A Sequel To PIRANHA 3-D In The Works

EW has some news about a sequel to the late summer horrorfest, PIRANHA 3D.

Strong reviews and a $10 million opening was enough for Dimension Films to get working on a sequel of Piranha 3-D. The studio confirmed today that plans for another bloody gore fest are in the works with director Alexandre Aja and producer Mark Canton re-teaming with Dimension. “We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving Piranha 3-D, but cheering for it,” says Canton. “And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”

What would said sequel look like? No plotline has yet been decided, but Aja, when interviewed a couple weeks back, said the team has been throwing around a lot of different story lines. “We had many ideas, like the full moon party in Thailand — a huge event with like 20,000 young people from all around the world taking mushrooms and partying on the beach.” Ahh, a perfect environment for man-eating fish.

Unfortunately there was no press screening for Aja’s movie, but that didn’t keep WAMG writers from going to see it over the weekend. You can read the review of PIRANHA 3D from contributing editor Andy Triefenbach of Destroy The Brain here.

PIRANHA 3D: Funny ‘For Your Consideration’ Video

Piranha 3D is leading all of the Best Movie categories (hey, don’t laugh!) and this video solidifies why Piranha 3D is the front runner for an Oscar this year. (snickering) So without further adieu, here’s the video for Piranha 3D: For Your Consideration from Piranha 3D. Take it away…

The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films partnered with FunnyOrDie.com, a wildly popular comedy website founded by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, in making the star-studded video advertisement promoting Piranha 3D – which was directed by French filmmaker Alex Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors) – for Best Picture.

You can find those wacky Funny or Die kids on Facebook and Twitter. Remember, PIRANHA 3D opens on Friday, August 20th.

PIRANHA 3D Takes a Bite Out of a New Release Date

Who could wait for this spectacle after the trailer debuted in April. And now PIRANHA 3D will be in theaters a week earlier. Giddy anyone? C’mon… raise your hands.

In case you missed it:

Oh Christopher Lloyd, you’ve been gone far too long from the silver screen, especially when you’re popping out lines like, “piranha hunting in packs.” Don’t even get me started on the whole deal of Richard Dreyfuss/JAWS/Matt Hooper showing up in the movie. (Insert big smile here.) From the looks of it, Ving Rhames assumes the Chief Brody part. Sign me up for this trip… pronto!

From director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) comes the new action thriller PIRANHA 3D. Every year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for Spring Break, a riot of sun and drunken fun. But this year, there’s something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers; a new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor-toothed residents. The films stars Jessica Szohr (Gossip Girl), Steven R. McQueen (The Vampire Diaries), Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O’Connell, Ving Rhames, Adam Scott, Richard Dreyfuss (JAWS), Christopher Lloyd, and Kelly Brook.

What a great way to end the summer. Where do I buy a ticket?

PIRANHA 3D will be in theaters on August 20, 2010. Follow the movie on Twitter and “Fan It” on Facebook.

PIRANHA 3D Trailer Nibbles at Your Funny Bone

You don’t even have to say it… I already know what you’re thinking. And, it’s something along the lines of “seriously?” Well, some of you more discerning fans of cheesy cinema may have already known about PIRANHA 3D, a project which has had some setbacks, but it looks like its resurfaced with a release date of August 27, 2010. So, before you go swimming and tubing out in the harmless waters this summer, you may want to check out this trailer first. All things being equal, I am thrilled to see Christopher Lloyd back on the big screen. I’m throwing caution aside and jumping into this dangerously shallow body of H2O horror head first! Hey, if you can’t enjoy a terribly cheesy horror flick, than you just don’t know how to live…

No More April Showers for PIRANHA 3-D

Maybe it’s just because I never really spent much time thinking about it or observing it until recently (writing for a movie news site will do that to you), but it seems more and more movies are having their release dates shuffled around like living room furniture.  Particularly is the case with the Weinstein Company, which, according to the LA Times, has decided April 16 just isn’t the right time of year for PIRANHA to infest local theaters.  Instead, the Alexandre Aja-directed, 3-D remake/sequel is going to gnaw its way into theaters in August, and that’s at the very earliest.

