Henry Golding (G.I. JOE: SNAKE EYES) stars in this highly entertaining, globe-trotting action thriller. The hunter becomes the hunted when an elite assassin (Golding) is given his final contract: to kill six people around the world – only to discover the targets are equally skilled assassins hired to kill him. His only shot to survive is to uncover the mysterious mastermind behind the deadly plot before it’s too late. Chris Pratt as Owen Grady in JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION
Hey, even though we haven’t really unpacked from last weekend’s summer vacation jaunt to FIRE ISLAND, are you ready for some more “globe-hopping”? Perhaps you’re in the mood for another island getaway near the tropics. Well, Isla Nublar off the coast of Costa Rica has been a real “cinema destination” for almost thirty years. Until about four years ago when a volcano wiped out its theme park and its major attractions; lots and lots of genetically engineered dinosaurs. Now you recall the place…er…park. Ah, but those adaptable “thunder lizards” didn’t expire under a wave of molten lava. Their fate, along with their various protectors, researchers, and exploiters, is revealed in this weekend’s big, really massive, studio feature film. So, is it the sixth in the franchise or the finale in the second trilogy? That distinction can be debated at the multiplexes when audiences experience JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION.
To get everyone up to speed (it’s been four years now), a faux cable TV news feature tells us the story of that lost island, the transfer of the dinosaurs to America (and eventually all around the globe), and the missing rumored cloned granddaughter, Maisie (Isabella Sermon) of the original park founder John Hammond. As a sidebar we’re told of eccentric inventor Lewis Dodgson (Campbell Scott), whose tech firm, BioSyn wants to provide a sanctuary for the dinos where they can be studied in hopes of providing cures for many of mankind’s problems (disease, famine, etc.). We’re then sent to the Northwestern US where former “raptor-wrangler” Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) is playing “cowboy” as he and his team coral different dinos into a “safe” secret area, away from gangs of nefarious “poachers. Ah, his lady love Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) is also doing her bit, but leading another team to liberate captured creatures at a mysterious lab/farm. The duo reunites in the secluded cabin they share with Maisie, who can’t resist speeding into town, and a lumber camp, with her bike. On one of her forest walks, she and Owen find this his old raptor Blue has given birth (a miracle). But there’s no time for rejoicing as both Maisie and Blue, Jr. are snatched up by the poacher gang, who seem to be working for someone with “big pockets’. Meanwhile, in West Texas, gigantic prehistoric locusts are decimating farmlands. A noted expert rushes there to investigate: Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern). But after examining one of the bugs, she brings in another “pair of eyes”, namely her old science partner Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill). Their findings point them to BioSyn, which now employs their old pal, Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) as a consultant. Across the country, Owen and Claire get a tip that Maisie and the baby raptor are going to Malta, where they’ll be put on a private jet to…you guessed it…BioSyn. There they hook up with a freelance pilot, Kayla (DeWanda Wise) to infiltrate the tech giant’s fortress-like lab in a wooded area in the “middle of nowhere”. Can they rescue the kidnapped duo? And will this intrepid trio cross paths with another, slightly older, but equally brainy and brave trio?
