SKYSCRAPER (2018) – Review

Alright, it’s roughly the Summer midpoint, so let’s escape the “dog days” by heading into the cool confines of the local multiplex and catch a flick that practically screams, “big, loud, blockbuster”. This isn’t a new thing, for the past several decades (maybe since the late 70’s), the Summer action extravaganza has been the domain of several stars that seem to be playing much the same character in every flick (that’s the case with “movie personalities” since the dawn of cinema), who seem to have almost been biological engineered for such “heavy lifting”. For the seventies it was Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson, then with the 80’s they “flexed” their talents to greater heights with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Toward the end of the decade we got TV stars like Bruce Willis and martial arts masters such as Jean Claude Van-Damn and Steven Seagal. Now we’re getting action stars from the pro wrestling arena, and there’s no one hotter than the man formerly known as “The Rock”, Dwayne Johnson. He seems to be following Arnold’s playbook, by trying to broaden his appeal to audiences beyond the “shoot ’em up, blow ’em up” fans with comedies like CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE and even voicing an animated Disney character in MOANA. This while balancing his time between his roles in franchises like GI JOE, THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, and now JUMANJI. He’s back doing a stand alone flick (well, it could inspire some follow-ups). This time Johnson has a co-star nearly as big as him, namely the title character. Because this SKYSCRAPER has 240 stories, and (as they said on the TV classic “Naked City”) here’s one of them.

Before the building of said co-star, ten years or so, Will Sawyer (Johnson) leads an elite FBI hostage rescue team. One snowy night, a domestic dispute goes horribly wrong for the team. As his battered body is wheeled into the OR, Will awakens just in time to see the radiant face of an angel of mercy (Neve Campbell) right before she dons her surgical mask. Flash forward to today as Will is married to that angel, Sarah, and they’ve produced an adorable set of twins, Georgia (McKenna Roberts) and Henry (Noah Cottrell). But Will still carries the scars of that fateful night, having lost his left leg just below the knee (replaced by a state-of-the-art prosthetic). Will’s left the Bureau and started a modest security consultant firm. Thanks to a recommendation from another FBI teammate, Ben (Pablo Schreiber), Will has been hired as the head of security at the deluxe 240 story skyscraper known as “The Pearl”, the brainchild of billionaire Zhao Long Ji (Chin Han). Before the upper floor apartments are leased (Will’s family are the first tenants), Zhao wants Will to inspect the off-site operations center and gives him a mini-computer “pass key” that will give Will all access to the Pearl. But on a ferry ride to the center, Will is mugged. This sets off a chain of events that leads to a take over of those upper floors by armed forces who set off a series of fires and explosions. When Will learns that his family is still in their apartment (a special panda feeding trek was cut short when Henry becomes ill), he rushes back to rescue them. But how will he make it up there, past the police who somehow think that he may be part of that armed assault squad, and get up to the top now that the entrance doors are locked and the elevators are out of commission? Well, where there’s a Will…

…and what a Will! Johnson easily balances charm and impressive physicality in this (almost) every man role. Once more, he’s an adoring daddy who’s a perfect protector while showing that those muscles can still cuddle and coddle. But he’s a bit more vulnerable this time out thanks to his memory of the night that all his training was not enough. We can see that in Johnson’s eyes as he clicks his metal foot into position. But he can still think quickly and improvise weapons out of just about anything. Plus those dizzying heights prove to be a most formidable foe, one that those granite fists can’t overpower. Luckily he’s got a terrific partner in the radiant Ms. Campbell who makes a triumphant return to the big screen (she had been on the small screen in “House of Cards” and as sexy seatmate on a flight with Don Draper in “Mad Men”). The two have a delightfully funny, sexy banter, playfully teasing as their eyes almost glow with desire. But when things go sideways, Neve’s Sarah is no cowering victim. She swiftly switches gears to “mama grizzly” mode, shielding the kids as she dropkicks the various thugs and creeps. Get Ms. Campbell her own thriller soon! Han is a mystery as the ultra-cool tycoon who toys with Will until he finally must “come clean’ and reveal the “MacGuffin” that may topple his “Pearl”. As for the intruders, Roland Moller, last seen in ATOMIC BLONDE after his stellar lead role in LAND OF MINE, is sinister and ruthless, earning the malevolent moniker Kores Botha. There are two other stand-outs in the villain army. Noah Taylor has a most impressive, ever present sneer as Mr. Pierce and Hannah Quinlivan is a seductive leader of assassins, a pouncing tigress with blasting pistols instead of claws.

