David Crosby has a golden voice and has had a storied career as part of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and the Byrds, having sung or written songs that were the soundtrack of the Woodstock generation. Even if you don’t know his name, you recognize some of his songs. You have to admire his talent but as a person, David Crosby is less admirable and more complicated, as interviewer Cameron Crowe reveals in the first-rate documentary DAVID CROSBY: REMEMBER MY NAME.

The title is apt, as one of the first thing that comes up when others talk about the singer/songwriter is his ego. Cameron Crowe is the producer, not the director, of this documentary but he is the perfect choice as interviewer, since he has known Crosby since his days as a rock journalist in the ’60s, and parts of Crowe’s semi-autobiographical film ALMOST FAMOUS is based on that experience. The documentary’s director is A.J. Eaton, who lets Crowe draw out Crosby, while offering us a wealth of archival footage and background material on a remarkable time, a remarkable career and a complicated man.

Like him or not, there is no denying David Crosby has had a storied career. Blessed with a beautiful singing voice and a gift for songwriting, Crosby was a member of the Byrds, then a founding member of Crosby, Stills, and Nash, who shot to fame after Woodstock. Crosby knew immediately that his voice was the perfect match for Graham Nash’s, and the two created thrilling harmonies on hit after hit, including “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” “Our House,” “Wooden Ships” and “Guinevere.” The addition of singer/songwriter Neil Young created the super group Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. The groups’ songs gave the ’60s and early ’70s much of its signature soundtrack, including the Kent State political lament “Ohio.”

You don’t have to remember the ’60s to enjoy this marvelous documentary. DAVID CROSBY: REMEMBER MY NAME takes us on a musical trip through some of the most important cultural moments of the Sixties, with concert footage featuring many of the songs, and putting the songs and the bands in perspective of the era and of Crosby’s life. It is an enjoyable and enlightening journey.

To its credit, the film does not shy away from or gloss over the central fact that, as talented as he is, David Crosby has a reputation as, well, a jerk. Yet on camera in this film, Crosby is charming, engaging and a natural storyteller. The legendary musician talks about other rock and folk music greats of the era, praising Jerry Garcia and Bob Dylan, and revealing his personal dislike of The Doors’ Jim Morrison. Crosby’s eloquence and frankness make the interviews with him one of the most engrossing parts of this film.

But another thing we quickly learn about the singer/songwriter – from other interviewees – is that he is famously prickly and has legendary temper. We don’t see the temper but we do see some of the prickly, difficult personality, although maybe less than would have been the case with another interviewer. With Cameron Crowe, whom he has known so long, Crosby is relaxed. He seems honest and open, although not always with good insight on himself. However, the film offers some insights, through background on Crosby’s family and upbringing, and also covers his current musical career, touring with younger musicians and making new music, while he faces declining health and his own mortality.

While the documentary has a lot of footage of Crosby, his wife, and interviews with some fellow musicians, others are notably absent. There is a little bit of interview footage with Roger McGuinn of the Byrds, with Neil Young and Graham Nash of CSNY but none with Stephen Stills, who only appears in concert footage and archival shots. Crosby mentions a daughter from whom he is estranged, and past lovers such as Joni Mitchell, but they also are absent from interviews.

There is, however, a great deal of fabulous concert footage and archival stills that recaps Crosby’s storied career, and the ups-and-downs of his personal life. Crosby ultimately comes across as someone who is often his own worse enemy, with a capacity to alienate those closest to him, yet lucky enough to have found happiness with his beloved, supportive wife Jan. Crosby is frank about his many affairs and his drug usage, including the heroin addiction that sent him to jail, an ordeal that helped him kick that habit. His band mates, including Graham Nash, were there for him when he got out of prison, along with his now-wife Jan. Jan is still with him but his former band mates no longer speak to him. There is a story there that interviewer Cameron Crowe skirts around, trying to tease it out, yet Crosby remains enigmatic.

This is an insightful, intriguing documentary about a talented but flawed man, as well as a essential and entertaining musical journey through a pivotal era. No matter what you think of David Crosby personally, this musical journey is a long strange trip well worth taking.

DAVID CROSBY: REMEMBER MY NAME opens Friday, Aug. 16, at Landmark’s Plaza Frontenac Cinema.

Are You Ready For THE HIT SQUAD?

Filmmaker/Musician Chris Blundell recently got in touch with me and asked if I would write something on here about his new film, THE HIT SQUAD. I always love to help out fellow indie filmmakers and it sounded pretty cool so I said yes. I headed over to www.the-hit-squad.com for more info and while there is not much content on there yet, there is enough to ensure that this is definitely a film to watch out for.

THE HIT SQUAD is the world’s first pixel animated film. What’s pixel animation? Remember your old 8-bit video games from the 80s? The ones that look like the picture above. Well that’s pixel animation. It is still used for some games and short videos today; however, this will be the first ever feature film made in this style. This may seem like a gimmick, and it probably is to some extent, but this style actually seems to suit the story very well.

