Watch The Heart Warming Trailer For THE GOOD LIE Starring Reese Witherspoon

tumblr_n7g1vfI4mU1teelmro1_1280

Reese Witherspoon stars in the feel good film on the fall – THE GOOD LIE. Produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, the movie opens in theaters on October 3rd.

They were known simply as “The Lost Boys.”

Orphaned by the brutal Civil war in Sudan that began in 1983, these young victims traveled as many as a thousand miles on foot in search of safety. Fifteen years later, a humanitarian effort would bring 3600 lost boys and girls to America.

In THE GOOD LIE, Philippe Falardeau, (writer and director of the Oscar- nominated Foreign Language film “Monsieur Lazhar”) brings the story of their survival and triumph to life. Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon (“Walk the Line”) stars alongside Sudanese actors Arnold Oceng, Ger Duany, Emmanuel Jal, and newcomer Nyakuoth Weil, many of whom were also children of war.

Mamere and Theo are sons of the Chief in their village in Southern Sudan. When an attack by the Northern militia destroys their home and kills their parents, eldest son Theo is forced to assume the role of Chief and lead a group of young survivors, including his sister Abital, away from harm. But the hostile, treacherous terrain has other dangers in store for them.

As the tattered group makes the difficult trek to Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, they meet other fleeing children, forging a bond with Jeremiah, who, at 13, is already a man of faith, and Paul, whose skills become essential to their survival.

Thirteen years later, the now young adults are given the opportunity to leave the camp and resettle in America. Upon arriving in Kansas, they are met by Carrie Davis (Witherspoon), an employment agency counselor who has been enlisted to help find them jobs—no easy task, when things like straws, light switches and telephones are brand new to them.

Although Carrie has successfully kept herself from any emotional entanglements, these refugees, who desperately require help navigating the 20th century and rebuilding their shattered lives, need just that. So Carrie embarks on her own unchartered territory, enlisting the help of her boss, Jack (Corey Stoll).

Together, against the backdrop of their shared losses, the Lost Boys and these unlikely strangers find humor in the clash of cultures, and heartbreak as well as hope in the challenges of life in America.

Along with Witherspoon, the film stars Corey Stoll (TV’s “House of Cards”); real-life Sudanese refugees Arnold Oceng (BBC’s “Grange Hill”) and newcomer Nyakuoth Wiel; Ger Duany (“I Heart Huckabees”) and rapper Emmanuel Jal, who were both former child soldiers and lost boys; and Femi Oguns (BBC’s “The Casualty”). Rounding out the cast are Sarah Baker as volunteer Pamela Lowi; Mike Pniewski as Mamere’s boss; and children of real-life Sudanese refugees Peterdeng Mongok, Okwar Jale, Thon Kueth, Beng Ajuet and Kejo Jale as the younger lost boys.

Falardeau directs from a screenplay by Margaret Nagle (HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire”). The producers are Academy Award winners Ron Howard and Brian Grazer (“A Beautiful Mind”), Karen Kehela Sherwood (“Frost Nixon”), Molly Mickler Smith (“The Blind Side”), Thad Luckinbill, and Trent Luckinbill. Oscar nominees Andrew A. Kosove and Broderick Johnson (“The Blind Side”), Kim Roth, Ellen H. Schwartz, Deepak Navar, and Bobby and Deb Newmyer are the executive producers.

Falardeau reunites with his “Monsieur Lazhar” director of photography Ronald Plante and composer Martin Léon. His behind-the-scenes team also includes production designer Aaron Osbourne (“The Losers”), editor Richard Comeau (“War Witch”), and costume designer Suttirat Anne Larlarb (“Slumdog Millionaire”), with casting by Mindy Marin.

The film has been rated PG-13 by the MPAA for thematic elements, some violence, brief strong language and drug use.

First Photo Of Reese Witherspoon in Jean-Marc Vallée’s WILD

WILD

Reese Witherspoon has tweeted out this first look at her new film WILD.

With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon) has lost all hope. After years of reckless, destructive behavior, she makes a rash decision. With absolutely no experience, driven only by sheer determination, Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone. WILD powerfully captures the terrors and  pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.

On October 11 Fox Searchlight Pictures announced that director Jean-Marc Vallée had started principal photography in Oregon on WILD.

The film stars Oscar winner Witherspoon (WALK THE LINE, MUD) and also features Thomas Sadoski (HBO’s “The Newsroom”), Michiel Huisman (WORLD WAR Z, HBO’s “Treme”),  W. Earl Brown (THE LONE RANGER, THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY), Gaby Hoffman  (SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, VERONICA MARS), and Kevin Rankin (DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE  APES, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB).

