THE OTHER LAMB – Review

Michiel Huisman as Shepherd in Malgorzata Szumowska’s THE OTHER LAMB. Courtesy of IFC Films. An IFC Films Release.

The surreal horror/drama THE OTHER LAMB centers on a teen-aged girl in a cult led by a man called Shepherd (Dutch actor Michiel Huisman of “Game of Thrones”), who has a striking resemblance to traditional depictions of Jesus. But there is little that is lamb-like in this charismatic autocratic leader of a flock of obedient wives as they live a communal pastoral existence hidden deep in the woods, until their lives are disrupted by an event that send them on a journey with a violent end.

The girl, Selah (Raffey Cassidy), is one of the daughters of the Shepherd, although it is unclear whether they are all his actual offspring. Indeed, Shepherd barely looks old enough to have fathered a teen, much less so many. The “wives” are clad in red or purple and the “daughters” are dressed in blue, but some of the wives look little older than the daughters. And then you notice something odd – all the children are girls, there are no little boys. Actually there are few young children at all, with most of the girls adolescents or pre-adolescent, which seems even more unsettling.

THE OTHER LAMB brings to mind the Charles Manson cult, “The Handmaiden’s Tale,” and MIDSOMMAR among others. The film is beautifully shot, an atmospheric tale that opens with dream-like scene in which Selah, clad in long white robes, is floating in water, an image that evokes Hamlet’s Ophelia. That is a lot of unsettling allusions to pack in, but Polish director Malgorzata Szumowska, making her English-language film debut, is just getting started, in this surreal tale of abuse, misogyny and patriarchy.

Selah has known no other life than the cult, and seems content sharing quarters with her sisters and filling her day doing chores for their simple, pastoral life. The cult occupies in several buildings deep in the woods, with the daughters living in one, the wives in another, and Shepherd in his own. The whole compound covered by an awning of strings. At dinner, the wives and daughters praise and thank Shepherd, who concludes the meal by selecting a wife for the night, asking her if she will receive his grace. On Sunday, the wives and daughters dress in white and listen adoringly while Shepherd gives his sermon in a “church” made of a string box enclosing a clearing among the trees. The sermon is followed by a bloody sacrifice of a lamb.

From the beginning, there is something creepy about Shepherd whenever he speaks to Selah, an unsettling whiff of incestuous interest that is hard to shake. Paired with the film’s frequent nightmarish fantasy sequences, the feeling of unease suffused the drama.

However, THE OTHER LAMB is more a surreal and visually stunning study of the topics it raised than either a plot driven mystery or even a deep exploration of the themes it touches on. Still, it is a haunting film that raises questions about how women are treated in society. It also offers a series of haunting, horrifying images, and tense atmospheric scenes between the gifted cast, although what ultimately happens is not entirely a surprise. The mysterious dream-like images that open the film are followed by a series of other surreal, more nightmarish sequences sprinkled throughout, images just as mysterious as the opening one (is this a baptism or drowning?) but far more disturbing – a skinned lamb, the rotting remains of a bird, and other haunting images.

In addition to its striking photography, fine acting performances are a major strength of this symbolic horror/drama. Time and again, the camera focuses on Raffey Cassidy’s expressive face, shifting from innocent wonder to confusion to fear and rage, as she grapples with her nightmares and her shifting ideas about her faith and her life. Selah’s close relationship with her half-sister Tamar (Ailbhe Cowley) is shaken by Selah’s evolving doubts, and all are shaken by the horrific events that transpire. Denise Gough plays Sarah, one of the older wives who has fallen out of favor with Shepherd and is exiled to a hidden shack. The bitter, sarcastic Sarah has been with the cult from the start, and offers Selah her only insights on the outside world and on her dead mother. Michiel Huisman is brilliant disturbing as Shepherd, veering from posing as a benevolent, protective father figure who dispenses wisdom to something much darker, as his mask slips to reveal the selfish egotist beneath.

THE OTHER LAMB is unsettling to watch, and while it does not explore in depth the topics it raises, its haunting meditation on them and its haunting visuals are enough to keep it in your mind long after the film ends. THE OTHER LAMB debuted April 3 as digital and cable video-on-demand on streaming platforms Amazon Digital, Vudu, Spectrum, Apple TV, Xbox, GooglePlay and others.

VOX LUX – Review

Review by Stephen Tronicek

Brady Corbet’s Vox Lux feels like something of an artistic confession. The film, primarily about the relation of a mentally unhealthy person (in this case an artist) to a culture that perpetuates that illness, illustrates a deep emotional understanding of its material. Celeste (Raffey Cassidy and Natalie Portman) is a young woman who is shot in a school shooting by one of her classmates (Logan Riley Bruner). Instead of this being constructively dealt with, this event soon makes a celebrity out of her, launching a career that we, in the second half of the movie, will see a day in the life of.

That’s a lot to cover in the 110 minutes, but Corbet is up to it. After starring in films directed by Michael Haneke (Funny Games) and Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene) Corbet exploded onto the screen with a fascinating and scary piece of work, The Childhood of a Leader, a period piece dealing with similar issues of societal traumas and improper care. If anything, that film is a brutally efficient parable, one that tackles its epic themes with a startling confidence. In order to pull such a work off, one must have to be willing to exhaust every tool in one’s filmmaking arsenal and Childhood did that with ease.