The biggest marketing “draw” for this flick is the reuniting of the main casts of the first and second trilogies (much like a certain “space saga”), so let’s start with the veterans of the 1990s (alright, into 2001). Dern shines the brightest of the trio as her Dr. Sattler is a more dynamic, “take charge” protagonist, able to keep her “cool” much longer than in the first flick, though she can still deliver that wide-eyed gaze of “awe’ as she tilts her head skyward (before letting out a wail), Neill is the dogged, a bit dour, “bone duster” who wants to grab at what might be his last chance and adventure (and Ellie). Goldblum seems to be doing a riff (perhaps even a parody) of his talk show/TV ads persona with his still halting, hesitant delivery (could he be turning into Shatner) while having a bit of fun with some social media “meme-fodder” of the first couple of “park jaunts”. As for the “kids”, Pratt gets little time to exercise his “hangdog’ screen charms before he’s in solid “action-hero mode” defying gravity and bouncing from one crash to the next with nary a scratch. Howard has a rougher time returning as Claire, now in “sensible footwear, but still the franchise’s “scream queen” though her “mama Grizzly” instinct has “switched on” thanks to her bonding with Maisie. Sermon has all the required teen “eye-rolling” and rebellious snark that most movie pre-teens exhibit, but with a touch of smart “self-discovery” as she learns of her true “origin story”. The big new addition to the “tentpole” is Scott as the current model of the big action flick “baddie”, as the vicious Russian mob kingpins are sent to the “straight-to-home-video” thrillers to make way for the socially awkward, twitchy, self-absorbed “brainiac”, an amalgam of media-savvy wunderkinds (the formula: a pinch of Musk, a dash of Zuckerburg, a hint of Gates, etc.). But there’s another good guy…er..lady tossed in as Wise puts a modern spin on the old scrappy “air jockeys”, who may bark, but will take you “up” for all the right reasons (“She’s held together by spit and chewing gum, but this ole’ bird’ll get you where ya’ need ta’ go!”). Oh, and there’s a supporting player from all the films, BD Wong as Dr. Wu, who’s more of a “sad scientist” than a mad one (“I can make things right”), while Omar Sy and Justice Smith, from WORLDs one and two, lend a brief hand in cameos.
Ugh, where to begin with this flick, that feels like two flicks clumsily smooshed together (it’s that old Reese’s Cup TV spot, “You got…in my…”). The movie’s momentum is completely “off the tracks” as we’re tossed back and forth from the “OG” dino trio to the recent couple as the script (it took three scribes) lurches from one locale (too many establishing subtitles …”Utah”, “Malta”, “West Texas”) and even switches genres as the action sequences in (again) Malta feels like a “Mission Impossible” extended chase, but with near-unstoppable CGI dinos (hey, I was hoping the looong pursuit might take them past the Sweethaven sets from 1980’s POPEYE…that’s how distracted I was). And then there were clumsy attempts at humor while lifting bits from better films. We see Goldberg doling out wisdom during a dull lecture, intercut with close-ups of his adoring, rapturous students (I expected one to have “I love you” scribbled on her eyelids). Of course, the leader of the poachers had greasy long hair and sneering southern accent (“Ah’ll git’ th’ gal fer ya’!”). Everything comes together (somewhat) when the “teams” unite during a big “destroy the HQ” sequence that goes on forever (“We need the passcodes”) where the dinos ignore the humans while they engage in a WWE-style “smackdown”. And LOCUSTS?! Really, who goes to a big dinosaur epic in hopes of seeing Corgi-sized grasshoppers…on fire (if only it were as campy and silly as the late show staple THE BEGINNING OF END with the much-missed Peter Graves). Of course re-introducing, these ancient behemoths to the planet would cause epic eco-damage, but aside from some highway encounters, they seem to be an inconvenience. After skipping the last installment Colin Trevorrow has returned to the director’s chair (oh, he was a writer on this, too), but his prior efforts don’t help to relieve the tedium as each character must engage in a heroic act for the admiration of their peers, while the CGI critters lumber in from the background to try and keep our attention. This is a movie “mess-terpiece” that should only satisfy the most diehard franchise fans eager to see “the band get back together”. It’s a shame the reunion is for the convoluted cinematic chaos of JURASSIC WORLD DOMINION. It’s pure prehistoric pablum.

The 1977 New Zealand thriller SLEEPING DOGS Starring Sam Neill and Warren Oates will be available on Blu-ray from Arrow Academy on April 17th
Adapted from C.K. Stead s novel Smith s Dream, Sleeping Dogs almost single-handedly kickstarted the New Zealand New Wave, demonstrating that homegrown feature films could resonate with both local and international audiences, and launching the big-screen careers of director Roger Donaldson (No Way Out, Species) and Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Possession).
Neill in his first lead role in a feature plays Smith, a man escaping the break-up of his marriage by finding isolation on an island off the Coromandel Peninsula. As he settles into his new life, the country is experiencing its own turmoil: an oil embargo has led to martial law and civil war, into which Smith reluctantly finds himself increasingly involved.
Co-starring Warren Oates (Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia) as the commander of a US army unit drawn into the conflict, Sleeping Dogs is simultaneously a political thriller, a personal drama and a true landmark in New Zealand cinema.