The screenplay is adapted by Oscar nominated writer Nick Hornby (AN EDUCATION, High Fidelity) from author Cheryl Strayed’s NY Times #1 best-seller Wild, the book that re-launched Oprah’s Book Club 2.0.

Pacific Standard’s Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea (WARM BODIES, ALL GOOD THINGS) are producing with River Road Entertainment’s Oscar nominated Bill Pohlad (THE TREE OF LIFE, 12 YEARS A SLAVE).

The film’s executive producers are Hornby, Bergen Swanson (THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT) and Nathan Ross (DALLAS BUYERS CLUB), Vallée’s producing partner.

Once again joining director Jean-Marc Vallée (DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, CAFÉ DE FLORE) are director of photography Yves Bélanger (LAURENCE ANYWAYS), production designer John Paino (KILL THE MESSENGER, MARGIN CALL), editor Martin Pensa (CAFÉ DE FLORE), and visual effects supervisor Marc Côté (IMMORTALS, CAFÉ DE FLORE), who all collaborated with Vallée on his acclaimed DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, starring Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner. The costume designer is Melissa Bruning (DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, PARKER).

The film is shooting on location in Oregon and California.

MUD Trailer Features Matthew McConaughey, Sam Shepard And Reese Witherspoon

Matthew McConaughey, Sam Shepard, Michael Shannon and Reese Witherspoon star in this trailer for director Jeff Nichols’ MUD, in theaters April 26th.

MUD is an adventure about two boys, Ellis and his friend Neckbone, who find a man named Mud hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. Mud describes fantastic scenarios – he killed a man in Texas and vengeful bounty hunters are coming to get him. He says he is planning to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper, who is waiting for him in town. Skeptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him. It isn’t long until Mud’s visions come true and their small town is besieged by a beautiful girl with a line of bounty hunters in tow.

MUD was an Official Selection (In Competition) at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and is playing at the Sundance Film Festival this week.

In their Cannes review, Variety wrote,

If “Take Shelter” embodied man’s crushing inability to cope with forces beyond his control, and “Shotgun Stories” examined a blood feud from the side of those in the wrong, then ascending writer-director Jeff Nichols blends the turbulent waters of the former with the dirty dealings of the latter to make “Mud.” Confidently expanding his inquiry into the essence of American masculinity, Nichols’ latest pressure-cooker pastoral conjures a wily figure of endangered Southern chivalry whose name is … you guessed it. Sturdy turns from Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon should support a wide release, curbed somewhat by pic’s unhurried pace and heavy regional temperament.

THIS MEANS WAR – The Review

So, Valentine’s Day was a few days ago. Doesn’t mean it’s too late for another romantic comedy. Now this one hedges its bets by trying to appeal to adrenaline lovin’ guys. No simple hearts and flowers stuff like THE VOW are going on here. Action director McG injects some Bond and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE style thrills into the genre with THIS MEANS WAR. But can he rescue the wounded rom-com after recently being roughed up by the likes of SJP, Heigl, and Kutcher?

WAR starts up right at the end of a dangerous Hong Kong adventure. CIA agents and best pals Franklin AKA FDR ( Chris Pine ) and Tuck ( Tom Hardy ) are there to break up some dirty deal instigated by Heinrich ( Til Schweiger ). After much mayhem the guys return to LA HQ where they’re called on the carpet by their boss Collins ( Angela Bassett ) and assigned desk duty. We then meet adorable product tester Lauren ( Reese Witherspoon ), who’s great at her job but unlucky in love. She keeps running into her ex and his new gal all the time! After much prodding by her best pal, harried married mom Trish ( Chelsea Handler ) Lauren goes on an internet dating site. Back with the spies, Tuck’s got the blues. He’s still not quite over his divorce and misses his little boy. One night he decides to go online. And what do you know? He finds Lauren’s profile! FDR ( no internet dating for this “player” ) volunteers to shadow their meeting. Oddly enough ( not really ) FDR bumps into Lauren after her drink with Tuck and they exchange sparks. Soon Lauren is dating both guys and they discover their mutual new flame. They agree to behave as gentlemen ( like that’ll work ). I mean with all those cool spy gizmos at their disposal? C’mon! In addition to all the one-upmanship, that nasty old Heinrich is heading to the states to get revenge on the two buds. Can FDR and Tuck stay BFFs and keep Lauren from finding out about their agreement and their line of work before that angry German catches up to them?

