Nabucco will screen in St. Louis this Sunday, May 18th at 12 noon at Landmark’s Tivoli Theater
Plácido Domingo, one of the most celebrated talents of our time, makes a major role debut in an unmissable new production of Nabucco, the Italian-language opera in four acts composed in 1841 by Giuseppe Verdi. Nabucco follows the plight of the Jews as they are assaulted, conquered, and subsequently exiled from their homeland by the Babylonian King Nabucco (in English, Nebuchadnezzar). The historical events are used as background for a romantic and political plot. The best-known number from the opera is the “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves,” Va, pensiero, sull’ali dorate / “Fly, thought, on golden wings,” a chorus which is regularly given an encore in many opera houses when performed today.
In this production, recorded earlier this year, Domingo takes another thrilling step into baritone repertory as he sings the title role of Nabucco for the first time. He is joined by an exciting young cast including Ukranian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska (Lady Macbeth in Macbeth for The Royal Opera, 2011) as the power-hungry priestess Abigaille. The plot is based on the biblical story of King Nebuchadnezzar (Nabucco), and focuses on his imprisonment of the Hebrews, his struggle against his unscrupulous daughter, Abigaille, his divine punishment and final salvation. Verdi’s rich score offers melody, power and raw drama on a scale that does full justice to the opera’s epic themes of nationhood, faith, love and redemption and calls upon the full might of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and Royal Opera Chorus. Acclaimed theatre and opera director Daniele Abbado makes his Royal Opera debut directing this co-production with La Scala, Milan. This is a rare chance to see a genre-defining masterwork, containing some of the greatest choral music ever written, along with some wonderful arias and ensembles.

“Nabucco suits Domingo’s still-tenorial baritone better than some of the other Verdi baritone roles he has attempted. The ringing, dark tone emphasises the flawed but heroic character of the Babylonian king. It means Domingo brings something of Otello to the role, and even, in his despair, a glimpse of the Lear that Verdi longed to write but never did. If only he had known Domingo.”