The film follows singer Roddy Stones and his washed up 80s rock band, The Hit Squad, as they try to make a comeback in order to save their studio. According to the press kit, “the band embarks on a journey of sex, skullduggery, and synthesized music.” 80s synth music paired with the pixel animation will give this film a totally retro feel that is sure to be an interesting experience. And that experience will only elevate with the 3D viewing option. Yes, it will be in 3D. Just because it is pixilated doesn’t mean it is low quality. The film will be animated in Full HD and will be available in old school (ie. red & blue glasses) Analyph 3D, as well as a non-3D version.

The film comes out in October but it is already available for pre-order via the official website. By ordering now, you will be helping out Chris and everyone else involved because the film is still in production. It costs £14.99 ($23.08) for the DVD and £6.99 ($10.76) for the download. For just £40 ($61.59) you get the DVD plus you will be animated in the film. If I wasn’t over my head in raising money for my next film, I would definitely take advantage of this really cool offer.

If you’re ready for some synthesized 80s pixel action, check out www.the-hit-squad.com!

TOOTH FAIRY Trailer is Painful

tooth fairy header

Nothing like a hurts donut just before the weekend starts.   To that end, excuse me if I’m being a little lazy, but I’m going to reiterate the same discussion I ran with the poster for this Rock-starring, kiddy-friendly snoozefest.   This comes just as the trailer for ‘The Tooth Fairy’ is hitting the Inter-waves via Yahoo! Movies.

Is it the skates?  Is it the wings?  Is it the horrid tagline?  What about this new poster trailer for ‘The Tooth Fairy’ is it that just makes us cringe so much?  If you picked any of those three, you’d be wrong?  It’s the fact that we remember a day about six years ago when ‘The Rundown’ came out, and a scene early in the film had a passing of the baton of sorts between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.  Knowing the ‘Jingle All the Way’ and ‘Junior’ path Schwarzenegger took later in his career, we were worried then, and it seems our worries have come to fruition.

See that cute, little PG tag in the bottom left-hand corner of the poster at the start of the clip?  That means the baton has truly been passed.  Johnson could have been a second coming for a lot of action fans, but he has jump-started the rear trajectory on a career that could have made him an icon.  It’s been happening for a long time, and some of always had hope that Johnson would snap back, take back the action reigns, and rule alongside guys like Jet Li and Jason Statham.  Alas, that is not to be, and we are sure to see more rather than less of those goofy scowls and muscled up & folded arms.

Now feast your optics on this bit of cardboard:

I…it…when he jumps off…with the wings…

Words fail me.

‘The Tooth Fairy’ comes out on January 22nd.

The Rock Sinks to ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’

UPDATE

This rumor has already been shot down. Â  Sci-fi Wire caught up with McG and asked him about the news that Rock had been cast as Nemo, and the director emphatically denied it.

McG: I’ve never spoken to Dwayne Johnson about this. I like him. He’s great. He’s a wonderful human being and an excellent screen presence, but we have not spoken about 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Not a word.

So, there. Â  We bring you false news and rumors. Â  Back to your Monday.

If you’re going to have a director like McG helm a spinoff/prequel/sequel/other entry into an already established franchise, it’s a pretty good idea to get someone with some edge to them to carry the star power. Â  Putting Christian Bale in the John Connor role of ‘Terminator Salvation’ has done wonders to what could be a slow build to an epic trainwreck.

Disney, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to care about how their films are viewed. Â  Case in point. Â  The Rock has evidently been cast in McG’s reworking of ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ subtitled ‘Captain Nemo.’ Â  This news comes only a few months after McG stated he wanted Will Smith for the part of a young Nemo.

Formerly titles ‘Nemo,’ the new film would serve as a prequel, showing us the adventures of the young Captian Nemo and his acquiring of the Nautilus.

What do you think? Â  Is Dwayne “Rock” Johnson the right choice for Nemo? Â  Is it a better choice than Will Smith? Â  Does this news make you somewhat nervous to see what McG put together for his ‘Terminator’ movie? Â  Let us know by commenting below!

‘Race to Witch Mountain’ Teaser Trailer Online

Are you ready for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to put away these Disney movies and get back to kicking butt and chewing bubblegum? Â  Well, then you’re gonna have to wait a little longer.

Yahoo! got the teaser trailer for ‘Race to Witch Mountain’ up on their site. Â  You can check it out below.

It looks like it’s gonna be some harmless, Disney-born fun with a little excitement thrown in the mix. Â  It looks stylish enough, that’s for sure. Â  I have a feeling it’s going to be running in theaters this coming weekend in front of ‘Bolt’.

Let us know what you think by commenting below!

The Rock Goes Full Disney

Dwayne Johnson, formerly known as The Rock, has signed on to star in Disney’s newest attempt to bank on a film based on something from their theme park. The section of Walt Disney World known as Tomorrowland will be the inspiration behind a new sci-fi movie, according to Variety.

Jon Lucas and Scott Moore (‘Rebound’) are attached to write the screenplay.   The film is considered a vehicle for Johnson, who is also appearing in a new Disney remake of ‘Race to Witch Mountain.’

Disney did deny that the film is dedicated to Tomorrowland or that the film will be called ‘Tomorrowland’.   They claim that it will be a wholly original “epic-sized action adventure set in space.”

It looks like Johnson is no longer concerned with becoming the “next Arnold Schwarzenegger” unless he’s skipped past the ‘True Lies’ era straight to the ‘Jingle All the Way’ era.