It’s surprising that this comes from writer/ director Rawson Marshall Thurber, a film maker known primarily for comedies like DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY and WE’RE THE MILLERS. Mind you, there are bits of humor to break up the tension (Will prepares to bust down a door, then finds that it’s unlocked), but the body count is very high, especially in the opening hostage stand-off. Yes, the film owes a lot to DIE HARD and THE TOWERING INFERNO, but it’s main inspiration may be the nail-biting tower-climbing sequence from MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, which itself is a modern riff on Harold Lloyd in SAFETY LAST (google him, better yet, track down a DVD). What’s really surprising is the final scene homage to the Orson Welles iconic noir THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI. And as you’ve no doubt seen in the ads, a certain “suspension of physics” is essential to your enjoyment (much like the lack of gravity in the FAST AND THE FURIOUS flicks). I had a tougher time accepting the huge “Greek chorus” of onlookers who seem to have nothing better to do that evening than watch the convenient massive monitors that give them a prime view of Will’s every move. Sure that’s nearly as nutty as the gaudy, loopy design of that building itself (who would approve such a structure, with an actual pearl-shaped globe rested near it’s top), complete with “Pandora-like” three story garden forest and waterfall. Sure it’s silly, and makes little sense, but as far as Summertime thrill-rides go, SKYSCRAPER delivers on its promise. Rock on, “Rock”, especially with a better script.

DEN OF THIEVES – Review

Right now at the multiplex playground a spirited game of “cops and robbers” is just beginning, probably right next to that game of “war on horseback” we previously discussed. Yes, this is a crime thriller, but as the game’s title indicates , both teams on opposite sides of the law pretty much gets equal screen time. The best of this film genre often puts the audience in a moral conflict. Like many crime flicks that involve an intricately plotted caper (or when the main crew has to do “one last job” as in the recent BABY DRIVER). we follow all the planning stages, so we can’t help ourselves from wanting to see if thing really goes off “without a hitch” (of course, unforseen complications always arise). But then these are criminals, so we are compelled to root for “the 5-0” to get wind off their activities and thwart the heist and getaway. Muddying the waters even more, how do we feel when those law enforcers become law breakers on the job, when the criminals seem to have a stronger moral code? That’s a lot to ponder after you enter this DEN OF THIEVES.

To paraphrase the opening title of a classic TV cop show, “This is the city, Los Angeles, California”, and according to the on-screen statistics, it’s the bank robbery capital of the world. We follow an armored money-transport truck as it pulls into the lot of an all-night eatery in the pre-dawn hours. As the drivers return with their coffee to go, masked men wearing protective armor and toting high-powered assault weapons emerge. Soon the bullets are flying, delaying the criminals’ plans for a quick “grab and go”. Suddenly squad cars arrive, but they’re no match for the crew’s firepower. But instead of unloading the truck, the team splits up, and the armored truck is driven to a garage run by Merrimen’s (Pablo Schreiber) gang. A few hours later, the sun rises on the crime scene, and officers of the sheriff’s department, led by the coarse, hung over Nick Flanagan (Gerard Butler) are combining through the carnage. Back at the station, they’re surprised to learn that the stolen truck was empty, having already made its delivery. Combining the files, they learn that Merrimen is eight months fresh out of prison. Nick’s got a hunch, but rather than confront him directly they decide to lean on a recent contact of Merrimen, a low-level car thief turned bartender named Donnie (O’Shea Jackson Jr.). Nick’s squad scoops up Donnie and takes him to a seedy motel room for an “off the record” interrogation. Donnie insists that he’s just a “wheelman” and is kept in the dark. A flashback reveals that the truck heist is part of Merrimen’s master plan of stealing from the “bank of banks’, the Federal Reserve. Can he and his crew pull off this “big score” or will the “loose cannon” Nick and his men “play dirty” and stop them?