Though we’re still months away from the end of the school year, the studios still hope to entice the lil’ ones into the multiplex on the weekends with big screen adventures based on their beloved characters. Disney, for the last eighty years or so, has had a pretty strong lock on the classic storybook characters, many from the (often twisted) works of the Brothers Grimm, the ole’ “once upon a time” reliables. This has left the other studios to go after other inspirations, grabbing up the rights to lots of fairly recent “kids lit” best sellers. In the last decade we’ve had a franchise with flicks based on the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ series (mainly live action). Just last Summer the first of a hopefully long series of “Captain Underpants” CGI movies was released. Going back a bit further, Universal has grabbed a big chunk of the all ages market by acquiring the screen rights to the impressive lists of works penned by Theodore Geisel (AKA Dr. Seuss). While those go back nearly 70 years, a beloved star of a children book series that turns 60 this year, Michael Bond’s Paddington Bear, is now a box office and critical darling (his latest flick is still at 100% at Rotten Tomatoes). Now, just a few weeks after the lauded PADDINGTON 2 (and also mixing live-action actors with computer-animated critters), another children’s book animal “superstar’, still spry at 106, hops into theatres, that scourge of gardeners, it’s PETER RABBIT.
The gentle quiet of an idyllic British countryside is once again shattered by another battle in an ongoing war between Peter Rabbit (voice of James Corden) and old Mr. McGregor (Sam Neill). The ill-tempered fearsome farmer has a oppulent garden, really a bountiful buffet for the fearless furball. Peter’s now the main “bread-winner” (or is it “veggie-winner”) for his siblings, triplet sisters Flopsy (vo:Margot Robbie), Mopsy (vo:Elizabeth Debicki) and Cotton-Tail (vo:Daisy Ridley) along with cousin Benjamin Bunny (vo:Colin Moody), after the recent peaceful passing of their Mum and the violent demise of their Pop via McGregor’s deadly rake. Fortunately for the bunny brood, across the way resides the nature-loving artist Bea (Rose Byrne), who tries to protect Peter’s posse from her volatile neighbor. But on this day, Bea is not there to stop McGregor from grabbing Peter by the ears (he just had to retrieve his Dad’s old blue jacket). Before Peter becomes a tasty pie (his father’s fate), time, and a very unhealthy lifestyle, catches up with the gardener. Many miles away, in the heart of London, young Thomas McGregor (Dominhall Gleeson), oversees his staff before the lush department store Harrods opens his doors. Just as he is about to check the bathrooms (uh, you don’t wanna’ know), Thomas is called into the office of the general manager (Marianne Jean-Baptiste). Is it is his long-awaited promotion? Nope, that’s going to a neer-do-well relative of the owner (nepotism triumphs). Of course, Thomas doesn’t take it well, so he’s dismissed and security escorts him out of his beloved store. Alone in his flat, he gets a registered letter saying he has inherited the McGregor estate from an uncle he never knew existed. When he arrives at his new country home, Thomas is annoyed that it’s been taken over by Peter and his forest folk (talk about your “animal house”). Before Thomas can sell the place, he must make sure it’s spotless, with the garden safe and secure from the “vermin”. Ah, but then he meets his lovely neighbor Bea. Though the brief armistice has ended, can Thomas resume the war and defeat Peter’s crew, while wooing the beautiful Bea?
Dividing the cast between voice and live, Corden leads the pack at the microphone. His Peter’s a bit of braggart, often referring to himself as the hero, but he’s often trying to convince himself that he can survive his feats of “derring do”. It’s in the quieter moments, reflecting on the loss of his parents or calming his siblings, when we get Corden’s contagious charm and energy. Robbie, Ridley, and Debicki get to share in the fun as the squabbling sisters (a running gag has each one claiming to be the oldest, usually by mere seconds). As for those in front of the camera, Gleeson, like Hugh Grant in the last Paddington film, appears to be having a terrific time as the exasperated slapstick villain, literally bouncing off the walls at times. Though mainly known for his dramatic roles, Gleeson displays expert comic-timing (has there been a more regimented “floor-walker” at a retail hub) and graceful physicality during the manic action sequences. And he’s just as funny and more endearing as Bea melts his cold heart (and dissolves that stick up his “you-know”). Byrne lights up the screen , as the nurturing, patience but firm mother figure to all her neighbors, farmer and “furries”. She’s a paint-slinging Poppins trying to stop the mayhem outside her door. She didn’t have much luck with the elder McGregor who played by Neill as a ball of beet-red fury, a charging nightmarish monster. Back in the city, Jean-Baptiste is a most understanding supervisor, even as Gleeson’s rage stomps out his better judgement.