The same goes for Corbet’s sophomore effort. Vox Lux goes through a number of themes, tones, and even genres in its frantic, animalistic quest to find some meaning (and even humor) in the numbing horrors of trauma itself and the brutal highs and lows of its aftermath. This is the reason why it feels so much like a confession. Paired with Childhood, Vox Lux plays like Brady Corbet staring you right in the face, giving you the finger and asking you, “Why are you letting me do this to myself?”

What makes Vox Lux interesting though is that it isn’t afraid to be critical of itself. Celeste (more so Portman’s garish troll) isn’t really a good person, just a flawed one making decisions based more on making an impression than actually having anything to say. And at times that is what Vox Lux feels like: a film that uses explicit material to make an impression…and yet that impression might just be part of the sick joke. In one of the most hypnotic scenes of the year, Celeste (Raffey Cassidy) explains to a young lover (Michael Richárdson) that her attacker listened to music that he made. They have a discussion about whether or not it was the music that made him do what he did or himself. The presentation of this discussion draws us to the main theme of the movie: That at the bottom of all of this is not the art itself, but how a sick wider culture allows that art to influence the many of us who are so scared. The joke is that the art is often too distracting, too influential to that sickness, to that fear, to actually help those in need. Brady Corbet might not hate pop music, but he knows that half of the equation is “pop.”

This manifested in my reaction to the film itself. After seeing it for the first time at the St. Louis International Film Festival, I walked away humming the main song at the center of the film, “Wrapped Up,” written and performed by Sia (who has produced some brilliant “pop anthems” for this work). It was only later that my brother pointed out to me that the lyrics to the song itself presented a twisted co-dependent view of the world. I was so wrapped up (pun intended) in the song itself that I forgot to listen to what it was telling me.

On that note, the portrayal of mental illness feels especially potent and real here.  Celeste (and therefore the film) bounces from a weeping, dazed, depressive mood to emotional highs of a startling quality. The final high, a dazzling concert that bookends the film, is immensely satisfying. So much so that you almost forget you’d spent the last 90 minutes suffering.

The actors holding up this crazy vision are almost all pitch perfect. Natalie Portman and Jude Law (who also executive produced this madness) both turn in performances that would be career makers if they weren’t already so prolific, Corbet collaborator Staci Martin finally gets to be in a good movie this year, and Raffey Cassidy (coming off of her perfect performance in Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer) is shaping up to be a movie star. Much like with the best film of last year, Cassidy is saddled with incredibly difficult material but she handles it with ease, creating a realistic and terrifying portrait of a young artist.

One would be amiss to not mention the technical work as well. Not only are the songs produced perfectly for this film, the concert at the end is choreographed incredibly well. It’s the moment that we’ve been waiting for so it really has to be. Props also must be paid to the technical team of cinematographers, gaffers and camera operators who made that concert, as well as the many insane long takes that populate the film. It is a gorgeous looking movie that could only spring from a technical team as motivated as the creative one.

Vox Lux is something of a masterpiece, a film that is determined to shock you, excite you, drag you across the concrete and leave you conscious of the many factors that built Celeste. Of the factors that built us, our modern culture, and, most of all, our reactionaries. It’s a desperate cry into the void, one that you will hopefully hear.

Walt Disney Studios Offers Park Guests Early Sneak Peek of TOMORROWLAND

Disney's TOMORROWLAND Tomorrowland Ph: Film Frame ©Disney 2015

Walt Disney Studios announced today an unprecedented collaboration between the Studio, Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort to offer park guests a 12-minute sneak peek of Disney’s upcoming thrilling, mystery-adventure film, TOMORROWLAND, opening in U.S. theaters on May 22.

Guests will also enjoy an impressive exhibit that features the making of the movie with props, concept artwork and photos from the filming of the movie plus exclusive images from the Disney Archives. The sneak peek and exhibit will open April 17 in Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park and on April 18 in Future World at Epcot and will be available to the public for a limited time.

The must-see event marks the first time that a sneak peek has been offered at Epcot in Walt Disney World and the first time Walt Disney Studios has teamed up with both parks to showcase an upcoming Disney film with footage and an in-depth look at the making of the film.

Sure to spark the imagination and curiosity of all, the special exhibit details the process of bringing director Brad Bird’s vision to life and will show how filmmakers created the world of Tomorrowland, along with archival images of iconic Disneyland attractions featured in the movie.

In the movie, the premise that the futuristic city of Tomorrowland could actually exist pays homage to Walt Disney’s vision for both Tomorrowland at Disneyland Resort and Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort where ever-evolving technologies are showcased along with ideas to make the world a better place for all.

Commenting on the exclusive TOMORROWLAND sneak peek event, Brad Bird, the film’s two-time Oscar winning director, says, “We are excited that park guests will be the first to get an extended look at ‘Tomorrowland’ in the part of Disneyland that inspired the film. Tomorrowland is the one section of the park that Walt Disney himself designed to be tied inexorably to constant change. After all, the future is always in motion, continually shifting as humankind’s choices of the present remake the world ahead of us. ‘Tomorrowland’ is a state of mind. My hope is that the exhibit will convey some of the magic that went into bringing this land… and this movie, to life.”

TOMORROWLAND, a riveting mystery adventure starring Academy Award winner George Clooney, tells the story of former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, who are bound by a shared destiny and embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world—and them—forever.
