seems to bounces off any surface with the slightest of injuries (a limp that lasts seconds till he’s back to full flexibility). His ability to “sell” a stunt or “action gag” is still a marvel, but Cruise is no mere “mint” action figure toy. We get to see a bit more of what makes Hunt “tick”. Yes, he’s a confident, always charging (primo Cruise running meme material here) dynamo, but there’s an inner conflict. He doesn’t want to harm an innocent, or “civilian”, no matter the stakes . He’s paying a big price here for his humanity. His “missions” have cost him a new romance (with Ilsa or even the sultry Widow) and his former wife. Plus there’s the continued frustration of having his loyalties doubted via a really elaborate “frame”. Cruise shows us Hunt’s physicality and conflicted soul, which gives all the shooting, jumping, dangling, and punching an extra “oomph”. As for his teammates, Rhames also shows his warmer side, being more than just “the man in the van”. Unfortunately the gifted Pegg has less opportunity to showcase his comedic gifts in this outing, but he gets in on the stunts a bit more. Ferguson still generates some sparks with Cruise, as his female counterpart whose motives always seem questionable. She’s out for herself, despite the helping hand she offers. Baldwin’s an endearing “hard case”, who goes from strict taskmaster to supportive father-like mentor. Harris is pure dead-eyed evil, his words spitting from his beard like a snake’s venom-tipped tongue. Bassett is “cold as ice’ as the smooth, demanding rival. The great surprise here is Cavill, the man from Krypton who’s truly  playing against type as the arrogant, back-stabbing (literally) ruthless Walker, almost the “anti-Ethan”. With his glaring eyes and thick mustache (no CGI there), he’s the bullying jock as ultimate blunt force weapon. Even though he’s on “our side”, he’s just as dangerous as any of the thugs and assassins.

Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie is another returning IMF vet having helmed the last installment (he’s the first director of two MI flicks). He keeps things moving at a brisk pace, improving on his work in ROGUE NATION (though the series best remains MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL from INCREDIBLES 2’s Brad Bird), making sure the time between action set pieces is brief. This is one film that requires you to get your snacks (and do your bathroom business) before it begins, so as to not take a chance on missing some incredible stunt work. As for the script, it doesn’t feel as though the plot was shoe-horned into said stunt scenes, rather it has a more natural flow. But, as with many entries in this franchise, there are a few too many double, triple and quadruple crosses, stretching plausibility for the team to predict and prepare for any outcome (one character actually says something close to “Why must it always be so difficult?”). And as said earlier, we just have to believe that Cruise and company have endless stamina and Wolverine-like healing abilities (if the FAST AND THE FURIOUS series can ignore the laws of gravity, then…). After all, audiences return again and again to see what crazy bits of derring-do will try and top previous installments. McQuarrie and crew promise thrills and they certainly deliver, along with gorgeous exotic locations and impeccably tailored heroes and villains. Right now, the biggest “bang for your buck”, action-wise is the sixth, but far from final dangerous assignment, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT. Somewhere the spirits of those first film action stars, Fairbanks, Keaton, and Lloyd must be pleased to see that the “thrill’ spectacles live on.