It’s strange for this to come out so closely on the heels of the brutal spy thriller SAFE HOUSE. In that film , the Agency’s full of ruthless backstabbers and cruel torturers. The CIA in McG’s film is a fun place with cool toys and co-workers that don’t mind helping you out with a new gal. The offices are plush and slick like Ari Gold’s offices in TV’s Entourage. Then again the LA shown here is a fantasy fun park where you can run into the ex and show him up with your new fella. McG shoots the town with a golden glow, but can’t seem to bring a lot of life to the plot until the obligatory fight scenes and car chase. He edits those so frantically that you can barely tell who’s doing what to whom ( do you really needt o cut every two seconds? ). The actors can only do so much with this predictable script. It’s tough to believe that Witherspoon’s Lauren would be such a disaster in the dating pool. The clueless character is a waste of her considerable acting talents. Lauren’s more of a prize than a person. For a rom-com she doesn’t have much chemistry with her leading men. Hardy’s Tuck is too quiet and sullen for this light fare. Pine seems to be still in Captain Kirk mode, but can still throw out a funny line or gesture. These are two fine actors, but they don’t really gel as pals. Pine’s a Roger Moore type of spy while Hardy’s in the Daniel Craig vein. Speaking of chemistry. Witherspoon has that in spades with Handler’s Trish, who seems to be living vicariously through Lauren. Handler’s deadpan delivery makes a terrific contrast to the flighty Lauren character. A movie about those two very different woman would be much more interesting than this sophomoric cloak and dagger, dating farce. Everyone ( including the locations and vehicles ) are very attractive, but very forgettable. And shame on the producers for invoking Mad Magazine’s classic Spy Vs. Spy in the advertising. Now those spy guys are really funny!

WATER FOR ELEPHANTS – The Review

If you are looking for a great movie to go see on date night, WATER FOR ELEPHANTS is your film!

Jacob (Robert Pattinson) had everything going for him, despite the Depression going on around him. He was about to graduate from a wonderful university with his degree in the veterinarian sciences, his parents already had an established veterinary business in town, and he had everything that he could have hoped for. That all came crashing down when his parents were suddenly killed in a car accident, and the bank took everything. With no home, no money, and one test short of his degree, Jacob walked the rails and hopped on a train in search of… anything. What Jacob didn’t know is that the train he hopped was for The Bellini Brothers Circus, and that there is an awful lot of sadness, hard-work, and, quite frankly, dark happenings going on when the big tops lights are off.

With no family to go home to, Jacob takes a job at the circus where he is quickly moving up the ladder, and making friends with August (Christoph Waltz), the ringmaster, owner, and tyrant of the circus and his wife Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), the star of the show. Jacob needs to watch himself though… because between Augusts irrational means to keep the circus afloat, and Jacob’s growing affections for Marlena, this friendship triangle is on the brink of disaster.

Let’s go ahead and get this one out of the way. I know that a lot of you are iffy on the fact that Robert Pattinson is in this film because of his role in the TWILIGHT saga. Well, you have nothing to fear because he is wonderful in his role of Jacob. There are no sparkly vampires here, but his performance still shines. I thought he really broke free from his vampire stereotype in REMEMBER ME, and I think that holds true in WATER FOR ELEPHANTS. Reese Witherspoon does a fantastic job of showing the deeper sides to her character of Marlena. There is a despair, a feeling of being stuck and wanting to run away from her life… but at the same time a fear of losing her place in the spotlight. Sure, her character loves August, but that love has been replaced with fear and isolation. Witherspoon really makes the audience connect with her character on multiple levels. While watching this, there were times that I was slightly disgusted by her flirty, cheating nature, and times where I understood why she felt so trapped. They let you question, or dislike her for just the right amount of time, to draw you into her character, before showing you just how much is really going on with her. They didn’t show her as just the victim from start to finish, and I can appreciate that. Christoph Waltz might just be the best villain of this generation in cinema. There is a slick charisma about him when he steps into a dark role and he takes viewers along for quite a ride. There is a power about him, and his presence when he steps into the role of pretty much any character on screen that demands respect. His role of August is nothing short of that.

The look of this film was absolutely breathtaking. Everything from the magical circus sets, the costumes, and the way they presented the circus performances. I do not like modern day circus’s because I feel like a lot of the original magic has been lost or forgotten, but with this film, I was blown away. They really took their time with the production design, and it shows. They also treated the animals very well during filming, which is important to this girl. The film took the safety of both the humans involved, and the animals very seriously. In fact, the American Humane Association awarded WATER FOR ELEPHANTS its highest rating, “Monitored: Outstanding – ‘No Animals Were Harmed’®.

If you are a fan of animals, this film can be rough to watch at times. Although the animals were not hurt, there are scenes that depict the horrible way that these fun-filled creatures were, and in some cases still are trained and treated. I had to really try not to cover my eyes at parts. Don’t worry though, these animals can take care of themselves (at least in this film!).

I cannot speak more highly about this film. Granted, I have not read the book so please, if you have I would love to know your impression of the film! It had humor, but not cheesy romantic comedy style humor, romance, adventure, and depth. This is not just your typical chick flick!

Overall Rating: 4.75 out of 5 stars