Commanding most of the film’s running time as the commander of the cops, is Butler in full “bad boy” mode, cursing, boozing, brawling, chain-smoking, scowling, and growling. Full of macho swagger, he’s a more verbose variation of Dirty Harry, but Butler gives us the tragic, self-destructive guy beneath the down and dirty law man. His excesses may help him on the job, but they derail any attempts at a stable family life. Speaking of family, Schreiber is the stern father figure to a very hardened crew of criminal. With an icy stare, he is a force that is not to be questioned as he tasks his men with their duties. He’s quick to discipline, while still joining his men in recreation, even helping with a prank. The film provides another impressive role for a second generation actor, Jackson as the conflicted Donnie. His somewhat easy-going manner masks a great intelligence as he must react quickly in his tightrope walk between his crew and the police. After his breakthrough role as his pop in STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, Jackson is proving to be an engaging screen presence with his follow-up in the quirky INGRID GOES WEST, and this complex character. And don’t be deceived by the marketing. Though he’s featured prominently in the movie poster (much larger than the others), rapper Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is a supporting player as Merrimen’s right hand man. But he’s a compelling presence, especially in the movie’s most enjoyable scene as he is the most intimating papa any suitor could encounter.

Exploding right “out of the gate” with its armored truck shoot-out, director and co-writer Christian Gudegast shows his hand early. The film immediately sets itself up as a off-spring (maybe a son or grandson) of Michael Mann’s iconic HEAT, an aspiration it fails to achieve. This time we get little of the criminal kingpin’s personal life, but there’s way too much time devoted to the crumbling marriage of his nemesis. Just as the OCEAN’S ELEVEN-style caper seems to be kicking into high gear, the plot stops dead in its tracks to show Nick visiting one of his daughters at her school during recess, separated by a fence (so much for subtlety). This adds 15 or so minutes of fat to what should be a lean, mean movie machine. The execution of the big heist is far too complicated, with way too many moving parts (guard uniforms, sewers, and, no kidding, Chinese food delivery). It all culminates in a long protracted shoot-out during a traffic tie-up. Yes, gunfire and gridlock. The flicks then makes a sharp left right into a final (for real this time) sequence that evokes THE USUAL SUSPECTS. The script needed a couple more passes or maybe a much tighter, unforgiving edit. This might have transformed the end result into the taunt gritty cops and crime thriller, rather than the “not as clever as it thinks it is” start and stop detour that is the road to the DEN OF THIEVES.

Meet The Real-Life Heroes of 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI

13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI

“If you guys do not get here, we’re going to die.” – excerpt 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened In Benghazi

On the night of September 11, 2012, four Americans lost their lives in Benghazi – Ambassador Christopher Stevens (U.S. Ambassador to Libya), Sean Smith (Information Management Officer, U.S. Foreign Service), Tyrone “Rone” Woods (GRS Operator for Annex Security Team in Benghazi), Glen “Bub” Doherty (GRS Operator in Tripoli, Libya – part of the Quick Reaction Force sent from Tripoli to Benghazi after the compound was under attack).

13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI, is based on the book 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi, written by New York Times bestselling author Mitchell Zuckoff and co-authored by five members of the Annex Security Team, including Kris “Tanto” Paronto, John “Tig” Tiegen and Mark “Oz” Geist.

13 HOURS tells the true account of the events of when Islamic militants attacked the U.S. State Department Special Mission Compound (or simply – the American diplomatic compound, it was not the U.S. Embassy) and a CIA station called The Annex in Benghazi, Libya from the personal stories of five of the surviving American private security operators that were on the ground that day.