The reasoning behind this move?  In a nutshell, their scared of Lionsgate’s KICK-ASS, set to release on April 16, a film that will pretty much be aiming itself a the same, core audience.  A rep from Weinstein made note that the date change had no financial motivations.

The article in the LA Times goes on to speculate the potential future of the Weinstein Company, since much of their recent slate hasn’t brought in high numbers and their future slate becomes a jumbled mess when you look at all the release date changes involved.  Don’t count the Weinsteins out, though.  Just when you think their out, they reach out and pull themselves back up.

What do you think?  Were you looking forward to PIRANHA 3-D in April?  How do you think this change will effect its box office?  Is this one more note in the death knell for the Weinstein Company?  Let us know by shooting us a comment below.

Jerry O’Connell Joins ‘Piranha 3D’

jerry-oconnell

Jerry O’Connell is married to Rebecca Romijn-Stamos-O’Connell, so how can you feel a bit sorry for the guy? Â  You turn him into fish food, that’s how. Â  Entertainment Weekly is reporting O’Connell has signed for a role in Alexandre Aja’s adaptation of ‘Piranha 3D.’

O’Connell will be joining Elizabeth Shue, Ving Rhames, Adam Scott, Gossip Girl‘s Jessica Szohr, and Richard Dreyfuss in what is, evidently, an homage to his character from ‘Jaws.’

Shooting begins next week in Arizona with a release date set at March 19th, 2010.

‘Piranha 3D’ Picks Up a Couple of Thespians

richard-dreyfussving-rhames

Richard Dreyfuss and Ving Rhames are going to co-star in ‘Piranha 3D’.   Did you hear that?   Richrad Dreyfuss and Ving Rhames are going to be receiving checks for making appearances in ‘Piranha 3D.’   That’s right.   31 years after Dreyfuss walked away with an Oscar, and 11 years after Rhames won a Golden Globe award, the two are going to be battling killer piranha.   In 3D, no less.

Actually, Rhames might be battling piranha.   Dreyfuss might just show up for a few minutes in the beginning before he’s made into fish food.   Evidently, Dreyfuss will be making a cameo as an homage to his character in ‘Jaws,’ his character will be drinking Amity brand beer, and he will more than likely be the film’s first victim.

These reports come from Nuke the Fridge and were confirmed by Shock Till You Drop today.   Nuke the Fridge also mentions that, according to their source, the film is going to be like “Girls Gone Wild meets ‘Piranha'”.   Take that how you will.

The New York Post’s Page Six, on the other side, is reporting that Rhames is set to star in the film.   He will be joining Elizabeth Shue and Adam Scott, who have officially signed on to star in the film.

The film is set to begin shooting this month in Arizona with Alexandre Aja (‘The Hills Have Eyes’ and ‘Mirrors’) at the helm.

Elizabeth Shue to take on ‘Piranha 3D’

elizabeth-shue

After taking on the role that she was born to play (herself in ‘Hamlet 2’), it looks as if Elizabeth Shue will be taking on some killer fish.   She is in final negotiations to play the lead in Alex Aja’s remake of ‘Piranha,’ to be shot in glorious 3D.

Shue will be playing the part of Sheriff Julie Forester, the small-town authority of Lake Victoria and mother of three who has to start shooting flesh-eating fish once they start taking out local swimmers.

Shue has had previous, horror run-ins with Robet De Niro’s alter ego (‘Hide and Seek’), Kevin Bacon’s invisible nakedness (‘Hollow Man’), and a killer orangutan named ‘Link.’   Anybody remember ‘Link’?   That’s a forgotten, horror classic from the mid-80s.

Casting is being finalized on Aja’s ‘Piranha’ remake and shooting will begin soon.

Production on ‘Piranha 3D’ Delayed

According to shocktillyoudrop.com, production on Alex Aja’s 3D remake of ‘Piranha’ has been delayed.   Production was originally scheduled to begin this coming fall, but, due to the size of the film and the pre-production work involved, shooting has been pushed back until March/April of 2009.

“There just wasn’t enough time for pre-production to get it done in time,” says one insider. “It’s all about pre-production and trying to make it the best it can be.”

The film is slated for release on July 24th, 2009, but that is more than likely going to change as well.
