Sony Catches a ‘Machete’

machete

Sony sure knows not to mess with the wrong Mexican.  It was announced by The Hollywood Reporter that Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired most of the international rights to Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Grindhouse’ expansion film, ‘Machete.’

The company most recently had a hit with Neill Blomkamp’s ‘District 9,’ for which the company handled distribution in Italy, Russia and South Korea.  The company also handled most of the international distribution for Duncan Jones’ sci-fier, ‘Moon.’

While ‘Machete’ is still shooting in Austin, don’t be surprised if a release date gets set sometime soon.

Insane ‘Machete’ Cast List Confirmed

machete

It was an unconfirmed rumor a few weeks back, but it appears a lot of the rumblings behind some of the casting on ‘Machete’ has been confirmed.   In an article on Variety today by Mike Fleming about Overnight Productions, it was revealed that not only would Robert De Niro be joining Danny Trejo in the film, but Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson and Jeff Fahey would also be playing supporting roles.

This answers a few questions people were asking when De Niro’s name came up previously.   Primarily, if Fahey is returning, De Niro will not be playing Senator McLaughlin, unless, of course, Fahey has stepped aside to fill another role.   A few of these names like Lohan and Rodriguez were also pretty much confirmed already.   However, Seagal and Johnson have totally come out of nowhere.   I cannot wait to see what role Robert Rodriguez has Seagal filling.   This could be his chance at finally playing the villain.

One name peculiar by his absence is Jonah Hill, who was also rumored to be playing a character in the film.

‘Machete’ is currently in production and is set for release sometime in 2010.   With names like De Niro and Alba on board, the chances of it going straight to DVD have thinned, so look for this one in your theaters.

Throwback Thursday: ‘The King of Comedy’

kingofcomedythrowback

“Why not me? Why not? A guy can get anything he wants as long as he pays the price. What’s wrong with that? Stranger things have happened.”
– Rupert Pupkin (Robert De Niro) in ‘The King of Comedy’

Six years after Martin Scorsese gave us Robert De Niro as a mentally unstable Viet Nam vet turned taxi driver, he gave us another De Niro-played, mentally unstable character. This time, however, it was played for laughs. However, playing it for laughs or not, with ‘The King of Comedy,’ Scorsese put together a film that told a story as dramatically connected to the world as anything he had done before or since. It is a film about celebrity and the lengths to which people will go just for a glimpse, a taste of it. Continue reading Throwback Thursday: ‘The King of Comedy’

Norton and De Niro Reteaming for ‘Stone’

score

‘The Score’ was one of those films that had everything going for it, but completely failed to deliver when all was said and done.   Nonetheless, Robert De Niro and Edward Norton are reteaming, as they are both set to star in ‘Stone.’

Directed by John Curran (‘The Painted Veil’), ‘Stone’ is an adaptation of the stage play written by Angust MacLachlan.   MacLachlan’s last endeavor into screenwriting came with ‘Junebug,’ which resulted in an Academy Award nomination for supporting actress, Amy Adams.

‘Stone’ begins filming in Pittsburgh next month.

Paul Weitz in Talks to Direct ‘Little Fockers’

meet-fockers

So, Jay Roach isn’t directing ‘Little Fockers.’   Yeah, we knew that last month.   Unfortunately, we then said Peter Segal would be stepping into the director’s position.   Now, that has been proven inaccurate, as well.

Word came down today that Paul Weitz (‘About a Boy’ and ‘In Good Company’) is in talks to direct the third installment of the adventures of Gaylord Focker.   Note, he is in talks for the job.   Nothing is set in stone at this point.

We will let you know as soon as anything official comes out.   Weitz just recently wrapped production on the horror fantasy flick, ‘Cirque du Freak.’