While it was not their job to protect the state department, when the Annex Security Team found out that the U.S. diplomatic compound was under attack, they knew they had to help the fellow Americans (including U.S. Ambassador Stevens) that were in jeopardy. These operators live by the code that Americans help other Americans overseas.

Audiences embraced the film adaptations of LONE SURVIVOR and AMERICAN SNIPER. Now comes 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI.

Michael Bay’s new movie tells the true account of the events.

Readers truly got a sense of the chronology of the events in their thoroughly detailed book and their account provided chilling details of what really took place that night.

Former Marines who were not active duty military at the time of the attack, both Tiegen and Geist were members of the Annex Security Team hired by the CIA. Recently I had the profound honor of sitting down one to one with these real life American heroes to discuss the film and what’s happened since.

WAMG:  For those who haven’t read the book, what does the title 13 Hours represent?

John “Tig” Tiegen: “13 Hours” means from when we got the call to when the last guy went wheels up from Benghazi. It was a 13 hour ordeal.

WAMG:  When were you first approached about the movie?

Mark “Oz” Geist: 3 Arts is our agent and they have a literary division who represented us for the book. I think we all had the idea that this could be adapted into a great movie, but the biggest thing for us was that we didn’t lose the story in the making of the movie.

It’s what compelled us to write the book and the politics of this has taken the subject matter and split it apart to the far right, to the far left, and what happened that night and the fact that four Americans lost their lives, at least to us the honor and respect that should be brought to them wasn’t because of the politics.

The only way for us to truly get that right was to initially write the book. We could’ve gone on FOX or CNN or whichever other news station and they would have taken soundbites and made it into whatever they story they wanted to tell and not ours. The book is like putting it in stone – it’s there forever.

JT: Plus the history. It’s been 30 years since we lost an U.S. ambassador in a conflict, so now it’s written down and 30 years from now our kids will know it.

Left to right: John Krasinski, James Badge Dale and Director Michael Bay on the set.

WAMG: I like how respectful Michael Bay is of the military. This is his third drama film based on real-life events, after PEARL HARBOR and PAIN & GAIN. What was your first thought when you were told Bay was directing the film? What sort of input did you have throughout the process?

MG: When it all first started developing, our biggest concern and what we expressed to Paramount and Michael Bay was, in no uncertain terms, if you do anything that brings disrespect to the four Americans, there will be issues.

At the same time they made it very clear in how they wanted to approach it and they wanted to do it the right way. We didn’t want anything of the story lost. Of course there will be certain things changed for the movie.

JT: Just to make it flow, but all the events in those 13 hours happened and are in the context of the movie. That’s what was important to us.

WAMG:  As we saw in the featurette Paramount released, you all were on the set.  How much of the movie have you seen?

MG: We’ve seen an extended piece of footage – about 20 minutes of it.

WAMG:  Recent war-themed adaptations such as LONE SURVIVOR and AMERICAN SNIPER have been unbelievably successful and hit that perfect emotional note with moviegoers. In your opinion, has Bay captured the essence of your book?

MG: I think he has. He shows the emotional side of the family’s stories and those relationships, along with the camaraderie, the action and the undying service to duty that LONE SURVIVOR, AMERICAN SNIPER and even BLACK HAWK DOWN did. He’s really brought that respectful approach to the whole thing.

Left to right: Director Michael Bay, Mark "Oz" Geist, Author Mitchell Zuckoff and John "Tig" Tiegen on the set.

Left to right: Director Michael Bay, Mark “Oz” Geist, Author Mitchell Zuckoff and John “Tig” Tiegen on the set.

WAMG:  What was it like being on the set in Malta and watching that night being played out?

JT: It was great to see how the whole thing was done. I can’t wait to see how it all comes together. I had the chance to meet with Dominic Fumusa who plays me in the movie. They all got to know us and our personalities – the actors really wanted to get all the details right. It’ll be really accurate.

13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI

“The situation is beyond serious, people need our help, and we’re the only ones available. We need to go.” – excerpt 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened In Benghazi

WAMG: Was there any time while on set and during filming that you had to walk away?