Director Will Gluck (EASY A) working from the screenplay he co-wrote with Rob Lieber brings the classic Beatrix Potter characters into the 21st century in a brash, chaotic style. In the first few seconds he thumbs his nose at “cutsey” critter capers by knocking down a quartet of sweetly singing birds, bowling pin style. At times, the hectic pace overwhelms turning the tale into a barnyard riff on HOME ALONE (you’d think that the McGregor line crossed the Fudd dynasty). And as with many “all ages” entertainment, they too often go for the easy “crude” gag (low-hanging britches plus carrot equals…). Yet somehow the film still has a good deal of charm. Another recurring joke concerns a rooster’s crowing (“Look! The Sun Came out again!Wow!”) and another that works concerns a refined pig who loses his manner around snacks. The countryside is dazzling as is the computer animation on Peter and company. A delightful bonus is the use of 2D animation for some flashback sequences, with the bunnies rendered in the manner of Potter’s original book illustrations (the watercolor effects are lovely). But this film comes up short being released just weeks after the glorious wit of that sweet British bear cub (the former has more consistent logic, since Paddington can converse, but Peter and his clan are hazy with sharing words with humans). The lil’ ones will squeal at the “knock-about” antics, and hopefully revisit the literary legacy of PETER RABBIT. That will make all the hare hi-jinks well worthwhile.

EVENT HORIZON (1997) plays this weekend (August 26th and 27th) at The Tivoli at midnight as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli midnight series.
EVENT HORIZON is almost 20 years old but it’s midnight movie cult status is fairly new. I saw it when it was new and thought it was good, but over the years a lot of younger movie geeks, to whom EVENT HORIZON as apparently struck a chord, have approached me wanting to talk about it, and now here we are presenting at midnight at The Tivoli. Good.
EVENT HORIZON was made in 1997 and is a somewhat conventional science-fiction horror film that reflects upon earlier sci-fi efforts such as 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY and ALIEN, yet owes as much to the some of the gorier horror films of the ‘80s, especially the Hellraiser series.
The Event Horizon is a spaceship with the capabilities to “travel faster than the speed of light.” In the year 2040, the ship hasn’t been heard from in seven years later, so a rescue mission aboard the U.S.S. Lewis and Clark is charged with bringing the crew and the entire ship of the Event Horizon back. Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne) is in charge of the operation. A British scientist, Dr. Weir (Sam Neill), haunted by the memories of his deceased wife, Claire, which are planted inside his deepest thoughts must join Miller and his crew for he was the one that designed the spaceship, Event Horizon. The rest of the cast consists of Peters (Kathleen Quinlin), and Justin (Jack Noseworthy), a rookie technician. Also, a psychologist, a pilot, and a wisecracking rescue technician round out the remaining characters. EVENT HORIZON is never predictable, the special effects are very good, and the film has a surreal, imaginative atmosphere that generates a breathtaking albeit claustrophobic fear. It really is ‘Hell in Space’
EVENT HORIZON was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who’s given us films in the MORTAL COMBAT, RESIDENT EVIL, and ALIEN VS PREDATOR series. Anderson has been accused of being a hack, but he delivers films with medium budgets and large scale special effects in a decent, workman-like manner. EVENT HORIZON is his best film – it’ wickedly scary, gory as hell, and does a good job showing what’s it like when people are forced to relive their own nightmares. It lacks logic and sense so if you’re looking for comprehension, look elsewhere. EVENT HORIZON was not a success upon its initial release and it may not have taken sci-fi-horror films to any new horizon, but it obviously stuck in the minds of filmgoers who caught up with at some point on DVD and I’m glad it’s showing midnights this weekend.
Don’t miss EVENT HORIZON when it screens midnights this weekend at The Tivoli
The Tivoli’s located at 6350 Delmar Blvd., University City, MO. Admission is a mere $8!