JT: There was definitely a flashback when we walked onto the set that was The Annex – it was really close to how it was.

MG: This isn’t the first time either of us have been in a firefight like this, maybe not to this extent, but to me being on set was all about making a movie, so I was watching from a technical aspect. Michael Bay really gets it right.

WAMG: From what we’ve seen in the trailers, this will be a very visual film, for which Michael Bay is known for.

MG: I’ve read some reports saying, “Oh, it’s a Michael Bay film and there will be a lot of explosions.” I was there and there were a lot of explosions going on.

13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI

WAMG: I’ve spoken at great length to U.S. Marines who have read the book and are still bothered, even hostile, over the whole incident and what happened during the Benghazi hearings. While your book doesn’t take a political stance on either side, what was your take on those hearings?

JT: I didn’t watch it, but I did call Rone’s mom that night and she was pretty upset and very disappointed with the whole thing (Tyrone “Rone” Woods, GRS Operator for Annex Security Team in Benghazi).

WAMG: What are your thoughts about when Paramount Pictures will release the film in theaters?

JT: It’s the same time when AMERICAN SNIPER was released and they had really great reviews. (pauses) And it’s also Rone’s birthday.

MG: They didn’t know that when they decided on a date. The studio didn’t know it was his birthday, because when we both heard it was going to be released on January 15th, we said to each other – what are the odds? It’s appropriate.

WAMG: Was there ever a public ceremony to honor all of you?

JT:  The State Department invited us and gave us awards, but the day before the ceremony we were uninvited. We went to the agency and did a private ceremony there. To me it’s a smack in the face because the cook and the maintenance guy got the same exact medal we did.

It was our jobs to provide security and we didn’t do it for awards or medals, but now I’d really rather have not received anything.

13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI

“We need to go. Right Now.” – excerpt 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened In Benghazi

WAMG: What do you want people seeing the movie and reading your book to take away from your courage and that tragic night?

MG: For me, I want people to know that there are private military security contractors working all over the world putting their lives on the line. Most of them are Veterans who have served their country for extended periods of time and have chosen another way of serving their country. The numbers that most people don’t realize is that there are between 3,500 and 5,000 contractors that have died since 2001 in 80 countries, and over 30,000 wounded.

I want people to know there are people who have chosen to serve their country and they are doing great things, and you never hear about it – this is a way to bring their story to light. Not only them, but the Ambassador who, even though he was appointed, came up through the ranks as a foreign service officer and served several different pots. He and Sean Smith had long histories of service to this country and they weren’t being honored after it was over. There was too much spin by the politicians.

JT: The first memorial ever done for the guys in Benghazi was done by a firefighter out of California. Why wasn’t our government doing it?

MG: He felt compelled. When he didn’t see anything being done, he made a plaque. He got the granite up by Whitefish, Montana and this plaque, which weighs about two or three tons, is now sitting up at that ranch. It has a bronze eagle mounted over it.

JT: It’s awesome.

MG: It took a civilian who had nothing to do with Benghazi to do that.

13Hours_1-Sht_Teaser_Flag

Three new posters take a sobering look at director Michael Bay’s new film, 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI.

13 HOURS tells the true account of the events of September 11, 2012 when Islamic militants attacked the U.S. State Department Special Mission Compound (or simply – the American diplomatic compound, it was not the U.S. Embassy) and a CIA station called The Annex in Benghazi, Libya from the personal stories of five of the surviving American private security operators that were on the ground that day. The film features the real life American heroes Mark ‘Oz’ Geist, Kris ‘Tanto’ Paronto, and John ‘Tig’ Tiegen.

While it was not their job to protect the state department, when the Annex Security Team found out that the U.S. diplomatic compound was under attack, they knew they had to help the fellow Americans (including the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens) that were in jeopardy. These operators live by the code that Americans help other Americans overseas.

The film stars John Krasinski, James Badge Dale, David Denman, Dominic Fumusa, Max Martini, Pablo Schreiber and Toby Stephens.

From Paramount Pictures, 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI will open in theaters on January 15, 2016.
